google glass and #noui
DESCRIPTION
Google Glass is a massive scale social experiment. The first heads up display that has the potential for mass adoption. Most of us are old enough to remember the “elitist” moniker of the mobile phone when it first went commercial, the yuppy accessory in the City, now used globally by billions. I will explore the Google Glass through its unique user experience, what challenges there are in moving from heads down to heads up and the ways it challenges our preconceptions about the way we create software services, how do we create value when there may be #NoUi?TRANSCRIPT

Google Glass is a massive scale social experiment,
the first wearable computer to have the potential for
mass adoption
It challenges everything,
the way we create, the way we interact with the world, our right to privacy, our social norms…even what we call it
fad? revolution?
from heads down to heads up
“…and as Glasses have highly promoted our seeing, so 'tis not improbable, but that there may be found many mechanical inventions to improve our other
senses of hearing, smelling, tasting, and touching.“

"To be honest, once we got into the surgery, I often forgot the device was there, it just seemed very intuitive and fit seamlessly."
Dr Kaeding streamed live knee ligament surgery to his students
Primary task Execute successful Surgery on a patient
Secondary Task Remote consultation on procedure via video and audio link
Secondary Task Educate students so they can conduct the same procedure
We can now consider these senses “always on”
Rather than a focal activity
“The computer runs continuously, and is 'always ready' to interact with the user.” - Mann

Principles of #NoUI
Principle 1: Eliminate interfaces to embrace natural processes
Principle 2: Leverage computers instead of catering to them.
Principle 3: Create a system that adapts for people.

High
User experiences a frictionless relationship with services The concepts of on, off, checking tasks and information are alien
It’s a focal activity, requiring planning, concentration to execute a task

What I have learned from using Glass so far…
#1 Its not just about the display
#2 most apps get turned off if they don’t resonate with a short term need.
#3 the screen is ordinarily off
Old information on the timeline is DEAD
#4 sound is always on – we haven’t touched even 1% of the capability of augmented hearing
#5 video and photos are killer apps
#6 Maps (could be) a killer App and hints at bright future for travellers
#7 its easy to be more social
#8 it’s an early beta product
• The screen out of the user field of view feels like its missing a trick, moveable display joint?
• No ability to change depth of field, field adjustment! • It gets bogged down in some processes • Battery life is not great, less than a day
Primary task Treat it as if it were a matter of life and death Do not interrupt carelessly
Secondary Task Add direct and clear value to the Primary Task
Seek the #MVUI Minimum viable User Interface
