Fabrics are from the Cotton Couture Solids and Pets a Plenty Collections and are provided by Michael Miller Fabrics.

Sewing Directions: Press seams open and use ¼" seams, unless otherwise indicated.

Block 1

1. Join one blue solid quarter square triangle (QST) (Shape 4) and one blue fish print QST (Shape 4) together along the long edge to make one QST unit.

2. Sew the QST unit to one wave print half square triangle (HST) (Shape 3) to make a square.

3. Join one blue solid (HST) (Shape 3) and one wave print HST (Shape 3) together along the long edge to make a square. Repeat to make three large HST units.

4. Arrange the four units in two rows as shown. Join the units in each row together. Join the rows together, matching seams.

Block 2

1. Referring to the diagram below, join one blue solid and one wave print QST (Shape 4) together along the long edge to make one QST unit. Sew a blue fish print HST (Shape 5) to the top edge of a blue fish print square (Shape 2). Sew a red print HST (Shape 5) to the left side of the blue fish print square (Shape 2). Sew this unit to the HST unit to make a 4½" square. This is the top left unit of Block 2.


2. Join one wave print HST (Shape 5) and one red fish print HST (Shape 5) together along the long edge to make one HST unit. Sew a wave print HST (Shape 5) to the top and left edges of the HST unit as shown. Sew the assembled large HST to a blue solid HST (Shape 3) to make the top right unit of Block 2.

3. Sew a red fish print rectangle (Shape 8) to a blue fish print rectangle (Shape 8) along a long edge to make the bottom left unit of Block 2.

4. Sew a blue solid HST (Shape 5) to each long edge of the right-angled parallelogram (Shape 7). Repeat to sew a blue solid HST (Shape 5) to each long edge of the left-angled parallelogram (Shape 7) as shown. Sew the two parallelogram units together to make the bottom right unit of Block 2.

Block 3

1. Join one wave print and one red fish print HST (Shape 5) together along the long edge to make one HST unit. Sew a wave print HST (Shape 5) to the top and left edges of the HST unit as shown. Sew the assembled large HST to a blue solid HST (Shape 3) to make a 4½" square. This is the top left unit of Block 3.


2. Join one blue solid HST (Shape 3) and one wave print HST (Shape 3) together along the long edge to make a HST unit measuring 4½" square. Repeat to make two more HST units.

3. Arrange the four units in two rows as shown. Join the units in each row together. Join the rows together, matching seams.

Block 4

1. Join one blue solid HST (Shape 3) and one wave print HST (Shape 3) together along the long edge to make a large HST unit. Repeat to make one more HST unit. Sew the HST units together as shown to make the top row of Block 4.

2. Join one blue fish print and one red fish print rectangle (Shape 8) together along a short edge to make the bottom row of Block 4.

3. Sew the rows together.


Block 5

1. Sew one red fish print HST (Shape 5) to the left edge of a blue fish print square (Shape 2). Sew one blue fish print HST (Shape 5) to the bottom edge of the square to make one large HST unit. Sew the assembled large HST to a blue solid HST (Shape 3) to make a 4½" square. This is the top left unit of Block 5.

2. Join one blue fish print HST (Shape 5) and one red fish print HST (Shape 5) to the short edges of a wave print quarter square triangle (QST) (Shape 4) as shown. Sew a wave print rectangle (Shape 8) to the long edge of the QST. This is the top right unit of Block 5.

3. Sew the units together to make the top row of Block 5.



Block 6

1. Sew one red fish print HST (Shape 5) to the top edge of a wave print square (Shape 2). Sew one wave print HST (Shape 5) to the right edge of the square (Shape 2) to make one large HST unit. Sew the assembled large HST to a blue solid HST (Shape 3) to make a 4½" square as shown. This is the top left unit of Block 6.

2. Join one blue solid and one wave print HST (Shape 3) together along the long edge to make a HST unit measuring 4½" square. This is the top right unit of Block 6.


3. Sew the units together to make the top row of Block 6.



Assemble the Bag Front

1. Referring to the bag front assembly diagram, arrange the pieced blocks in two vertical rows of three blocks each. Sew the blocks together. Press the seams in opposite directions on alternating rows.

2. Matching the block seams, sew the rows together. Press the seams in one direction.

3. Trim the assembled rows to 14" x 24".

4. Sew one blue fish print 2" x 24" strip to the top of the bag front. Sew the remaining blue fish print 2" x 24" strip to the bottom of the bag front.


Bag Assembly and Finishing:

1. Following the manufacturer's instructions, apply the fusible batting rectangles to the wrong side of the pieced front and one 17½" wave print rectangle. Quilt the front 1/4" from the outline of the fish.

2. Sew the bag front to the bag back with right sides together, using a 1/2" seam allowance. Do not turn right side out.

3. To create the box edges, fold one bottom corner so the bottom seam is aligned with the side seam and pin in place. Measure 2" from the corner and draw a line that is perpendicular to the seam, making sure the seam is centered. Stitch along the line. Trim the excess corner fabric. Repeat for the opposite corner.

4. Repeat Steps 2 and 3 to sew the remaining wave print rectangles together for the lining, leaving a 6" opening in the bottom seam.

5. Turn the outer bag right side out and press the seams. Do not turn the lining.


6. Following the manufacturer's instructions, apply the fusible interfacing to the wrong side of each wave print handle strip. Press each strip in half lengthwise with wrong sides together. Open the fold and press the long edges to meet at the crease of the fold line with wrong sides together. Press the fold closed, encasing the raw edges. Topstitch the folded edges together.

7. With raw edges even, pin the ends of one handle to the top edge of the bag front, 6½" from the side edges. Repeat to pin the remaining handle to the top edge of the bag back.

8. Place the outer bag inside the lining with right sides together, aligning the side seams and upper edges. Pin, then stitch the upper edges together, using a 1/2" seam allowance.

9. Pull the outer bag through the opening in the lining, turning the lining right side out. On the lining, press under the opening seam allowances and slipstitch closed.

10. Insert the lining in the bag and press the top seam. Topstitch around the top edge.
