The purpose of this installation was to further evaluate the elevated volatile organic compound (VOC) levels reported in bedrock well MW-309-2. As part of this additional work, we also reaampled a number of previously installed wells and further evaluated the hydraulic conductivity of the cement-bentonite grout aixture used as an annular seal for our well installations. FIELD ACTIVITIES GZA Drilling, Inc. installed the new bedrock well (designated MW-309-3) approximately 10 teet south of MW-309 between January 31 and February 10, 1989. Drilling and installation aethoda were designed to preclude the potential tor cross contamination of deep soil and rock strata. Flush joint casing was driven to advance the hole and a bentonite baaed drilling mud was used to flush cuttings from the hole. Drill casing was seated on bedrock at 105 teet below ground surface and the hole was then flushed with clean tap water. The bedrock was core- drilled to a depth of 15 teet (total depth of 120 teet below ground surface) with a 4-inch diameter double tube core barrel. Ten teet ot 2-inch diameter PVC well screen was installed in the base ot the core hole and a silica sand filter placed around the screen. The annular apace above the filter pack was backfilled with coapacted bentonite pellets, high solids bentonite grout, and nonahrink ceaent grout. We al8o directly evaluated the hydraulic conductivity of the cement bentonite grout in a laboratory permeameter A cement bentonite rout replicating our field mixture was prepared in a cylinder Groundwater from the moat highly contaminated portionof the site (Well MW-4058) ia being permeated through the groutsample in an ongoing evaluation of grout performance

our field program al8o included an evaluation of the possible presence of dense non-aqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) in moat of the aonitoring wells within and immediately north of the Silresim site Tranaparent PVC bottom check valve bailers were slowlylowered to the bottoa of each well then retrieved and observed for DNAPL DNAPL was observed in four of the 18 wells evaluated at thicknesses between 0 1 and 2 5 feet DNAPL survey reault s are auaariaed on Table 1 Approximately 6 inches of DNAPL was observed in well KW-309-3 upon completion of drilling operations

Results froa the newly installed bedrock well (MW-309-3)C)enerally correlate with recent data from MW-309-2 confirmingthe elevated voc levels in bedrock in this area Evaluation of peraeability t tin results on the qrout sample and pHspecificconductance screening resultbull do not indicate aeasurable deterioration of ceaent bentonite grout seals to date Baaed on these reaulta ve believe that the int8C)rity of the existing weU eala t the ait baa not n eo pro ia

Observations of significant quantities of DNAPL in well MW-4058 and the MW-309 cluster suggest that this material is the source of the elevated VOC levels in bedrock The bedrock elevation at well MW-309 is the lowest rock surface elevation measured within the study area Additionally a localized low point in the surface of the silty sandsandy silt unit which underlies the Silresim site appears to occur in the general area of well 309 These conditions suggest that the zone between wells 405 and 309 is a likely area for DNAPL to accumulate The absence of measurable quantities of DNAPL in other wells at the site mayindicate that significant quantities of this material are limited to the 405309 area1 the presence of isolated pockets of DNAPL in other portions of the site cannot be precluded however

This newly acquired data is being incorporated into the revised draft RI report Within that report we will present an assessment of the affects of DNAPL on contaminant migration at the Silresim site our previous evaluations of contaminant transport had assumed a continuous source of contamination at the site in simulating long-term pollutant migration Given this worst case assumption we presently believe that the new findingswill not dramatically altar our conclusions regarding migrationand potential impacts of groundwater contamination at the site While it is our opinion that sufficient data is available to proceed with the Feasibility study we recognize the need for additional study to evaluate potential collection and treatment options tor DNAPL recovery

was directed at further evaluating VOC levels in bedrock monitoring walla and deeper overburden wells at the site Specific conductance and pH screening were used to evaluate the integrity of cement-bentonite grout seals in previously installed walla

We al8o directly evaluated the hydraulic conductivity of the cement bentonite grout in a laboratory permeameter A cement bentonite rout replicating our field mixture was prepared in a cylinder Groundwater from the moat highly contaminated portionof the site (Well MW-4058) ia being permeated through the groutsample in an ongoing evaluation of grout performance

our field program al8o included an evaluation of the possible presence of dense non-aqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) in moat of the aonitoring wells within and immediately north of the Silresim site Tranaparent PVC bottom check valve bailers were slowlylowered to the bottoa of each well then retrieved and observed for DNAPL DNAPL was observed in four of the 18 wells evaluated at thicknesses between 0 1 and 2 5 feet DNAPL survey reault s are auaariaed on Table 1 Approximately 6 inches of DNAPL was observed in well KW-309-3 upon completion of drilling operations

Results froa the newly installed bedrock well (MW-309-3)C)enerally correlate with recent data from MW-309-2 confirmingthe elevated voc levels in bedrock in this area Evaluation of peraeability t tin results on the qrout sample and pHspecificconductance screening resultbull do not indicate aeasurable deterioration of ceaent bentonite grout seals to date Baaed on these reaulta ve believe that the int8C)rity of the existing weU eala t the ait baa not n eo pro ia

Observations of significant quantities of DNAPL in well MW-4058 and the MW-309 cluster suggest that this material is the source of the elevated VOC levels in bedrock The bedrock elevation at well MW-309 is the lowest rock surface elevation measured within the study area Additionally a localized low point in the surface of the silty sandsandy silt unit which underlies the Silresim site appears to occur in the general area of well 309 These conditions suggest that the zone between wells 405 and 309 is a likely area for DNAPL to accumulate The absence of measurable quantities of DNAPL in other wells at the site mayindicate that significant quantities of this material are limited to the 405309 area1 the presence of isolated pockets of DNAPL in other portions of the site cannot be precluded however

This newly acquired data is being incorporated into the revised draft RI report Within that report we will present an assessment of the affects of DNAPL on contaminant migration at the Silresim site our previous evaluations of contaminant transport had assumed a continuous source of contamination at the site in simulating long-term pollutant migration Given this worst case assumption we presently believe that the new findingswill not dramatically altar our conclusions regarding migrationand potential impacts of groundwater contamination at the site While it is our opinion that sufficient data is available to proceed with the Feasibility study we recognize the need for additional study to evaluate potential collection and treatment options tor DNAPL recovery

Observations of significant quantities of DNAPL in well MW-4058 and the MW-309 cluster suggest that this material is the source of the elevated VOC levels in bedrock The bedrock elevation at well MW-309 is the lowest rock surface elevation measured within the study area Additionally a localized low point in the surface of the silty sandsandy silt unit which underlies the Silresim site appears to occur in the general area of well 309 These conditions suggest that the zone between wells 405 and 309 is a likely area for DNAPL to accumulate The absence of measurable quantities of DNAPL in other wells at the site mayindicate that significant quantities of this material are limited to the 405309 area1 the presence of isolated pockets of DNAPL in other portions of the site cannot be precluded however

This newly acquired data is being incorporated into the revised draft RI report Within that report we will present an assessment of the affects of DNAPL on contaminant migration at the Silresim site our previous evaluations of contaminant transport had assumed a continuous source of contamination at the site in simulating long-term pollutant migration Given this worst case assumption we presently believe that the new findingswill not dramatically altar our conclusions regarding migrationand potential impacts of groundwater contamination at the site While it is our opinion that sufficient data is available to proceed with the Feasibility study we recognize the need for additional study to evaluate potential collection and treatment options tor DNAPL recovery
