Dear students,

How are you all? I hope you’ve had a glorious weekend. It must be strange as we are

slowly allowed to leave our houses and reconnect with our friends and loved ones. I

imagine you’re more than eager to do so after so much time spent indoors, but

remember that it’s perfectly fine to take a moment for yourself and relax.

Anyway, this week marks something very special indeed: the launch of the

SpaceX rocket! With this in mind, I feel like it would be fun to talk about cutting-edge

technology in this week’s resources. I find the subject completely fascinating, so I hope

you do too!

Let’s start with something really brand new. The SpaceX rocket, launched last week,

was the first time ever that a private company had sent astronauts into space. What does

this mean? Well, maybe soon you’ll be able to buy tickets to travel through space.

Would you do it? Do you think this is the beginning of humanity travelling across the

cosmos?

Where is everybody? That’s the question Enrico Fermi when he came up with the so-

called Fermi Paradox. If there are so many planets in the universe capable of supporting

life, why have we never seen anything? Or maybe you have? Watch this short video and

Have you ever heard of the Turing Test? Invented by the famous scientist Alan Turing

in 1950, the Turing Test is a method of testing artificial intelligence. His theory was that

if someone can’t tell the difference between interacting with a human being and with a

robot, then this robot should be treated as a human. Do you think it’s accurate? How

long will it be before we can no longer tell the difference between humans and

“chatbots”? Once we reach this point, what does that mean for humanity?
