“The Delanys had to face some surprising detractors. Sadie and Bessie recall that lower-class blacks at times viewed achievers as being cliquish or arrogant, and that some cautioned that families such as the Delanys set impossibly high standards for other blacks” (Delany 5).

“Their accomplishments could not shield them from discrimination and the pain of racism, but they held themselves to high standards of fair-minded idealism” (Delany 5).

Having Our Say journal(lead in) According to Bessie and Sadie, “The Delanys had to face some surprising detractors. Sadie and Bessie recall that lower-class blacks at times viewed achievers as being cliquish or arrogant, and that some cautioned that families such as the Delanys set impossibly high standards for other blacks” (Delany 4). (Commentary) People viewed the Delanys as either overachievers or arrogant because of their families cultural values. Society treated them in a negative light instead of celebrating their accomplishments.

(lead in)Bessie and Sadie reflect on all that their family achieved, “Their accomplishments could not shield them from discrimination and the pain of racism, but they held themselves to high standards of fair-minded idealism” (Delany 5). (Commentary) Discrimination and the pain of racism was felt by all of the Delanys. Society treated them with disrespect but the family did not allow this treatment to affect their family and cultural values.

Having Our Say ResearchGroup Research Project Over the past two class periods we have researched important elements found in the novel Having Our Say. We have completed the following steps.

Step . . 1. Get into a group (of your choosing) with five other people. 2. Your group will be given a topic folder with five subtopic folders. Each person in the group needs to pick one subtopic folder. 3. Each student will read your article and find the information you will need to answer the 5 W questions. Take notes to share with other members of the group.4. Each member of the group will share their information with the other members. Each member needs to take notes on the information shared and add to their individual notes page. Each member of the group needs to have a ½ page of notes minimum.5. Using your notes, each member of the group will independently write one to two paragraphs summarizing the important information on your groups topic.
