Goal & Requiremnts

• Dedicated R2E Session in Chamonix 2010

• There we’ve to present a draft ‘long-term plan’

• That leaves us ~2 months, i.e., 4-5 R2E meetings

• For a reasonable ‘proposal’ many things are unknown

or pending

• We’ve to put the focus on filling the gaps as much as

possible

Long-Term Plan Strategy• Early measurements of radiation levels, experience during operation

(observed failures) and updated simulations define criticality and a rough

time limit when shielding mitigation actions will reach their limits– Problem: until end of December we’ll (‘hopefully’) not learn much

• Solutions for all critical areas are studied in parallel and prepared whenever

possible – Shielding & Relocation– Problem: until end of December we don’t have enough time

• Action plan with instructions on how to deal with a situation where

equipment may fail if new civil engineering turn out not to be possible– Proposed by S. Weisz during the last meeting -> additional shielding?, reduced

intensity?, local relocation?

• New equipment to be installed in critical areas has to follow requirements

defined by a new radiation policy for the accelerator sector (design, testing,

redundancy,…)– Problem: getting a final Policy (even advanced draft) by January is challenging

To get a consistent proposal by Chamonix2010 is a CHALLENGE

LHC Tunnel Requirements• Known problems:

– New WordFIP (issue solved for nQPS), i.e., problematic for new equipment

and ?replacements?

– SEE failure of BLM card -> however fail safe

– BPM intensity card (required for low intensities only)

– BPM uFIP cards -> not an issue as handled through orbit feedback

• Unknown problems:

– What did the past measurements miss?

– They will show up during operation or future test-campaigns

(what is required? – Daniel, Thijs?)

• All new equipment requires a full system design, testing (components

and system) and final approval (review) by the RadWG

• Missing:

– Update simulation studies for DS and ARC (in the moment we have a

range of ~three orders of magnitudes - FLUKA Team (in the moment low in

the priority list)

• Anything else?

Point 7 Requirements• What are the radiation levels in the RR73/77 and UJ76?

• Option to temporarily relocate betatron collimation to Point-3 (see memo)

• UJ76:

– How effective is the installed shielding wall (further improvement possible?)

– Relocation of equipment when possible and prepared

– Missing: • TZ76 remaining preparations – Sylvain?

• SafeRoom final solution (if shielding is not sufficient)

• Refined priority list of equipment (if necessary) – Thijs?

• Remaining cost estimate

• Ongoing simulations for additional absorbers – Markus

– ??? If additional absorbers and observed radiation levels proof possible –

do we stop the relocation ???

– Verification of shielding effectiveness during operation

• US85:

– How effective is the installed shielding wall for the Safe-Room (further

improvement possible and to be decided on)

– Space available and identified for full relocation of equipment

– Final location and required shielding for Cryo-Equipment identified

– Cost estimate for cryo-removal exists

– Equipment inventory as complete as it gets

– Missing: • Integration study for full relocation – Anne-Laure?

• Removal (or local relocation) of spare parts, especially when

under power

• Radiation tests of remaining components

• Further improvement of monitoring (battery driven RadMons,

next Generation RadMons)

• Check of remaining areas currently considered as not critical

(during operation)
