Good Shabbos!

Parsha Question of the Week:

REVENGE: GOOD OR BAD FOR THE JEWS?

Parshas Kedoshim begins with the Mitzvah to be Kadosh (holy)

because G-d is Kadosh. This is an element of the more general Mitzvah to

follow in G-d’s ways and emulate Him (see TB Shabbos 133b). Yet interest-

ingly, in this very Parsha, we are instructed not to take revenge (19:18),

even though we refer to G-d as the G-d of vengeance and plead for Him to

exact His revenge from the arrogant (Tehillim 94:1). Why is this attribute of

just revenge not to be emulated by us? (See TB Yoma 22b-23a)

HALACHA OF THE WEEK: A FEATURE OF THE BJSZ DAILY HALACHA SHIUR:

WOMEN, MEN & SHABBOS CANDLES

The obligation to light Shabbos candles is upon both men and

women, however the obligation is carried out on a household basis, i.e. the

obligation is not on every member individually to light but to ensure that the

household has Shabbos candles. The privilege and primary responsibility to

light the Shabbos candles in the family home is reserved for the woman, the

Baalas HaBayis. In situations however where there is no woman of the

house, or where she is unavailable to light candles, the man is responsible to

light Shabbos candles. Even in situations where there is a woman of the

house, it is appropriate for the man of the house to participate in some way

in the preparation of the candles for lighting (OC 263:2-3; MB 263:12).
