Allow me to have some fun: Google, Face- book, Amazon Prime, Microsoft, pick your internet giant, have finally figured a way to eliminate cash and double down on your internet servitude, you playing with their bit coin, their electronic e- media money and making you like it because of the danger of close personal contact with another human being. They are half way there. Achieving a no-cash society will strengthen your bond to digital slavery. Why touch someone? Why go anywhere? We already engage in this behavior, and like it. The already addictive nose-down-into-your-phone lifestyle will no longer be optional behavior, but mandatory behavior, the internet being the only available media of transaction. The failure to obey could be pun- ished by a government agency deleting your worth with a single click. Half a million digital dollars evaporated into digital space. Total control achieved. What better than a world virus to fast-track it to the end. Do you think me mad? But I digress. Your inscrutable and toilet paper rich commodore, is inhaling and exhaling without a problem, not being radically effected, knock on wood, by any more than my usual poverty stricken, social secu- rity check life and the singularity of my lifestyle. And Carol and I are well. In the meantime, try to enjoy the time off from the world. I say ‘try’ because, well, it’s not going to be easy, especially for those trying to create wealth, precariously teetering between fortune and regularity. This will pass, the above notwithstanding. When it does, be ready to shoot out the back end when this is over. We will go from ghost-town to boom-town in record time, but how the deck is reshuffled is above my pay grade. In memoriam Ed vogel

Born September 4, 1921

Died March 4, 2020

The Jib * The Long Island Single Sailor’s Association * Vol. 33 No. 4 April 2020

We lost a great one.

Ed was a major contributor to LISSA throughout the years. His knowledge and experience on the water was always extensive but his true measure was his desire to teach what he knew. Ed was the original LISSA Old Salt and will be remembered by what he gave to all of us. His knowledge of sailing and his willingness to teach it enriched our lives. He once rented a classroom at a local High School and gave lessons. He has taught sailing on and off the water, and chart reading and navigation and, for all those who wanted to sail, always had an open boat. He was also a golfer. I don't know what his handicap was, but it doesn't mat-ter. He played golf more than he sailed as time went on. And, last I remember him, he was danc-ing at Nocello's at one of our socials. Ed is gone but, perhaps, there is some solace here to know that Ed's was a life well lived. There's a certain joy in that. He was 98, God bless him. I will miss him. May he rest in peace. Howard
