HILL RAMPS UP DEFENCEWITH FANTASTIC FIVE-TIMERThe season is well and truly crankingup now with eleven meetings lastweekend and a further ten this.Looking back and it was a great coupleof days for the Alan Hill as he rampedup his pursuit of Jack Barber in a bidto defend his Connolly’s Red MillsLeading Trainer title.

Kingston Blount is always a happyhunting ground for Hill and it was nodifferent at Saturday’s KingstonBlount Racing Club meeting. TheOxfordshire-based handler saddled atreble on the day with wins courtesy ofStart Royal (Ladies Open),Ravethebrave (Mens Open) and BrainsWell (Restricted).On Sunday Quinz got back to winningways in the Mens Open at Godstoneand Sharp Suit also regained thewinning thread after losing hisunbeaten record between the flags lasttime out by taking the Ladies Open atAmpton, giving the Hill yard their fifthwinner of the weekend.Elsewhere, it was a great weekend forthe Welsh jockey John Mathias whofired in four winners. John got the ball

rolling with a fine treble at the Brecon& Talybont fixture at Llanfrynach onSaturday, the highlight coming aboardthe prolific Open winner RosiesPeacock, who was recording her 23rdsuccess between the flags.

Wins aboard Champagne Benefit(Hunt Members) and DesertmoreView (Restricted) were followed by awin on Cockney Trucker in the MensOpen at Charlton Horethorne’sBlackmore & Sparkford Vale fixture tocap off a great weekend.

It seems a weekend cannot passwithout Will Biddick grabbing a chunkof the headlines and he did so againwith a four-timer which included aquick-fire treble at CharltonHorethorne. Ask The Weatherman(Hunt Members), Boa Island (OpenMaiden, Div 1) and Siege Of Troy(Open Maiden, Div 2) were allvictorious in the first three races, andhaving won the final race on the DukeOf Beaufort’s Didmarton card, it wasfour wins on the bounce for therunaway Championship Leader.

Another rider to bag a treble wasDicky Collinson, the first of his careerin fact, and one of a host of

landmarks which can be seen on page25. Sally Randell, the only woman rider towin the Grand Military Gold Cup,landed the spoils for the third time onLoose Chips at Sandown on March 6,just a few days short of her 31stbirthday, and immediately announcedher retirement from the saddle.

She enlisted in the Royal Artillery atthe age of 19, having decided upon anArmy career following a day trip,during her equine studies course atHartpury, to the King's Troopheadquarters. Her five years Armyservice entitled her to ride in all the

Military races, and in addition to hertwo previous Grand Military victorieson Oakfield Legend (2009) andBradley (2014) she won the 2011 RoyalArtillery Gold Cup on Surenaga.

She returned to Hartpury, where shegained a degree in Sports Science, andthen spent a year with Dai Williams,for whom she rode her first winner,Dandygrey Russett on the flat atWolverhampton in 2008. Her finaltally on licensed tracks was ten, sevenof those being over jumps.

Her initial Point-to-Point success wason Rich Nomad at Eyton in 2009, andby the time she hung up her Pointingboots to concentrate on training shehad recorded 16 successes. Her last ridebetween the flags was on ChesnutAnnie at Howick in March 2013.

She has just completed the second ofher trainer's modules at the BritishRacing School, and after the third one,in June, she is looking forward to takingover the reins at Broad Hinton fromAndy Turnell, to whom she has beenassistant for the past nine months.

A TRIO OF WINNERS IN THESUBARU POINT-TO-POINTSERIESThe busiest weekend in the SubaruRestricted Point to Point series so farsaw three races spanning an area ofover 750 miles across the UnitedKingdom with seven horses securingqualification for the series final atStratford-Upon-Avon Racecourse onFriday 29 May.

The most eventful race was onSaturday 7 March at Kingston Blountin Oxfordshire, where only one ofthe eight race starters completed, as

many runners tired and pulled up.Local horse, ‘Brians Well’ was fit andready for the challenge under JamesTudor rewarding owner RodneyMann, a long-standing servant to theKimblewick Racing Club whoorganise the Kingston Blount fixture.In Northumberland on Sunday 8March, jockey Kate Rowntreepartnered course specialist ‘BafanaChoice’ to his third victory at thetrack for owner George White andtrainer Sue Grant. On the same day,at the Suffolk Hunt fixture atAmpton, evens favourite, ‘AutumnHaze’ continued the winning streak

for the in-form James Owen yardwith an impressive return to thepointing arena after a four seasonabsence.

Momentum is now building forqualification for the May final thatboasts a prize-fund of £10,000 as theseries is now at its mid-point. Nextweekend sees two qualifiers atParham in Sussex and Marks Tey inEssex, both on Saturday 14 March.

Local dealers are in attendance at allSubaru qualifiers, displayingfourwheel drive models including thenew model Subaru Outback.

CONNOLLY’S RED MILLS PRECISION NUTRITION SERIES 2014/15Kingston Blount Racing Club at Kingston Blount by Carolyn Tanner‘Could lightning strike three times?’was the question after Full Trottle hadbooked his place in the Connolly’sfinal at Cheltenham with anauthoritative victory in the qualifier atKingston Blount in the hands of SamPainting. The winners of thecorresponding race in the twoprevious years were Harbour Courtand Sharp Suit, who went on to landthe championship in 2013 and 2014respectively.

Bought for £5,000 at the DBSNewbury Sale a year ago by NormanThomas, Full Trottle is trained by hisdaughter Laura adjacent to BarburyRacecourse.

“I didn’t like him very much when hecame,” admitted Laura, who describesher charge as “a total and utter nutter!He’s not nasty,” she added, “but he’snaughty to ride and he panics a lot. Wedo think a lot of him, though.”

Laura felt that giving him more timebetween his races had helped to settlehim, and she was delighted with hisfoot-perfect performance, althoughdue to low sun six jumps had to be

omitted in this contest. In previousraces, she pointed out, he had beenmore revved up and had tended tobulldoze his way through a fence ortwo on his way round.

Alan Hill’s success is an excellentadvertisement for Connolly’s feed, andthe trainer of both Harbour Court andSharp Suit is looking to make it a hat-trick of victories. He achieved his aimof qualifying Man Of Steel, whofinished runner-up under son Joe.

Successful in three Bumpers, in one ofwhich he defeated the then JonjoO’Neill trained Full Trottle, the six-year-old was purchased at Ascot inOctober for £8,500 out of PeterBowen’s yard, and has been leased forthis season to Toby Hunt and FredRoughton.

“We were over the moon with his runat Larkhill, where he would probablyhave finished second to SubtleSovereign if his saddle hadn’t slippedcoming round the last bend,” saidAlan, adding “He was a little sharp

when he arrived, but he’s a nice ridenow.” His penchant for bucking – “Hegot loose a few times,” – the trainerput down to a slight problemdiscovered after the horse’sdisappointing round of jumping atThorpe, and which now seems to havebeen ironed out.

Finishing a respectful distance back inthird was Claire Hart on the consistentKazuri Kate, who had qualified in thesame position at Chaddesley Corbett afortnight earlier, while it was job donefor fourth placed Out Of Range,whose connections, ownerChristopher Padfield and trainerPauline Harkin, also had a Cheltenhamrun on their wish list.

The 17hh son of High-Rise hadstarted life as an eventer and wasbought from Nigel Taylor. He isreferred to at home as “The Kitchen,”due to the fact that Christopherbought him with the money which hadbeen earmarked for his wife Clare’supdating project!

Hugh Condry, the doyen of Point-to-Point writers, has died at the age of 88.He had been unwell for some time.

He retired in 2011 after reporting onthe sport for more than half a century,firstly with Horse & Hound, where heworked for over 30 years, 14 of whichwere spent as deputy editor.

It was during the time when thatpublication gave racing between theflags extensive coverage, and his

immaculately written copy was essentialreading for all followers.He later moved to cover Pointing forthe Racing Post Weekender, and formany years he also produced a weeklyreport for the Daily Telegraph. Inaddition, he penned an annual reviewfor the Point-to-Point form book.In 2005 he received the Committeeaward, presented annually at theNational Point-to-Point Dinner, forservices to the sport.

Originally based in Wiltshire, Hughmoved to Dulverton in 2003 with hissecond wife Sue, whom he married in1998. He is survived by Sue and histwo daughters, Kate and Judith, fromhis first marriage to Audrey, who diedin 1995.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, theThanksgiving Service for Hugh,scheduled for March 18th, has beenpostponed until a later date. Details willbe announced in due course.

My granddad is Mick Easterby;my mum, Susan, used to ride in Points(she was Yorkshire Champion in1988); my dad, Ian, never rode, but hissister, Caroline, trained WaggonersWalk, a home-bred, to win the 1980National Hunt Chase and the 1981Kim Muir at the Cheltenham Festival.Several aunties and cousins rode/ride,one of whom is Jacqueline Coward.

What was your first ride in public?My first ride was actually on the Flat atBeverley, in August 2006, on a horsecalled Emperor’s Well. He was thatmuch of a legend he went into thestalls by himself. I was second, but ifI'd have used my whip I couldhave won!

First winner – name of thehorse, owner & trainer, the date &the course: West Coaster in theNovice Riders race, at the South WoldPoint-to-Point at Brocklesby Park, formy parents. I can't really remember theride but it was in my first season ridingin 2007.

Apart from the first winner, whathas been your most memorableride? I think that would be winningthe 2010 Grimthorpe Gold Cup onour mare Poppy Day - that year wewon five races together.

Is there a ride you look back onand think “could have donebetter?” Most rides I think if only I'dhave done this or been there. I'm verycritical and like to look back at myraces.

For which trainers/owners do youmainly ride? My parents, StephEasterby, The Barkers and RichardMason; but I will ride what I can.

Who has been most influential onyour riding career so far? Myparents, grandad, uncle David(Easterby), and my boyfriend, Oliver,who is also very supportive and helpsme out a lot. When I first startedriding on the Flat, jockey PaulMulrennan said to me: "Squeeze thehorse like a tube of toothpaste and tipthe back of the saddle,” and thatseems to have stuck.

Which are your favourite courses?And for what reasons? My favouritecourses are normally the ones I ridewinners at, but Sheriff Hutton is afirm favourite. I did love Whitwell-on-the-Hill, which used to stage theMiddleton meeting. It had fantasticviewing, good fences andprobably the only proper openditch with water runningthrough; unfortunately, thecourse is nomore.

Whatcar do youdrive? FordFocus.

Name yourperfectnight in andperfect night out:Night in would be afilm or watching TVwith the fire on. Night outwould be a meal with friendsand dancing.

Where do you like to go onholiday? I'm on the go all yearround as I ride on the Flat so trying

to fit a week in is manic. Of late I'vebeen going to Port d'Andratx inMajorca with my boyfriend, TheMahons and The Cottons. It’s nice torelax and not see a horse.

Who would be your ideal travellingcompanions to the races? I normallytalk a lot or sleep, so anyone thatwould drive me or who wouldn't mindmy talking.

What music are you currentlylistening to? Anything in the charts.

What are your favourite films andTV programmes? Film - Sea Biscuit;TV - Made In Chelsea.

What has been either your ownfunniest incident, or the mostamusing thing you have seen orheard at the races? We were at thestart at Bedale Point-to-Point andthink we'd been delayed due to amember of the crowd having to beattended to by the ambulance. Wemust have been walking round forsome time and typical of Jacqueline(Coward) she was desperate for theloo. She hopped off her mount andsquatted behind a tree, some were

surprised, and others weren’t!

JO MASONYorkshire born and bred, Jo hails from a family steeped in a rich tradition of Pointing and racing. She has enjoyed

success between the flags, over jumps and on the Flat, and made it to HOYS last year with her ex-racehorse Liverpool.


Who are your biggest heroes inracing? Apart from AP McCoy itwould have to be Richard Johnson.

Which particular horse (in anydiscipline) would you like to ride? Ihave a soft spot for Hurricane Fly, sowould love to ride him! I have riddenMenorah out when he is in pre-trainingat Anabel Murphy’s at the start of theseason - he's awesome.

Apart from race-riding, in whatother sports do you participate? Iused to be a good hockey player,playing National League, but horsesand hunting with the Middleton everySaturday took over. I play a bit ofnetball on a week night, and I've takenup Showing in the summer with my ex-racehorse Liverpool (on whom I wontwo races). He won all five of his showslast year and we got to the Horse of theYear Show. That was an amazingexperience for a non-Showing person.

Do you have any regrets in yourriding career to date? Not regrets, butI do think that maybe I should haveturned Apprentice.

What ambitions do you have inracing? I would love to be able to rideinto the winners enclosure atCheltenham - that would be some buzz- and to be Champion Amateur Flatjockey. But to be the best I can, stay fitand keep riding winners; I'd be prettyhappy with that.

Are there any changes that youthink would benefit the sport in thefuture? Not allowing professionals inour Amateur sport, e.g. Hunter Chases,we can't run in their professional races;and better prize money.

What are your aspirations for theseason? I'm currently second in theAll-Weather Championship, and to winthat would be amazing. With regards toPointing, I'm currently on 45 Point-to-Point/Rules winners and would love tomake the half-century. To be AreaChampion would be an achievement,but I have been runner-up a fair fewtimes to my cousin Jacqueline.

Can you give us a horse to look outfor this season? We've got a lovelyhorse called Comedinewithme. She was

unlucky at Friars Haugh, due to theshort run-in, but followed-up nicely towin at last month’s Sinnington meeting.She’s still very green and will come onfor the experience.

Can you give us an up and comingrider to look out for this season?Henry Morshead; he's had a couple ofunlucky rides but has come from aPony Racing background and landedhis first winner at the recent Tynedalemeeting at Corbridge. He is bred to dothe job from good Yorkshire stock(grandsire former Cheltenham GoldCup winning trainer Peter Beaumontand dam, Anthea Morshead, a verygood Amateur jockey and YorkshireArea Point-to-Point Champion onnumerous occasions).

If you were on an island and couldonly bring three things, what wouldyou bring? My phone (with a Wi-Ficonnection), my dog Pixie, and my bed.

And finally, sum up Point-to-Pointing in one word: Invigorating.

Fittingly, I went to meet Adlestroptrainer/jockey Claire Hart a few daysafter the death of Jill Dawson and justbefore Claire won the LeicestershireHunters’ Chase to emotional scenes,on Palypso de Creek for Jill’s husbandMike. Much has been written about Jilland her contribution to the sport asjockey, owner/trainer and personality,and it was the talented Palypso deCreek who helped put Claire on themap.

“I’d always had a couple of horses athome,” Claire begins, “but startedtraining seriously in 2011 and Palypsowas my first really good horse. He’drun in the Grand National for CharlieLongsdon – where I worked and stillride out – but had lost his way. Charliesuggested that owner Alan Halsallsend him to me to run in Point-to-Points and Hunter Chases and I lovedthe idea of a rescue mission!”

The deal was that the horse would betrained by Claire for a season and thenbe sold. “I won two Points with him atWhitfield and Sandon and he wasplaced in four Hunter Chases. Jill cameto see him just before he ran atCheltenham (where he was third) andasked me to ride him in a Ladies Openat Dingley a couple of weeks later,where we beat Billyvoddan. I’d had agreat season, but thought that wouldbe the end of it.”

Sadly of course, Jill Dawson’s cancerreturned in 2012 and – as a result,Claire kept the ride on the horse nowtrained by Jill and Mike. Since then,Claire and Palypso de Creek have wonten out of their 12 Point-to-Points –eight in the 2012/2013 season whenhe was winning most horse – and fiveout of seven Hunter Chasers, finishingsecond on all their other runs.

The other horse principallyresponsible for putting Claire on themap as a jockey was the prolific mareLady Myfanwy, winner of anincredible 35 races before retiring lastyear. Claire was on board for eight ofthose victories in 2011 and 2012. Shetakes up the story. “I was riding atCharlie Longsdon’s and Hannah Lewistold me there was a spare ride going atKingston Blount, so I dashed there tomake it in time, getting changed on theway! I met the Miles’, who own thehorse, for the first time in thepaddock.” And it seemed that noteveryone was impressed by Claire’s

credentials. “Carl Evans told someonethat I was a ‘family rider’ – the cheekyso and so!”

It’s hard to believe now that she is inthe highest echelon of female jockeys,but Claire was a relative novice at thetime and Lady Myfanwy at KingstonBlount was only her tenth winner.However, she soon proved hercredentials as a rider, using the mare asa launch-pad to winning the AGA forthe leading rider in Ladies Races in2012. “We went everywhere to winthat AGA – we won two races onPalypso, two on Myfanwy and one onPower Shared down at Littlewindsor.”So where’s the AGA now? “In Mum’skitchen!”

“Mum” is former rider Helen, whosebiggest win was a Cheltenham HunterChase on Behest in 1981 and still anactive part of Claire’s team atAdlestrop, while uncle Simon is well-known in the sport, having ridden 49winners – “I’m always asked why Ididn’t get to 50 and stop, but I couldhave been trying forever” – and now aprominent figure in the SouthMidlands Area. He relates amarvellously self-deprecating storyabout his first ride, on Veni Vici atKingston Blount in 1977:

“I only got the phone call saying I wasriding the night before so I phonedhome and asked Mum to pack my bagfor me. I took it from her at thecourse and started to get changed. Butwhen I pulled out my britches, I foundthat she’d packed my Morris Dancingtrousers instead! I had to ride in a pairof white trousers, but luckily I wasbrought down early so I could runback and get changed before anyonenoticed.” What Simon didn’t say – butI looked it up – is that owner GeorgeHyatt decided to ride the horsehimself next time out… and won!

Back to Claire, who had her first rideon Westington in 2001. “I was bloodyuseless,” she candidly admits, “but Ilearnt from it, which is why Iappreciate what I’ve got now. I’ve hadto work at it.” Given that it took herten years to get established as a top-rank jockey, it is no surprise that she isa keen advocate of novice riders.Currently, she trains the experiencedMarblehead for Lily Pinchin to rideand Argentato for fellow newcomerJordan Nailor.

Lily’s story – she rides in colours oflight blue and pink with white hearts,designed by her 11-year old friendMaddy Hems who has cancer – hasbeen told elsewhere, so I asked Claireabout Jordan, from nearby Moreton-in-Marsh. “He’s only 16”, says histrainer and mentor, “but has so muchtalent and a really professional attitude.He’s made Argentato a happy horse.”And the results bear out Claire’s praise– after a season off the track, thehandsome grey has been third twice incompetitive Intermediate races behindgood horses meaning he has lost the“squiggle” so beloved of the form-book compilers and dreaded byowners and trainers!

Claire proudly showed off her otherhorses, including tough genuineKazuri Kate – “a lovely little mare”,experienced Vincitore – “he’s got amind of his own”, progressive Gift ofDreams – “he ran so well behindStorm Lantern at Larkhill and unracedLeith Hill Lad – “a half-brother towinning chaser Leith Hill Legasi”.

As well as the horses she trains herself,Claire is best-known now as the riderof the talented Alskamatic, trained byRichard Bandey, on whom she won anExeter Hunter Chase last year andfinished a close second in theConnolly’s Red Mills IntermediateFinal. “He can be a lazy, idle toe-rag,an absolute rogue,” giggled his jockey.“But at the same time he’s a lovely,wonderful horse. We started lastseason only just winning a Restrictedand ended up second at Cheltenham.”And the pair have continued toprogress this season, following up asecond to leading Foxhunters fancyCurrent Event with an easy win in aLadies Open at Milborne St Andrew.

Our chat came to a close as Clairewent to work some of her string. Shelegged up Lily Pinchin on FranMarriott’s impressive recent winnerDabinett Moon and mum Helen onVincitore, before getting on-board theunraced “Willy”, an unnamed seven-year old chestnut gelding byFleetwood, and riding up to the publicbridleway to give the three horses afast canter. I left Claire under sunnyCotswold skies, willing the engagingyoung trainer-jockey on to greatersuccess.

It does not take a Morse or Poirot towork out which saddle in the changingroom belongs to Dutch-born AnnaMetekohy, whose seat saver with itshorizontal tricolour replicates thenational flag of the Netherlands.

With a family who enjoyed travelling,and not only for the reason that herstepfather was in the RAF, Anna wasused to a nomadic life, but in recentyears her journeying has been mostlyin Britain.

She chose London as the venue for aBusiness Studies course, and workedin hospitality management beforemoving to West Wales, where she wasemployed as a groom by BeverlyThomas. She was there full-time fortwo years, and a further two which shecombined with working at anoptician's practice.

She rarely rode out while based withThomas, but racing was never far fromher mind, and a chance meeting in apub with trainer Dai Rees saw herchanging tack again. "We were bothdrunk," she laughed, "and I said I'dwork for him if I could have a ride ina Point-to-Point."

Rees took her on, but she admittedthat her first three days were spentcrying due to her aching muscles. "Iwas so weak that I couldn't lift thetack," she recalled, "and my ridingstyle was probably the funniest thing

that Dai and John Mathias had everseen!"

She got her wish, though, and madeher debut in 2011 at Lydstep, finishingsecond in the Ladies' Open on KishaKing after being instructed to "gowide and keep safe." She had a furtherthree rides on the ten-year-old and wasrunner-up on each occasion.

Looking to go to a big yard, she thenmoved to Tim Vaughan, with whomshe stayed for 18 months, and she hada few rides for Jonathan Tudor. It waswhile there that she got kicked in thehead by a horse she had taken out fora pick of grass. It was an injury whichshe described nonchalantly as "onlysuperficial - I just tore my cheek."

She nonetheless took a year out fromracing and moved back to her parents,who by this time were in Germany, foreight months. While there she went towork on a stud, where one of thehorses she broke in was the GermanDerby winner Sea The Moon.

On her return to Britain she went toJohn Gallagher for six months, and itwas at that time she met her fiancéBarry Denvir. In August the couplemoved to a yard rented from JoPaynter at Yelden, a stone's throwfrom the much missed NewtonBromswold Point-to-Point course, andare looking to build up a breaking andpre-training operation. There are 450

acres of arable land, with its tracks andheadland, to ride around, so there is nochance of their charges becomingbored. "We're new to the area so werealise we've got to be patient and getourselves known before people sendus horses," explained Anna, who ridesout in the mornings for Caroline Bailey.

It was when she moved from Gallagherto Evan Williams that Anna met thehorse who would provide her firstwinner between the flags. One of hercharges at Llancarfan was the nowretired Cappa Bleu, but one of the firstshe rode was Lauberhorn, on whomshe was given the rides when he waspurchased before the 2013/14campaign by Roger Willcox. Sheopened her account on the son ofDubai Destination at Howick in March,and from their seven collaborationsthey were in the winner's enclosure onfive occasions.

Anna had her first ride of the 2014/15season recently at Horseheath, whereshe gave Chandlers Cross a positiveride to finish second, and she is lookingforward to renewing the partnershipwith Lauberhorn this year (won theLadies Open race at Brecon & Talybontmeeting on Saturday). She would like tofind a sponsor, and as her travels aretaking her far and wide for rides, anybacker would surely get plenty ofpublicity and value for money for his orher support.

For how long have you beentraining?This is my second season, although Idid train Magic Sky on his own theseason before.Where are you based?Aston Le Walls, which is just north ofBanbury in Northamptonshire, givingus great access to courses around thecountry.Do you combine training withanother job or profession?We also have pre-trainers and breakersand I try and do two lots for PaulWebber as often as possible.What training facilities do you haveavailable?Along with a walker, we have a grasshill and round gallop which drainswell. We have a good schoolingground with a variety of fences andalso have a fantastic two mile grassgallop which is great for bringing onyoung horses. We have easy access tothe Edgcote Estate and their all-weather gallops.How many horses do you train?We currently have 8 horses in fulltraining.Do you train for just yourself andfamily or for other Owners?We train a few of our own that welook to bring on and sell, and ofcourse Magic Sky who is resident!However primarily we train for otherowners.Are you from a racing background?Our family have always ownedracehorses. Charlie [Poste] and I boughthim cheaply from Ascot Sales and tosee him win so impressively was rathernerve wracking but incredibly exciting.It was a particularly special day as hewon in the colours of one of our firstowners, John Pace, who sadly lost hisbattle with cancer in October.Did you race-ride before youstarted training?No, I always wanted to when Dad hadPointers when I was younger. He wasvery happy for me to ride out butalways told me I was too small andweak to race ride until after Icompleted and won a Golden Button -we then didn’t have any Pointers athome so the opportunity never aroseuntil I was given Magic Sky and it wasthen beyond his control!

How did you start training and whohas been most influential on yourtraining career?It was something I dreamt about doingas a child but as is often the casewithout a large pot of moneysometimes things are rather moretricky. I was given Magic Sky by SueBrown, and Dad then was sent twohorses from David Flood who bredthem in Ireland. John Funnell, whohas been a great supporter, thenapproached me and asked if I wouldtrain a couple of his horses andgradually things went from there. Dadand Charlie Poste have both been veryinfluential and a fantastic help and,along with Mum, are definitely mybiggest supporters.Which jockeys do you useregularly?Will Telfer and Sam Davies-Thomasmainly.What car do you drive?Very boring - a Golf.What kind of music do you like?An easier answer would probably havebeen to what music I don't like. I think any ofWillie Mullins’ 50 contenders for theFestival would be incredible to train. IfMany Clouds isn’t good enough to winthe Gold Cup he would certainly win afew Hunter Chases!

If you hadn't taken up training,what would you have done instead?I very nearly had a mundane office jobin London before realising at the lastminute it probably wouldn’t be for me.Which horses do you have at themoment that you would say havegood potential?Fortunata Fashions won veryimpressively by 22 lengths on herdebut at Brocklesby last weekend.Having broken her in during thesummer, she has always shown afantastic attitude and plenty of ability.She jumped like a true professionaland her time was only three secondsslower than the Ladies Open and 19seconds quicker than the OpenMaiden. She looks certain to have abig future under Rules and will begoing to the sales in the near future.What ambitions do you have inracing?It would be fantastic to see one of theyoung horses we have go on to be asuperstar. I would love to train awinner at the Cheltenham Festival anda Group 1 winner, but morerealistically to train with a highpercentage strike rate.What are your favourite coursesand meetings - and why?I have enjoyed riding at Whitfieldespecially as it is our local course. Ialso think Brocklesby is a lovelygalloping track and very fair.What do you consider to be thebiggest challenges for Point-to-Point trainers?I think getting new owners in is a bigchallenge. Unless they are Point-to-Point enthusiasts it is very difficultbecause the costs involved are notdissimilar to having a horse underRules and the prize money barelycovers your entry and transport.What are your opinions on thechanges in Point-to-Pointing inrecent years?I think Pointing is definitely moving inthe right direction. Things arebecoming more professional and theincrease in sponsorship has beenfantastic. I think the addition of theDBS bumper is a major positivebecause hopefully young Englishpointers will get recognition and notjust the Irish.What developments do you thinkwould benefit the sport in thefuture? I think the website could beimproved, it is frustrating not beingable to see any form from under rulesor how a horse is bred. I also thinkentry to prize money ratio needs re-thinking; by reducing the cost ofentries people may be encouraged tomake more entries, and possibly anentry tracking system similar to underrules could also be helpful? When itcomes to Open races, I think ‘openhandicaps’ could also be an addition.

Most young jockeys dream of makingthe front pages of the racing press, butJake Launchbury's headline makingwas not quite what he had envisaged.

Riding Bally Sands at Ludlow lastmonth, his fourth ride under Rules, hethrew away what appeared to be awinning chance by almost taking thewrong course before getting back ontrack to finish third. His lapse earnedhim a controversial 21-day ban, apunishment which many considered tobe extremely harsh, especially whencompared to the 12 days given toRichard Johnson in similarcircumstances a month earlier. “I wasshocked,” Jake admitted. “It was myfault, but I thought I might get aboutfour days.”

“The time actually went quite quickly,”he added, and there were plenty ofplaudits for the teenager when hereturned to the fray nearly seven weekslater and, on his first ride back,triumphed at Plumpton on Ringa Bayto register his initial success underRules.

Despite the fact that his motherLeanne runs a riding school, theBourton Vale Equestrian Centre, Jakeshowed minimal interest in horses forsome years. Football was his all-consuming pastime until boredom setin during the summer and he neededsomething else to occupy his time.

He started pony racing at the age ofnine, winning just one, but beingplaced on many occasions, during hisfive years in the sport.

He began riding out for DavidBridgwater, with whom Leanne hadhad horses in training, when he was12, and eight months ago joined theyard, where he lives in staffaccommodation, full-time. "He's goodto work for, and very supportive," Jakesays of his boss.

He had his first ride between the flagson his sixteenth birthday, finishingrunner-up at Maisemore onSmugglers' Run at Maisemore Park,and he opened his account on thesame horse three weeks later at

Paxford. The partnership went on tocontest the Connolly's Red Mills finalat Cheltenham, in which they camehome sixth of the eight to complete,and they filled the same position in the2m1f AGA Dual Control Hunters'Chase at Stratford.

At 6'2", he has no current thoughts ofturning Conditional, but is hoping topick up more Point-to-Point contactsonce he is able to travel further afieldto ride out. He is still a few short ofthe 20 rides necessary before he canapply for a Category ‘B' licence, but isplanning to go on the course once hereaches the magic number.

He has two booked rides for DavidBryant at Great Trethew on Sunday,and at the moment he goes to AndrewCampbell's yard, but is currentlyreliant on a moped as his mode oftransport. He has been saving hard fora car, and is hoping that theacquisition of a Skoda from a workcolleague will be in place for hisseventeenth birthday at the end of themonth.

Hedley Webb, 26, opened his accountin the Novice Riders’ contest atDidmarton on his Loose Preformer,who was purchased privately fromMichael Hawker and had won theMembers’ race on the track when inhis ownership 12 months earlier.

Somerton-based Hedley, whoqualified as a farrier two years ago,had just four rides last season onKilling Me Softly, and this was hisinitial ride of the current campaign.Prior to taking up racing he did a lotof show-jumping and also plenty ofhunting, including field-mastering forthe Taunton Vale.

He has been helped by JohnnyFarrelly, and he has used the gallopsbelonging to Kevin Bishop, PhilipHobbs and Alex Dunn. He is lookingto run Loose Preformer again in twoor three weeks’ time.

Great Trethew was the venue for theinitial victory of 19-year-old SeanHoulihan, who won the Confined onthe Gordon Chambers-trainedMinella Ranger.

Sean, who comes from a racingfamily and had a handful of ridesbetween the flags in Ireland, has beenbased with Philip Hobbs for 18months. It was Irish Pointing handlerPat Breen, for whom Sean had beenriding out, who gave him a contact at

the Bilbrook yard, and he had his firstride in Britain exactly 364 days ago, atTreborough Hill.

He is hoping to get his Category ‘B’licence before too long, and wouldlike to eventually turn Conditional.Although nearly six feet tall he caneasily do 9st10lbs.

Many novice riders might havepanicked when approaching the finalfence with such experiencedcampaigners as Paddy Gerety andAlex Edwards in hot pursuit, but notJemima Cope, who calmly pushed outSaphir Des Bois to record her firstsuccess in the Confined at Bangor.Saphir Des Bois is trained by GaryHanmer for the jockey’s grandmotherDorothy.

Jemima, 24, who had eight rides lastseason, is a physiotherapist –“Human, but I might look at doinghorses in the future,” she laughed.Her father Michael was a winningPoint rider, and her aunt, Dianne, isthe entries’ secretary for the NorthStaffordshire’s Easter fixture.

It was a red letter day at Ampton forDicky Collinson, who notched up hisfirst treble on a trio trained byAndrew Pennock. He won theConditions race on Play The Ace, theBonhams’ Men’s Open on King High,and the Maiden on Black Glen Boy.

Dicky opened his account on RussianFriend at Thorpe in 2004, and histally now stands at 29, including twounder Rules.

"Ella Darwin, 26, enjoyed success ononly her second ride when taking theLadies' Open at Godstone on BehindThe Scenes, owned and trained byAndrew Coveney, for whom she hasworked since moving to the SouthEast area.

She grew up near Middleham, whereshe rode out for Joss Saville, andfollowing a move to Gloucestershireworked for John Gallagher. "I lovedbeing in a flat yard, but was too heavyto ever ride on the flat," she laughed,"and to ride in a Point-to-Point wasjust a dream." She relocated to Sussexwhen meeting farrier Joe Gillings, towhom she gets married later in theyear.

The target now for Behind TheScenes is Penshurst, where his owneris Clerk of the Course, in afortnight's time."

Other first successes at the weekendwere recorded by 21-year-old ChelseaJennings on Tony Dinozzo in theLadies’ Open at CharltonHorethorne, and Craig Hoggart, 38,in the Men’s Open at Charm Park onMy Old Piano.

Who was capturing the action last weekend?A hectic weekend with no less than 12snappers in action, starting at KingstonBlount on Saturday where a host ofphotographers were out in force, includingNeale Blackburn, Phil Britt and JulieDrewett. The latter also took in her secondmeeting of the weekend at Godstone’s MidSurrey Farmers on Sunday. NealeBlackburn was also at two meetings as hemade the journey to Ampton for theSuffolk fixture.

Elsewhere, Garthorpe regular NicoMorgan was on hand at the Cottesmorewhere he was joined by David Jones Media.Meanwhile, Alun Sedgmore was atLlangrynach for the Brecon & Talybontwhilst Sweet Photography and AlastairJohnstone travelled to Bangor for theSir W. W. Wynn’s card.
