Golder Associates Pty Ltd – Melbourne
Principal Geotechnical Engineer
Dr Chris Haberfield is a Principal Geotechnical Engineer with Golder Associates
Pty Ltd. He is internationally recognised for his work on foundation structure
interaction and soft, weak and weathered rock and in particular the analysis,
design, laboratory and field testing, construction techniques and response of
engineering works (e.g. foundations) in these materials. Chris has extensive
experience in piled foundation design and analysis, numerical (including
advanced finite element) and analytical modelling, laboratory and field testing of
geomaterials, stress analysis, ground structure interaction problems and slope
stability analyses.
Chris brings high level engineering skills and technical knowledge and a practical
approach which have been developed through 20 years of research and teaching
and high level consulting to industry as an academic followed by 15 years as a
consultant solving high level technical issues for a wide variety of projects. Of
direct relevance to this project, he has been responsible for review, value
engineering, engineering design, analysis, construction and testing advice for
numerous low to high rise commercial and residential towers, deep basements,
road/rail separations, bridges, embankments, tunnels, mines and other
developments and infrastructure projects in a wide range of ground conditions
from soft soil to hard rock. Some examples include review and value engineering
for new Gateway Bridge tender design and North-South Bypass tunnel in
Brisbane, review of remedial anchor works for Burnley tunnel and review of
aspects of design of the East Link tunnels and proposed East West tunnel portals
in Melbourne; expert review for arbitration and legal cases involving deep
excavations, tunnels and shafts and engineering failures; design, value
engineering and review for many high rise and/or deep basement developments
in Melbourne, SE Queensland and the Middle East (including the 1.2 km high
Nakheel tower in Dubai and numerous 20 m to 30 m deep basements in
Melbourne and Brisbane); value adding and review for Middleborough road – rail
grade separation and Regional rail Project and the tender and final design for the
New Royal Adelaide Hospital.
Chris has published over 140 refereed papers many of them dealing with ground structure interaction problems, pile performance and analysis. Chris was awarded the 2007 EH Davis Memorial Lecture for his work in foundations in weak rock.
Relevant project experience includes:
Infrastructure and Bridges. Value engineering, review, ground investigation, design, analysis, construction and testing advice for a range of infrastructure projects including Regional Rail Project, East-West Link, Southern Cross Station, Peninsular Link, Middleborough rail separation and remediation of Burnley tunnel in Melbourne, East Link tunnels in Melbourne, portals for East-West tunnels in Melbourne, new Gateway Bridge, North-South Bypass tunnel in Brisbane, wharf facilities in Newcastle, Gove, Geraldton, East Arm, Wiggins Island and Jembayan (Indonesia), Diyar and Nurana reclamations (Bahrain), various wind farms (e.g. Musselroe, The Bluff, Mt Gellibrand, Browns Hill) and bridges (e.g. Kicking Horse canyon (Canada), Saigon II and Phu Mt (Vietnam) and Lal Lal (Victoria)., Saigon II and Phu Mt (Vietnam) and Lal Lal (Victoria).

Large Buildings and basements. Value engineering, review, ground investigation, foundation engineering design, analysis, construction and testing advice for a large number of high rise towers and other large buildings and deep basements in Dubai (e.g 1000 m high plus Nakheel Tower), Bahrain, Abu Dhabi, Oman and throughout Australia (e.g. Eureka and Freshwater Towers, Yarra’s Edge developments, MCG Northern stand (Melbourne), New Royal Adelaide Hospital, Vison and 300 George Street developments (Brisbane), Soul Tower (Gold Coast), Evolution (Darwin) and Kens project (Sydney)).
Slope Stability. Value engineering, review, ground investigation, design, analysis, construction and testing advice for a range of projects involving mine batter stability (Marandoo (Pilbara), Sebuku and Jembayan (Indonesia) and various quarries) and landslips (e.g. Thredbo, landslip risk reviews in various local Shires and for roads (e.g. Dandenong ranges, Dartmouth and Mornington Peninsular).
Dispute and Arbitration. Provided expert witness services in arbitration, mediation and court hearings in the Supreme Courts in NSW, VIC, NT and WA, VCAT, Coroners Court (Vic) and Building Commission (Vic) and for projects in Bahrain and SE Asia. Provision of services for projects involving a range of issues including landslip, damage to buildings, ground improvement, retaining walls and basements, latent conditions, piling, wharfs, tunnels, shafts, dredging, reclamation, bridges, tunnels and mines.
