MISSION STATEMENT
Good Samaritan Hospital is a progressive, tertiary, nonprofit hospital. Our Mission is to provide accessible, quality, cost-effective and compassionate healthcare services that meet the needs of our patients and their families, the community
and physicians.
Good Samaritan Hospital’s centers of excellence focus on advancing the science of medicine and providing outstanding healthcare.
We will manage our resources responsibly, maintaining the financial viability
necessary for success.
This has been an extraordinary year for Good Samaritan Hospital and we are grateful for
the faith our foundation partners, corporate supporters and individual donors have placed
in this hospital. We are honored to have received very generous contributions from the
Lee and Herman Ostrow Family Foundation for our Campaign for Cardiology and from
the general contracting firm of Millie and Severson to support our 10th Golf Classic.
Our Campaign for Cardiology has set a goal of raising $7 million for the completion
of two electrophysiology labs (EP). The EP labs provide our cardiologists with the
most advanced technology to treat the electrical anomalies of the heart and they are
part of a larger project that includes our heart catheterization labs (cath lab)
and hybrid rooms.
We are also pleased to recognize Dr. Smeeta Sardesai’s outstanding leadership and
extraordinary contribution to patient care. As the Medical Director of our Neonatal
Intensive Care Unit (NICU), she has helped to ensure that Good Samaritan Hospital’s
success rate in the care of premature babies remains 25% higher than the California
state average. Dr. Sardesai is an essential member of our Mother and Baby Care
Campaign and is dedicated to helping us raise the funding to secure the most cutting-
edge medical equipment available for our NICU.
We would also like to thank our physicians, nurses and other medical staff for providing
all of our patients with the highest quality medical care. Finally, we would like to take
this opportunity to thank all of our donors for supporting our Campaign for Cardiology,
Mother and Baby Care Campaign, and all of the projects at Good Samaritan Hospital.
Very truly yours,
Charles T. MungerChairman of the Board of Trustees

s a little girl in India, Smeeta
knew most of the expectant
mothers in her little village and
when they were due to deliver
their babies. There were few
hospitals available to the
villagers and most of the
pregnant women delivered
their babies at home with a midwife.
Smeeta would always be there for the
delivery and to hold the new baby. She
was so small herself that to ensure that
she did not drop the baby, she would
always sit on the floor as she held them.
“I loved the newborn babies and would
hold them for hours.”
Today, Dr. Sardesai is Medical Director of
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at
Good Samaritan Hospital’s Davajan-Cabal
Center for Perinatal Medicine and one of
the top neonatologists in Los Angeles. She
has over twenty years of experience treating
the city’s most critically ill infants. For Dr.
Sardesai, her work as a neonatologist isn’t
just a profession – it is a calling. “To be
present for this new life – it is so humbling,”
she explained.
More than Just a Profession
Dr. Smeeta Sardesai was born to be a baby doctor.
A
4
Dr. Sardesai works especially hard to ensure
that parents of the babies in the NICU have
full knowledge and understanding of their
baby’s condition. She works with many new
parents who have struggled for years to have
a baby only to have the baby come weeks
or even months premature. These very
early babies suffer serious and potentially
life-threatening complications such as
under-developed lungs, feeding disorders,
and pulmonary hypertension. Dr. Sardesai
cared for one little boy that was born at 25
weeks and weighed just one pound. His
lungs were seriously compromised and he
had to be put on a high-frequency ventilator
for a significant period of time. His recovery
was slow and complicated, but after three
months in the NICU he was able to go
home with his parents. Today that little boy
is doing “just great.” When a very sick baby
can recover and go home healthy – “that is
what makes it all worthwhile.”
As an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at
Keck School of Medicine at the University of
Southern California, Dr. Sardesai is training
the neonatologists and pediatricians of
tomorrow. Her skill as a neonatologist and a
professor is reflected in the glowing reviews
by her interns. “Dr. Sardesai is an excellent
attending. Her style of teaching is excellent
for the field of medicine...I hope one day to
be able to teach residents and students the
way she does.”
Dr. Sardesai’s medical expertise extends
far beyond the Los Angeles area through
her volunteer work with the Global Medical
Brigade and the Children’s Medical Care
Foundation, as well as her decades of
research in neonatal medicine. The Global
Medical Brigade provides medical care
to communities that have limited access
to essential health care. Dr. Sardesai has
traveled with her students from the Keck
School of Medicine to Mexico, Honduras,
and Haiti to provide desperately needed
medical care to children and infants
suffering from serious medical conditions.
And as a leading researcher in the
prevention of acute and chronic lung injury,
pulmonary hypertension, and feeding and
nutrition problems in premature infants, her
research informs pediatricians all over the
country. Dr. Sardesai and her colleagues’
research on the effects of dexamethasone
(steroids) on chronic lung disease in very
low birth weight babies informed the entire
medical community about the significant
improvement in respiratory outcomes when
these therapies are applied.
As a key member of Good Samaritan Hospital’s Mother and Baby Care Campaign, Dr. Sardesai works to secure the most cutting-edge medical equipment available.
G O O D N E W S FALL 2014 5
For the Sardesai family, medicine is a family
affair. Her one son is a doctor, another
son is a biomedical engineer who makes
medical devices, and her daughter is in
medical school. And the glue that holds it all
together is her husband, Raj Sardesai. His
constant support has given Dr. Sardesai the
ability to have it all – a beautiful family and
an exemplary medical career.
Over the last 25 years, Good Samaritan
Hospital has delivered more than 100,000
babies. We have a success rate in the care
of premature babies that is 25% higher
than the California state average and as
the Medical Director of Neonatal Intensive
Care Unit, Dr. Sardesai is a huge part of
that success. She oversees the day-to-
day functioning of the NICU to ensure
that critically ill babies get the highest
quality care. Each additional day that we
can extend the life of a critically ill infant
increases the odds that the baby will survive
and thrive. “When it comes to premature
babies, every day counts; it’s not a count
down, it’s a count up,” she explains.
As a key member of Good Samaritan
Hospital’s Mother and Baby Care Campaign,
Dr. Sardesai works to secure the most
cutting-edge medical equipment available.
Our Mother and Baby Care Campaign is
working very hard to raise $3.3 million to
purchase new state-of-the-art maternal EKG
monitors, fetal monitors, NICU monitors,
and other equipment for the Davajan-Cabal
Center for Perinatal Medicine. In 2013,
we delivered 4,000 babies and about
400 of those babies were admitted to the
NICU. This new equipment will allow Good
Samaritan Hospital’s outstanding medical
team to continue to lead the way in the care
of premature and critically ill infants.

The Staff at Good Samaritan Hospital oversee the day-to-day functioning of the NICU to ensure that critically ill babies get the highest quality care.
Try something new! For most of us, change
is hard; it takes preparation, commitment
and support. Because of your generous
philanthropic support, Good Samaritan
Hospital’s Community Health Education
department facilitates people’s ability to
make healthy lifestyle changes. Through
interactive teaching methods, our Health
Education Specialists, Registered Dietitians,
and Registered Nurses help participants
gain new knowledge and skills that improve
their health.
Maternal and Child HealthOur perinatal classes in English, Spanish
and Korean provide new moms with the
skills to have a healthy pregnancy and learn
how to feed and care for their babies. Health
Education classes such as Breastfeeding
and Infant Nutrition, Baby Care, Diabetes
During Pregnancy, and Healthy Habits
for New Moms have provided important
perinatal education for over 760 parents.
When asked about the first weeks at home
with their new infant, one dad commented,
“The baby behaved just like you said. We
took turns keeping our son skin to skin,
slept when he slept and fed him as soon
as we saw the hunger signs…Yeah, it was
challenging, but worth it.”
Making a Positive Impact on Our Community’s Health
6
Community Health Educators Prisca Ho, RD, RN (left) and Coralyn AndresTaylor, RD, MPH, CHES (right), teach a course in Living with Diabetes that focuses on prevention of diabetes and information about healthy food choices, proper portions, and the importance of exercise.
Health Education and Philanthropy:
6
Philanthropy is a Powerful Partner in the Prevention and Management of Chronic DiseaseCardiovascular disease is the number
one cause of death in Los Angeles. This
year, through grants, and donations from
individuals and corporations, GSH has
made a positive impact on 260 people
who participated in Heart H.E.L.P. (Healthy
Eating and Lifestyle Programs). Community
members learned to reduce risk factors such
as high blood pressure, high cholesterol,
smoking, obesity, sedentary lifestyle, and
poor eating habits. They also learned to
recognize the signs and symptoms of a
heart attack or stroke and take life
saving action.
For example, six months after attending
classes, a participant’s father had a
sudden, severe headache. Fortunately, the
participant recognized this as a potential
stroke and called 911. Her father received
timely medical attention and made a
full recovery.
Living With Diabetes Diabetes education classes focus on
diabetes management and the prevention
of complications with the M’s-- Meals,
Movement (exercise) Monitoring, Medicine,
Medical support and Mental health. There
is another “M” that makes all the others
possible: Money. Once again, because of
your generous support, more than 730
community members have gained new
knowledge and skill to prevent or manage
diabetes.
One participant commented, “This stuff
really works! These pants used to be so
tight; now I need a belt to hold them up!”
Another grateful participant said, “My doctor
kept pestering… encouraging me to take
these classes. And I’m so glad he did.”
Because of your generous
philanthropic support,
Good Samaritan Hospital’s
Community Health
Education department
facilitates people’s ability
to make healthy lifestyle
changes.
G O O D N E W S FALL 2014 7

Millie and Severson
his issue of Good News is pleased to honor the firm of Millie
and Severson for its commitment to giving back. Millie and
Severson is not only the contractor entrusted with the
construction of the new Good Samaritan Medical Pavilion –
dedication is set for Fall, 2015 – but it also lives out its
commitment to being a good corporate citizen by being a
donor to the hospital.
“We are committed to providing each of our partners with assistance
in their philanthropic endeavors. We believe in giving back to the
organizations we serve in some capacity as befits the organization
and its needs, and we welcome and are honored to be part of such
opportunities,” says John Grossman, Senior Vice President.
A Corporate Good CitizenIn his book, Poor Charlie’s Almanack, Charles
T. Munger, the Chairman of Good Samaritan
Hospital’s Board of Trustees, writes, “I feel
that those of us who have been very fortunate
have a duty to give back.”

Millie and Severson backs
up those words with
action. The company
has been a donor to
Good Samaritan each
year since 2012, and in
2014 the firm became a
major sponsor of the Good
Samaritan Golf Classic.
With appropriate pride,
Grossman describes a
culture of philanthropy at
his company. “Not only
do we make gifts as a
corporation, but many of
our owner-employees act
individually with their own
time, effort or financial
contributions to support
their personal charities of
choice.”
Founded in 1945, Millie
and Severson takes
pride in being a local
company – corporate
headquarters are in Los
Alamitos – that builds
local projects. “We build
local projects – medical
office buildings, hospitals,
schools and universities,
churches, parks and more
– that enhance Southern
California, where our
owner-employees not
only work but live,” says
Grossman.
Good Samaritan Hospital’s

The state-of-the-art
facility will be home to
an Ambulatory Surgery
Center, radiation oncology
and physician offices. It
will also feature a new and
highly-anticipated café.

When asked to comment
on what stands out about
the new Medical Pavilion,
Grossman made an
interesting observation.
“It is not one thing. The
building itself will be
wonderful, but what
really stands out is the
process – a collection
of incredible people (He
holds Mr. Munger in the
highest esteem!), with
great intellectual capital,
working collaboratively
to accomplish something
that will be of great
value to Good Samaritan
Hospital and the many
communities it serves.”

r. Ostrow had been treated
for atrial fibrilation – the
symptoms are irregular
heartbeat, light-headedness,
palpitations, chest pain and
decreased activity – with only
marginal success at another
prominent Los Angeles hospital for many
years. Well over 70-years-of-age, his
physicians finally told him that there was
nothing more they could do for him.
“That is when he heard about Dr.
Cannom,” explains Herman’s daughter,
Jeanette Matye. Dr. David S. Cannom,
Director of the Heart & Vascular Center,
successfully ablated her father. “The
results were immediate and amazing,”
she says. “For the last eleven years of
his life – he died at age 88 – he had no
symptoms of atrial fibrillation at all.”
In gratitude for the excellent and life-
changing care he received from Good
Samaritan Cardiologists, and with the
encouragement of his fiancée, Mrs. Gloria
Billingsley, Dr. Ostrow made a pledge of
$1,000,000 from The Lee and Herman
Ostrow Family Foundation. When he
died prior to the fulfillment of the pledge,
Jeanette, the President of the Foundation,
made sure that the gift was completed in
its entirety.
The Lee and Herman Ostrow Family Foundation
Philanthropy from the HeartHerman Ostrow, D.D.S., was a grateful and very
generous man. That combination of attributes
resulted in a principal gift to the Heart & Vascular
Center of Good Samaritan Hospital. The hospital
is deeply grateful.

Daughter and grandson, Jeanette and Adam Matye stand proudly by a portrait of Dr. Herman Ostrow.
The generosity he displayed as a
grateful patient was nothing new for
Herman Ostrow. In a 2009 visit to the
Griffith Observatory he observed the
donor wall and was prompted to give
consideration as to how large private
gifts could decisively impact worthwhile
organizations. Just a year later, in January
2010, he gave a donation that prompted
USC to name its dental school in his
honor: The Herman Ostrow School
of Dentistry.
On the occasion of the ceremony marking
that gift, Dr. Ostrow said, “This is the best
thing I have ever done; and it is the right
thing to do!”
A lifelong resident of Southern California,
Herman was born in East Los Angeles. He
graduated from the University of Southern
California School of Dentistry in 1945
and served as a dentist in the U.S. Army
during the Korean War.
Though he continued the practice of
dentistry for 17 years, Dr. Ostrow found
that his greatest interest was in the real
estate and construction business. In
addition, he developed an abiding
interest in collecting and cultivating
rare fruit trees.
Today, The Lee and Herman Ostrow
Family Foundation continues the
philanthropic work of its founder,
especially supporting causes within the
Jewish community. Good Samaritan
Hospital is thankful for our relationship
with this remarkable man – along with
his daughter and grandson, Jeanette and
Adam Matye – and is pleased to honor
him in this edition of Good News.

Heart & Vascular Center, successfully

fibrillation at all.”
Dr. David Cannom and the state-of-the-art equipment of two new electrophysiology laboratories (EP labs) helped by the new Campaign for Cardiology – beginning in 2014 – will raise $7 million for the construction.

“Even the smallest act of
caring for another person is like
a drop of water -it will make ripples
throughout the entire pond...”
—Jessy and Bryan Matteo
A planned gift is an easy way to
accomplish that and make a difference
in the lives of many. It is the mission
of Good Samaritan Hospital to
provide accessible, cost-effective and
compassionate healthcare services of
the highest quality. Planned gifts made
today stress the importance of fulfilling
the mission and financial needs of the
future, while also offering tax benefits
for you. We very much appreciate and
depend upon outright contributions
for immediate use, but by joining The
Legacy Society at Good Samaritan
Hospital you will ensure quality
healthcare that will have an impact for
many generations to come. We honor
those special friends who have joined
us in planning for the future through
inclusion in their estate plans.
There are many ways you can join
The Legacy Society. Make a provision
in your estate plans by considering
assigning an insurance policy or by
funding a charitable gift annuity.
Many of our donors like the immediate
income tax deduction and the security
of knowing they will always have a
reliable source of income. A bequest
is a simple and effective method to
leave a legacy after your lifetime. You
could give Good Samaritan Hospital a
specific asset, dollar amount, or you
could leave us a percentage of the
remainder of your estate, after providing
for your family members. Naming Good
Samaritan Hospital as the beneficiary of
your retirement plans can result in
tremendous income to Good Samaritan
Hospital and estate tax savings for
your estate.
Good Samaritan Hospital is here for
you - providing the highest quality of
emergency room services, heart and
vascular care, and perinatal and neonatal
intensive care in the Los Angeles area.
We are honored to accept planned gifts
that offer general support or provide for a
specific area that is close to your heart.
Please contact Andrea Morseburg if you
have any questions regarding a planned
gift and she will be glad to provide more
information about your options.
