Activities

The Happy Wanderers Hiking Group

This contingent of the Gold Country German-American Club is the most popular for many reasons: For the cost of yearly club dues, you get free guided hikes from Fred and Karen Herrmann, who know all the good trails in Nevada County and neighboring counties. In addition to that, Fred is a horticulturalist who can identify many of the wildflowers seen on the hikes. It's great exercise with congenial companions. The hikes take place on Thursday, usually from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. If you're a 9-5 M-F worker, consider taking a Thursday off to join the Happy Wanderers. It will be good for your body and your soul. One of many hiking venues, Malakoff Diggins

News Item: German Beer No Longer BekömmlichIn Germany in 2015, the Social Competition Association applied for an injunction against the Leutkircher brewery, after it used the word bekömmlich (wholesome) in its advertising. In May of 2018, the German Federal High Court (BGH) ruled that breweries were not allowed to describe their beers in terms that portray them as having health benefits. Another rationale for drinking German beer, shattered!

Charlotte Starn was born Charlotte Van Kirk on May 5, 1944, in Trenton, New Jersey. She was the second of five children of Clifford and Sophie Van Kirk. Her father was a civilian employee of the Air Force so the family traveled a lot. Charlotte finished high school in Morocco and the family moved to Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. After several jobs she enrolled in Wayne State University in Detroit where she graduated with a B.A. She worked her way through Wayne State sewing costumes for the graduate school of drama. She was married for a time to Lewis Lemberger and after they were divorced he helped her build her house in Pilot Hill in accordance with their agreement. She worked as an artist in the advertising department of the Sacramento Union. She was married to Larry Starn in 1993 and later worked for the Employment Department in the map-making GIS Division. In 2006 she and Larry retired and began a series of travel adventure tours which included India, Egypt, Ecuador, Peru, Costa Rica, Panama, Mexico, Guatemala and one survey trip to Chile, Argentina and Brazil. She loved painting, especially watercolors, and hiking and nature in general. She is survived by her husband, Larry, brothers John and Dutch, sisters Gloria and Elizabeth and Nieces Sara and Natalie.

From the daughter of Edeltrud Gower: Memorial Service for Edeltrud Gower is June 9th at 1 p.m. at New Elm Ridge Cemetery on Kidder Ave.,

Grass Valley. It will be a small memorial service that many of our members will want to attend.

The musical instrument at left is a Tenor Horn. Tenor horns are prominently featured in certain types of German wind orchestras, called Blaskapellen or Musikanten. The horn is named a Tenor Horn because its range of pitch is about the same as that for a typical tenor vocalist. The horn's native key is B-flat, the same as trombone and euphonium, and it

has a similar sound. However, the timbre of the Tenor Horn is midway -- brighter than a euphonium, but mellower than a trombone. This derives from the geometry of the instrument's bore and the Tenor Horn's distinctive oval shape: It "looks German," but the horn shown here is a V.F.Červený CTH-721, manufactured in the Czech Republic. This is understandable, because the kind of instrumental folk music (oom-pah music) we associate with Germany actually originated in Böhmen (Bohemia, now Czech Republic) in the 19th century and made its way west into what is now Germany. This model has four rotary valves, needing less finger movement for actuation than piston valves, and provide quick articulation for note-rich musical passages. The fourth valve is provided to extend the horn's lower range while maintaining correct tuning. Tenor Horns are also manufactured in Germany by Miraphon. A top quality, German-made Miraphon Tenor Horn sells new for between 4500 and 7600 Euros, depending on features and finish -- not cheap! Although they are popular in Germany, Tenor Horns are not sold in the USA. Is it a "contra-band" (pun) instrument?
