Greg GarrettTehachapi City Manager One of the benefits of being City Manager is interaction with the public and more importantly with the local organizations that support our City with their work and services to the residents. One of those groups is the Tehachapi Senior Center, an organization that provides a multitude of services to our senior citizen community. Through a part- nership with the City of Tehachapi they operate the Senior Center located at 500 East ‘F’ Street. The first Wednesday at Noon every month they have a board meet-ing that’s open to the public. This is where the important business is conducted, it includes setting the menu for their monthly social and fundraising dinner and plenty of time for good-natured rib-bing and fun. I’ll be honest, of the many board meetings I attend, this is one of the most entertaining and encouraging meetings I have the pleasure of being at. This group is so involved in the se-nior center operations, the health of their members and providing services to the community; it’s refreshing for sure.Lewis Brown serves as the President and is involved in every-thing around the center. Nobody lives there but sometimes I don’t think he actually goes home, there always seems to be a project Mr. Brown is working on to make the center even better. The City contributes as well with maintenance of the facility and sometimes purchasing new equipment for their kitchen when needed. There’s a great board of directors behind Mr. Brown including Vice President Gwladys Peterson, Treasurer Judith Kennedy, Secre-tary Maggie Keeler, Directors Sally Errecart, Louise O’Donnell, Carolyn Scott, Nathan Walton, Vicki Tones, Sandie Shultis and alternates Kaelene Swanson and Linda Morgan. Patty Scott is the office manager at the Senior Center and can be reached at 822-6255 Monday-Friday from 10am-2pm.I can’t say enough about the offerings this group helps facilitate. There are daily activities Monday through Friday at the center which include dominoes, line dancing, yoga, cards and other classes. Additionally there is lunch served daily in partnership with the Kern County Aging and Adult Services department. The suggested donation is $3 for those over 60 years of age and $6 for those under 60. They ask that a reservation be made by calling 822-6255 so they can ensure they have enough food for everyone. As I mentioned earlier there is a monthly fundraising dinner held on the third Friday evening of every month. This meal gets a lot of special attention by the board of directors who consider every detail and combination of food for the attendees to make sure it’s the best meal possible. This month’s menu includes corned beef and cabbage and will be held on March 20th at 5 P.M. Dinner is $10 per person and reservations are required as well. There are plenty of other resources available at the center includ-ing the monthly “Scoop” newsletter that includes articles for seniors, daily menus, activities, recipes and businesses that offer senior discounts and coupons. It’s all put together by the staff under editor Gene Dallachie with the intent of providing the help seniors need, again it’s an encouraging endeavor put together by these wonderful people. As with all of our community organizations I can’t thank them enough for their help, support and companionship they provide the City and one another. This is a great organization that I would encourage you to either support with donations, or participate in if you are a senior citizen yourself. I’m pretty sure you’ll be happy by doing either.

Authentic German Bakery with Old-World CharmKohnen’s Country BakeryKohnen’s Country Bakery has been Tehachapi’s most popular local and tourist spot since they first opened their doors in 2004. Thomas and Colleen Kohnen began their bakery business first in Ojai, CA when they took over operation of the land-mark Bill Baker bakery in 1989, just a few months after they were married. After operating Bill Baker successfully for nearly 15 years, they were forced to vacate their historic bakery when the building was sold. An Ojai neighbor’s suggestion lured them to Tehachapi. They were thrilled to discover better housing prices, a friendly community just right for raising their two children, and an old potato pack-inghouse and antique shed in desperate need of renovation. The decision was an easy one. After a few months of renovation, they opened a new contemporary German bakery designed with Old-World charm – Kohnen’s Country Bakery.Thomas Kohnen, originally from Bottrop, West Germany, has been creating delicious breads and pastries since 1977, when he started his apprenticeship as a Konditor (Confectionist) at the Franz Bergendahl Bacherrei, the biggest bakery in town, at the age of 15. After a short military service with the German Navy, he returned to working at Franz Bergendahl, where he was offered the opportunity to go on a training program in the United States. At age 22 he left his hometown and began his training in Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties. During that time, he met Colleen, a native California girl, who became his wife in October of 1988.Honoring his German food traditions Thomas makes every batch from scratch – including some 20 varieties of arti-san breads dense with whole grains, full flavors, and crisp crusts. Kohnen’s offers fresh bread baked daily, including crusty rye, basil-barley garden, six-grain, sun dried tomato, delicate cinnamon raisin, and even pizza bread, not to mention pretzels, boiled-then-baked bagels and Brötchen – traditional, crusty German breakfast rolls.Desserts are gorgeous and irresistible, too. A few temptations are cinnamon crisps, cream puffs and espresso chocolate chip cookies. The cafe also serves fresh-made soups and sandwiches using Kohnen’s breads for take-out, dining inside or on their expansive patio overlooking the Boulevard.Be sure to stop into Kohnen’s Country Bakery today for breakfast, lunch, a refreshing soda or iced tea, or a delicious dessert pastry.

GREATER TEHACHAPI CHAMBER OF COMMERCE CHAIRMAN'S CIRCLE

The Greater Tehachapi Chamber of Commerce is offering an opportunity for our members to enjoy more recognition, visibility and opportunities through our Chairman's Circle. The Chairman’s Circle offers a number of ways to market, advertise and promote your company on a regular consistent basis.

The Chairman’s Circle offers four specific packages ranging from $1000 to $7000. It is the Chamber's goal to help you develop an annual package of benefits that will raise the visibility of your company in the community. By strategically plan- ning your marketing and advertising activities in these areas, you can develop an individual campaign that will deliver bottom line benefits.

Chairman’s Circle members enjoy the convenience of a one-time all-inclusive transaction that insures representation at Chamber events, in its publications and on the Chamber’s website. This is a wonderful way to plan your budget each year. The Chairman’s Circle will not only let you plan for your sponsorships of annual events, but will also avoid those many calls individuals receive to gather support for the Chamber’s many great events.

Feel free to contact me with any questions regarding the Chairman’s Circle. I invite you to arrange a visit to discuss the benefits and privileges of membership in this special group of members who have made an annual commitment to support the Greater Tehachapi Chamber of Commerce through sponsorships and marketing opportunities. I look forward to working with you on a program to enhance your company’s recognition and visibility in our community.

Employers’ Election Day ResponsibilitiesFebruary 19, 2020 - CalChamber HRWatchDog

The 2020 California Primary Election is Tuesday, March 3; polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Employers need to be aware of their voting leave obligations, which start prior to election day, and the correct way to share political company views with their employees.Employees may take time off to vote in the election (although California’s new Voter’s Choice Act may make it extremely difficult for employees to justify that they do not have time outside of working hours to cast a ballot). You also cannot discipline an employee who serves as an election official for their absence, but you’re not required to pay these employees for the time off.Additionally, all employers, regardless of size, must display a poster describing voting leave requirements at least 10 days before every statewide election.CalChamber’s convenient all-in-one California and Federal Employment Notices Poster which is available at the Greater Tehachapi Chamber of Commerce contains all required California and federal notices, including the Time Off to Vote notice. Finally, employers are within their rights to communicate with employees about issues, regulations, legislation or ballot mea-sures that will have an impact on the workplace, jobs, the economy and the employees themselves. But employers may not take certain actions, such as no paycheck stuffers, no coercion and no rewarding or punishing employ-ees (or threatening to do so) for their political activities or beliefs.CalChamber prepared this brochure to provide more guidelines for employers on political communications to employees. Note the distinction between internal communications (to employees, stockholders and their families) and communications to external audiences (such as non-stockholder retirees, outside vendors, customers or passersby).
