Exploring Hymnody: "Rejoice the Lord is King"

Early Methodists were persecuted and lived lives of hardship. Charles Wesley, who with his brother John started the Methodist movement, wanted to encourage his fol-lowers. He wanted them to be a singing, joyful people and not get discouraged and lose hope. Paul’s letter to the Philippians gave Wesley the text for "Rejoice, the Lord Is King." Although Paul was imprisoned when he wrote this letter, he wrote a mes-sage of joy and encouragement, stating "Rejoice in the Lord always, and again I say, rejoice." "Rejoice, the Lord Is King" was first published with six stanzas in 1744 in John Wes-ley’s Moral and Sacred Poems. Two years later Charles Wesley included it in Hymns for Our Lord’s Resurrection. Most hymnals include four stanzas, omitting the fourth and fifth stanzas of the original hymn. We sing "Rejoice, the Lord Is King" to the hymn tune Darwall’s 148th. An alternate hymn tune, Gopsal, was composed by G. F. Handel for the hymn. According to Rob-ert Guy McCutchan (Our Hymnody), Charles Wesley and Handel met at the home of Mr. Rich, whose wife had been converted through the preaching of Wesley. She re-quested that Handel compose hymn tunes for "Rejoice the Lord Is King" along with "Sinners, Obey the Gospel Word" and "O Love Divine, How Sweet Thou Art." Handel graciously agreed and composed Gopsal, Cannons and Fitzwilliam."

Glimpses of the resurrection from the congregation….

…a granddaughter singing Jesus loves me as we drive along …my mammogram came back with good results. …could not find my way to GR with all the construction at Alpine. How do I get to Rockford? Worried, checked maps, asked family. The next day as I was driving and still did not know which way to go – my son called and said he knew the best way – he did. I thanked Jesus for bringing me the answer. Simple – God met me and helped me where I was. We express our sympathy to Jane VanderHeide, in the passing of her husband, John last Sunday. And also to son, David & Cherise VanderHeide and family, sister, Barb and Lee Hammond and nephew Stu & Kristi VanderHeide and family. We are thankful for a peaceful passing and pray for peace and comfort for the entire family.

Barb Holtrop is at the American House in Jenison. The address is: American House, Beechwood, Room #13, 8001 Cottonwood Drive, Jenison MI 49428. Phone #: 616-530-9260. Please continue to pray for Don and Barb that God will give them wisdom and strength and surround them with His peace.

From the Deacons - HUNGER, IN THE TRI-CITIES, DOESN'T TAKE A SUMMER VACATION! Next Sunday, July 8, the deacons will pass out slips listing items need-ed to replenish the central pantry shelves at LOVE IN ACTION. Summer is the time when individual, church, and organization donations really decrease but the need for food increases, especially with kids home from school. Any amount you give will be a blessing.

Nursery Update: We will no longer be using the pager system to notify parents. When dropping off your child you will leave your cellphone number in case the church volunteers need to contact you. Volunteers; if you have a cellphone please get in the practice of taking it to church with you when you have nursery duty. If no cellphone is present then we can use the church phones. Pagers will be available if parents do not have their cellphones. Thanks!

Have you noticed the clock up in the church steeple?? It’s newly painted and the time is right!! Harley Dyk and friends have spent a lot of time climbing up and down the steeple renewing the clock. Please take a look and say “thanks” to Harley!!

The next Parish Nurse office hours will be on Tuesday, July 3 from 9:30 to 11:30.

Blood Pressure screening will take place on Sunday, July 15 after the worship service in the Parish Nurse office.

Here’s to your Health: It has been such a pleasure to watch the children engage in VBS this week! Consider these truths about children in the faith community. Children can:

Be forgiven and forgive others. Be a disciple and make disciples. Identify injustice and stand up for the bullied. Pray and lead prayer Worship and lead worship. Share the love of God and extend mercy.

In a world that sends constant messages to children that they may not be valued, lets make our church one place where every child knows that he or she is valued and loved!

We have decided to hold an eight week summer bible study, exploring the stories of 8 women from the Bible and how God worked within their lives. There will be a small vid-eo followed by a discussion that is prompted from a study guide written by Shelia Walsh. We are meeting Wednesday mornings at 8:00 and we welcome anyone inter-ested in fellowship and friendship. Please contact Sheila Warners at 616-502-7205 for more details. -Sheila Warners, Phoebe Risselade and Sydney Fritz

Each Sunday this summer there will be a puzzle piece to write sermon notes. You will find the hand out at the back of the sanctuary each week. Take your notes home and cut out the puzzle piece. By the end of the summer the puzzle will be complete and you will have a reminder of the things we have learned about God's covenant.

Advance notice: Include the book, "Little Fires Everywhere", by Celeste Ng, in your summer reading. We will discuss it during our September Book Club meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 18 at 1:30 PM.
