GOLF ENTHUSIASTS and golf

writers alike continue to put

Kamloops at the top of their “must

play” list, and those who have had

the chance to swing the clubs at area

courses can’t wait to return. Chalk it up to a

number of variables like consistently great

weather, fantastic course conditioning, and

the diversity of area courses. Located in the

heart of the Interior of British Columbia,

Kamloops has long been touted as Canada’s

Most Diverse Golf Destination. Area courses

boast lengthy portfolios of awards from

Best Course Design and Best New Course

in Canada to Most Beautiful and Most

Fun. The most impressive award though is

the praise from satisfi ed golfers after a

round at one or more of the area’s 13

remarkable courses.

For those new to the Kamloops golf

experience, the region enjoys consistently

sunny weather throughout an eight month

golf season and the courses are in close

proximity. But Kamloops’ remarkable

golf reputation is primarily built on the

diversity of courses that run the gamut from

nationally ranked championship

links to resort executives. Play

an alpine mountain course with

dramatic elevation changes in

the morning and a desert course

surrounded by native grasses and cactus in

the afternoon.

To maintain the reputation of excellence,

courses continue to make upgrades,

including the more established courses

which have kept pace with the newcomers.

Of note is Kamloops’ oldest/newest course,

Kamloops Golf & Country Club. The 100+

year old course underwent an extensive

renovation and after a few years of playing

the new layout, golfers are saying its one

of the best conditioned in the city. Talking

Rock also underwent several upgrades a few

years ago and fi nishes with the breathtaking

18th hole that plays along the shoreline of

Little Shuswap Lake.

When considering course pedigrees,

Rivershore Golf Links is a perennial award

winner, providing a classic mix of holes to

reward solid shot making. The course’s

selection to host many championships

is testament to the challenging layout.

Another classic is Sun Rivers. Developed at

the base of Mount Paul, the course is set in

a scenic desert environment among natural

sage and gently contoured greens with big

horn sheep grazing the bent grass fairways.

Arguably the moment in which Kamloops

really came of age as a top Canadian golf

destination was with the opening of Tobiano.

The Thomas McBroom layout is carved

among the hoodoos and desert terrain along

the bench lands overlooking Kamloops Lake.

Eaglepoint is also a favourite among golfers

GOLF IN KAMLOOPS

with strategic doglegs, elevation changes,

and native fescues, putting a demand on

shot making.

Other notables are the Dunes, Canoe Creek

and Sun Peaks. Known as “Nature’s Golf

Course,” the Dunes’ lush fairways carve

gracefully through the sand, while Canoe

Creek has open fi elds, grass-faced bunkers,

and striking water features intended to

evoke a bit of the British Isles. Sun Peaks

has the distinction of being B.C.’s highest

elevation course with greens located at

1,200 metres above sea level - the elevation

helps balls fl y 10% farther. A number of

excellent 9-hole and more executive-length

courses include McArthur Island, Pineridge,

Chinook Cove, and Mount Paul to round out

the incredible golf options. Put Kamloops,

Canada’s Most Diverse Golf Destination, on

your “must play” list this year.

TALKING ROCK GOLF COURSE, the

pride of the Little Shuswap Nation, opened

in August of 2007 and has fast become a

mature and world-renowned course with

a high level of play that leaves golfers of

every skill level eager to return. In fact, both

advanced golfers and those in the learning

stages will fi nd the course offers many

unique challenges. The course meanders

through a mature, sandy forest and fi nishes

with a spectacular 18th hole along the

shoreline of Little Shuswap Lake. Views

from the upper holes are breathtaking and

a camera is a must as panoramic views are

available in all directions.

At Talking Rock, the course blends with

the strong features of the land. Little land

alteration was required thus creating a

course of natural and rugged character that

will require strategy and thought for players

of all abilities. The foliage native to the area

has been left to naturally fl ourish, allowing

for great opportunities to view local

wildlife during early tee off times and late

afternoons. Talking Rock also offers guests

a full service Academy of Golf, Jack Sam’s

Restaurant, and the pampering luxury of

the rejuvenating Le7ka Day Spa.

THERE’S A BEAR IN THE SAND TRAP!Weytk! (Welcome) The Little Shuswap Lake

Indian Band had a unique vision and drive in

its economic development with the creation

of Talking Rock Golf Course and Le7ka Spa.

In promoting Secwepemc culture, the course

and amenities have also allowed the Little

Shuswap Lake Indian Band to develop world

class leisure activities.

The Little Shuswap is traditionally known

as Skwlax, which translates to Black Bear

in Secwepemcstin, the traditional language.

Bears are not uncommon at Talking Rock

notes the course’s Head Professional,

Adam Blair.

“On the #7 hole on the course, golfers will

come across the shape of a black bear in

the sand trap,” says Blair. “The bear is a

symbol of strength and family, perfectly

representing the Little Shuswap Lake Indian

Band. Bears are also able to deliberate about

choices and actions, and that tie in to the

strategy required to golf Talking Rock is

important too.”

THE LEGEND, THE BUILDERThe list of golf courses Robert Trent Jones

Sr. built over his career is extensive. Not

only did he renovate storied venues such

as Augusta National, but also brought his

innovative golf design to Rivershore.

“From the perspective of our team and

many golfers, in terms of shot making

and design, there isn’t a stronger layout

Jones Sr. designed than Rivershore,” says

Kerry Ward, Director of Golf Operations.

Jones Sr. designed a masterpiece with the

17th and 18th holes running alongside the

spectacular South Thompson River.

As a result of the masterful design, the

course has garnered numerous awards

throughout the years and also plays host to

many high profi le tournaments.

IN KAMLOOPS, AWARD winning courses

abound, but the original is Rivershore.

Designed by legendary architect Robert

Trent Jones Sr., this par 72 course stretches

seamlessly over a riverside landscape.

The course is of uncommon conditioning,

challenge, and beauty, laying in a desert-

like setting at the foot of sagebrush-covered

hills above the South Thompson River.

Rivershore is honest, fair, generously

bunkered, and water is used sparingly on

this superb links-style course. Rivershore is

the recipient of Golf Digest’s 4 Star “Places

to Play” honour. Also lending authority to

the course’s reputation for exceptional play

comes in the form of hosting numerous

national and provincial championships

from the Canadian Men’s, Ladies’ and

Senior Men’s Amateur Championships

to the Canadian Tour’s Western

Championship. The course has a practice

facility overlooking the river and pro shop

for golf necessities and gear. Post round, the

Keekwillie Restaurant is the perfect spot

to recap the round with its fl oor to ceiling

windows showing off the panoramic views

of the course and surrounding landscape

from every table.

ON THE 6TH HOLE OF TOBIANO Golf

Course, intrepid golfers are expected to make

a daunting tee shot over a vast canyon. Golf

does not get much more exciting than this.

Every great golf course starts with an

incredible piece of property, but few

settings in the world are better than where

renowned designer Thomas McBroom

created Tobiano. “Tobiano has to be the

best site I’ve ever seen from a drama and a

beauty point of view,” says McBroom.

Located on the site of the historic Six Mile

Ranch, Tobiano offers exceptional golf in a

unique setting: situated on the bluffs above

Kamloops Lake, canyons are the norm here,

and McBroom’s incorporation of them into

his design is ingenious. And then there’s the

fact that the clear blue of the lake “is in view

from some point on every hole,” reveals Golf

Digest contributor Ron Whitten.

McBroom believes “Tobiano is literally as

good as it gets.” This from the man who has

designed courses all over the world and

has 12 courses in SCOREGolf’s Top 100 in

Canada. We’re inclined to believe him.

Expect a golf course that is beautiful,

dramatic, and incredibly fun to play.

AWARDSHaving won countless awards since opening

in 2007, Tobiano is the most acclaimed

public golf course in British Columbia,

recently adding the following to the list:

• #25 in Top 30 Golf Venues in Canada, Golf

Digest 2015

• #8 in Top 100 Golf Courses in Canada,

Canadian Golfer Magazine 2015

• #10 in Top 59 Canadian Public Courses,

ACCOLADES“Tobiano may be the best new course I’ve

seen in Canada. Ever. Period,” SCOREGolf’s

Bob Weeks wrote upon opening in 2007,

while golf columnist Robert Thompson calls

it “a modern golf course to rival the best in

the country.” Fast forward nine years, and

the accolades are still coming: as Mark Hood

from the North Shore News writes in 2015,

“Tobiano is a Masterpiece.”

Tobiano is #1 in so many ways, including being an incredible place to work. It’s a positive atmosphere that fi lters out onto the golf course.”- Shannon McGeady, Tobiano CPGA Head Golf Pro

GET YOUR KICKSNot only does Sun Rivers offer both a quality

traditional golf experience and family

golf experience, but the course is home to

Canada’s fastest growing sport - FootGolf.

“FootGolf is a combination of soccer and

golf and is a great way to experience the

splendor of the Sun Rivers course,” says Sun

Rivers’ Director of Golf, Rob Larocque.

The game is played with a regulation #5

soccer ball on shortened holes with 21-inch

diameter cups. A round of FootGolf takes

approximately two hours to play 18 holes

and all that’s needed is a pair of running

shoes as rental soccer balls are available.

“We offer FootGolf on the course Thursday

through Monday after 3:00pm,” says

Larocque. “We recommend it as a great

later-in-the-day Kamloops experience

followed with dinner overlooking the city

on our Hoodoos Restaurant patio.”

IT’S NOT JUST THE WORLD CLASS golf

in a stellar environment that draws golfers

to Sun Rivers. It’s also the mix of superior

customer service, sweeping river valley

and city views, and the opportunity to golf

alongside a herd of local California Big Horn

Sheep that keeps golfers coming back for

more. Experience just under 7,000 yards

of memorable golf with dramatic elevation

changes, wide bent grass fairways, and

gently contoured greens. Golfers won’t fi nd

the stereotypical golf atmosphere at Sun

Rivers either. The golf resort community

takes pride in blending the fi ne tradition of

golf with new age thinking to encompass a

variety of play with programs like Family

Golf. Hosted Friday, Saturday and Sunday

evenings from mid-May through until the

end of August, the Program includes nine

holes of golf, complimentary club rentals

and balls, and free entry for juniors age 5

to 11. Capping off the Sun Rivers experience

is the Clubhouse, home to a fully equipped

pro shop and the mouth-watering cuisine of

THE KAMLOOPS GOLF & Country Club

(KGCC), a par 72 Championship course,

was redesigned in 2009 to include the

installation of new bent grass greens and

fairways. In maintaining the undulating

fairways framed with mature trees, the

course is characterized by its easy walking,

park-like setting. Also included in the

new design, fairway bunkers and water

hazards were positioned in just the right

spots to potentially catch wayward drives.

The course still retains its friendly feeling

and easy-to-walk reputation, but the

contoured greens make putting a little more

challenging. Incorporated into the design is

a practice area which includes three large

putting greens, practice sand trap, and

a driving range with a number of target

greens for golfers to hone their skills. On site

is an expansive clubhouse catering to golfers

and groups wishing to host their event at

the Club. Golfers aren’t generally surprised

to see an abundance of birds such as bald

eagles, ducks, and Red-winged Blackbirds,

along with the occasional sightings of bear

and deer. Play Kamloops’ oldest, but newest,

golf course and see why golfers call the

KGCC “The Friendly Club.”

100 YEARS OF HISTORYKamloops Golf & Country Club is a one-of-

a-kind golf experience in Kamloops. Not

only is it the oldest course in the region, but

it offers players of any skill level challenges

and different aspects of playability.

“I’ve always said it’s easy to build a hard golf

course, but challenging to build one suitable

for all players,” says Brice MacDermott,

General Manager and PGA of Canada Head

Pro.

Brice believes the course offers the best

of both worlds. Tree lined fairways are

a feature no other golf course in the city

has, and 18 perfectly manicured greens all

feature an area for the most novice of golfer

to run the ball up onto the green.

“Being the fourth Head Pro in the club’s

100 year history, I believe it’s important to

celebrate the past yet recognize the need to

continue to evolve as a club, and we have

many exciting plans for the future.”

WHEN THE CLUBS are packed away

for the day, you’ll be exited to know

that the après golf activities are just

as memorable and one-of-a-kind as

the golf. In Kamloops, the essential

urban amenities

are readily available

and complimented

with the laid back

warmth of our

friendly city. The

vibrant downtown

plays host to a

menagerie of restaurants from fi ne

dining and ethnic eateries to trendy

bistros and a plethora of coffee shops.

Pick up an exclusively made piece of

artwork from one of the many art

galleries’ gift shops, fi nd contemporary

clothing at a modern boutique, and

leisurely stroll the trendy downtown’s

brick sidewalks. The nightlife citywide

is impressive too and sure to make

any golfer think twice about how

early tomorrow’s tee time is booked.

The newly built Cascades Casino has

exciting slots and games and is a popular

stop for live music, as is Chances

Entertainment with bingo, slots, and

live entertainment. Those looking for

a casual spot to kick back when the big

games are on TV stop in at the variety of

sports pubs throughout the city. Wind

down and indulge in a spa treatment at

North America’s only ginseng spa for

the ultimate in relaxation. Wind back

up and top off the night at a live roots

and blues show, learn to two-step at the

local cowboy cabaret, or catch a cheeky

burlesque show. With the incredible

golf paired with ample opportunities for

après golf fun, we bet you’ll let loose and

just play.

Kamloops area and discover all of the

unique fl avours at various farms, craft

breweries, Farmers’ Markets, wineries,

new wineries. Also growing are the craft

breweries in the city, each providing the

perfect atmosphere and service to both

learn about, and try, fl avourful pairings

of unique menu items with handcrafted
