Key points… Definition of ‘going green’ Pollution

Who causes pollution What can be done to stop pollution

Environmentally friendly appliances Organizations Ethical leadership Conclusion

Page 3: Going Green

What is ‘going green’? Awhile ago, people who ‘went green’

were considered ‘tree huggers’ or ‘whale savers’. But now its starting to get more and more popular

‘Greening’ is the process of changing your activities to conserve resources, reduce the stream of waste and pollutants, and lessen your overall impact on the environment

Pollution Pollution can be caused

by many things; electricity production, cars, factories, and people littering in lakes and rivers

Factories are the biggest reason for pollution They are generated by

power plants which lead to the smoke escaping into our air

Page 5: Going Green

Water pollution Finding fresh

water is starting to get more difficult as the years go on

Some factories dump hazardous substances into bodies of water“Each year, 1 million sea birds, 100,000 marine

animals, and 50,000 fur seals are killed as the result of eating or being strangled in plastic.”

Water pollution The main cause of

water pollution is caused by farms

“Farming uses about two-thirds of all water in the United States. Every year, millions of pounds of pesticides and fertilizers run off the farmland and contaminate the water supply.”

What about in your own home? Every household also takes place in

pollution and wasting water The average household uses around 80

gallons of water per day: flushing a toilet takes around 7 gallons of water, a bath takes around 30 gallons, a ten minute shower can take up to 70 gallons, a load of laundry takes up to 40 gallons, and a load of dishes in a dishwasher take up to 12 gallons of water

What can be done to stop pollution?

Turn off lights and appliances when they are not being used

Environmentally friendly appliances

Recycle

Environmentally friendly appliances There are a lot of appliances that save on water

and energy. Some are even made of recycled material

One common item that people are starting to switch to are fluorescent light bulbs. These bulbs send off less heat and more light so it can save you money on your electricity bill also

Other appliances are Dual Flush Toilets, which lets you control the amount of wateryou use when flushing

Countertops, washers, dryers, dishwashers, radiant in-floor heating, solar hot water systems, and even windows are other examples of energy saving household items

Ethical Behavior Morally right to want to help our planet, and

keep it clean for us to live in One of the ‘dos and don'ts’ in the ‘Unwritten

Laws of Business’ book is ‘Make it a rule to help the other person whenever an opportunity arises’ If everyone follows that and helps the

environment every time an opportunity arises in saving energy and water, our planet will be a nice and healthy place to live

There are many opportunities to help our planet

Page 14: Going Green

Random facts… If every American

recycled just one-tenth of their newspapers, we could save about 25 million trees a year

The amount of wood and paper we throw away each year is enough to heat 50 million homes for 20 years

Americans throw away enough glass bottles and jars to fill the 1,350 foot twin towers of the World Trade Center every two weeks

Americans dump 16 tons of sewage into their waters; every minute of every day

Page 15: Going Green

Conclusion Pollution can be caused

by many things, but can also be stopped

Reduce the amount of water you use in your house to save on water and energy

Use environmentally friendly appliances

Contribute to an organization

And of course.. recycle!
