James is a singer/songwriter from Llandudno. As well as performing solo he also performs in a local band, Audiosun. As if this wasn’t enough he also organises local music events including ‘147 live’ which runs every Month in the popular Club 147 in Llandudno. The night includes lots of different music acts from full piece bands to acoustic sets. Coming shortly is ‘Headstock’ at the Kings Head bar Llandudno. The event showcases lots of local bands, musicians and singers. The mini festival has 3 different dates in the summer with the first due to take place on August 1st.

James’ influences come from far and wide including American artists such as Ryan Adams,

Neil Young, Bob Dylan, and Counting Crows. He sums it up by saying, ‘The songs I write pretty much write themselves, I want something with a Country feel without being to Country!’

He recalls an important bit of advice when reading Neil Young’s Biography, ‘in his book Neil says you shouldn’t try too hard to write a song, feel it and don’t force it, try not to overcomplicate things, usually the first thing you come out with will be your best effort.’

His album, ‘Hotel’ has been very well received locally and features 11 original tracks.

When we asked our 400+ strong facebook group who they would like to see in our local music feature of the Conwy issue of Goodtimes there was one name in particular that kept cropping up – James Cassidy!

For more information on James you can check him out on www.myspace.com/jimcassidyIf you’re interested in buying a CD, you can email James at [email protected]

River And Sea Sense is a non-profit educational charitable organisation. It was set up by Debbie Turnbull due to the tragic drowning of her son at Capel Curig – North Wales. 2010 sees the launch of pilot schemes of Waterwise - Life Saving Clubs which will be set up in 10 Leisure Centres throughout North Wales – enabling 15 youngsters the opportunity to take the Rookie Lifeguard/Bronze Medallion course plus integrated into that field visits to Mountain Rescue Centres and in house presentations from other valuable Emergency Services. The courses will be from 16 to 20 weeks long and the young people will come away not only with excellent Water Safety skills but will have learned valuable life lessons in Team Building and caring for each other – it is intend to incorporate Personal Development using NLP and confidence building techniques, Debbie hopes to see 2011 with at least 600 + young people partaking in these ‘unique’ courses.

Says Debbie “ Moving the business into 2010 has seen many changes all of which are very positive. The launching of WATERWISE - Lifesaving Clubs in North Wales is the new initiative.”

Since the tragic loss of her Son, Debbie to date has spoken to over 44,000 young people in Schools and Youth Groups in North Wales about

the dangers of water. It is now recognised by members of Crucial Crew pf which Debbie herself is a member. Apart from her independant presentations, Debbie also feels proud and priveleged to be able to talk in Schools with this official group of Police, Fire, Childline, Probation and other agencies who promote safety for young people and help to save lives.

A strong emphasis on her personal story comes through in presantations to all ages, and it is felt that this should now be an important part of the day to day learning in our Schools. “The feedback from pupils and teachers alike has been incredible” - says Debbie – “Facebook comments never cease to amaze me.” How Can yoU HelP ? Like any other non-profit organisation – to be able to sustain this type of work – River And Sea Sense needs funding.

If you feel you can help in any way then please contact Debbie Turnbull on 01492 870600 or email [email protected] – For sponsorship please enquire about our PR packages designed to give you maximum publicity in exchange for your help.

This time of year we MUST remember to be safe near water.

RemembeR:-n Tell your parents where you are going n Ensure your mobile phone is

charged and has money on itn I.C.E. = In Case of Emergency - Put this in your mobile phone and the name of a parent or guardian and their telephone number - This is a massive help to the Emergency Services if you have an accident or are in trouble.n Be careful by river banks they can be slippery when wet and it is so easy to fall in and be swept away by the current.n In lakes water can change temperature DRASTICALLY - VERY QUICKLY - COLD WATER KILLS !n Be aware of strong currents that may not be seen on the water surface. BE SAFE - BE SENSIBLE - AND HAVE FUN THIS SUMMER

Join Debbie for a FUN/Fundraising Event for River And Sea Sense at the Mulberry Pub at Conwy Marina. June 17th 2010 – 7.30pm - 11.30pmTICKETS - ONLY £5.00! Performance is even more acutely of the essence in the new Audi R8 GT, a distillation of the celebrated R8 V10 formula into an even more concentrated and potent form. A total of 33 examples of the most extreme road-going R8 to date will become available to order in the summer at an OTR price of £142,585.

The R8 GT benefits from the considerable expertise gained in paring back the weight and maximizing the performance potential of the R8 LMS GT3, the circuit car with which it draws obvious parallels, and which won 23 races in its

Nine of these kilograms were lost through the use of thinner glass for the windscreen, and a strong but light polycarbonate for the bulkhead and the window in the rear hatch. Lighter sheet metal and additional cutouts shaved a further 2.6 kilograms from the aluminium ‘boot lid’ covering

the 100 litre luggage compartment at the front, and at the rear the replacement of the speed activated rear spoiler with a fixed rear wing docked an additional 1.2 kilograms.

Use of carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) for the rear ‘bonnet’ has eliminated a further 6.6 kilograms, and a new CFRP rear bumper and CFRP sideblades also save 5.2 and 1.5 kilograms respectively. With its minimal weight and extremely high strength, CFRP is the ideal material for a high-performance sports car, and Audi has broad-based expertise in its use.

The technical components of the R8 GT have not been ignored either. One kilogram has been deducted from the brake system, four kilograms from the aluminium caps of the brake discs, 9.4 kilograms from the battery, 2.3 kilograms from the air intake module and 2.8 kilograms from the insulation of the engine compartment.

The interior also offered substantial weight-saving potential. Numerous details have been further refined, key among these being the fitting of lightweight carpeting which accounts for 7.9 kilograms and the installation of bucket seats with a glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) chassis which cut 31.5 kilograms.

FIFA WORlD CUP, 2010 SOUTH AFRICA!

alGeRiaAlgeria will end a 24-year absence from football’s top table when they kick their first ball at the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™. Les Fennecs (the Desert Foxes) may have won the CAF African Cup of Nations since appearing at Mexico 1986, but they spent a long time in the wilderness before slowly working their way back as a competitive force at the start of the century.

aRGentinaDespite a tortuous qualification campaign, Argentina are travelling to South Africa with serious designs on winning the title for the first time in 24 years. To achieve that goal, the 1978 and 1986 world champions have pinned their faith in coach Diego Armando Maradona, the country’s most famous footballing son and the inspiration behind the second of those memorable triumphs.

aUstRaliaAfter a 32-year absence from the world stage, Australia made a strong statement at the 2006 FIFA World Cup™, reaching the knockout stage where it took a last-minute goal from eventual champions Italy to eliminate Guus Hiddink’s team. The squad, now under another Dutchman, Pim Verbeek, features many of the Germany 2006 personnel and is a battle-hardened and experienced group.

bRazilIt almost goes without saying that Brazil, the five-times world champions, go into every FIFA World Cup™ heavily favoured to add yet another star to the legendary Amarelinha shirt. Having played for A Seleção at three editions of the global showpiece, coach Dunga will be fully aware that any outcome other than a sixth world crown will likely be considered a failure.

CameRoonThough their light may have faded somewhat since they brightened up the world stage at the 1990 FIFA World Cup™, Cameroon are not a side to underestimate at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. The top African nation in FIFA’s rankings, they also bring Africa’s richest pedigree to the finals. They have appeared a continental-best five times in the World Cup, and no other African side has yet eclipsed their historic run to the Italy 1990 quarter-finals – though Senegal equalled the achievement in 2002.

CHileChile’s recent renaissance has been capped by a return to the FIFA World Cup™ finals following a 12-year absence. In the international wilderness since France 1998, when Marcelo Salas and Ivan Zamorano showcased their consummate finishing skills, La Roja believe they have the resources to emulate their illustrious predecessors and advance beyond the group phase.

ivoRy CoastIf an African team is to make a major impact on the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ finals in South Africa, Côte d’Ivoire are seen by many as the most likely candidates. And with world class talent throughout the starting 11, it’s no wonder. Les Elephants also a point to prove after being eliminated in the first round at Germany 2006, albeit in an extremely difficult group, where they lost 2-1 to giants Argentina and the Netherlands before coming from two goals down to beat Serbia and Montenegro 3-2.

denmaRkAfter a six-year absence, Danish Dynamite is once again set to explode on the elite world footballing scene. The Scandinavians missed out on both the 2006 FIFA World Cup™ in Germany and UEFA EURO 2008 in Austria and Switzerland, but

the FIFA founder members blazed an impressive trail en route to a berth in South Africa next summer.

enGlandDubbed English football’s ‘golden generation’, only to fall flat at UEFA EURO 2004 and the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany™, South Africa 2010 may well be the last chance of international silverware for some of the most well-known faces in the world game.

FRanCeFrance crossed a new threshold in qualifying for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™, having never before graced the finals on four consecutive occasions. Les Bleus have become a regular presence in recent years, having earned a reputation as one of world football’s leading teams since the late 1990s.

GeRmanyThree-time FIFA World Cup™ winners Germany are usually there or thereabouts when the honours are handed out, and the current national squad will head for South Africa with their sights and expectations set appropriately high.

GHanaThe only African side to get out of the group stage at the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany™ and the first to qualify for South Africa 2010, Ghana are anxious to prove themselves as the cream of the continent. Though this will be only their second appearance at the finals, the Black Stars have enjoyed considerable success at all levels of international football.

GReeCeAfter seemingly coming from nowhere to triumph at UEFA EURO 2004, Greece continue to defy the odds under wily coach Otto Rehhagel and have clinched qualification for only their second FIFA World Cup™ finals.

HondURasHonduras reached the finals of the FIFA World Cup™ for only the second time in dramatic fashion, an equaliser in the dying seconds of the USA’s clash with Costa Rica triggering frantic celebrations from Los Catrachos’ fans thousands of miles further south.

italyDefending champions Italy will naturally be one of the leading contenders to emerge triumphant at the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ South Africa. The only country along with Brazil to have won the tournament twice in succession, Marcello Lippi’s

men will be vying to match the performance of their pioneering predecessors in 1934 and 1938.

JaPanBoasting one of the strongest squads in Asian football, Japan, winners of three of the last five editions of the AFC Asian Cup, have high hopes for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ - their fourth appearance at the global showpiece.

koRea dPRKorea DPR seemingly came from nowhere to storm into the Asian Zone’s final round of qualifying, where they defied sizeable odds to take one of the continent’s four automatic spots at the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™.

koRea RePUbliCAsia’s most frequent visitors to the FIFA World Cup™, Korea Republic are also the continent’s most successful team at the showpiece event. The Taeguk Warriors will be hoping to translate their regional dominance on to the world stage again when South Africa 2010 kicks off.

mexiCoAfter a turbulent couple of years that has seen three coaches come and go and more than sixty players pull on the famous green jersey, Mexico have returned to calmer waters under the steadying influence of Javier Aguirre.

netHeRlandsThe final or bust. The Oranje have set lofty aims for their campaign in South Africa, 32 years after their 3-1 extra-time defeat by Argentina in the showpiece

game, which itself came four years on from their 2-1 final loss to West Germany.

new zealandAfter a disastrous campaign four years ago, New Zealand bounced back in emphatic fashion under coach Ricki Herbert to qualify for their first appearance on the world stage in 28 years following a debut showing at Spain 1982.

niGeRiaExpectations are diminished for Nigeria at the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™, but it was not long ago that the Super Eagles were seen as the most likely African nation to finally reach the last four of a FIFA World Cup.

PaRaGUayHaving just put together their best ever qualification campaign, Paraguay are entitled to think big ahead of their fourth consecutive appearance at the FIFA World Cup™ finals.

sPainOn a scale of one to ten, Spain’s performance in qualifying for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ can only be given top marks. On top of wins in each of their ten games, La Roja were the European Zone’s second top scorers with 28 goals while conceding a miserly five at the other end.

switzeRlandSwitzerland will be appearing at the FIFA World Cup™ finals for the ninth time when next summer’s tournament gets underway in South Africa, where coach Ottmar Hitzfeld and his men are aiming for more than just a supporting role.

URUGUayFew nations have the footballing history of Uruguay. Nestling on the northern bank on the River Plate, the country has a population of a little over three million yet boasts an impressive collection of world, Olympic and continental titles and a record that compares favorably with the world’s best.

UsaWith typical efficiency, the United States reached the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ by qualifying in first place in the final six-team Hexagonal phase of North, Central America and Caribbean Zone qualifying.

Llanfairfechan was developed in the late 19th Century as a Victorian holiday resort, popular for its sea air and safe bathing. Much of the town’s Victorian character remains, with a long spacious promenade and original stone built shops in the busy town centre, now a conservation area.

The area is rich in history with evidence of prehistoric hut settlements and sites of Stone-Age axe production. A prominent feature above the town is Dinas, which can be seen from most locations in the town, with its Iron Age hill fort.

In the hills above Llanfairfechan, the ancient Roman Road forms part of an historic trail. A leaflet describing this trail is available from newsagents and cafes in the town.

Meini Hirion Stone Circle, known locally as The Druids Circle is within easy walking distance.

Standing above the town is St Mary’s Church, from which the town takes its name, first mentioned in 1253. The present building, on a circular Druid site, dates from 1849.

The town has a resident population of about 3,500 and lies within easy reach of all the main towns, scenic areas and recreation centres in North Wales.

You will find a selection of essential shops and services along the main streets, good facilities in the beach area, and interesting features in the town’s architecture and its history. Its diverse nature and amenities give the town advantages

Llanfairfechan is a delightful seaside town set amid the beautiful countryside and spectacular mountain scenery at the northern end of the Snowdonia National Park. Its central position overlooking the Menai Strait provides excellent views of the Isle of Anglesey and the Great Orme’s Head at nearby Llandudno.

over some larger resorts and make it an excellent centre for visitors, either for the day, or to stay.

Llanfairfechan is an excellent starting point and base for many walks, to take advantage of viewing woodlands, mountain scenery and seascapes. The walks can be varied to suit your available time, physical abilities and the prevailing weather conditions. Walks can take under an hour in the town area or for a whole day, across routes strenuous or leisurely.

Llanfairfechan’s long stretch of sandy beach, holder of the Blue Flag Seaside Award, is a delight for families with young children.

There is a children’s playground with paddling pool, swings, roundabout and picnic areas. Ample free parking is available in the car parks on the promenade and in the town.

At the eastern (Conwy direction) end of the promenade are Victoria Gardens with children’s playground, skate park and picnic areas. To the

west (Bangor direction), the ‘Cob’ footpath leads along the embankment to Shell Island, the Morfa Madryn, Glan y Môr Elias and Traeth Lafan Nature Reserves.

Llanfairfechan’s beach was awarded a Blue Flag for the first time in 2009 and has been renewed for 2010.

The Blue Flag is an internationally recognised symbol of a clean, tidy and

safe beach. Ten beaches around Wales lost their Blue Flag in 2009, but Llanfairfechan was one of two which gained the award.

Cllr Andrew Hinchliff, said in 2009: “I am really pleased. We have missed out on Blue Flag status for a few years running, due to the measurements. We never had any doubt that it was safe, but it will benefit the town.”

The Blue Flag website has said this about the beach, “A north west facing fine sand/shingle beach with fantastic views of Anglesey, the Menai Strait and the Great Orme. The beach is popular with bathers. It is backed on its shoreward side with an extensive grassed picnic area which incorporates both a children’s play area and

model boating lake. The beach is adjacent to the North Wales Coastal Path and Traeth Lafan nature reserve which is extremely popular with bird watchers.” Llanfairfechan boasts some of the finest walks in the area to suit all ages and abilities. Apart from the lovely walk along the Cob embankment towards Aber, there are other short walks within the town.

Terrace Walk leads to the Three Streams where you will find a panoramic view of the whole coast.

For those who prefer more strenuous exercise, there are numerous walks in the mountain uplands, leading to Aber Falls, Aber Lake, the Druid’s Circle and the old Roman Road.

Llanfairfechan also serves as an ideal base for the high level mountain walks into the Carneddau range, with such challenging peaks as Tal-y-fan (2,001 ft.), Drum (2,529 ft.) and Foel Fras (3,092 ft). It must be remembered however, that these mountains can

be shrouded in mist and clouds - you need some mountaineering experience particularly in the use of map and compass, and suitably warm and weatherproof clothing and footwear. Remember: always let someone know where you are going, the route you intend to take and the time that you expect to return, in case of difficulties.

There are helpful publications available, describing with the aid of maps walks in and around Llanfairfechan.

In and around Llanfairfechan there are numerous rivers and lakes where the amateur or experienced angler can fish for trout, salmon and sea trout.

The sea-shore at Llanfairfechan also attracts many anglers, who generally fish for bass,

whiting, plaice and mackerel on the on-coming tide. Sea Bass visit the West Shore in September and October.

Llanfairfechan is approx 8 miles to the west of Llandudno and is well signposted on the A55. For further details please visit the Llanfairfechan website www.llanfairfechan.org.uk
