GOOD SHEPHERD PARISH

Message from Monsignor René Mathieu (1) Last weekend, we began Sundays in ordinary time. This season is

called ordinary because we count off the ordinal numbers every week

(2, 3, 4, etc). “It is a quiet period that offers a breather between the

intense celebrations of the mysteries of the birth, death, and rising of

Jesus Christ” (Paul Turner, Pastoral Companion to the Roman Missal).

The clergy wear green vestments during ordinary time as a symbol of

Christian hope. The season of Lent will begin on February 18, Ash Wednesday.

(2) Two weeks ago, Bishop Deeley issued a letter to the “Catholic Faithful of the

Diocese,” announcing “the happy news that we have surpassed our 2014 Catholic

Appeal goal of $2.7 million.” I am delighted to inform you that as of January 15,

Good Shepherd parishioners pledged 880 gifts for a total of $176,558 toward a parish

goal of $158,966. This compares with last year’s parish total of $157,963.

(3) Catholic Schools Week is celebrated January 25-31. This year’s theme,

“Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service,” beautifully

expresses the commitment to excellence and to educating the whole child steeped in

a Catholic worldview. During this week, St. James School will open its doors to the

parish and to the community so that all can share in its special experience. Among

the events planned is the annual kick-off Mass and turkey dinner this Saturday,

January 24, at St. Joseph Church. Join me in thanking teachers, staff, administrators,

board members and volunteers for the important work they do on behalf of the chil-

dren in our parish. In particular, please take note of the open house at the school for

prospective families on Monday, January 26; you can help by inviting families with

school-aged children to attend the open house and to consider a Catholic education at

St. James School. (4) A reminder about our online giving system: Good Shepherd

Parish has an online giving system called WeShare. For more information and to set

up your account, go to www.GoodShepherdParish.us and then click Online Giving.

You can make a one-time or recurring donation using your credit card, checking or

savings account. I myself use this method of contributing to the parish. (5) No matter

the situation, all should assume that we will celebrate scheduled Masses every

weekend, even when the weather is bad. I have cancelled a weekend Mass only once

in 37 years, and that was three winters ago when the storm of the decade left more

than 2 feet of snow in some places in the parish. On another occasion, mechanical

problems with snow removal equipment left St. Philip’s buried in snow with no

access to the parking lot. When there are weekend storms, we will do our best to

make each location ready for Mass at the scheduled time (and we even have a plan

for an “abbreviated” Mass during weather emergencies), but occasionally, Mother

Nature will challenge us in our desire to satisfy our Sunday obligation. In such cases,

the situation of each parishioner is different, and you should consider your safety and

the safety of others when deciding whether or not to participate in Masses on such

days. (6) Thank You of the Week: To the parishioners who planned and organized

the ecumenical gathering at Most Holy Trinity Church last Monday. Thank you!

JOKES PRIESTS CAN TELL, Vol. 5 - Msgr. Tonne: One day I returned home from a nearby farm with two large buckets of cow manure

for our garden. “What’s that for?” my six-year-old asked.

“The strawberries,” I answered.

After staring at the manure for a minute, Kelly asked, “Can I have mine with

Cool Whip instead?” --Catholic Digest

ARE YOU/WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE AN USHER/GREETER IN OUR PARISH? How important is this ministry to Good Shepherd?

Ushers and greeters serve the Church by welcoming people to worship, tending to their needs, helping them find a place, gathering the collection, assisting with processions, and bidding worshipers farewell when services conclude. This ministry is very important in all our churches and for those of you that have been doing this—We thank you! Those of you who would like to take part or find out more about this ministry − join us! We are creating a list of Ushers/Greeters in the parish (experienced and new) to form a committee to represent all our churches in Good Shepherd. Our first meeting will be Tues., Feb. 24th, 6:30 pm at MHT. Please contact Liz at [email protected] or Dan Martin at 361-443-8035; [email protected]. “New” Socks Wanted: The Social Justice &
