With the holidays behind us, we’re looking forward to a busy and rewarding 2019 at Council.

In the coming year, we’ll be taking the big Council marquee to markets, local events and footy games across the Shire to talk to locals, so if you see us, please stop by and share your thoughts and ideas.

With a new parliament settled in Spring Street and the next Federal election looming large, Council is passionate about sharing the story of Golden Plains. Our Shire is the fifth fastest growing regional council in Victoria and to deliver all the great projects and services our communities need and want, we will be working hard to secure future investment from State and Federal Government.

As Mayor, a real focus for me are the young people of our Shire – how we can best work together to support and engage youth so they enjoy and find success growing up in our communities. Council is actively partnering with local stakeholders to strengthen youth development in our Shire and we are also

excited to deliver projects, such as the $3M Bannockburn Heart precinct, a civic and community space for young people and their families. We’ll be keeping our community updated on all our projects and news, so please stay connected with Council:

Safer Solution for Animals

Council has updated its animal collection system in line with fellow rural councils across the state to ensure the best management of all creatures in our care.

Last year Council impounded 200 dogs and 300 cats, as well as farm animals, and the new adaptable hydraulic K9 pod is fitted to the 4WD ute for common off-road collections.

Importantly, this system removes the need for Local Laws Officers to manually lift heavy, sometimes aggressive animals into the tray. The vehicle is tailored to our Shire’s environment and also has stock trailer towing capacity.

Building Activity in Golden Plains

From 1 January to 1 December 2018, Council issued 554 building permits including 188 new dwellings; 88 dwelling extensions, including verandahs and decks; 6 dependent person’s units; 46 swimming pools and enclosures; 209 garages, sheds and carports; and 17 commercial permits including child care centre, amenities block and men’s shed.

Legislative requirements included: 66 Council reports and consents; 2 places of public entertainment occupancy permits - Meredith Music Festival and Golden Plains Festival; 1 temporary siting permit - Bluestone Blues Festival; and 482 property information responses. There were also 9 Emergency Orders (4 fire damaged/destroyed dwellings); and 23 Building Notices and Minor Work Orders.

Australia Day Award Nominees

Congratulations to the worthy nominees for the Golden Plains Shire 2019 Australia Day Awards.

Citizen of the Year Award: Troy Broom, Kevin Collister, Brett Cunningham, Una Millar, Anne-Maree Tarbett, Anthony Vanjek and Anthony Walker.

Senior Citizen of the Year Award: Arthur Bottrell and Malcolm Johns.

Young Citizen of the Year Award: Trinity Crawford, Luke Getsom, Christian Meyer, Jesse Pearce, Samantha Watkins and John Thompson.

Community Group of the Year Award: Inverleigh Book Bazaar 2018, Inverleigh Dachshund Derby, Meredith History and Interest Group, and Napoleons Enfield Landcare Group.

Winners will be named at the 2019 Award Presentation event at the Bannockburn Cultural Centre on Tuesday 22 January 2019.

Mecha – Festival of Experimental Art

Tickets are now available for Mecha, a new and unique arts festival showcasing the best of robotic and mechanical sculpture, performance art, sound and video art, on Saturday 19 January in Scarsdale. Sitting somewhere between the traditional worlds of galleries, theatres, and festivals, Mecha is a home for hybrid and experimental artforms not often seen in Australia, and aims to become an annual event.
