FIVE POEMS
Translated from the Konkani by the author
LIKE YOU 0 GOA
I am not a man of iron I am not a man of butter 0 Goa! I am a man Made of your dear, red, fertile earth . . .
Like your land 0 Goa My heart of ruby red Like your green fields My hope is ever- green
Like your sky, 0 Goa Are my dreams soft and blue Like your flowers Are my tears perfumed
Sweet and full is my love Like your full juicy fruits And in my veins do ever flow Your milk-white streams.
Troubled is my life Like the waves of Zuvary Like your wind, 0 Goa Restless is my song.
THE GOAN MANGO
A drop of honey A spot of Gold The Goan mango.
A basketful of Mogras A bunch of marigold The Goan Mango.
A slice of the Sun A handful of moonlight The Goan Mango. Soft as the cheeks of a child Sweet as the lips of a bride Full as the breasts of a maiden Sweet seventeen Shyly bold The Goan Mango.
A hymn of joy A song of fragrance The wealth, the pride Of Goa the Golden The Goan Mango.
