By Shenea Brockman

Growing up with a father who struggled with alcoholism and a mother who was unable to get credit in her own

name, Regina Haddock, is no stranger to struggle and can empathize with many of the strains her clients are currently facing. Days and nights were filled with worry due to threats of repossession and utility shut-offs.

Ms. Haddock is the founder and executive director of Dress for Success Quad Cities, an affiliate of the nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of women located in more than 125 cities across 15 countries.

Ms. Haddock, who was a part-time adviser for the Lia Sophia Jewelry company (a major corporate sponsor of Dress for Success), had her aha moment in the fall of 2010 and knew that this program was exactly what was needed in the Quad-Cities. After much hard work and the helping hands of many, she proudly opened the boutique doors in November 2011.

Dress for Success serves clients by referral only, and since opening it has served more than 350 women. “Our clients come to us from over 50 local referral partners including homeless shelters, educational institutions, and domestic-violence shelters, among others,” says Ms. Haddock.

On her initial visit, a woman receives attire and accessories appropriate for the industry in which she is interviewing. After she finds a job, she returns to Dress for Success for additional clothing that can be mixed and matched to make several outfits, providing her with the foundation for a professional wardrobe.

Dress for Success Quad-Cities relies on the financial contributions, in-kind donations and volunteer efforts. You can get involved anytime — especially during the month of September when the organization’s premier fundraising event, One Night One Mission, will be held. (The event is scheduled for Sept. 17-19, see page 18 for more details.)

Visit facebook.com/dfsqc or onenightonemission.org for more information, and to learn how you can get involved.

When it comes to being an engine to distribute wealth, perhaps no local organization does it better than

the Community Foundation of the Great River Bend. The Community Foundation of the Great River Bend, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2014, manages 950 distinct charitable funds, totaling almost $120 million in assets, and serves 17 counties in two states. The foundation has distributed more than $40 million in grants to charitable causes locally and nationwide that reflect the individual passions of more than 10,000 generous donors over the past 50 years.

Sherry Ristau was recently named the foundation’s new president and chief executive officer. She was employed for more than 20 years at Southwest Initiative Foundation, including the last 17 as president/CEO. SWIF’s net assets grew from $23 million to $66 million, which includes over $34 million in the unrestricted endowment, since Ms. Ristau took leadership in 1997. Ms. Ristau also has been a voice for rural philanthropy across the nation while serving on the Council on Foundations and Orton Family Foundation boards.

“I am really excited to meet key business and community leaders in the Quad-Cities area and learn more about the region and explore how the Community Foundation of the Great River Bend can continue to grow as a strong solid organization, leader and partner serving donors and the community,” says Ms. Ristau.

“I am truly looking forward to working with the board and staff and learning about all the assets of the Quad-Cities area and how to become part of an exciting future for the region,” she says. “People are the greatest asset of any region or community, and I can’t wait to get started to build many new relationships.”

Tim Lane is up front and honest; he is only the

wheelman of all that is QC100.

“The best ideas are often stolen,” says Mr. Lane, a Bettendorf-based finan-cial adviser with Edward R. Jones, who with his wife, Carrie, brought QC100 to life locally.

QC100 is an independent and caring group, dedicated to making a significant financial impact through support of local nonprofit and charitable organizations.

“I got the idea from a Des Moines-based group and groups in Michigan, Ohio and Connecticut, just to name a few,” adds Mr. Lane, who lives in Eldridge. “The idea is not new. What’s interesting is the concept you work from and how people of the Quad-Cities have responded. It’s been a wonderful experience.’’

If you were to tag QC100, you would label it a “giving circle,” featuring a floating number of members — all with big hearts — working to better the lives of others. It’s individuals who donate their money collectively to benefit local entities working on behalf of those in need.

Mr. Lane, who serves on a number of local boards and is involved in a variety of local causes, says QC100 meets quarterly at Davenport’s River Music Experience. Each member commits to donating $100 per meeting, or $400 a year. Donations are given directly by the individuals to Quad-Cities area charities or nonprofits. No national foundations or charities will be considered.

“Members nominate a charity for funding,” says Mr. Lane. “They are written out on a piece of paper and blindly drawn from a hat. Three charities are selected from the nominations. At that point the nominator of a selected charity then offers a brief presentation on his or her nominee.

“The group, as a whole, votes by ballot to see which entity receives the funds. Then each member of QC100 makes a direct donation. By pooling our resources we are able to donate thousands of dollars to enable local not-for-profits to continue to do good work,” says Mr. Lane.

The number of participants in QC100 varies from quarter-to-quarter, but the commitment to making life better for others does not. In the past year, more than $20,000 has been donated by the group.

“It goes to show that people can make a difference and want to be involved,” says Mr. Lane.

For more information about QC100, contact Tim Lane at [email protected] or visit facebook.com/qc100.

UNITED WAYDay of Caring

How much can change in just one day? With nearly 2,800 John Deere employees behind it — a lot! That’s the spirit of a Day of Caring.

With single-day events sponsored by the United Way and other organizations globally, John Deere is able to join forces with its home communities and make significant impacts on people’s lives.

“When you have 1,800 John Deere people focusing on doing a project in the community, it’s absolutely amazing the difference it makes to these nonprofit organizations and the cities we live and work in,” says Cheryl Ashcraft, John Deere Foundation Manager, who organized the United Way Day of Caring in the Quad Cities. According to Ms. Ashcraft, it’s such a popular event among employees, United Way needs to add more projects each year.

Across the globe, employee Gaby Stumpf in Mannheim, Germany, noticed a similar reaction among employees who volunteered at a one-day event: building a tree house for kindergartners and painting their school.

“This was the first time our information technology department participated in this kind of event and they talked about it for days after,” she says. “Many people said that it’s great to look back after a long day to all the things we’ve achieved, especially because in the IT world you often do not really see a finished product.”

Almost 300 employees in Pune, India, spent a day working on a variety of projects in their community, including upgrad-ing school infrastructures, park and garden development, agriculture and building wash areas.

“Employees are interested in working with local communities to foster development,” says Arun Pandey, John Deere India Deputy General Manager of Corporate Affairs, who helped organize the event. “They’re eager to contribute their time to benefit our communities and support John Deere’s commitment to those linked to the land.”

In Des Moines, 225 John Deere volunteers supported three programs during the United Way Day of Action: Read. Learn. Succeed, which is co-sponsored by John Deere; Dressers for Kids; and Camp Hantesa cleanup.

“We can count on John Deere to jump in and give back whenever we have a need,” says Scott Valbert, Corporate Relations Manager at the United Way of Central Iowa. “Typically, we have 10 projects and only four of them get done, but with John Deere volunteering, we always accomplish more than the 10 projects.”

Making a difference in their communities is just one more way John Deere employees are a POWER FOR GOOD.

1. John Deere employees from Mannheim, Germany, volunteer to restore a treehouse at a local kindergarten. 2. John Deere financial volunteers in Des Moines read to third-grade students as part of their annual “Day of Action.” 3. Some 1,800 Quad-Cities Deere employees take a day off work to improve their community. 4. John Deere facilities engineers team up to design and build an educational kiosk for a nature center in Cedar Falls. 5. Nearly 300 John Deere India employees celebrate their first-ever day of volunteerism in Pune, India. 6. Deere employees help clean up a pond during the National Mall Day of Service in Washington, D.C.

Recall a winter during childhood where you

were all bundled up in a warm winter coat, snow pants, hat, mittens and boots. Those magical days bring to mind playing in the snow, sledding and returning home to a cup of warm cocoa.

These pleasant memories are ones that we cherish and that every child should enjoy. However, in the Quad-Cities and Eastern Iowa region, many children do not enjoy these same privileges. There are several schools in our region where 80 percent of the students do not have winter coats! This is true in school districts that one would imagine that this situation would never occur. The reality of these hard economic times is that our children suffer from having their basic needs go unmet.

Rotary District 6000 has come to the rescue, delivering 8,808 coats to area school districts.

“Rotary functions behind the scenes serving many underserved individuals in our community through a variety of programs. We are thrilled to be able to help our community and its children by providing them warm coats,” says Iowa Quad Cities Rotary’s Operation Warm Chair Dr. Lisa Arndt.

Rotary is an international organization of professionals whose members strive to promote peace, fight disease, provide clean water, save mothers and children, and support education while growing local economies. Rotary’s four-way test challenges members through their lives and works to be truthful, fair to all concerned, build goodwill and better friendships, and promote programs that will be beneficial to all concerned.

By Tia Watson

Since the time John Deere served as mayor in his adopted hometown of Moline

from 1873-1875, the company he founded has been known as a good corporate citizen.

Today, the company and John Deere Foundation continue to be a good citizen, having invested nearly $32 million across the globe in 2014 in an effort to improve living standards for people everywhere.

“We bring to life our higher purpose through citizenship activities in two com-plementary ways,” says Nate Clark, John Deere Foundation Vice President. “First, we invest in programs and partners that work to solve world hunger, empower others through education, and develop economic opportunities in our home communities. Second, by leveraging the enormous and diverse talents of John

Deere employee volunteers, we mag-nify the spirit, impact and durability of these investments.”

Through John Deere’s global employee volunteerism initiative, employees are encouraged to take paid time off to give back to society and enrich the quality of life in their communities. According to Global Volunteerism Manager Deb Wirth, the initiative benefits the employee and company, as well as the community. “The processes, project-management skills and the global perspective we inherently possess as Deere employees can be invaluable to small businesses and non-profits,” she notes.

As for the employee, Ms. Wirth says studies have shown those who volunteer feel better, both physically and emotion-ally, and have lower stress levels. “I also

believe that employees feel a deeper con-nection to the company when they vol-unteer in the community,” she said. “They take great pride in representing John Deere and building our brand.”

Across the U.S., where employees have access to reporting their volunteer work, some 82,000 hours were recorded in 2014, benefiting more than 750 nonprofit organizations. Employee volunteers are also active in Brazil, India, China and Canada.

First-time Deere volunteer Trevis Worley painted picnic tables with co-workers at the 2014 Quad Cities Day of Caring and is hooked. “This project was very rewarding as it showed me how a little hard work can improve the community we live in. If we all step back and look at the bigger picture by volunteering in our communities, we can make a difference.”

Deere volunteers aim to be ‘power for good’

John Deere employees across the U.S., including these in Cary, North Carolina, commemorated World Food Day by packaging meals for local food banks. (Submitted)

Join Us... 100 Years -100 Cellos

Please contact QCSO Development Director Steve Mohr at 563-424-7735or VfS VP Linda Holmberg at 563-370-1004 for more information.

Volunteers for Symphony (VfS) is launching an exciting project to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Quad City Symphony Orchestra (QCSO)!

We will be placing 100 painted cellos throughout theQuad City community in recognition of our historic season.

Why painted cellos? We’re celebrating world-renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma performing with the QCSO on May 14, 2015.

Join us by sponsoring a cello:For $1,000 the sponsor selects the artist or organization to paint the cello, and the location where the cello is displayed. The sponsor’s name will be featured on a card attached to the cello and will be recognized in the Yo-Yo Ma concert program.

There also will be a 100th Anniversary celebration held at the Figge Art Museum on May 29, 2015, where all 100 cellos will be displayed together and our sponsors will be recognized!

All cello sponsorship money goes to support the QCSO Music Education Programs and is tax deductible.
