As you probably know, the Christmas tree has its origins in pre Christian pagan

religion. It symbolizes the endurance of life in the midst of the barrenness of win-

ter. In the midst of the Thirty Years War in Europe in the 17th century, the ever-

green became the focal point of a peace movement. During the Christmas season

thousands of people cut evergreens and decorated them as a witness to the perseverance of life and hope in the

midst of endless conflict. Soon the evergreen became identified with the Prince of Peace and thus we have the

Christmas tree.

Like many other traditions, the Christmas tree has become separated from its spiritual and historical origins. It

is now a decoration we put up in our homes. The tree creates a festive atmosphere as well as a place for Santa

to put all his presents.

In our house, and probably in yours, the decorations we put on the tree are a kind of family history. There are

ornaments from past generations. There are ones our children made in kindergarten and ones with smiling

faces of 4 year olds who are now parents themselves. There is the ball someone gave us on the occasion of our

first Christmas as newlyweds. Then there are the ornaments people have given us. We have so many orna-

ments that MJ has divided them into two boxes for alternate years!

And then there are the angels. We have always put the angels at or near the top to represent their existing high

above the festival of the holidays. Yet this year I grew daring. I began to place angels further down, down in

the midst of the trumpets and trains, sleds, bells and snowmen, Santas and candy canes, snowflakes and white

doves.

Yesterday, as I gazed at the beautiful tree, I noticed the angels in among the other cultural ornaments. It came

to me that the celebration of the birth of Jesus cannot be neatly divided between the secular and sacred, the ma-

terial and the spiritual. There are angels everywhere!

They are with us in the stores. They are with us at the

parties. They are with us in our family celebrations. They

are with us in our joy and most importantly, they are with

us in the cold, out of the way stables where we do not

experience the joy of the season. The small out of the

way places away from the busy-ness of the festival. Thesmall out of the way places where we can begin to hear

angel voices announcing the good news of a great joy for

all the people: good news of a great joy for us!

You Can Help Make a Difference!

On January 13, approximately 15 UAlbany Cornerstone students will be

traveling to Austin, TX, to take part in the on-going relief efforts in

the wake of wildfires that hit the area. The students will be working

with Faith Village, a joint effort of the Episcopal, Presbyterian,United Methodist and Baptist churches to rebuild homes in the area. The

cost per student is approximately $500. Each student is asked to con-

tribute $200 toward the cost and the balance is covered by fundraisers

and donations from congregations and individual members.

If you would like to "adopt a student" for the trip,

please make your check payable to "Protestant Campus

Ministry" and mail to Rev. Sandy Damhof, Chapel

House-UAlbany, 1400 Washington Ave., Albany NY 12222.Suggested "adoption fee" is $200 but any amount is

welcome!

Hamilton Union Film Club to Reconvene

Sunday Evening January 13 th

The Hamilton Union Film Club will gather on January 13 th and then again on January 27th. The Movie we

will watch is called "The Soloist" Starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jamie Fox.

This film is based on a true story of the relationship that develops between an LA Times reporter and a

homeless man of prodigious talent and serious mental illness.

Besides being a deeply compelling story, the Soloist raises all kinds of

good theological questions about what it means to reach out beyond

one's comfort zone and what Jesus meant when he said "The poor you

will always have with you."

Join us for popcorn and cider at 6:30 - we will watch the first half of the

film followed by discussion on January 13th and conclude on January

27th..
