2017 Year in Review 2017 marked GRRR’s 21st birthday, a year when we truly
can say that we reached the age of maturity. After pilot programs and an abundance of research, we jumped into
new programs and efforts with both feet.
Our 2016 successes continued, with increases in the number of dogs we served, members, volunteers, donors and donations. We believe all of you are passionate about Golden Retrievers and how GRRR works to serve them.
First and foremost, we determined to always stay true to our mission while we found new ways to reach out to Golden Retrievers in need. While caring for the dogs who were relinquished to us, came in as strays or were transferred from crowded shelters, we also ramped up our education efforts. We worked hard at driving awareness of rescue, letting people know the problems with buying dogs from online sites or irresponsible breeders. We encouraged those who insist on buying to do their homework about what and from whom they are buying a dog. We owe this to all Golden Retrievers and to our loyal supporters.
In 2017, we continued Operation Turkey Dog, bringing in a total of 54 dogs, all of whom have been adopted. Like any other dogs who come to us, they receive all necessary veterinary care and behavioral socialization before being placed in their forever homes. And the program has been self-sufficient, with generous donors covering its costs.
We also expanded our efforts to rescue dogs from puppy mills (or commercial breeders, as they prefer to be called), with a focus on aging female breeder dogs whose futures looked bleak. Most were still young and one turned out to be pregnant. We knew they had many years of happy, healthy lives ahead of them if we could bring them to GRRR. Many needed a lot of human contact and care to overcome fears and be ready for their new lives, but it was well worth the work!
Our fabulous Executive Director, Kevin Shipley and Caregiver, Mary Kenton, along with our wonderful volunteers made all of this possible. It takes more than money to prepare dogs for successful transitions to new homes. We constantly marvel at how many volunteers come to GRRR to do whatever tasks are needed, from dog walking to facility maintenance to thank you card writing and much more.
Our 2017 Gala was once again a huge hit, also thanks to many volunteer hours. We were fortunate to have Yasemin Baban from the Istanbul side of Operation Turkey Dog as our guest speaker. It was an interesting and fun-filled evening which resulted in record donations with nearly $140,000 net profit. Save this year’s date: June 16, 2018. We will have Theresa Strader, Founder and Executive Director National Mill Dog Rescue, as our guest speaker. It promises to be an important and timely talk.
Colorado Gives Day continued to be a critical piece of our overall fundraising effort. We once again exceeded our goal, raising over $106,000 from nearly 400 donors. In addition, many donors of all sizes give to GRRR via ColoradoGives.org throughout the year. We are grateful to The Community First Foundation for providing this safe, convenient philanthropic tool for nonprofit organizations throughout the state.
2018 promises to be another exciting year for GRRR, as we welcome new dogs and new humans. We know that many people are worried about the implications of the new tax law, but we are confident that our supporters are with us for the love of Golden Retrievers, rather than tax deductions. After all, a Golden Retriever Can Change Your Life!
