A picture may be worth a thousand words but for Karen Hacker, owner of Portrait Gallery, hav-ing the privilege to use her talent to capture the unspeakable essence of time, love and everlast-ing memories is what has driven her to become one of the most sought after photographers in the Kansas City area.

Having been a photographer for over 25 years, Karen’s true passion is being able to reflect the

individual’s personality and characteristics, which make them unique, through the lens of a camera.

“I encourage each new client to schedule a consultation before their photo session,” she said. “I not only want my clients to feel comfortable with me, but I take great pride in getting to know each one of them and finding out what their needs and wishes are.”

Karen and her husband David, both lifelong Independence residents, purchased the build-ing, which was formally the Eagles Lodge on the Independence Square in 1999. After three months of a total renovation, the Portrait Gallery opened in 2000, as they utilize every inch of space in the 15,000 square foot historic building.

“The third floor is perfect for photographing people with the natural light streaming in through the wrap around windows,” she said of the 15 designer sets, as well as the original walls of brick and plaster. “We also have the large studio on the main floor, equipped with state-of-the-art lighting equipment, props and various back-drops.”

Specializing in wall portraits, the Portrait Gallery also caters to every aspect of life’s events, from the birth of a baby to generation photos.

“We can accommodate up to 30 people comfortably in our studio,” she said. “Although we have had a photo session with as many as 50 individuals.”

Although admiring the photos she has taken, hanging in the gallery, is enough to convince clients Karen is the real deal, her credentials rein-force the natural talent she has in photography.

Among the numerous awards she has received from The Kodak Gallery, Karen has been named one of the top ten photographers in the state of Missouri for two years in a row, has received four Masterpiece Awards from Fuji, and has had eight images published in the Loan Collection with the Professional Photographers of America Associa-tion.

As one of the few Certified Professional Pho-tographers in the Kansas City area, along with her Master and Photographic Craftsman Degrees, she has also traveled from state-to-state to teach other photographers.

“With so many people having access to digital cameras, photography has become a miscon-ceived industry,” she said of the many variables that go into true photography. “It takes many years to learn the tricks of the trade and know-ing how to perfect everything from the lighting to positioning as well as taking the time to capture the perfect moment.”

Although she has had the opportunity to pho-tograph famous people such as President Clinton and the Truman family at the Truman Library, Karen’s ability to photograph from her heart is evi-dent, as every client is a famous person through the lens of her camera.

“True photography is not about the props, the lighting or the scenery,” she said. “It’s about the people.”

To see a slide show of Karen’s work visit www.portraitinc.com or visit her in person at the Portrait Gallery, 124 S. Main Street, Independence, Mis-souri 64050. Karen can be contacted by calling 816-461-5400.

As shoppers walked passed Primary Colors Gallery in December, their eyes were caught wandering through a corner of Santa’s workshop. The gallery showcased pencil sets, paint sets and art kits scattered on worktables and benches, but what caught the most attention, was Santa Clause steadily paint-ing a portrait of Mrs. Clause. Each week during Decem-ber, the portrait would slowly progress until it was finished Christmas week. It was a treat for square regulars to see the painting come to life. The window display seemed to echo the past with its raw and handmade nature, bringing imagination and childhood to light.

Each month, Gallery Direc-tor Erica Williams is faced with the challenge of design-ing a new window display. She uses simple materials like cardboard, foam core, paint, paper and store props to attract people’s attention to the featured product or

artwork. “I want the window to be

bright and big, calling not only to the people walking by, but also to the people driving by. If I can get them to stop what they’re doing and pull over to take a look at the store, then the win-dow is doing its job. People should take notice.” Erica Williams said. “This gallery features artwork from many talented local artists. Art is apart of our culture in how we express ourselves as a people and I am very grate-ful to be apart of a gallery that nurtures that work.”

Erica Williams’ talents do not stop at designing window displays, she also teaches basic art classes, designs print materials and product to sell in the gallery. All of this talent did not develop overnight. She has been pur-suing art since she was nine and furthered her educa-tion at Central Missouri State University, earning a B.F.A in Commercial Art.

The collec-tion of fine art, photo-graphs, kid’s creations and other memorabilia on your walls conveys the story of your life’s journey. As a Framing Professional, I see all types of artwork, and love the opportunity to offer sugges-tions to my clients about framing tech-niques that will enhance and preserve the art, while capturing a sense of the owner’s style. These points are key to creating a well-framed project:

Keep balance in mind. A proper combination of frame stock, mat, liner and fillet will create layers that draw the subject forward or give you the impression of depth, allowing you to visually step into the scene. Let the art define the frame width and style characteristics! Balance is

essential - no element should catch and hold your attention more than the art itself.

Color trends come and go. Color and texture close to the artwork can really set off the piece; add a more neutral top mat to meet the frame edge and be the largest visual “field” around the art. White, taupe, cream, eggshell and other soft-hued colors can be very effective at keep-ing bold colors vibrant without chal-lenging them, and assisting more pastel shades to be seen within the artwork. Neutral matting is timeless and blends with a variety of decor choices.

Keep your framed art healthy. As you consider purchasing artwork, think about where you might display it within your home or office space. Exposure to sunlight, humidity (of any level), smoke, dust and other condi-tions will take a toll in a short amount of time. Fading, warping and per-manent damage can be minimized, or avoided entirely, by using conser-vation-level materials and methods during the initial framing process. If you’ve had a favorite piece framed for a number of years, you may want to “refresh” it with UV-blocking glass, acid-free mat boards and more con-temporary choices in frame stock, allowing it to bring you pleasure for years to come.

Enhance your own life’s journey with art!

The highest compliment you can pay an artist is

to enhance and protect their creativity“ states Sherri Haupert, owner

of Winner Road Gallery in the Englewood Arts

District of Independence, Missouri. The gallery

features over a dozen local talents and

includes a custom frame shop open to the public,

which Sherri manages.
