BARBER’S LARKHILLDOMINANCE CONTINUESThe second classic of the season, theCoronation Gold Cup Mens Open atLarkhill, went the way of Will Biddickand Benedictus, yet another success atthe course for trainer Jack Barber. Theten-year-old had previously pulled-upon his first three visits to Larkhill, butafter following up his victory on hisseasonal bow with another Open winon Sunday, he is now two from two atthe course this season.Joe O’Shea saddled a two-prongedattack in hope of landing theprestigious prize and it was the lessfancied King Fontaine who got thebetter of Executive Benefit to fill thesecond and third placings respectively.

Earlier in the day Biddick and Barberhad landed the Restricted thanks toWillow Bird who was having his firstouting of the year and won in thegrade at the first time of asking. Thiscontinued Barber’s domination at thecourse this season; the young handlerhas sent out 16 runners this term, saddling eight winners and fourrunners-up, a quite remarkable recordI’m sure you’ll agree.Elsewhere on the card My Floraensured Barber didn’t have it all hisown way on the day by building on apromising return to Pointing withvictory in the Ladies Open for jockeyHannah Watson and trainer Tor

Collins – it was great to hear the marewas back to winning ways and it willbe interesting to see how she faresafter a nice confidence boosting win.The South-East season also gotunderway at weekend courtesy ofGodstone’s first of two Southdown &Eridge fixtures. There was certainlypromising signs with plenty ofrunners, included the divided OpenMaiden which attracted two double-figure fields.Alan Hill’s Consigliere was one of thestar names on show and he didn’t failto deliver with a second win in asmany starts in the Mens Open. JoeHill was again aboard to do thesteering and a trip to Cheltenham nowbeckons for the ex-David Pipe chaser.Citizens Arrest also made it two fromtwo for the season for his novice riderAlice Stevens. This time the pairstepped up to Open company andlanded the Ladies feature, getting thebetter of the marginally more fancied,Wor Rom.Philip Hall is a regular face in theSouth East and he began the area’snew campaign with a double, firstlypartnering Will Fight (Club MembersConditions) before steeringDunloughin (Hunt Members) tovictory on the final race of the card.Adding to two other placed finishes itwas certainly a promising start to theseason for the experienced rider.

The third and final meeting of theweekend came at Brocklesby Park andit was Oliver Greenall andThreapwood who took the featureMixed Open race. The gallant 13-year-old My Old Piano came home insecond, and last year’s winner CourtRed Handed could only manage a 3rdplace finish 12 months on.Tom Weston’s excellent start to theseason also continued; he partneredStonefield to victory in the Division 1of the Open Maiden meaning Tomhas now trained six winners from 11runners this season.Unfortunately Cottenham’s CambridgeUniversity Draghounds meeting wasclaimed by the weather and whilstorganisers had originally hoped to re-schedule in the coming weeks, thishasn’t been possible and the meetinghas been cancelled. On a different note, last week weteamed-up with Hiho Silver to giveyou all the chance of winning £90worth of jewellery; if you didn’t enter, don’t panic, you can do so this weekby answering thequestion correctlyon page 12.Remember,you’ve got tobe in it, TOWIN IT!!Ben Roe,Editor

OBITUARY - MICHAEL DUNby Peter BurgonPoint-to-Point enthusiasts across theNorth were shocked to learn thatMichael Dun, 54, had died suddenly athome last Sunday morning, February1st, less than twenty four hours aftercommentating at the rearranged WestPercy fixture at Alnwick, where he hadbeen in typically good form.

His association with pointing startedas a jockey in 1976, riding his firstwinner that year on Carndonagh in theLauderdale Hunt Members Race atMosshouses. He won the NorthernArea Men's Jockeys Championship in1979 and 1993, and his career tallyincluded 52 between the flags and 14in hunter chases.

Unor provided Dun with his lasthunter chase victory at Perth in May1994, while his final Point-to-Pointsuccess came on Peter Russell's TwoFor One in a division of theBerwickshire Maiden at Friars Haughon 25th February 1995.

One of his career highlights wasprovided by Norman Dalgetty's mare,

Nijanna on 25th April 1987 when thepartnership landed the second divisionof the Heart Of All England Maiden

Hunters' Chase at Hexham, beatingMystic Music by four lengths. He also

finished 4th on Davy Blake in the1995 Cheltenham Foxhunters behind

Fantus.

He was narrowly denied a fairytale

winner on his final ride when KingsLane was beaten a head in theLauderdale Members Race on 7th May

2000.

More recently, Michael had deployed

his knowledge and understanding ofPoint-to-Point racing as an excellent

commentator at the majority offixtures on the Northern Area circuit, and he was also an enthusiastic

supporter of his daughter, Charlotte'sfledgling riding career.

He will be greatly missed by all whoknew him and condolences go out to

wife, Jane along with children, Grahamand Charlotte, and parents, Robin and

Sheila Dun.

Riding Ravethebrave in theFoxhunters’ at Cheltenham last year.Even though he bled and pulled upwith half a mile to run, the buzz ofriding in a big race was amazing. Is there a ride you look back onand think “could have donebetter?” I always look back at everyride, assess it with my parents, andthink what I could have done better.

my

dad mainly, but also for Lynn Redmanas she trains down the road, so I ridefor her a lot.Who has been most influential onyour riding career so far? Definitelymy dad, but I’ve also been very luckyto receive a lot of help from JamesTudor. He helps me with my ridingand how to improve every time I ride.Which are your favourite courses? And for what reasons? KingstonBlount is my favourite by a mile fromany other course. It’s only a mile downthe road and dad runs it. I have alsobeen lucky enough to ride five winnersand rarely have a bad ride there. I bought her off a girl wholives down the road who told me that Ihad to call her Butch!Name your perfect night in andperfect night out: In would be anynight I can have a big dinner and adrink in front of the TV. For how long have you beentraining?I’ve done a couple, off and on, overthe years but this is my third season oftraining seriously.

Where are you based?Highclere, just south of Newbury.

Do you combine training withanother job or profession?Mum etc.!

What training facilities do you haveavailable? At home we have a wood chip roundgallop and a grass schooling strip andwe use the Jockey Club facilities atLambourn on a regular basis.

How many horses do you train?5 currently.

Do you train for just yourself andfamily or for other Owners?Mostly our own (three of which are ina Racing Club), but we also train onefor Jamie Snowden.

Are you from a racing background?Yes. My grandfather bred Flat horsesin Yorkshire and was a keen Point-to-Point jockey, as was his father. Earliergenerations of my family bred a fewClassic winners but my grandfatherwas much more low key.

What was the first winner you sentout – name, owner, rider, date, course?Teller Of Tales, owned and trained byme and ridden by Vicky Flood on 29Feb 2004 at Larkhill

Of which horse performance areyou most proud?Definitely Carrigkerry winning atGarthorpe in 2013. He was very greenthat first season and luckily has grownup masses since then.

Did you race-ride before youstarted training? No, I was passionate about huntingand had a great horse called GeneralBarton who I intended to race butsadly we didn’t make it.

How did you start training and whohas been most influential on yourtraining career? We’ve always had hunters and DaiWilliams, having got (husband)Richard racing, encouraged me totrain. Dai has been a huge supportover the years and gave us MountBenger who (daughter) Page had herfirst win on. I still regularly talk tohim.

Which jockeys do you useregularly?Page rides most but we have a coupleof novice riders helping us this seasonwho we hope to give rides to.

What car do you drive?Landrover Defender.

What kind of music do you like?Soul music and anything that makesme feel happy.

What are your favourite films andTV programmes?Films – The Big Chill and Red, TV –currently Elementary and Hawaii 5-0.

Describe your perfect night in andperfect night out:Night in – roast dinner with all thefamily; night out – in the pub afterracing.

What do you do to take a breakfrom training – any hobbies orfavourite holiday destinations? We have polo ponies too, so not muchtime for a break but we try to get outto Jersey for a few days in the summer.

Who would be your ideal travellingcompanions to the races? My dog and my iPod.

Who are your biggest heroes – in orout of racing? My grandparents.

What has been your funniestincident at the races?Tamara King and Page fell at Barburya couple of seasons ago, StevenAstaire came up asking: ‘How is she?’ Ianswered: ‘She’s injured her leg badlyand I’m looking for the vet to stitch itup’ – he was actually asking after Page!

Which particular horse would youlike to train – in Points and underRules?I don’t covet any horses but there areplenty I admire. Smad Place is acurrent favourite.

If you hadn’t taken up training, what would you have done instead?I long for more time to paint andsculpt, but I would probably havemore sheep.

Which horses do you have at themoment that you would say havegood potential?Carrigkerry and our new one,Overburn, who is a full sister to CorkCitizen.

What ambitions do you have inracing? To train the highest rated amateurtrained English hunter. Failing that, winning either theFoxhunters’ (Cheltenham) or the FoxHunters’ (Aintree) wouldn’t be bad.

What are your favourite coursesand meetings – and why?I always have a soft spot for whereverwe have had a winner.

What do you consider to be thebiggest challenges for Point-to-Point trainers?Definitely the weather, especially as allours live out 24/7!

What are your opinions on thechanges in Point-to-Pointing inrecent years?Point-to-Pointing has moved forwardhugely recently; we must give it time towork out what has been for the goodand what might still need attention.

What developments do you thinkwould benefit the sport in thefuture?I would like to see hunts/Point-to-Point committees and owners/trainersspend more time getting to know eachother.

Rex Dingle could not have made abetter start to his Pointing career, scoring on his first ride, Rather Curious,at Charing in 2014. The winner wastrained by David Phelan, a man with animpressive record in giving talentedyoungsters an opportunity, as is evincedby the exploits of such as TomCannon, Josh Moore and BrendanPowell, all of whom are nowestablished professionals.

Rex, now just 17, hunted alongside hissiblings, and started pony racing at theage of nine, although his initial attemptin that sphere was not quite soimpressive."I had a really hairy pony, and finished a furlong behindeverything else," he laughed.

He was, though, to find a more ablepartner in Tarka Two, and their threevictories enabled him to become the2012 South East area Pony Racingchampion.

His targets for this season are to winthe area novice title, and to ride in aHunter Chase. He has alreadycompleted the Category ‘A’ course,"But there wasn’t any point in metaking out the licence last year because Iknew I wasn’t going to compete underRules."

Unlike many of his contemporarieswho eagerly accept any mount they areoffered, Rex is prepared to be patient."I haven’t done much racing yet, so Ileave it to David to give me what rideshe thinks."

He has, however, had the experience ofa few weeks spent at Seven Barrowsjust over a year ago, when he rode out, among others, Vaniteux.

He goes to the Phelan yard nearAshford, a 25 minute journey fromhome, three days a week, and is lookingforward to the time when he has hisown transport - he is currently havingdriving lessons.

In the meantime, he is combining hisstable work with a business studies’course at college in Canterbury, but itis in the equestrian world that he ishoping his future will lie. If he can goeven halfway to matching theachievements of some of the otherPhelan proteges, he will be a rider tokeep an eye on.

CONNOLLY’S RED MILLS PRECISION NUTRITION INTERMEDIATE SERIESSouth Wold at Brocklesby Park & Combined Services at Larkhill“See you at the start at Cheltenham!”were the prophetic words from TomMcClorey (whose mount Legal Legendhad booked his place in the Connolly’sRed Mills final by finishing second inthe Intermediate at Larkhill inJanuary), to George Greenock prior tothe qualifier at Brocklesby Park onSunday.George did not let his colleague down, giving Empire Builder a positive front-running ride to come home a long wayclear of the field. A trip to PrestburyPark is now on the cards for the nine-year-old, who is owned by George’smother, Countess [Viv] Cathcart, andwho, opined trainer Gerald Bailey, willdefinitely improve for the run.“He’s always been a decent horse,”continued Gerald, “and he could win afew Novice Chases if he went underRules. He’s better running from thefront, then George doesn’t get in amuddle!” he grinned.Empire Builder, who had finishedrunner-up in the correspondingcontest 12 months earlier, wasdescribed by his handler as “a realgentleman, whose only quirk is that hesweats and sweats when he’s on thelorry.”It was a first ride of the currentcampaign for George, who works forLycetts Insurance Brokers inFakenham and keeps fit by running inhis lunch hour. The runner-up Minella Friend (TomWeston) was having his initial run

between the flags for William andAngela Rucker, for whom he wasplaced over hurdles after beingpurchased for £90,000 in 2013. Hehad previously won a Point andBumper in Ireland. Both he and third-placed Our Crusade(Ed Glassonbury) were reported tohave been unsuited by the soft ground. The latter is an unlikely entry for theCheltenham final, trainer OliverGreenall considering him to be “notquite good enough.” His target is theExeter Racecourse Intermediate Finalon 5 May, for which he qualified atChipley Park in January.Fourth home was Susie Lyon-Heap’sowner-bred Mister Tiger (JoshGuerriero), for whom qualificationwas the main objective. After scoring ahat-trick in 2011/12, he has beensidelined with a leg problem and washaving only his second outing sincethen, the first being in the Connolly’sIntermediate at Barbury on December 7.He is the last foal of ThamesdownTootsie, who was unbeaten in fiveLadies’ Opens in 1995 when partneredby Susie’s daughter, Tory Lyon.Hunter Chasing could now be on theagenda, said trainer Sam Allwood, whobroke him in as a four-year-old.Just four of the eight runnerscompleted, with the two marketleaders, Soleil D’Avril and Raydini, both parting company with theirriders.

Larkhill was the venue for theweekend’s other Intermediate contest,a Novice Riders’ event for which thefirst two were eligible to be entered inthe final.Victory went to Lucy Wheeler onToby Hunt’s Connolly’s-fuelled DoneA Runner who, all being well, willdefinitely get an entry in the final, but, said trainer Alan Hill, he needs quickground so would not take his chance ifit came up soft.He and Toby are under no illusion thatthey have a superstar on their hands, but the owner is keen to show hisappreciation to the sponsors and at thesame time enjoy a good night out.

Alan, who has won the last twochampionships with Harbour Courtand Sharp Suit respectively, emphasised the value to the sport ofthe company’s sponsorship. “They areextremely generous, both during theseason and on the night itself,” hestressed, “so we should do everythingwe can to help and support them.”Runner-up Ballycassel was partneredby his owner, Guy Disney, who rideswith an artificial limb after losing hisright leg from the knee down whenserving in Helmand Province in 2009.Guy, who rode the first of his fivewinners in 2003, was granted hislicence again this year, and one of histargets is to ride in the Grand MilitaryGold Cup at Sandown in March.

TRAINER TALKCHRIS LOGGINGiven that I was expecting to meet Northamptonshire trainer ChrisLoggin to talk horses rather than football, and considering that he’s along-standing Wolverhampton Wanderers fan, it initially came as asurprise that he peppered our conversation with references to otherteams! writes Jake Exelby*

Page 19: Go Pointing | 10 February 2015

#gopointing 19 www.pointtopoint.co.uk

“We’ve got to make sure we encouragethe Accrington Stanleys as well as theManchester Uniteds”, was Chris’spithy summary when I asked him theone thing he would do to improve thesport of Point-to-Pointing. “To behonest, I don’t think there’s muchwrong with our sport at the moment”,he affirmed. “I realise that numbersare down, but we’ve got 2,500 horsesracing for next to nothing, so we can’tbe doing too badly!”

But Chris is a strong believer in gettingon board those who aren’t able to buya string of horses. An example of thiswould be Trevor Rose, a first-timeowner, who has Towering Run inChris’s yard at Hinton-in-the-Hedgesnear Brackley. “Trevor and his family –including daughter Tash, who’s workedwith me for five or six years now –have been supporters of the sport fora long time and they’ve always wanteda horse to run in their name andcolours. Now they’ve got one.”

Towering Run was previously ownedby former Point-to-Point Authorityboard member Steven Astaire.“Steven’s one of my newer owners,”joked Chris. “He’s only been with mesince 1986! His first horse with mewas our home-bred Royal Roussell. He’s been very loyal – there’s been atleast one horse owned by Steven in myyard ever since.”

The best known horse Chris hastrained for Steven Astaire is Yahoo, who famously finished second toDesert Orchid in the 1989Cheltenham Gold Cup, although it’sfair to say that he was past his primewhen he joined the Loggin yard aged14. “Steven often reminds me that thenearest I came to training a double waswhen Yahoo, ridden by him, dead-heated with Button Your Lip and JaneEnderby at Tweseldown.”

This year, Steven has two horses withChris – multiple winning mare CutlassSilver, who “wants fast ground at theend of the season” according to thetrainer, and new recruit Typhon deGuye, “potentially the best we’ve got”,who is likely to run in Ladies Opensand Hunter Chases. Both horses willbe ridden by the “under-rated andunderused” Claire Wills.

Alongside Cutlass Silver, the best-known horse in the stable is OneWish, owned by long-standingsupporter of Point-to-Pointing

Richard West. “He’s been involvedsince the 1960s”, confirmed Chris,“and he’s had good horses with meincluding Quite a Miss and CelticSeason.” One Wish is the ride of SamDavies-Thomas, “if he can pullhimself away from the mirror – andyou can quote me on that!” the traineradds cheekily.

The other horses in the yard are Bit ofa Barney, Black Sceptre, Stapleton andSteel Away J. Stapleton, owned byEmma and Albert Keir, won a MaidenRace at Mollington in 2013. “He didn’trun in 2014 but we’re aiming him at aRestricted at Larkhill in March.” BlackSceptre belongs to former jockey TashMcKim and her partner Liam Whelan, who is Chris’s farrier. The four-year-old, who has run four times on theFlat, is targeting a Maiden Race atKingston Blount.

As well as farming 450 acres withbrother Mervyn – “I’ve got a big backgarden” – and training eight Pointers –“if you asked me how many I’d wantideally, I’d say four!” - Chris serves asPPORA representative for the SouthMidlands Area. He has firm views onthe need to frame race conditions toattract the one-horse owners, such asTrevor and Tash Rose, as well as thebig yards. Take the FarmersBloodhounds meeting at Whitfield, forwhich he serves on the committee.

“We’ve replaced the Mens Open witha Conditions Race, for eight-year-oldsand over who haven’t won for twoyears. Mens Opens are oftenuncompetitive at that time of year andit’s important that we have races forthe smaller owner. Of course, we needthe big names – they attract thecrowds – but we need them to betaking each other on rather thanavoiding each other.” Chris is a big fanof Conditions Races and oneintriguing suggestion was to have asmall number limited to horses whohave never exceeded a certain ratingunder Rules. Food for thought forRace Planning Committees.

Chris was also on the Committeeresponsible for the introduction of aScurry Race at the FarmerBloodhounds Point-to-Point. Sowhat’s a Scurry Race? “It’s for happyhunters who don’t want to jump toomuch,” enthuses Chris. (Note topotential jockeys: there are actually 11fences!) “Any type of horse can run, aslong as they’re 18 or under, and their

rider is 16 or over. It’s not run underBHA rules, so you don’t need alicence, but you do need to be insuredand participation is at the discretion ofthe senior master.”

I asked Chris why one well-knownfigure in the sport has described himas the person in the South Midlandswho does the most to promote Point-to-Pointing. “I suppose it’s due to mylongevity. I can remember when PatTollit was riding horses like Epistleand Commando Assault under hermaiden name of Pat Rushton,” herecalled. “I gave up riding when myfather died to train and run the farm. Then when the supply of home-bredswas drying up in 1986, Steven Astairecame along. One of his first horses,Rocamist, was my last ever ride – atMollington. He was a lovely horse, butwouldn’t go a yard for me!”

So what was Chris like as a rider? “Toofat and pretty useless,” he confesses. “Inever won under NH rules and justscraped into double figures in Points.”The best horse I rode was RoughCount – I won four races on him in1974, the highlight being his Maidenrace at Kingston Blount, where I beatJim Wilson and John Thorne intosecond and third. Now they weregood riders.”

The Loggin yard is a close-knitoperation. As well as Chris and Tash, Imet brother Mervyn, who formerlytrained useful Pointers EbullientEquiname and Tender Tangle at aseparate yard in the village, and ErnieBoyles. “Ernie has been with thefamily for 53 years,” Chris tells me,“and he’s invaluable. He builds andmaintains the fences, looks after theground and helps muck out the horses. It’s down to him that our schoolingfences are so popular – we havebetween 300 and 400 schoolingsessions every year.” And when I askChris about his recent highlights in thesport, he doesn’t name a winner, butthe day he took three horses toWhitfield last season and they all wonbest-turned out awards, thanks toTash.

I’ll leave the last word to theloquacious Chris, who gives me whatcould be an appropriate epitaph: “Iconsider myself lucky to have horsesto train. I take what’s thrown at me,and try and make the most of whatI’ve got.”
