We hope you enjoy the tal- ent displayed by our music department’s presentaon of a vari- ety of musical pieces for your enjoyment. As with all elements of our programs here at LHSKC, we proclaim “to God be the glo- ry”. Recently you may have heard several school districts on both sides of the border threatening to cut budgets of the arts pro- grams. Why are these budgets the first ones we determine to be slashed from a high school experience? Why not math, sci- ence, or English? I pose these quesons because this queson has lingered for many years. Whenever you add items to a curriculum, you must subtract or your school day be- comes significantly longer. Most of us realize that 180 days in one calendar school year is the maximum amount of me any student can expect to pay aenon, be exposed to edu- cated mentors, process informaon, and learn to apply said experience in a meaningful manner. Of course, I jest. The lack of the ability to change thought paerns, tradions, and customs seems to point to an inability to think creavely, openly, and progressively. The study of music and the applicaon of the skill of performing music are opportunies for our youth to become creave, to appreciate the beauty involved in God’s creaon, and to expand horizons beyond mere knowledge acquision. Talented mentors equipping stu- dents with the appreciaon of the arts and honing their skills in a performance applicaon should be treasured moments in an individual’s development. Perhaps the Bible can shed some light on this subject. David in Psalms 49:4 “I will incline my ear to proverb; I will solve my riddle to the music of the lyre.” This is David con- necng intellectual thought and problem solving to the beauty of a musical composi- on. Paul in 1 Corinthians 13:1 “If I speak in tongues of men and angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.” Paul comments on understand- ing the appreciaon of fine music versus a musical rendion of poor quality. In other words, the beauty of music was revered and considered God-like. There are dozens and dozens of passages which speak of praising God through the beauty and grandeur of mu- sic. Music, physical art, dance, the theater are all examples of an expression of a high level of intellectual advancement. Cut the budget, reduce the opportunies, limit the creavi- ty? Please tell me this is not happening in an already culturally deprived and depraved so- ciety. We at LHSKC will connue to promote the arts and salute all students who partake in this learning and developmental process. God bless. Dr. Cary Stelmachowicz

October 2016

Welcome to the fall music concert. We hope you enjoy the tal-ent displayed by our music department’s presentation of a vari-ety of musical pieces for your enjoyment. As with all elements of our programs here at LHSKC, we proclaim “to God be the glo-ry”.

Recently you may have heard several school districts on both sides of the border threatening to cut budgets of the arts pro-grams. Why are these budgets the first ones we determine to be slashed from a high school experience? Why not math, sci-ence, or English? I pose these questions because this question has lingered for many years. Whenever you add items to a curriculum, you must subtract or your school day be-comes significantly longer. Most of us realize that 180 days in one calendar school year is the maximum amount of time any student can expect to pay attention, be exposed to edu-cated mentors, process information, and learn to apply said experience in a meaningful manner. Of course, I jest. The lack of the ability to change thought patterns, traditions, and customs seems to point to an inability to think creatively, openly, and progressively.

The study of music and the application of the skill of performing music are opportunities for our youth to become creative, to appreciate the beauty involved in God’s creation, and to expand horizons beyond mere knowledge acquisition. Talented mentors equipping stu-dents with the appreciation of the arts and honing their skills in a performance application should be treasured moments in an individual’s development.

Perhaps the Bible can shed some light on this subject. David in Psalms 49:4 “I will incline my ear to proverb; I will solve my riddle to the music of the lyre.” This is David con-necting intellectual thought and problem solving to the beauty of a musical composi-tion. Paul in 1 Corinthians 13:1 “If I speak in tongues of men and angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.” Paul comments on understand-ing the appreciation of fine music versus a musical rendition of poor quality. In other words, the beauty of music was revered and considered God-like. There are dozens and dozens of passages which speak of praising God through the beauty and grandeur of mu-sic.

Music, physical art, dance, the theater are all examples of an expression of a high level of intellectual advancement. Cut the budget, reduce the opportunities, limit the creativi-ty? Please tell me this is not happening in an already culturally deprived and depraved so-ciety. We at LHSKC will continue to promote the arts and salute all students who partake in this learning and developmental process.

God bless.

Lutheran High School of Kansas City Fall “Sampler” Concert 2016

“Oh sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things! His right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him.” Psalm 98:1

Lutheran High School Concert Band Fanfare and Flourishes James Curnow

Fanfare For the Common Man Copland/Longfield

Chorale Prelude on Abide with Me Fred J. Allen

Abide with me; fast falls the eventide; The darkness deepens; Lord with me abide. When other helpers fail and comforts flee,

Help of the helpless, O abide with me.

I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless; Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness.

Where is death’s sting? Where, grave, thy victory? I triumph still, if Thou abide with me.

Praise to the Lord, the Almighty Arr./McChesney

Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation! O my soul, praise Him, for He is thy health and salvation!

Let all who hear now to His temple draw near; Praise Him in glad adoration.

This is My Father’s World Sheppard/Behnke

This is my Father’s world, and to my listening ears All nature sings, and round me rings the music of the spheres.

This is my Father’s world: I rest me in the thought Of rocks and trees, of skies and seas;

His hand the wonders wrought. This is my Father’s world, why should my heart be sad?

The Lord is King—let the heavens ring. God reigns—let the earth be glad!

O God beyond all praising, we worship you today and sing the love amazing that songs cannot repay;

For we can only wonder at every gift you send, at blessings without number and mercies without end:

We lift our hearts before you and wait upon your Word, we honor and adore you, our great and mighty Lord.

Wade in Water Arr./Tucker

Wade in the water, wade in the water, children; Wade in the water, God's gonna trouble the water!

See that host all dressed in white The leader looks like the Israelite.

God's a-going to trouble the water!

Toccata on King’s Weston Williams/Compton

Christians, this Lord Jesus Shall return again In his Father’s glory, With his angel train;

For all wreaths of empire Meet upon his brow, And our hearts confess him King of glory now.

Praise, Praise the Lord Lloyd Larson

Praise, praise the Lord, the Everlasting One; Praise, praise the Lord, the Father, Spirit, Son;

The Lord and Creator of the universe, of every living thing. Praise, praise the Lord, our God, Creator, King! Praise, praise the Lord who chose a manger stall; Praise, praise the Lord who’s bringing hope to all.

He came to give his life for us; Christ, the sinner’s friend. Praise, praise the Lord, our praises know no end.

Before the world was formed ,He was beginning and the end. Praise the Lord, O, praise the Lord. Our praise to Him ascends!

The King of Love, My Shepherd Is (Psalm 23) D. Johnson The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.

He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil:

for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies:

thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life:

and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

Precious Lord, Take My Hand Jack Schrader

Precious Lord, take my hand, Lead me on, let me stand,

I am tired, I am weak, I am worn; Through the storm, through the night,

Lead me on to the light: Take my hand, precious Lord,

Lead me home.

to one hope, One Lord, baptism and faith, one God and Father of all,

Who is in you all.

To God be the Glory!

Set Me as a Seal René Clausen

Set me as a seal upon your heart, As a seal upon your arm;

For love is as strong as death, Many waters cannot quench love,

Nor can the floods drown it. Set me as a seal upon your heart,

As a seal upon your arm; For love is as strong as death.

You Are the New Day John David

You are the new day

I will love you more than me

and more than yesterday,

If you can but prove to me

you are the new day.

Send the sun in time for dawn;

Let the birds all hail the morning;

Love of life will urge me say

you are the new day.
