One of the most unique – and surprisingly side-splittingly funny – oneman shows on the road at this writingis “Star Trek,” “Boston Legal,” and “T.J.Hooster” star William Shatner's“Shatner's World – We Just Live In It,”

which returns to the area on Friday, January22 at 8 pm at The NYCB Theatre At Wesbtury.Advance ticket sales are strong, so makeplans quickly; tickets are at thetheatreatwestbury.com or ticketmaster.com.

It's hard to believe that this all began 50years ago: Shatner’s characterization ofCaptain James T. Kirk started an Americanlove affair with the “Star Trek” brand, and with

the larger-than-life personality of the actorWilliam Shatner. In “Shatner's World,” thisone-man force of nature delivers – what else– a larger-than-life performance complete withhis laugh-out-loud humor, signature storytelling, and select musical selections, allperformed in his own original style.

Through anecdotes, songs, jokes, andsome poignant moments, fans will experienceShatner's phenomenal path from classicallytrained Shakespearean actor to cultural iconas he recreates the larger-than-life and mostimportant character he has ever played –William Shatner. The legendary TV star has

cultivated a career spanning over 50years as an award-winning actor, director, producer, writer, recording artist, andhorseman. He is one of Hollywood’s mostrecognizable figures, as well as a majorphilanthropist.

This two-hour show will take audiences on a voyage throughShatner’s life and career, fromShakespearean stage actor to internationally known icon and raconteur, known as much for his unique personaas for his expansive body of work on television and film.

Most TV fans can recant Shatner'saccomplishments without looking themup: In 1966, he originated the role ofCaptain James T. Kirk in the TV series“Star Trek,” which spawned a film fran-chise where he returned as Kirk in sevenof the movies, one of which he directed. He played the title role in the hit series“T.J. Hooker” before hosting TV’s firstreality-based series, “Rescue 911.” Hewon Emmys and his first Golden Globefor his portrayal of Denny Crane on “ThePractice” and “Boston Legal,” andreceived four more Emmy nominations aswell as Golden Globe and SAG Awardnods.

VIP tickets are available, whichinclude a meet and greet with Shatner, premium seating, a limited edition souvenirposter, and an autograph and photo opportunity. For tour updates, follow@WilliamShatner on Twitter, or on Facebookat facebook.com/ShatnersWorld.

Shocking: Hollywood has the stones to makea big-budget film about sports concussions, aserious real-life problem in the big money worldof professional athletics. Not surprising in theleast: Hollywood schmaltzes up what could havebeen an important film in hopes of garnering lateOscar contention, and in the process makes aflawed, unsatisfying movie on a topic that a gooddocumentary filmmaker could have done right(and in fact, has; let us direct your attention to2012's Head Games by Steve James, which, ofcourse, nobody saw and got spotty distribution

even when it was new; somehow, in just a couple of years, both the documentary and thebook it was based on, by former pro wrestlerChristopher Nowinski, are both seemingly out ofprint. Gee, we wonder why).

The New York Times reported in earlyNovember that Sony executives altered the scriptfor Concussion to avoid raising the ire of the all-powerful National Football League. So much forgood intentions – and it probably seemed like a

good idea to cast popular Will Smith, under so much facial padding thathe resembles Denzel Washington at times, to portray Dr. BennettOmalu, the physician who discovered CTE (chronic traumatic

encephalopathy) infootball players. In theend, it all smacks ofsheer awards seasondesperation – make abeautiful star homely(see Charlize Theron,Holly Hunter) andtheir “bravery” leadsto golden statues. However, given all thecorners cut in thisplodding, meanderingopus, it's a waste ofgood greasepaint.

Flawed in everyconceivable way, opening this type ofserious film onChristmas seemedlike a pretty bad idea– the first week boxoffice tallies bore thatout – but then again,so was not making afilm that pulls nopunches, so to speak,on an epidemic that'seither curtailing thecareers of many ath-letes while ruining –or shortening – thelives of even more.

Starring Amy Poehler, Tina Fey, MayaRudolph, James Brolin, John Cena, IkeBarinholtz, Diane Weist, John Leguizamo,Bobby Moynihan, Rachel Dratch, Kate McKinnonDirected by Jason MooreUniversal

Most films by “Saturday Night Live” castmembers suck – for example, for every decentcomedy that Will Ferrell stars in, five of them aredreck (see his current mega-stinker “Daddy'sHome” for further proof). However, Tina Fey, theformer “Weekend Update” anchor, seems to pickand choose her projects wisely – and is smartenough to be cast, once again, with close friendand “SNL” comrade Amy Poehler in a big screen

comedy that's actually pretty darn funny. The premise here is as simple and, well,

base as anything The Three Stogges ever did: Apair of, as the kids would call them, MILF sisters find out that their family home has been put up for sale – so they concoct a scheme tohold a huge party weekend there before they lose the place forever;replace Shemp and Moe with Amy and Tina and you get the idea.

Of course, the Stooges never cursed, and these wisecracking sisters spew more than their fair share of four-letter diatribes here; thiscomedy is definitely not for kids. However, mix in the pathos of bothlead characters in serious crossroads in their lives – as well as a whole

mess of laughs from supporing players Bobby Moynihan, John Cena (!),and Maya Rudolph – and it turns out to be a holiday-released comedythat's got heart as well as pratfalls, dirty jokes, and silly scenes.

All in all, it's a fun night at the movies, no more and no less. With therest of the mallplex filled with action and sci-fi, Sisters is a worthychoice for adults looking for something more than a little offbeat. A tinyspoiler: Look for other “SNL” current and former cast members in supporting roles (or just read our list of credits above).

Musicals New and Old:On Your Feet! • Marquis Theatre

Dames At Sea • Helen Hayes Theatre

I dare you to resist joining the conga if theappealing cast pulls you from your seat as itdances up the aisles in the first act finale of theupbeat funfest “On Your Feet!” Almost giddy in itsinspirational and aspirational message, this newbiographical musical is a joyous excess of salsarhythms, and hot, florescent colors and gentle pastels. The jukebox musical showcases GloriaEstefan hits written by her and her husband Emilioand daughter Emily. The show has a serviceablebook by Alexander Dinelaris (Oscar-winning“Birdman” co-screenwriter) that charts Gloria’s

meteoric rise from a shy, intellectual 17-year-oldwith a gift for songwriting and singing to fronting fordashing young entrepreneur/musician EmilioEstefan’s Miami Latin Boys (appropriately renamedMiami Sound Machine) to becoming a majorcrossover superstar and part of a Cuban-Americanentrepreneurial power couple with her husband, musician, manager, and taskmaster Emilio.

The only clouds in this fairytale American suc-cess story are Gloria’s mother’s (the wonderfulAndrea Burns, in a moving and salty performance)opposition (because of her own thwarted dreams)to Gloria’s career and her relationship with Emilio;the prejudice the Estefans encounter as Cuban-American artists attempting to crossover into thepop mainstream and originate their own Cuban-infused sound (described as a combination of clas-sical salsa rhythms of Cuban comparsas with “afunk baseline and a strong back beat on the drums

and all the lyrics in English”); and Gloria’s determined and triumphant recovery from a nearfatal crash.

The extraordinarily talented Ana Villafane (in herBroadway debut) not only resembles the youngGloria, butalso chan-nels hersound, dances upa stormand winsour heartswith herwarmth, charm, andimmenselikeability. And as thedevotedEmilio,JoshSegarra isdashing, sexy, and charming as well. There is realromantic chemistry and sexual sparks betweenthem, creating a portrait of a loving couple and adynamic partnership. The supporting cast is alsoterrific, especially the hammy Alma Cuervo asGloria’s supportive grandmother and Eliseo Romanas her father, a Vietnam vet later afflicted with MS.Under Jerry Mitchell’s (“Kinky Boots”) sleek, sure-handed direction and choreographer SergioTrujillo’s electric salsa dances, the musical is aspectacle of movement, color and heart.

At the opposite end of the musical spectrum isthe charming small-scaled revival of musical spoof“Dames At Sea” with its simple backstage and bat-tleship sets (by Anna Louizos) and its hardworking, talented cast of six. The musical started at CaffeCine off-off Broadway in 1966 and moved off-Broadway in 1968 where this sendup made a star

of its ingénue, young Bernadette Peters. With abook and snappy lyrics by George Haimsohn andRobin Miller and peppy, melodic music by Jim Wise(all now deceased), the musical is an affectionateand knowing homage to all the 1930s Busby

Berkley backstage musicalsin which a starry-eyed girlfrom the sticks goes on forthe star at the last minuteand becomes an overnightsensation. The charactersare even named after theWarner Brothers stars of42nd Street” and “GoldDiggers of 1933” RubyKeeler, Dick Powell, andJoan Blondell.

The charming and tunefulpastiche songs perfectly capture the period flavor withhummable, jaunty melodiesand clever lyrics. Like theoriginal production, this

revival features a cast of likable and talentedunknowns. Eloise Kropp as Ruby taps up a storm, but lacks Peters’ charisma – however, the attractiveMara Davi as Joan, the wised-up second bananaand best friend, is a dynamite tap dancer and perkysinger with star potential. As Ruby’s beau Dick, thesailor/songwriter who just happens to have a trunk-load of usable songs, Cary Tedder exudes boyishcharm and sings like a dreamboat and the winningDanny Gardner as Joan’s sweetheart dances likeFred Astaire in his jazzier mode. John Bolton handles the roles of frenetic producer and ship’scaptain with comic flair. As director-choreographer,tap master Randy Skinner has devised nifty num-bers for this nimble cast. Dames At Sea is, at heart,an off-Broadway musical, and it struggled finding audiences at Broadway prices. – Jane Klain

Not that there was all that much media hooplato begin with, but Deron Williams’ return toBarclays Center just before Christmas – hisfirst visit since accepting a buyout of his contract with the Brooklyn Nets – was a bust

since he couldn’t play for the Dallas Mavericksthat night because of sore ankles, a problemthat plagued him throughout much of his Netscareer. Nets head coach Lionel Hollins wastesty with the media; whenasked about Williams, hecoldly responded by sayingthat he would not discusshim at all. It was clear thatHollins did not miss havinghim on his roster, butHollins had to have realized from a news pointof view that the return ofWilliams was the biggeststory of that game.

The New York Mets’signing of free agent out-fielder Alejandro de Aza toa one-year, $5.75 millioncontract seemed to infuri-ate many fans based on the reaction on socialmedia and sports call-in radio shows. The animus was not directed at de Aza’s talents, which are adequate for a bench/platoon player, but rather at Mets management for its unwill-

ingness to spend money on a free agent bigbat, particularly in light of the payroll savingsthat the team is getting from MichaelCuddyer’s surprise retirement a couple ofweeks ago. The Mets could use a outfielderwho can hit, such as Justin Upton or DenardSpan, but after seeing the insaneamount of money that Jason Heywardreceived from the Chicago Cubs, it’seasy to understand the Mets (or anyother team for that matter) shying awayfrom talking to their agents, whosedemands must have escalated. TheMets aren't total tightwads; in signing de

Aza, they lost one of theirhomegrown (and inexpen-sive) players, outfielder KirkNieuwenhuis, on a waiverclaim by the MilwaukeeBrewers. “Captain Kirk” waspopular with both team-mates and the media sincehe’s a great guy, but reallyis a glorified minor leaguerin terms of talent. The Metsalso spent money re-signingageless starter BartoloColon, who showed duringthe post-season that he can be anoption out of the bullpen. Theyalso re-signed southpaw reliever

Jerry Blevins, who was effective against left-handed batters early last season before a linedrive broke his arm (and that incident was fol-lowed by a further reinjuring of the arm in apedestrian accident last summer). Hopefully,

Blevins' luck and health will be better in 2016.It didn’t take long for the Al Jazeera report

about Peyton Manning and other older athletestaking human growth hormone to fall apart. The idea that Peyton would have HGH shippedto his home but under his wife’s name simply

didn’t pass the smell test. A high-profile athletewho wants to cheat would be far more sophisticated than that.

Professional Bowlers Association (PBA): ParkerBohn III of upsate Jackson defeated England’sPaul Moor, 210-206, to win the ProfessionalBowlers Association’s Cheetah Championship atthe National Bowling Stadium – and moved intosole possession of fifth place on PBA’s all-timePBA Tour titles list.

The Cheetah Championship, presented by PBABowling Challenge Mobile Game, was the first offour “animal pattern” championships contested during the GEICO PBA World Series of Bowling VIIpresented by Silver Legacy.

Bohn, a 52-year-old left-hander, survived a 6-7

split in the ninth frame and threw a strike on hisfirst ball in the 10th after Moor failed to throw athird consecutive strike on his first shot in his 10thframe to give Bohn a chance. With his 35th career

PBA Tour title, the PBA Hall ofFamer broke atie with fellowhall of famerMark Roth forfifth place on thecareer titles list.He trails onlyWalter RayWilliams Jr. (47titles), EarlAnthony (43),Norm Duke (38),and Pete Weber(37).

“I didn’t exactlymake a goodpass at the ballin the ninthframe,” Bohnsaid. “I hung upjust a little bit, enough to leavethe 6-7, and Isaid to myself,‘Are you kidding? You just handed(Moor) the title.’At that point, all Icould do was sit

on the bench and hope.“When I left the 7 pin, I had a chance and that’s

all you can ask for. I knew I needed a mark to winand the best way to get a mark is to throw a strike.”

Breaking the titles tie with Roth, Bohn said, “issomething I never, ever dreamed would be

possible. But no matter how many titles I win, andhopefully I’m not done, Mark Roth will still go downin history as one of the greatest bowlers who everlived.”

Bohn barely made it into the title match, slippingpast former Team USA member Andrew Cain ofPhoenix, 204-203, in the semifinal round whileMoor, an accomplished European player who wasinducted into the United Kingdom Tenpin BowlingHall of Fame during 2015, threw seven strikes onhis first nine attempts to eliminate Duke, a 39-timePBA Tour champion, 265-224.

USBC Records Broken: According to theUnited States Bowling Congress, some longstanding national records have recently fallen:Chuck Foudray, 84, of Green Bay, Wisconsin, tossed 30 strikes on the way to becoming the oldest bowler to roll an 800 series, while a trio ofMichigan bowlers, Bobby Sanch, Brian McMahon, and Steve Novak (pictured below) came within onepin of perfection in breaking the three-player, single-game record with an 899 effort atCandlelight Bowl in Bridgeport. Both achievementsare pending approval from USBC.

"This definitely by far is the best accomplishmentI've been a part ofin a league setting, and it was a lot offun," Novak said."The whole leaguestopped andwatched our 10thframe, and thatwas really cool. Any of us could shoot 300 on agiven night, but for all of us to have a chance at the same time was something we've never experienced. Even though we didn't get the 900,we did do something that's never been done, and that's special."

Sanch, McMahon, and Novak rolled games of300, 299, and 300, respectively.

than last year when Penn State beat BostonCollege 31-30, also in overtime. Both of thoseuniversities are within one-day driving distanceof New York, which was not the case witheither of these two participating institutions.Either way, there is little doubt that this year’sgame had a positive effect for the city’s economy, as visitors from North Carolina andIndiana spent millions on hotel rooms, restau-rants, taxis, mass transit, and points of inter-est. The game was broadcast nationally onABC, which also helps New York tourism.

Indiana QB Nate Sudfeld concurred with a

chuckle when I pointed out that the two teamswho were playing in the Pinstripe Bowl proba-bly had the highest combined SAT scores ofany squads playing in bowls games this year.He graciously added that Stanford andWisconsin, who were slated to play in SanDiego’s Holiday Bowl, could give them a runfor the money. Many of the players that I spokewith from both teams were seniors who are setto graduate in May. That is rarely the case witheither school’s top basketball players. I askedDuke president Richard Brodhead if he wasconcerned that the increasing numbers of basketball players who play there for the fresh-man season yet leave for NBA glory are tar-nishing his school’s sterling academic reputa-tion. “There are certainly understandable temp-tations for our star basketball players,” he con-ceded, but added that every player has tomeet their academic obligations while they areat the school. He also proudly noted thatCleveland Cavaliers star Kyrie Irving returnedto Durham last season to complete coursework while he was injured.

Sports Illustrated has named SerenaWilliams its 2015 Athlete of the Year. Therewere many who thought that Triple Crown-winner American Pharoah should have beenthe recipient of SI’s highest annual honor. Ofcourse, it might have been tougher forAmerican Pharoah to attend the SI red carpetevent and mingle with its advertisers at theafter-party than it was for Williams.

I was saddened to learn of the passing ofHarlem Globetrotters basketball legend

Meadowlark Lemon, affectionately known as “The Clown Prince of Basketball.” Lemon’s spectacular dribbling as well as outside shot-making made him one of the greatest basketball players ever, but it was his innate comic skills that made the Globetrotters more popular

than the NBA during the league’s first 25years. The annual Harlem Globetrotters TVspecial that always seemed to feature HowardCosell as its host on “Wide World of Sports”always drew high ratings for ABC when I wasgrowing up.

Bill Scorzari (Americana), Huntington: It’s a true southern sound, though emerging from Long Island – Scorzari utilizes his raspy voice to offer a taste of real Americana.Mediacrime (Alternative), Glen Cove: A dreamy mixture of piano and heavy hitting bass. Mediacrime surpasses all expectations and delivers a rocking sound for a new generation of listeners.Reality Serum (Rock), Centereach: A great blend of hip hop and rock. Catchy choruses and deep lyrics prove these are true MCs. Barbiturate (Metal), Great Neck: The lead vocals beautifully ride into any metal lover’s ears. The lead guitars explore melodic riffs, unlike most metal bands today. Meredith O’ Connor (Pop), Cold Spring Harbor: A Broadway-style contemporary singer with lyrics that seem to fall from her diary. Huge range and a heart that belongs on a big stage. Born Of Scars (Rock), East Meadow: With strong vocals and well-crafted harmonies, Born Of Scars is reminiscent of modern post-rock.Alissa Cavallaro (Pop), Commack: With a hot, new style (think Ariana Grande), the singer’s crisp, dynamic vocals are moving and fresh.Axis/Orbit (Rock) Sayville: This intriguing punk-influenced trio has a raunchy sound that hooks you in from the first guitar riffs.Four Trips Ahead (Rock), Flushing: An engaging presence derived from strong vocals and melodies that hint of a strong 90s rock influence. The Offshore Regulars (Reggae), West Islip: From the first notes, this reaches out and won’t let go; the authentic vocals sway along till the end.Azwel (Pop), Huntington Station: Classic rock with pop undertones; a vintage sound meets his own, unique style.Red White & Blues Band (Blues), Bellmore: A powerhouse band; the

vocals fall right into place. A unique take on classic songs, proving less is sometimes more. 32 Pints (Alternative), Freeport: This deep, fluid voice paints a clear picture, while the bassist adds a classic moving 50s vibe. Newland & Miller (Country), Seaford: A harmonizing duo with a true country essence, a perfect blend of stylish lyrics and clean guitar licks.Debbie Williams (Country), Astoria: Williams paints a heartfelt journey through her beautiful lyrics; a real, authentic country singer. Scott Kuchler (Rock), Huntington Station: A unique band that blends well-executed and obscure covers as it mixes in its own style. Kayla Stockert (Singer/Songwriter), Sayville: Raw and unfiltered lead vocals, a true talent both believable and relatable. Stockert has been dubbed a sure bet for future stardom.Steven Rodriguez (Country) East Norwich: Beautifully orchestrated acoustics with lyrics from the heart. Perfect for folk fans. The Kwanzaa Project (Indie), Uniondale: Super-heavy bass-booming party music that fits right in with the current dub-set/dance movement. A real DJ that delivers artistically.Audio Revival (Rock), Astoria: A hint of folk, the words are a story to be told. The guitars and bass are steady as a rock, offering hooks and warmth. The Jared Project (Alternative), Astoria: A catchy opening with a beat; the hard work and professionalism in the well orchestrated track is apparent from the start. Borgo Pass (Metal) Baldwin: Borgo Pass is an undiscovered supergroup in metal; hard-thrashing riffs and deep, screaming tones keep the mood heavy.Bad Mary (Punk) Kings Park: An 80s New York sound that’s been missed. The singer and guitarist keep it raunchy and real. Kate Mills (Singer/Songwriter),

Astoria: Elements of today’s modern pop, but also a unique touch of personality behind her classic voice.Makar (Indie), Jackson Heights: Deeply rooted 90s sound with simple yet rash solos. The lead singer has a uncommon, exciting tone. The Lost Souls (Alternative), Syosset: Strong vocals, tight riffs, and a melody that keeps it all going.Lindsay Benjamin (Alternative), Astoria: Uplifting guitars and drums take the lead, while Benjamin’s strong voice drives it all home.

Jessy Tomsko (Singer/Songwriter), Astoria: A soulful voice with lyrics that seem to come from the heart. There is emotion in every word and strum. The Hesh Inc. (Rock), Long Beach: Blues at its finest; less is more when you sound like you sing from the gut and play with soul. The tone is perfect for serious blues fans.Martron (Dubstep) Huntington: The beat is elevating, the tone is fresh – it all sounds like a perfect fit for today’s rave and club scene.

The return of one of the most unique acts inmusic history – the 2016 version of the realThe Blues Brothers Band & Revue starringDan Aykroyd and Jim Belushi – will takeover the stage at The Paramount inHuntington on Thursday, January 21 at

8 pm. Tickets are now available through paramountny.com.

It's been more than 37 years since JohnBelushi and Dan Aykroyd first tried out their ideaof a traditional big blues and R&B revue (dressedas bees, no less) on NBC's legendary “SaturdayNight Live” – and now, we bring you back to thefuture, as described by the good people atCreative Artists Agency as Aykroyd and Belushislip on their Ray Bans and their alter egos takeover …

“November, 1978. Jake and Elwood Blues

make their national television debut (and first paying gig) on 'Saturday Night Live' with theirbreakthrough, high-energy rendition of SamDave’s classic 'Soul Man.' It was an overnightsensation that catapulted these two brothers fromCalumet City, Illinois to the heights of stardom.'Soul Man' sparked a national summer tour, twoplatinum albums and the landmark feature film,The Blues Brothers.

“Twenty-two years later, after the passing of

Jake, the long-lost BrotherZee finally peeled his facefrom the gutter to carry onthe family tradition: a high-energy, authentic, rhythm-and-blues showband – witha South Memphis accentand an East Texas kick.Elwood Blues returns as‘the legacy’ and joinsBrother Zee as ‘the blood,’singing and dancing theirway through all the greatestBlues Brothers hits: ‘SweetHome, Chicago,’ ‘Messin’With The Kid,’ and, ofcourse, ‘Soul Man.’”

In reality, there havebeen many Blues Brothers(and Blues Brothers-ish)returns in the past 20 years, not including the filmsequel, Blues Brothers2000, that spawned a hitsoundtrack. Jim Belushi andDan Aykroyd, free of theiralter egos, actually recordeda fine album, Have LoveWill Travel, as themselves. It was an unexpectedly spectacular disc that led the way to a full-fledgedBlues Brothers reformationsoon after.

As always, the twosinger/comics will bebacked by some veteranR&B musicians, just as the legendary original BluesBrothers were.

Who: If members of the national recording group Unified Past –guitarist Stephen Speelman, drummer Victor Tassone, bassist David

Mickelson, and new vocalist Phil Naro, and – seem famil-iar, they should: During the 1990s, the band was known asLabyrinth and performed at many top Long Island venues. They’e back and in a big way: During this pastUnified Past released its new disc, Shifting TheEquilibrium, distributed by Florida's MelodicRevolution Records; the event marked theirseventh album release to date. Now based inCentral New York, this progressive/power proggroup continues to tour and perform all over thecountry; they're currently lining up their first

shows for 2016.The Artists & Their Sound: From their bio: “Combining

the best elements of the British progressive rock style with a distinctheavy metal edge, Shifting The Equilibrium delivers the goods ingrand fashion: strong musicianship, killer vocals, and memorablemelodies, all presented within a sonic landscape that cuts through tothe heart of the listener.”

“We believe prog rock is becoming more popular in the U.S. witheach passing year, and we think the U.S. fan base is ready for our

R.I.P. Lemmy: Lemmy Kilmisterof Motorhead died on December28. I thought he would endure theway Keith Richards does, eventhough Lemmy reportedly drank abottle of Jack Daniels every dayfor many years, and that's not

exactly vitamin juice. The saddestthing is that his iconic band neverreally caught on in the U.S. as itdid in England and throughout theworld. I like to think that SpinalTap wouldn't have ever come

along if Lemmy and the boys hadn't made themselves a brandwhen the metal genre needed agood wake-up kick. It will remaina mystery why Motorheadremains a cult band inAmerica, but there's nodenying its influence on thehard rock of the 80s, 90s,and beyond. I have beensharing a picture of Lemmyholding dynamite in hishand while proudly wearinga Max's Kansas City t-shirt;listen to "Ace Of Spades"by Motorhead as you readthis, and play it loud!

Godspeed, Lemmy.Spice Girls 20!: One more

way to make me realize that timeis passing me by: There is talk ofa 20th anniversary reunion showor tour from the original SpiceGirls, whose time at the topseems like it happened in anotherdimension. MTV was still rulingthe music industry, the attempt tomake techno (Prodigy, ChemicalBrothers) happen had failed, evenwith MTV's support. Instead, the

kids were about to have their day, just like always; it seemed impossible that bubblegum teenstars could rise again, but theydid: Hanson, Backstreet Boys,N'Sync, Britney Spears, ChristinaAguilera ... and The Spice Girls,

who rose to epic proportions. Teen maniawas back; the girls evenhad their own movie, SpiceWorld. Then, as happens

with girl groups, they startedpulling each other's hair out; PoshSpice stormed out of the groupand married David Beckham, and, inno time at all, after a series of hitsingles and albums, it was over. Will they kiss, make up, and makebig bucks? Stay tuned!

Turntables A Turn-On:Everyone online has been displaying old vinyl albums thatthey rescued from the attic or thebasement, and they were playingthem on new Jensen record players that they received for theholidays. Amazon reported thatthe #1 audio item sold during thispast holiday season was therecord players/turntables segment. Vinyl albums now havemajor display space in FYE andBarnes & Noble stores, and vinylsales worldwide continue to sky-rocket; all the naysayers whothought I was crazy when I saidturntables and records wouldcome back are now strangely

quiet. I’ve renewed my subscrip-tion to Stereophile, and Technicshas announced its first newturntable in more than a decade;Pioneer already has one outthere. This is very good news forthe music biz – and bad news fordownloading and streaming.People want to own things again:They want big speakers, a powerful amplifier, and a better-than-decent turntable to playthose 180-gram vinyl pressings.

Anna Rose:The Rocker Blooms AnewAt first glance, one wouldn’t guessthat Anna Rose, a petite blonde, is aserious rocker – but she's proof thatbig things come in small packages. She’s gearing up for the release ofher new EP, Strays In The Cut.

“I am very much an album artist anda storyteller, so the idea of scaling itall back to the size of an EP was achallenge in itself,” said Rose. “Itforced me to look at the songs in adifferent way, the production, every-thing. These six songs needed to tellthe whole story. The limitations Iplaced on the length made theprocess so much more imaginative inevery other aspect.”

In 2012, Rose also gained attentionfor her sultry take on Arcade Fire’s“My Body Is A Cage.” Rose is set toplay Brooklyn Bowl on January 27;find her at AnnaRoseMusic.com.
