This is due to the fact that the post office is not paid by the sender as his employee but as an independent contractor charging a fee for a service, and because the sender is not specifically instructing them to deliver it on Shabbos. As such, using a parcel service on Erev Shabbos where there is a specific request for next day delivery could indeed pose a problem. It would therefore be advisable not to send such packages on Erev Shabbos unless it is sent early enough for the package to arrive at its destination before the onset of Shabbos. Parsha Question of the Week:

SEPARATE BLESSINGS

Our Parsha contains two separate sections of blessings, the first (ch. 48)

containing the Bracha of Yaakov to Yosef’s children Ephraim and Menashe, and the

second (ch. 49) the blessings to the Shevatim. This division however raises ques-

tions. First of all, given that Yaakov had declared that Ephraim and Menashe were

to be considered his own children, as Reuven and Shimon (48:5), why were they

not blessed together with Reuven, Shimon and the other brothers? And finally, the

form of their Bracha is completely different. Yaakov places his hand over Yosef’s

children while blessing them, after first having kissed and hugged them. On the

other hand, the Brachos to the other tribes are delivered conversationally, from a

distance. Why indeed are Ephraim and Menashe treated differently than Reuven

and Shimon?

HALACHA OF THE WEEK: A FEATURE OF THE BJSZ DAILY HALACHA SHIUR:

SENDING MAIL & PACKAGES ON SHABBOS

Based on the rules we have previously discussed, it would be permitted to

send a letter before Shabbos even if it is likely that the letter would be processed

and delivered on Shabbos. This is due to the fact that the post office is not paid by

the sender as his employee but as an independent contractor charging a fee for a

service, and because the sender is not specifically instructing them to deliver it on

Shabbos. As such, using a parcel service on Erev Shabbos where there is a specific

request for next day delivery could indeed pose a problem. It would therefore be

advisable not to send such packages on Erev Shabbos unless it is sent early enough

for the package to arrive at its destination before the onset of Shabbos.
