GOOD SHEPHERD PARISH THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JUNE 28, 2015

Message from Monsignor René Mathieu: (1) Our annual Vacation Bible School begins this Monday, June 29 and

continues through Friday, July 3rd. This is for children in pre-K through

5th grade. (2) Care of the Sick and Dying: Anointing the Sick, Priest

on Call, & SMHC Chaplain: If you know you will be going to the hos-

pital for surgery or other reason, I urge you to ask a priest to administer

the Sacrament of the Sick before or after any Mass rather than wait until

the last moment when no priest may be immediately available. This is something every

priest is happy to do; your family and friends are welcome to join you so they can pray

for you too. It only takes a few minutes; just ask! For serious, unexpected illness, a

Good Shepherd priest is on call at all times (unless impeded by the administration of

other sacraments). At Southern Maine Health Center in Biddeford and at other area

institutions, ask any nurse to contact the Catholic priest on call. Or you can call the

church office (282-3321). Also, Good Shepherd Parish and Holy Spirit Parish

(Kennebunk/Wells/Ogunquit) support the salary of a pastoral care worker at SMHC. Her name is Janice Biasin-Hanson, and she is a Good Shepherd parishioner. When

patients identify themselves as Catholics upon admission, Janice visits them, ensures

that they receive Holy Communion if they so desire, and communicates with the priest

on-call should anyone need the anointing of the sick or prayers for the dying. In this

she is helped by generous extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion. We owe a

great debt of thanks to all these wonderful people, including those who regularly bring Holy Communion to the housebound. In Sanford, the priest of St. Therese of Lisieux

Parish (324-2410) covers Goodall Hospital. In Scarborough, priests from St. Maximilian

Kolbe Parish (883-0334) are available as needed for patients at the Gosnell Memorial

Hospice House. In Portland, there are priest-chaplains at Mercy Hospital, and the

Catholic Appeal supports several priests serving the needs of patients at Maine Medi-

cal Center. (3) I also want to insure that the Eucharist is brought to the homebound

and residents of nursing facilities. If you are going to experience short or long term

convalescence and cannot make it to Mass for a few weeks or many months, you

should inform the parish office so a minister can bring you Communion. (4) Thank

You of the Week: Last Sunday, June 21, I attended the annual awards banquet of the St. Joseph Council of the Knights of Columbus. Members of the Daughters of Isabella

were also in attendance, working behind the scenes to prepare and serve the meal. We

were joined by district and state officials, including the State Deputy who was a high

school classmate of mine (many years ago). The event was preceded by praying the

rosary in common in St. Anne’s Chapel. As the awards were presented, highlighting

the many activities of the council – some more known to the public than others – I was

reminded once again how many good works are performed by the members of these Catholic fraternal groups, including the ones in Lyman and Old Orchard Beach. I

heartily recommend members of the parish to join one of them. Their projects support

the parish in many ways, but also reach out to support the needs of others in our

communities. Thank you!

JOKES PRIESTS CAN TELL, Vol. 5 - Msgr. Tonne: Two opposing political candidates were debating before a crowd of listeners.

“There are hundreds of ways of making money, but only one honest way,” said one.

“And what’s that?” jeered the other.

“Aha!” shouted the first. “I was sure you wouldn’t know.” - Capper’s Weekly

Help Us Attend World Youth Day in Poland! Several youth and chaperones from our parish will be attending World Youth Day in Poland next summer (2016). Our principal fundraiser

this summer is to operate a paid parking lot at St Margaret’s Rectory in Old Orchard Beach when it is not being used for church functions. We hope to make it available most of the weekends and some weekdays (including Thursday night fireworks). If you are planning a beach day or making a visit to down-town OOB this summer, we invite you to support our pilgrimage by using our parking lot. To make an additional donation directly, please contact Josh Houde at the parish office: 282-4812x117

or send it to the parish office with a note that it’s for WYD. Thanks!
