GODDARD AT HOME:F.L.EX.® DAILY ACTIVITY PLANSKINDERGARTEN - OUR FIVE SENSES
Greeting
ACTIVITY Greet your child with a warm “Good morning!” Talk about smells you like and those you don’t. How can you avoid the ones you don’t like?
LEARNING SKILLS Science, biology, interpretation of data

Morning Meeting
Transition
ACTIVITY Work through a plan for the day. Talk about the five senses (taste, sight, smell, touch and hearing) and why they are so important to us. Remember to make time for fun things you and your child would like to do. Write it on your plan.
LEARNING SKILLS Reflection, critical thinking, working memory
Materials Daily chart, paper, pencils or markers
ACTIVITY Read the book or view the read aloud for I Hear a Pickle: and Smell, See, Touch & Taste It, Too! by Rachel Isadora. Talk about what foods your child likes, the characters in the story and all five senses as they were discovered in the story. It is a long book, so feel free to break it up into parts and read it throughout the day.
LEARNING SKILLS Listening, biology, vocabulary, key ideas and details
Materials Book or read aloud

Pre-Exploration
ACTIVITY Have your child select six to eight spices from your spice rack. Be careful with the pepper!
LEARNING SKILLS Preparation, organization
Materials Spices
Purposeful Exploration
Post-Exploration
ACTIVITY Have your child smell each of the spices. What do they smell like? Does your child like each smell? Ask your child to pour a little bit of one spice in one of the bowls. Next, your child can add a little water to make “smelly” paint. Then try the same with each spice. Now your child can use the brush and paint with the spices. Once the paper is dry, you can guess which spice is which by smelling the paper.
LEARNING SKILLS Scientific exploration, fine motors skill development, creativity
Materials Spices, bowls, waters, paintbrush, paper
ACTIVITY Talk about what your child created. Ask your child about the activity. Which spice was your child’s favorite? Display the art in the kitchen.
LEARNING SKILLS Reflection, communication

LEARNING SKILLS Vocabulary, explaining details, interpretation of data

Learning Lab
ACTIVITY Play an indoor seek-and-find game using the sense of sight. Write the names of objects around the house on a chart. Ask your child to read the word and then find the object. Use a tub or bin where your child can collect the objects. Did your child find them all? For non-readers, you can use pictures of the items or find items that start with different letters.
LEARNING SKILLS Vocabulary, reading, print knowledge

What about a frog sound with stones? What does the wind sound like? Act out different weather scenarios using sounds and gestures.
