TTWENTY EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME– October 15, 2017
Reflection
Prayer for the United States Almighty Father, bless the United States of
America. When we are at our best, we are shining reminder and defender of the human dignity with which you
have blessed every person. This American experiment has provided an extraordinary mantle
of justice under which countless people have enjoyed the freedom to live out the rights and
duties that come with our human dignity. And yet we have failed and continue to fail at
times to respect justice and human dignity. I ask your forgiveness for all of the way, past and
present, that we have ignored the value of human life; the sacredness of marriage, the family, and sexuality; the rights of all people of every race and religion; the responsibilities we all have toward the poor. Forgive me, Father, for the
ways in which I have personally participated and allowed my conscience to be formed by these sins
of our society. Send your Spirit upon our nation, Father, to
deepen and enrich our best instincts and most admirable traditions, and to cleanse us of our
most selfish and sinful ways. May the Church in America flourish and grow strong in faith and love, making the Gospel of Christ known in our
land.
Sts. John de Brebeuf & Isaac Jogues
Jesuit martyrs of North America. John was born in Conde-surVire, in Normandy, France, on March 25, 1593. Joining the Society of Jesus, he was ordained in 1622. Three years later he volunteered for the missions in Quebec, Canada. For the next quarter of a century with a brief interruption, he labored among the Huron Indians. His labors were placed in jeopardy because of Huguenot renegades and a smallpox epidemic that decimated the entire Indian villages. John left for a brief time when the English captured Quebec, but returned to the Hurons again. In 1649 he was captured by the Iroquois, who were enemies of the Huron. John and his companions were cruelly slain on March 16th at Sault Ste. Marie near the Georgian Bay. His companions were: Isaac Jogues, Anthony Daniel, Gabriel Lalement, Charles Gamier, Noel Chabanel, John Lalande, and Rene Goupil - all Jesuits. John de Brebeuf converted seven thousand Indians and composed a dictionary and catechism in the Huron language. He was canonized in 1930.

TTWENTY EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME– October 15, 2017
SSt. John the Evangelist Church Dear Parish Family of St. John the Evangelist,
It seems that the decision to change the Sunday Mass schedule, in accordance with the directives of the Archdiocese, was hastily made on my part.
Therefore, the Sunday Mass Schedule will remain the same next year except during the summer, when attendance drops off.
Please be advised that in the future the Sunday Mass Schedule will be monitored and re-evaluated.
As you know, many parishes in the Archdiocese of New York, and elsewhere, are being closed or consolidated.
There is a real shortage of Priests here in New York. Please pray for vocations.
From Saturday/Sunday of Memorial Weekend Through
Saturday/Sunday of Labor Day Weekend
The Mass Schedule
Saturday: 4:00pm, and 5:30pm Sunday: 7:30am, 9:00am, 11:30am, 5:30pm
Thank you for your patience and understanding,
God Bless you,
Rev. Philip J. Caruso
