CONGRATUALATIONS!

Chapter C in Baytown hosted the Horizon Program. Annette Lockler, thank you for

all you did to make this weekend work. Thank you also to the Deer Park Masonic

Lodge 1362 for a great place to meet and to Dennis Cude from Chapter C. Dennis

arrived each morning smiling and made sure we had all the coffee and soft drinks

we needed

The weekend would not have been a success without those who participated;

Alvalin & Jim Woodul TX-T. Annette Lockler, Brenda & Roy Badgett, Charles Lyons

TX-C. Paula & Rick Dickson, Kathleen & Richard Hipp TX-S2. Billie & Steve Fleming

TX-N2. Ricky Martinez TX-V2. Ken Robbins and Greg Johnstone TX-Z.

We had a great time, moved out of our comfort zones and thought out of the box,

way out side the box. I’ll let the Chapters post those pictures.

From the District Director

Fred Mew

I don’t know if it’s because I’m getting older, or if I was just full throttle busy all month, but

would someone please tell me where February went? I usually dread the shortest month of

the year… which seems like the longest month of the year. February had all the ―promises‖

the month has to offer, and I hope everyone was fortunate enough to survive the winter events

we have all come to endure.

Now it’s time that we can get our bikes back on the road… well most of the month anyway.

March does bring us the opportunities we’ve been ―chomping at the bit‖ for and I hope eve-

ryone spends the time needed to prepare their rides for the season. Whether you take it to a

dealer or maintain it yourself, just ―get er’ done.‖

We are fortunate that we have Region H rally in north central Texas this year on March 24-28

to get everyone started in ―RALLY MODE!‖ The facilities in Plano this year are fantastic and

the region team put together a pretty attractive and busy event schedule. There were still a

few rooms available at the Southfork Hotel for a great price that includes a full buffet, all you

can eat, genuine pig-out breakfast. See page 20 for more information on the talent show and

returning this year…pine car races. See the region website for the full rally information and

schedule at www. gwrra-h.org

Last… and most important!!! What I don’t want is anyone to

miss the Couple of the Year Selection event on Friday! Mandy

and I are really partial to this program and personally invite

EVERYONE from Texas to support Dave and Jean Simmons

as they continue their journey in the hunt for the beloved belt

buckle! Mandy and I know firsthand from the support we re-

ceived… first from our chapter, then Texas district. It really

made a tremendous difference in the way we felt when we

were ―in the spotlight‖ just knowing our all friends were there

for us. Dave and Jean have really done a great job as the

Texas Couple of the Year and we applaud all their efforts and

journeys representing all of us in Texas. Let’s really show

them our support on Friday!!!

Have fun, ride safe,

TEXAS DISTRICT NEWS MARCH 2011

Good day, fellow Wingers. Yes, January and February were defi-

nitely unusual months for our great state of Texas, as was the

weather in other areas of the country. Having experienced some

unusually abnormal temperatures let’s focus on some basics of mo-

torcycling and look at Texas District’s Rider Education’s fundraiser

for 2011.

Arguably the weather is definitely drifting towards motorcycle rid-

ing weather. Those persons with PMS (parked motorcycle syndrome), can now ―start their engines‖ and

enjoy some terrific sights, along with comfortable riding weather; but not without performing some basic,

fundamental safety checks of the motorcycle, along with re-educating one on the basic maneuverability

skills.

Are you aware that single vehicle motorcycle crashes accounts for 45% of all motorcycle fatalities. Are

you aware motorcycle fatalities were at an all time low in 1996 (937) and replicated in 1997. Unfortunately

from 1997 to 1999 there was an increase of 21.7% in motorcycle fatalities.

What caused the increase? According the NHTSA DOT HS 908 360, the following was hypothesized.

Report Conclusions: Findings from the FARS (Fatality Analysis Reporting System) data illustrate possible

reasons for motorcyclist fatalities in single vehicle motorcycle crashes:

Helmet use among fatally injured motorcyclists below 50 percent

More motorcyclist fatalities are occurring on rural roads

High blood alcohol levels are a major problem among motorcycle operators

Half of the fatalities are related to negotiating a curve prior to the crash

Over 80 percent of the fatalities occur off roadway

Undivided roadways account for a majority of the fatalities

Almost two thirds of the fatalities were associated with speeding as an operator

contributing factor in the crash

Almost 60 percent of motorcyclist fatalities occur at night

Collision with a fixed object is a significant factor in over half of the fatalities

Braking and steering maneuvers possibly contribute for almost 25 percent of

the fatalities

More riders age 40 and over are getting killed

Almost one third of the fatally injured operators did not have a proper license

1998 Motorcycle Facts:

2,284 motorcyclists died and approximately

49,000 were injured in highway crashes in

the United States.

Per mile traveled in 1998, a motorcyclist is ap-

proximately 16 times more likely to die in a

crash than an automobile occupant. And 3x

(times) as likely to be injured.

Head injury is a leading cause of death in motorcycle crashes.

In 1998, 46% of fatally injured motorcycle drivers were not wearing helmets at the time

of the crash.

NHTSA estimates that motorcycle helmets reduce the likelihood of a fatality by 29% in a

crash.

In 1998, 41% of all motorcycle drivers involved in fatal crashes were speeding.

Nearly one out of five motorcycle drivers (18%) involved in fatal crashes in 1998 was

operating with an invalid license at the time of the collision.

Motorcycle drivers involved in fatal crashes in 1998 had higher intoxication rates than

any other type of motor vehicle driver at 31%.

In 1998, 500 motorcyclists’ lives were saved due to helmet usage; 307 could have been

saved.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration

Remember, motorcycle riding is not easy. It requires a level of skill and confidence to focus on executing

the required maneuverability exercises to ensure safe turns, cornering, acceleration, stopping, etc. In fact,

the ―Hurt Study‖ reinforces the fundamental skills were the skill areas that needed focus from an execution

perspective. Being prepared for the events that occur is just as important as being able to execute the nec-

essary maneuver.

In order to survive and avoid a dreaded incident, one needs to be prepared by developing an awareness of

what happens on the street and most importantly, what could happen. The primary precept for survival isn’t

one’s training, practice, and inherent physical skills, it’s one’s ability to perceive and predict. Mental skills

and strategies will continue to keep one in the realm of the active riders.

The MSF curriculum teaches that 90 percent of successful, enjoyable motorcycling is mental. The ability to

process information will allow one to be in the right position, at the right time, which is also absolutely criti-

cal. One’s vision must be acute and capable, without limitations or impairment.

What does this information mean…before you mount your motorcycle for another season of enjoyment be

sure and review the MOM (motorcycle owners manual), to ensure tire inflation, change the oil, check all

fluid levels, and then spend 30 to 60 minutes on a parking lot, with no one but you and the motorcycle to re-

acquaint oneself with the skills truly needed to be developed and honed to perfection.

(Continued on page 6)

Page 6: GOLD WING ROAD RIDERS ASSOCIATION TEXAS … · GOLD WING ROAD RIDERS ASSOCIATION MARCH 2011 ... I don’t know if it’s because I’m getting older, ... to ensure tire inflation,

Yes, one does need good riding skills and it is critical to have the

self-confidence to execute instinctively, which comes from prac-

tice…yes, practice.

The January 2011 Officer Certification Program was well attended with 50 participants.

Congratulations to you all on your OCP Certification. A big thank you to my fellow

Trainers; Gail & Jerry Carr and Mark Heene for a job well done.

We had great debate and lively discussions. You posed excellent questions and made

some requests and suggestions. We have gotten a response to some of those:

Alcohol Policy - clarification from GWRRA Director Mike Stiger:

Editor’s Note: Mike Stiger clarified the GWRRA policy as outlined below. This newsletter has been

modified as of Monday, March 7, 2011. Please ignore any earlier versions that may be circulated.

―Our policy is very simple. Our policy doesn’t infringe on the personal freedom of choice than an

individual has. Due to liability, Officers of GWRRA are not to sell, give as gift, advertise the use of, or per-

sonally provide alcohol beverages at any GWRRA event. However, this doesn’t prevent a member from

bringing adult beverages to the event or purchasing them at the facilities where the event is being held if

the facility sells alcohol.

The only exception I can think of is if the facility where the event is being held prohibits alcohol or it

is being held at a private residence and the owner doesn’t want alcohol on their property. They have the

right to request of those that will be attending not to bring any alcohol. They are the owners of their prop-

erty and they too have the personal freedom of choice to request that.

When attending GWRRA events, members are to drink responsibly. If a member becomes intoxi-

cated and becomes belligerent, they should be provided a safe mode of transportation home and asked to

leave. It is all of our responsibility to help ensure that they don’t drink and drive.‖

Question - would be possible to offer a short general 1/2 day Leadership Training session for Chapter Offi-

cers with small chapters to cover items tailored to leading within a smaller chapter? Response from the Re-

gion H Director:

Not a significant difference between large and small chapters. Officers should be encouraged to

grow the Chapter rather than being satisfied with the status quo. Recruitment is great in almost all areas of

the Association. Not all small chapters have the population to draw from, however most do.

At this time there is no Leadership Training Seminar to address this issue and a seminar on this sub-

ject would need to come from and be sanctioned by National, we are not at liberty to present anything not

already in the curriculum.

Question - Officer use of marks relative to using a vendor for Chapter apparel where vendors make a profit

and but the Chapter does not. Clarification from the Director of GWRRA;

Chapter can use the marks like the logo or put GWRRA on chapter apparel for their own use, no li-

cense fee is required. The main issue is where a commercial printer uses our marks for their purposes to

sell products. They need to pay for the use. Hypothetically, if the vendor the Chapter uses goes behind

their back and creates products with GWRRA marks for their own resale beyond the agreement with the

Chapter, then the Home Office would hold the vendor liable for the license fee not the Chapter.

Question – where is GWRRA Charter published allowing for reading by the Member-

ship? Response from Int’l Deputy Director Dave Carter:

Visit the Officer Connection web site that can be accessed from the Nat’l web

site. Once you locate the Officer Connection look for Officer Resources then specifically

two items #1 the IRS Letter #2 Articles of Incorporation.

Membership Enhancement

Dress Competitions

At MWRU, we announced that we would not have Dress Competitions; however,

after much member feedback, we have amended that policy. We are NOT having

a Parade or Riding Dress Competition this year as there has not been much par-

ticipation or enthusiasm in those categories. We WILL have a Theme Dress Com-

petition (both chapter and couple) that will be held during the Dance/Talent Show

on Friday night. On Saturday, we will have Chapter Dress Shirt

(shirts with collars) and Chapter Tee-shirt (shirts with no collars)

Competitions. Chapters can enter each category only one time.

There is no minimum or maximum number of people who can rep-

resent the chapter. There will not be Couple Shirt/Dress Compe-

titions.

Chapter Competitions

We ARE having the Chapter Competitions as usual. The express

guidelines will be in next month’s newsletter and look for those on

our website as well in a few weeks. We will have the Chapter news-

letters, scrapbooks, banners, jackets, windshield covers and mascots.

Couple of the Year Baskets

Another change is coming in the Couple Basket projects. We have limited the

size of the ―basket‖ (container) for this event since everyone has been so enthusi-

astic about the baskets. We don’t want to crush your zeal for the event, just be

more creative in how you put items together, maybe using coupons, gift cards,

certificates, etc. instead of the actual item you have put in the basket. Items may

include shipping costs or delivery costs. Also, we are NOT putting the

actual costs of the items in the baskets, just a listing of the items. These

decisions were made after suggestions from the membership during

the MEP session at MWRU. Again, more info will follow next month

about sizes and recommendations.

Hero Hat Decoration Display

The last thing I will mention this time is the HERO HAT DECORATION DIS-

PLAY. Each chapter is to decide on a type of hat to represent their chap-

ter HERO, decorate it and bring it to the TX District Convention in May.

This is the same as we have done with the Stars, Boots, Life rings, etc. in

the past. Use your imagination and creativity to bring something spectacular.

Prizes will be awarded.

That is all for now, stay tuned for further updates and info………………….

Texas District Couple of the Year

We will be representing the Texas District when we participate in the Region H Couple of the

Year Selection Process in Plano this month. We would appreciate the ―moral support‖ of all

Texas District Members. Of course, you won’t be able to vote…..that privilege is reserved for

the judges appointed by the Region H Staff. But you just being there….and letting us know that

―Texas is in the house‖ will mean a lot to us.

Whether or not we are selected to represent Region H, we want all of Texas to know how much

we have enjoyed representing you as the 2010-2011 Couple of the Year. We’ve enjoyed visiting

with old friends and making new friends everywhere we have gone. Of course, we are not leav-

ing you yet...our ―tour of duty‖ will not end until May 13 in Killeen. That is when a new Texas

District Couple of the Year will be selected.

And speaking of that, we would like to encourage all 2010 Chapter Couples of the Year to at

least consider participating in the District selection process. Not only for yourselves, but think of

how proud of you your chapter would be. You will find the necessary forms to complete your

resume on the GWRRA website. The completed resume must be received by us no later than

April 1st. Please contact us at: [email protected] or 325-382-4469 if you have any

questions. Chapter Directors, you might want to visit with your Chapter’s 2010 Couple and as-

sure them of your support if they choose to participate.

And for those 2010 Chapter Couples who decide not to participate in the selection process at the

District Level, won’t you please consider attending the program at our District Convention in

Killeen to show support of the Couples who are participating?

GOLD WING ROAD RIDERS ASSOCIATION ANNOUNCES “PASSPORT PROGRAM”

Phoenix, AZ – Gold Wing Road Riders Association (GWRRA) has announced a new program, called

the ―Passport Program.‖ The Program is geared to encourage the Members of GWRRA to ride more -

mainly to GWRRA Chapter gatherings, events, rallies, their Honda Dealers, vendors, etc. The Pro-

gram will Kick off officially in March, but is being announced now to encourage sponsorships of this

Program.

Paul Hildebrand, Founder and COB of GWRRA, said, ―This program will encourage more riding with

our Members and also provide a vehicle for more camaraderie by having Members and providers

getting together to sign/stamp their ―Passports‖ and compare their travels!‖

The Passport books have 64 pages, with 4 spaces on each page, for Members to get stamps/initials

for each place they visit. GWRRA will be providing a special website for those Members who fill their

Passports and send them into the GWRRA Home Office.

To capture those special travel moments, use this Passport when you go to GWRRA Events or Wing

Ding. At each Event or Wing Ding (at any GWRRA booth), the Chapter Director, District Director or

Region Director will apply a special stamp or initials (one per event) to recognize your attendance.

After completing the entire Passport, send it to the Home Office by December 31, 2011, for a chance

to win a prize. The winners will be chosen randomly from all entrants.

Mr. Hildebrand goes on to state that ―I am looking forward to seeing this Program bring riding and

camaraderie back to the forefront of GWRRA!‖ GWRRA will support this Program through editorials

in Wing World magazine; our FREE monthly e-Newsletter, Wingin’ It; and electronic media through

our websites.

Founded in 1977, the Gold Wing Road Riders Association is the largest single marquee motorcycle organization in

the world, with 72,000 Members in 52 countries. Our motto is “Friends for FUN, Safety and Knowledge.” The Home

Office is at 21423 North 11th Avenue, Phoenix, AZ 85027, the phone number is 800-843-9460 or 623-581-2500 and

the website is www.gwrra.org.

GWRRA would like to announce that due to some great suggestions by our Members,

we are changing the deadline date of the Passport Program from 12/31/11 to the new

date of July 31, 2012. You now have extra time to fill your Passport Book and either

drop it off at WD 34 or send it in to the Home Office to be eligible for the drawing for

prizes. See our homepage at http://www.gwrra.org/ for more details.
