MEMBER SPOTLIGHT:
The Golden Age Club
Our Golden Age Club is the oldest, continuously operating senior group in
the Greater Trenton area. It was founded in 1953 by the Trenton Chapter of the
National Council of Jewish Women, under the dynamic leadership of Rosalie
Deitz. Together with her committee, plans were made for a club where seniors
could enjoy old friends and meet new ones, learn new skills, and explore ways to
improve retirement conditions.
The first meeting was held in the home of Dr. and Mrs. Benjamin Treiber on
West State Street, approximately on the site of what is now the State Museum. At
that meeting, the group decided to call themselves The Golden Age Club. In the
beginning they met at Radio Station WTTM, then at Adath Israel Synagogue. The
Council of Jewish Women continued to provide the necessary funding and
volunteer leadership.
The Club grew by leaps and bounds and soon a professional social
worker, Rose Movitch was provided to direct the group. Under her direction a
“stop-in” room was opened at the old Y.M.H.A. on Stockton Street. Golden Age
members could stop in for coffee, play cards, read and converse. With Rose as
advisor, the Club drew up a constitution which we are still using, with amendments
over the years.
When the Y became the JCC in a new building in Ewing, the Golden Age
Club became part of the membership, with each member paying dues to the
JCC. The Golden Age Club membership flourished at the Center, reaching over
200 by the time Rose Movitch left to teach at Rutgers. Dedicated volunteers,
headed by the most special Fritzi Goldman, remained until the next professional
director, Marilyn Holtzman, began working with them and enlarged the scope
and programs of Golden Age. Soon there were classes in oil painting, crafts,
history with Prof. Ingenbrandt, fund raisers for social causes, a chorus, a roomful of
card players, day trips as well as extended trips to Miami and Israel. After 16
years, Marilyn left the Center and the Golden Age Club was directed by a series
of part-time professionals: Marilyn Epstein, Dorothy Sandler and Neila Cader.
With the sale of the Ewing building, the Golden Age Club returned to
meet at Adath Israel Synagogue, and was provided guidance by Jewish Family
and Children’s Service through an annual allocation from the Jewish Federation.
On July 1, 2014, the JCC once again took responsibility for the Golden Age Club
as an ongoing program of the Center and its mission to provide meaningful
services to the Jewish community at large. Home again!!!
