BIDDICK BANGS IN ANOTHERFOUR-TIMERMost jockeys can only dream of riding afour-timer during their career, but not ifyou’re Will Biddick - he fired in hissecond of the season at Cotley onSunday...but let’s face it, Will Biddick isn’tmost jockeys, is he? He’s in a class of hisown.Ask The Weatherman (Club MembersConditions), Benedictus (Mixed Open),Whataknight (Restricted) and TrumpetMaster (Open Maiden), the first three forJack Barber and the latter for TeresaClark, provided Biddick’s winning ridesand continued his bloodless assault onhis fourth consecutive ChampionGentleman Rider’s crown.Bradley Gibbs was also in red-hot format the weekend, riding three winners andthree seconds on the six-race Glamorgancard at Ystradowen. The highlight of thefeat was arguably victory aboardMedicinal Compound in the MixedOpen, but wins on Captain Scarlett(Hunt Members) and My Coranna(Restricted) also played their part in amemorable afternoon.Switching to trainers in form, GeraldBailey’s string continued to prove theirwell-being as the handler saddled his fifthconsecutive winner at Garthorpe onSunday. The winning run began with adouble at Brafield last weekend, beforeEmpire Builder kept the ball rolling bylanding the Mens Open at Horseheath

on Saturday. Gunmoney, who had wonat Brafield seven days earlier, went inagain when claiming the Mixed Open atGarthorpe, before the highly promisingFearthedark won an above averageRestricted on the same card to make itfive wins in a row for the stable. There was also a double at Garthorpe forFred Henderson. The pick of hiswinning rides came on Otto The Great, for his father James, as the pair battledgamely to a narrow success in thePPORA Club Members for NoviceRiders. Dream Mistress, who is trainedby Chris Bealby, provided Fred with amore straightforward winner by dottingup in the Open Maiden to complete hisbrace.Sticking with doubles, Man Of Steel(Club Members Conditions) and Done ARunner (PPORA Club Members forNovice Riders) both carried Toby Hunt’scolours to victory for Alan Hill. Aspecial mention has to go to the winningrider of the latter, Go Pointing’s veryown Lucy Wheeler, who has now wonon the horse four times.Colonel Iain (Club Members) andRonnie Lawson (Intermediate) recordedtheir third consecutive successes of theseason at Horseheath on Saturday. Bothtrained by John Ferguson and ridden byhis son, James, the pair have brightfutures ahead of them and you wouldn’tbet against their respective winningsequences continuing in the near future.

Riding your first winner has to be one ofthe most memorable achievements forany jockey, but to better that byfollowing it up with another victory inthe very next race is quite an achievementand surely something Charlotte Dunwon’t be forgetting in a hurry. The 19-year-old, who works for Lucinda Russell, rode her first winner on Rolecarr (LadiesOpen) before guiding Farm Pixie tovictory in the Open Maiden. Two familiar faces who know their wayto the winners’ enclosure are RosiesPeacock and My Old Piano; they didwhat they do best again at the weekendby scoring at Maisemore Park andAskham Bryan College respectively. Theformer recorded his 25th Point-to-Pointvictory, whilst the latter went one better,it being his 26th. Full credit has to gotheir connections for consistently gettingthem to the racecourse in winning form.Looking forward to the busiest period ofthe season, there are no fewer than 23meetings taking place over the EasterPeriod, so plenty of action for usPointing fans to take in. I hope all of youattending your localmeetings up anddown the countryhave a great dayout. Fingerscrossed that thesun shines!Ben Roe,Editor

Words of advice from professionaljockeys proving so popular with point-to-point riders

Former professional jockeys areproving a hit as tutors for currentBritish Point-to-Point riders.

Following the securing of funding bythe Point-to-Point Authority for aseries of workshops, the first, a lessonwith Carl Llewellyn at Stratfordracecourse, sold out within hours. However, there are still places availableat locations around England withMark Bradburne, Brian Harding, RodiGreene and Phil Kinsella, plus acourse walk before racing with TimReed.

All the tutors were successful jockeysand are now part of the BritishHorseracing Authority’s JockeyCoaching Programme – they areUKCC qualified in line with othermainstream sports.

The aim of the workshops is to enablePoint-to-Point riders to improve theirrace riding, gain insights on diet andfitness, and pick up tips on how toreduce risks in a race – and ridewinners! The cost is £10 a lesson, butthey are free to members of the Point-to-Point Owners & RidersAssociation.

Mark Bradburne says: “No matter howfit young riders are, they cannot be fitenough. My aim is to help ridersunderstand their capabilities so theycan finish a race, meaning they canhelp a horse in a finish. The fitter arider the more flexible they are and thebetter able they are to think clearly.”

Tim Reed says: “Most riders, whenthey start taking part in Point-to-Points, get a UR before an F, because acommon fault is to sit too far forwardand to forget to slip the reins. For mylesson – walking the course at Tabley –I will be talking generally about race

riding, but also pointing out that theshortest route is not always on theinside, depending on bends, markers, and whether the course has been racedon.”

In addition to Carl Llewellyn’sworkshop in Stratford this Thursdayother sessions will take place at:

• Oaksey House, Lambourn, April 13,Mark Bradburne

• Penrith, Cumbria, May 1, BrianHarding

• Wellington, Somerset, May 6, RodiGreene

• Middleton Key Centre, Yorkshire,May 11, Phil Kinsella

• Tabley racecourse, Cheshire, May17, Tim Reed

Riders who wish to join a workshopshould contact Abi Stock at thePPORA on 01789 415598 or [email protected]

Coneygree, winner of the 2015 BetfredCheltenham Gold Cup, has beenconfirmed to parade before racing atthe Cazenove Capital Point-to-Point atLockinge, on Easter Bank HolidayMonday, 6 April.

Trained by Mark and Sarah Bradstock atLetcombe Bassett near to the Lockingeracecourse, Coneygree became the firstnovice racehorse to win the blue ribandof jump racing in 41 years at theCheltenham Festival two weeks agowhen ridden by Nico De Boinville. Thestable star for the Bradstock's will bemaking a special appearance beforeracing for visitors at the Point-to-Point.

Sarah Bradstock commented: "ThePoint-to-Point circuit plays an importantrole to the grass roots of horseracing

and we are delighted to be supporting it.In fact I rode my first Point-to-Pointwinner at the fixture on board LeanForward, so the racecourse holds aspecial place in my heart. Coneygree isin fine form after his Gold Cup win andis rather enjoying all the attention".

Richard Manners, Chairman of thePoint-to-Point, added: "We are verygrateful to the Bradstock's for agreeingto parade Coneygree. It's a real coup forthe fixture and hunt that they will bejoining us ahead of a fantastic daysracing at Lockinge".

Visitors to this year's Point-to-Point willbe treated to two pony races in additionto six further thoroughbred jump races,as well as plenty of Easter familyentertainment off the track, including a

hound parade, terrier racing and afarmers market.

Point-to-Pointing is regarded as thegrass roots of horseracing and hashelped nurture the careers of numeroussuccessful jockeys and horses. RichardDunwoody graduated through thePoint-to-Point circuit as a young lad andwent on to be crowned champion jumpjockey three times in the professionalranks.

The fixture at Lockinge is an importantfundraiser for the Old Berks Hunt. TheHunt dates back to 1830 in its presentform but the hunt hosted its first race atthe current Lockinge location in 1953and has become a local sporting andsocial institution ever since.

AVON VALE at LARKHILLSaturday, 28 Marchby Brian & Gill ArmstrongTrueflyingcolours took Larkhill's trulyrun Ladies Open in a very fast time(5m 52s). The Stuart Penny-trainednine-year-old led over the last threefences under Leanda Tickle after amile-long duel with market rivalSeigneur Des Bois (Ally Stirling).Connections reported thatTrueflyingcolours, now a two-timeLarkhill winner since his purchase twoyears ago, has benefited from theapplication of cheekpieces this season.

Bedrock Fred and Hincheslea Moorboth recorded their fourth coursesuccesses. The former led throughoutthe final circuit of the Men's Openunder Danny Burton. Bred, ownedand trained by El Tanner and herpartner, Dave Weston, Bedrock Fredwas making his first appearance sincefalling at Cottenham on 30 November."He damaged his neck at Cottenham, has had treatment to remove sarcoidsand we've been waiting for fastground," summed up El.

Hincheslea Moor and jockey DanielSansom were clear throughout the lastmile of the Conditions contest. Thewin took the eight-year-old to the head

of the current season's Larkhill BestHorse Award standings. "He canhandle most surfaces here, as he lovesLarkhill so much, but he's gone verywell on today's quick surface," feltNew Forest owner-trainer JamesYoung.

Charles Whittaker's Chinatown Boydeservedly opened his account underAlice Mills in the Maiden after sevenplaced efforts in eight outings.Chinatown Boy made all the runningand had enough left to hold DarrenEdwards' challenge aboard favourite,Crackacan.

Will Hickman retained his 100% -three from three - record for Chievelyowner-trainer Tim Underwood aboardIntermediate winnerKnowhentofoldem. The eight-year-oldIrish purchase tracked rivals BailyBridge and What About Will for muchof the contest, but only grabbed thelead when the latter swerved on theflat after jumping the last in a clearlead.

Wak A Turtle turned the Restrictedinto a procession under JamieThomas. "He won his Maiden here inFebruary and is ideally suited to shortsharp tracks," felt trainer Kayley

Woollacott. Stratford's May SubaruRestricted Final is on the cards.

James McNeile, 55, achieved his firstcompetitive win aboard the LauraThomas-trained Qianshan Leader inthe Hunt race after two previouswalkovers in the same contest. The 11-year-old disputed with the favourite,Mohawk Warrior, for much of thecontest before striding clear over thelast four fences.

BERWICKSHIREat FRIARS HAUGHSaturday, 28 Marchby Peter BurgonCharlotte Dun, 19, had an afternoonto remember as the former AnnHamilton-trained geldings Rolecarrand Farm Pixie provided her with thefirst two winners of her career inSaturday's Berwickshire Hunt Point-to-Point fixture at Friars Haugh,Kelso.

Rolecarr and Tasheba had the WatsonSeeds Ladies Open Race betweenthem from four out and it was theformer who forged clear from two outto score by seven lengths. The 12-year-old winner, trained by Dun's mother,Jane, was given to them last February

after a long career under Rules whichsaw him score five times at the nearbyKelso National Hunt track as well astwice at Hexham. The victory wasespecially poignant as he carried thecolours of Dun's late father, Michael, the Northern Area's principal racecommentator until his untimely deatheight weeks ago, aged 54.

Farm Pixie completed Dun's red letterday in the Meadowhead-Parks.co.uk.Open Maiden Race. Making his 25thcareer start, the nine-year-old wasalways in the front rank but looked introuble when Pampanito went fivelengths clear approaching two out. However, Dun didn't panic andconjured a renewed effort from hermount who easily reeled in the leaderbefore staying on strongly after the lastto score by two lengths. This was afirst training success for Blainslie-based Kathy Weir, wife of formerScotland Rugby International DoddieWeir and sister of Jane Dun, who wasgiven the gelding last August andpartnered him in a novice hunter trialat Duns the previous Sunday.

Dun, in her second year studyingAccountancy and Economics atHeriot Watt University, said: ''Hetravelled supremely well through therace, never made a mistake and stillhad plenty left in the tank at the finish.I should probably retire now when I'mon a high.''

A short-priced double on The Toftand Splendid Blue gave NickOrpwood a new personal bestseasonal tally of 12 and lifted his

career tally under all codes to 40, aswell as extending his lead over TomHamilton in the Northern Area MensJockeys Championship to 17 points.

The gallant Whatsthestoryman madevirtually all the running in the MortonFraser Open Maiden Race but was notas fluent at the last as The Toft, whoedged in front near the line to snatch ashort head verdict. Orpwood said ofthe Lucinda Russell-trained six-year-old Kayf Tara mare: ''She has come ona lot since her debut third here afortnight ago and will be even betteron softer ground.''

PUCKERIDGE at HORSEHEATHSaturday, 28 Marchby James CrispeClose finishes were the order of theday at Horseheath, near Haverhill, onSaturday with half of the six races atthe Puckeridge Point-to-Point decidedby less than a length - including boththe Open events.

In some ways it was a day to forget forOxfordshire trainer Alan Hill as heprovided the beaten odds-on favouritein each of those two tight Opens. However, as Hill rightly pointed outafterwards, a bad day is when one ofyour horses gets injured, rather thanthis meeting when his three runnersmanaged two seconds and a fourth.

Sharp Suit was the first of the Hillhotpots to come up short in theLadies Open race. A Cheltenhamhunter chase winner last season, he didnot travel or jump with any great zestand came up against a determined rivalin It Was Me.

The pair were virtually level crossingthe final obstacle but It Was Me, whois trained at Badlingham, nearNewmarket, by Nick Wright and wasbeautifully ridden by CareyWilliamson, who found a bit extra toscore by three-quarters of a length.

Half an hour later and the Mens Openwitnessed an almost carbon copyfinish with the Hill representative,Ravethebrave, going down by half alength to Empire Builder.

The winner, who may now go for theConnolly's Red Mills IntermediateHunter Chase Final at Cheltenham on

April 29th, is trained inNorthamptonshire by Gerald Baileybut is owned by Countess Cathcart, from Gateley, near Fakenham, and wasridden by her son, George Greenock.

The closing Restricted Race resulted inan even narrower victory withCurraigflemens, trained and ridden byDavid Kemp, from Croxton, nearThetford, just holding on by a neckfrom Biddles Bedouin.

Curraigflemens was following up hiscourse and distance victory last monthto complete a double at his local trackfor owner John Ridge, from LittleChishill, near Royston.

John Ferguson's day job is asBloodstock Adviser to SheikhMohammed al Maktoum, CrownPrince of Dubai, so he was unable tomake it to Horseheath as he hadweightier matters to attend to in theArabian Gulf, namely watching hisboss's Prince Bishop win the world'srichest race, the Dubai World Cup.

But that did not stop the Cowlinge(near Newmarket) trainer fromenjoying his second Pointing double inthree weeks, this time both ridden byhis son, James.

Both of the Ferguson victories wereregistered in emphatic style - firstColonel Iain (named after the jockey'sonlooking grandfather) in the ClubMembers race and then by RonnieLawson in the Intermediate Race.

Finally, Mr Raj, trained at Shenley inHertfordshire by Tom Gallagher, outspeeded Beat The Index from the

final fence to land the Maiden raceunder Tom Ellis.

BADSWORTH & BRAMHAMMOOR at ASKHAM BRYANCOLLEGESunday, 29 Marchby Charlotte RussellRacing took place at Yorkshire'snewest course at Askham BryanCollege on Sunday 22nd March, wherecompetitive racing was the order ofthe day and the Maiden race had to bedivided at declaration stage.

The day started with the WetherbyRacecourse and Conference CentreConfined Hunts Race where a field ofseven went to post. The race was runin the quickest time of the day, whichis quite remarkable considering noneof the jockeys had any experience ofthe course, but Chris Dawson showedwhy he has been area champion threetimes by guiding Sposalizio into firstplace. Riding a patient race he assertedon the final bend and went on to winby six lengths from Kings Lodge andWilliam Easterby in second andPertemps Networks a further fivelengths back in third ridden by CraigHoggart. Craig was deputising forJoanna Mason who broke her back ina fall at the Hurworth meeting lastSaturday. An operation was performedon Wednesday and she was present atthe meeting to give final instructions.

He deserved to win arestricted so I'm really pleased," saidMax Johnson. His win was madeslightly easier by the departure ofBurtredgipandgump at the final fencebut he already looked held at thispoint.

The hosts, Askham Bryan Collegesponsored the Mens Open race whereForce of Habit continued SarahDent's good vein of form, the trainerhaving won the Hurworth's equivalentlast week with Executive's Hall. "He'sgot stacks of ability, but needs cajolingalong," said Sarah. "He is very laidback and has a long stride so looks likehe isn't doing a lot. I'm not sure wherewe will go next but he has form overtwo miles and is quite versatile," sheadded. The winner was ridden by JohnDawson who beat his brother Chris

on Know The Rules by three lengthsand Zitenka finished four lengthsfurther back for William Easterby.

Division One of the CaddickConstruction Mens Open race saw MrMistopheles follow up on hisimpressive Point-to-Point debut lastweek to go two better and win thisunder Tommie Dowson. Hi Ho Juliowas once again the bridesmaid underChris Dawson and Twelveoclockhighput last week's unseat behind him tofinish third for William Easterby.

In Division Two, Shabach finallymanaged to get his head in front forWill Milburn, in a time four secondsquicker than the first division. "Hedeserved to win, he's learnt to settlethis season and he's a genuine horsebut I think cheek pieces just helpedget that bit more out of him at theend," reported the winning jockey."Grounds is the key to him too, heneeds it good or firmer," added Will.On Vacation pushed him to the linebut was one and half lengths furtherback under Richard Tierney andChantry Melody finished third forAndrew Bartlett.

Young Hurricane came out on top inthe Rudding Park Ladies Open Race.Ridden by Freya Brewer, the pair rode

a similar waiting race to that of theirCharm Park victory and he wasexpertly produced to win by fivelengths. "We were really pleased withhim," reported trainer Guy Brewer."He was good enough to win, despitenot really handling the track," headded. French Seventyfive battled onwell under Emma Todd to finishsecond by five lengths andBlackthirteen was third for JessGillam.

Only three turned out for the Dodson& Horrell PPORA Club Membersrace for novice riders and much of therunning was made by Scots Gaelic andFionn McSharry. Craig Hoggart wasonce again aboard My Old Piano whotook quite a hold and struggled forcover with only two other participants, however the pair were victoriousalthough the win was made easier bythe departure of Scots Gaelic at thelast. Although My Old Piano wasprobably going slighty better, ScotsGaelic was really putting it up to himuntil making a mistake at the finalfence. "We ran in the novice ridersrace because Craig didn't have a rideand it looked the easier option,"explained Steph Easterby, My OldPiano's trainer. EAST CORNWALLat GREAT TRETHEWSunday, 29 Marchby Granville TaylorThe worst of the rain relented duringthe afternoon but there was no respitefrom the near gale force wind at GreatTrethew, where the six bookmakerspresent operated from the cosy shelterof a small marquee.

The strength of the wind had causedproblems before the first race in whichthe last fence on the uphill section hadto be omitted when it provedimpossible to get the wings erected.Fortunately jockeys reported noadverse effects from the gusty wind inthis two and a half miles Maiden wonby Jimmy Frost's four-year-old ArtyBella. Bryony Frost was content tobide her time on the filly, who shookoff another previously un-raced

youngster in Applesolutely. "Mybrother Hadden bought her at Ascotlast June unbroken. Her grandam wasColonial Princess who won Point-to-Points. I have done a lot of work onher. She didn't make a mistake todayand I can't fault her guts," reported the19-year-old jockey.

Two progressive young Pointersfought out the finish of the MixedOpen. The favourite Blazing Whalewas struggling from the top of the hillas seven-year-olds Welstonedruid andWhenharrymetsally dominated theclosing stages. It was the RobertChanin trained Welstonedruid whosaw the trip out best after his mainrival blundered her chance away at thelast. "This is his first Open win. Hejust keeps galloping and will stay fourmiles," said the Thorverton trainer, intimating that Upcott Cross or FletePark could be next on the agenda. Thegelding was something of a chanceride for Tom Chanin, whose brotherIan normally has the ride. "I am juststanding in for Ian today because hehas gone to the Cotley," said thewinning rider.

Matt Hampton had to settle forsecond best on Whenharrymetsally, but reached the winner's enclosure inthe Intermediate thanks to BlindingLights. "He is not a speed horse butstays and we will probably go for theExeter Racecourse Final," remarkedthe winner's owner/trainer MarySanderson.

The Open Maiden for four to seven-year-olds attracted 12 runners and

went to a previously un-racedyoungster in six-year-old CailleachAnnie. The winner drew clear at thelast jump as her main pursuer Brandyand Red got tired. "I got her from JayLeahy in Cork as a three-year-old butshe is big and has taken time to cometo herself. She is a half sister to FearGlic who won over hurdles for me,"explained owner/trainer Jackie DuPlessis. The winner was ridden by 19-year-old David Noonan who is basedwith David Pipe. "I have now had sixPoint-to-Point winners and two underrules said the Irish born jockey.

Although based in Dorset withAnthony Honeyball, Harry Cobden iscurrently in a narrow lead (from DavidNoonan) for this year's Devon &Cornwall male novice riders' title. The16-year-old reinforced his lead with afacile victory on Rachael Green's greySilver Token in the PPORA NoviceRiders' contest.

LEDBURYat MAISEMORE PARKSunday, 29 Marchby Peter Mansell"I can't believe it" stated 17-year-oldEd Bailey after he had ridden his firstwinner during Sunday's LedburyPoint-to-Point at Maisemore Park.Royal Riviera headed Ballygalley Bobon the final bend and opened up anunassailable lead between the final twofences.

"I'm studying at Radley College andhave to stop race riding in the nextcouple of weeks to concentrate on myA-Levels. My parents live in Ross-on-Wye but I ride out regularly forEastnor trainer Nickie Sheppard" saidBailey later.

Little Sodbury based farrier CharlieDando finished second in this race onPresenting William but went onebetter by steering Cecile de Volangesto victory in the Restricted. Long-timeleader Beallandendall was still in frontwith half a mile to run but had

nothing in reserve when challenged byMichael Hawker's mare 3 fences fromhome. Dando reported the mare"lacked confidence but has improvedwith extensive schooling".

Swift Counsel started a warm favouritefor the three runner West MidlandsArea Conditions race and for most ofthe contest it looked as though JaneWilliams mount would justify thatsupport, until they were passed byTripitico and Sam Drinkwater in thehome straight.

Miss Williams was hoping to gaincompensation on Lienosus in theMixed Open but once again had tosettle for second place behind RosiesPeacock who gave his supporterscause for concern by ploughingthrough the final obstacle.

Horatio Cane caused a major surprisein the Connolly's Red Mills PrecisionNutrition sponsored Intermediate asthey took advantage of their rival'smisfortunes to storm clear in the

home straight. This was a fourthcareer success for the 28-year-oldCordelia Chugg, who works as aNorland Nanny in London but findstime to race-ride in her spare time andhas her horses prepared by JulieMansell at Hasfield.

Seasoned observers were searching forsuperlatives after the Gabe Mahonnewcomer Chap had routed theopposition in the Maiden. Mahon saidlater "My daughter Ella was left ahorse in a will and picked this one outas a yearling. He was impressive but Iam not sure what he beat but he hasbeen well pre-pared and jumped like astag".

There was an equally impressiveperformance by Nick Phillips Biburytrained Noble Ned in the 2 mile 5Furlong Maiden. Breath of Blightywas going as well as anything when heducked out at the 4th from home. Itwold have been interesting to see himbattling it out with Noble Ned overthe final two fences.

SOUTHDOWN & ERIDGEat GODSTONESunday, 29 Marchby Will HickmanGodstone spectators were put throughweather of biblical proportions, asstrong winds and lashing rainthreatened to uproot anything thatwasn't tied down. But any punters whotoughed it out were rewarded withsome decent racing which includedfive winning favourites.

The first of six Point-to-Point raceswas the 2m4f Maiden race, which waswon decisively by odds on favouriteMiss Alice Jones. Phil Hall just had tosteer her round as her rivals fell by thewayside.

The second race was a little less onesided, with the market leaders Man OfSteel and Will Fight giving each othera battle up the straight. By the finishline Man Of Steel was on top of hisrival, giving Alan Hill his first winnerof the afternoon.

The third race was the £1,000 SouthEast Kent Grand National, for whichseven runners lined up for a shot atthe £500 winners prize money. ReyNacarado and Hunters Lodge wereboth useful stayers under rules andthey tested each other's stamina asthey tussled for the final circuit. However, the Gina Andrews riddenRey Nacarado always looked like hewas on top and he just held of the PhilYork trained and ridden HuntersLodge. The winner was scoring hissecond win in Point-to-Points forDavid Phelan, clearly enjoying the stepback down from Hunter Chase level.

David Kemp had come off secondbest in the Conditions race, but hewent one better in the three mileMaiden, as Po Valley easily held offBoy Of Boru, who was the only horsewho could get near the favourite. Itwas a worthwhile trip for the in-formKemp, with all four of his runnersfinishing in the frame.

Minerfortyniner had achieved a secondand a win at Godstone's previous twomeetings and he followed upcomfortably in the Restricted in thehands of his owner David Maxwell. He held off Charing winnerSpiritofchartwell, who proved hestayed the three mile trip and looks acertainty to win a Restricted later inthe season.

The concluding Novice Riders racewas won by another odds on (1/5)favourite Done A Runner, who madeup for unseating at the last three weeksago. He was ridden by his regular pilotLucy Wheeler, who has now won onhim four times from six rides. He gavehis trainer Alan Hill a double on theday, putting him within touchingdistance of Jack Barber, who iscurrently leading the National TrainersChampionship.

CONNOLLY’S RED MILLS PRECISION NUTRITION SERIES 2014/15PUCKERIDGE AT HORSEHEATHSaturday, 28 MarchThe trail-blazing Ronnie Lawsoncompleted an unbeaten hat-trickbetween the flags with an easy victoryat Horseheath, but much to thechagrin of rider James Ferguson hewill not be going to the Cheltenhamfinal.

Any horse which has competed underNational Hunt rules since 1stNovember 2014 is not eligible forHunter Chases during the 2014/15season, and Ronnie Lawson, havingrun over hurdles at Kempton just twodays past the cut-off date, comes intothat category.

“It’s a crying shame,” commentedJames, who felt that his mount hadimproved with each outing. “He didn’tshow much under Rules, but Pointinghas given him a new lease of life, andhe’s really enjoying himself now.”

Ronnie Lawson was bought as a store, and is named after one of Sir MichaelStoute’s work riders at the time whenJames’s father John was assistant to theNewmarket trainer. He is ridden everyday at home by Jess Hugo, who, saidJames, “gets on brilliantly with him.”

The six-year-old, who is a full brotherto David Pipe’s smart performerKings Palace, may return to Rules

racing later in the year to follow asummer jumping campaign.

“I’d love to have a ride in the final,”smiled Rupert Stearn, who finishedrunner-up on his father Simon’sDesertmore Valley, “but he’d need torun really well next time [at HighEaster in a fortnight] to make it worthentering. We don’t shoot too high!”

The lightly-raced ten-year-old, twicesuccessful between the flags in Ireland, has performed consistently for theStearns, being placed on severaloccasions without managing to get hishead in front. Rupert reported him tobe a straightforward ride, although hecan’t be ridden out on his own andalways needs a lead to get him out ofthe yard.

The jockey is currently scar-free, but inthe past has had plenty of evidence ofDesertmore Valley’s habit of biting –“He’s evil in the box!”

A former East Anglian champion,Rupert combines doing the stable’sseven horses with working on thefamily farm.

Also heading to High Easter is thirdhome Franks A Million, who will nothave a Cheltenham entry due to thefact that his trainer-rider Ed Turner

will be unable to make the weight dueto his height and build. Ed struggles todo 12 stone, and in this race carried3lbs overweight.

The son of Blueprint is still a maidenover fences, but because he won aBumper for his previous handlerMicky Hammond he has had to gostraight into Intermediate class. “Hewas very novice over his fences lastseason,” reported Ed, “but the quickerground helps his jumping, and wewere pleased with him.”

Ed is the only one who can hold himon the gallops at home, where he pullshard, but the application of a grackleon the racecourse has taught him tosettle much better in his races.

Earl Grez’s fourth place gives trainerAlan Hill, who has two of his charges,Man Of Steel and Done A Runner(who won an “ordinary”Intermediate), already qualified, another string to his bow. Alan, aconfirmed supporter of both thecompany’s sponsorship and itsproduct, has landed the main prize forthe past two years, but Earl Grez’sparticipation is going-dependant, as hefavours fast ground.

Earl Grez has been labelled asungenuine by some observers, butAlan describes him as “honest as the

day is long. He’s the easiest horse inthe world – he was out hunting onTuesday, and will jump anything.”

To prove the point, Alan’s son Joe,who was in the plate at Horseheath, ishoping to compete with him in thenext running of either the Melton orHarborough Rides.

BELVOIR AT GARTHORPESunday, 29 MarchGonalston Cloud, who comes fromthe family of the smart performersJezki, Jered and Strong Run, was animpressive winner of the Garthorpequalifier in the hands of commercialproperty agent, 6’2” tall TomStrawson, his regular partner.

The grey had a few outings overhurdles from Nick Kent’s yard, butthis year, trained by his owner RogerJackson, he has scored three times, hisonly defeat being a narrow one toLegal Legend (who has already bookedhis Cheltenham place) on this trackearlier in March.

There could hardly have been a moreappropriate success, as Roger, who isChairman of the South Notts Point-to-Point committee, was singing thepraises of Red Mills products in thewinner’s enclosure after the race!

Gonalston Cloud was led up by DanniMartt, who rides him every day, andwho later donned Roger’s red andgreen colours to finish second in the3m Maiden on Pommier d’Estruval, only her fifth ride in public.

Tom Strawson’s family is steeped inhunting and eventing. His father Paulis a joint-Master of the Brocklesby, and his aunt, Ginny Strawson, was amultiple medallist in Junior and YoungRider eventing.

It was mission accomplished forrunner-up Carrigkerry, for whom theaim had always been to qualify forCheltenham. He is trained byCharlotte Fuller for her husbandRichard, Chairman of the Point-to-Point Owners’ & Riders’ Association, and was ridden by their daughter Page, who is currently lying joint-third in thenational ladies’ championship.

Purchased at Ascot in 2012 for just£1,100, Carrigkerry won his Maidenon this track the following year, butlast season was sidelined from Marchafter breaking his pelvis.

“He can get excited on the yard, buton the gallops he’s a bus!” laughedPage. “He’s so simple, but at last he’s

realised what racing is about.” All theFuller horses live out 24 hours a day, but, Page explained, “Carrigkerry isthe biggest wuss of the lot, so he hashis own little shed to shelter in!”

Page gave up her University studies toconcentrate on horses, and shecurrently rides out for several differentyards. She is hoping to get someopportunities on the flat this summer,as she did last year.

Just three of the five starters gotround, and third-placed LoveManhattan, Connolly’s-fuelled likeGonalston Cloud, owes hiscompletion to rider Tom Chatfeild-Roberts, who made a fine recoverywhen his mount belted the tenth in nouncertain terms.

A Maiden winner as a four-year-oldfor Tom Lacey, Love Manhattan wasbought at Doncaster last May for£17,000 by Tom’s parents John andDoone, and is trained by his auntHelen ‘H’ Connors, whose father BillFoulkes was a leading amateur riderwho won the Aintree Fox HunterChase on Dominion in 1962.

beginning of February with colitis, willnot be heading to Cheltenham. “He’sonly five,” explained Tom, whohimself is in his third year at London’sRoyal Veterinary College, “so we wantto take our time with him.”

LEDBURY ATMAISEMORE PARKSunday, 29 MarchHoratio Caine, who was highly triedover hurdles as a juvenile, was a shockwinner of the qualifier at MaisemorePark, where he was sent off theoutsider of the nine-strong field.

“It would be the ultimate dream toride him at Cheltenham,” confessedowner Cordelia Chugg, whose plan toride him at the Hunter Chase eveningtwo years ago came to naught when hewent lame beforehand. “He’s quitecapable of jumping round there,”agreed trainer Julie Mansell, but due tohis preference for some give in theground nothing definite has beenmapped out.

Cordelia was delighted to havetriumphed at the Ledbury’s meeting, asHoratio Caine has been well huntedwith the pack as well as with theNorth Ledbury. He was due to havecontested the latter’s Members’ racethe previous week, but Cordelia wasunwell and not able to ride him.

Cordelia is a Norland Nanny whocombines working in London four

days a week with pursuing herequestrian interests. She is a formerleading side-saddle rider who won theConcours d’Elegance at the RoyalShow, and as a junior she wasunbeaten in side-saddle classes on the1995 Grand National winner RoyalAthlete, who was given to her fatherJohn by Jenny Pitman. “I’d love to seeif Horatio Caine would take a side-saddle. I’m tempted to try him in thesummer,” she admitted.

John Chugg was a prolific winningPoint-to-Point rider and trainer. He isa respected showing judge, but nolonger rides after breaking his backwhen being bucked off in the ring atthe Dublin Horse Show in 2004.

Trainer Sarah Bosley has fairly recentlybecome a Connolly’s convert, and hercharge Barrick’s Hill, runner-up underZac Baker, will have an entry for thefinal. He was off the track last seasonafter undergoing a soft palateoperation and suffering from jointproblems, but ran at the Hunter Chasemeeting at Cheltenham two years ago, when he finished a very creditablesixth in the four-miler under the thenamateur Nico de Boinville.

Barrick’s Hill is ridden out every dayby his owner, 60-something IanHerbert, and his temperament is such, reported Sarah, that a five-year-old

child could swing on his tail and hewouldn’t turn a hair! “He’s a big, old-fashioned type,” she added, “and he’s alegend out hunting.”

Zac, who celebrates his 21st birthdayin a fortnight’s time, is the youngerbrother of flat jockey George Baker. He has been in fine form under Rules, scoring six victories from just 17 ridesin the five months from mid-October.He has worked full-time for theBosleys since leaving school, havingspent every spare moment at their yardsince the age of 12.

Dandan, third of the three finishersunder Mark Wall, was a £15,000purchase by owner Hugh Wilson, awildlife documentary film maker, atBrightwells’ Cheltenham Sale inDecember 2013.

“He was very disappointing last year,”admitted trainer Fran Moller, “but heis improving. He was quite difficult toride at home but he does settle betternow.”

No decision has been made withregard to a Cheltenham entry, butDandan’s next outing could be atAndoversford in two weeks’ time, assuming he has his favoured top ofthe ground.

RECENT LANDMARKSJockeys firsts, doubles and other career highs by Carolyn Tanner

Former Yorkshire area champion John

Dawson recorded his 50th successbetween the flags when taking the

Men’s Open at Askham Bryan on

Force Of Habit, trained by SarahDent.

He opened his account on Benwell at

Mordon in 2007, and rode 14 winners

as a Conditional between 2012 and2014. Having by that time recorded

23 National Hunt successes he elected

to revert to amateur status before

getting to the cut-off point of 25winners, after which the option would

no longer be available to him. “I

missed the Pointing scene anyway,” he

admitted. He has since registeredanother two victories to reach his

quarter-century under Rules.

For the past few weeks John, who

marries Alice Petch in May, has beenworking every morning for Tina

Jackson, and in the afternoons he does

the horses belonging to Graham Russ.

Rob Jarrett had gone without a winsince scoring on Time Gentlemen atTabley almost a year ago, but JohnnyOg’s Intermediate victory at Bangorgave him his 50th career success.

He spent eight days in October inintensive care with a ruptured spleen, punctured lung, lacerated kidneys andliver, and broken ribs after a horsecollapsed underneath him on thegallops. He applied for his licence inDecember but was granted it onlyearlier this month [March], and thiswas just his sixth ride of the currentcampaign.

His initial Point-to-Point success cameon Upton Sovereign at Cold Harbourin 2010, and his tally includes 15 underRules. In 2012 he was leading HunterChase rider, with one of his eightvictories being in Stratford’sprestigious John Corbet Cup onRumbury Grey.

Rob is based every morning at MickleyStud, breaking and pre-training, and inthe afternoons rides out for various

yards, including that of Johnny Og’s

trainer Sam Allwood.

Another rider to register a career half-

century was Pete Mann, who reached

the target on the Julie Marles-trained

Castle Connell at Brampton Bryan.

Pete was deputising for owner David

Renney, who is in hospital with

fractured vertebrae after a fall at

Brafield the previous week.

Pete, who opened his account on

Killarney Prince at Barbury in 2006,

retired from race-riding at the end of

the 2009/10 season after becoming

fed up with constant dieting, but he

got the bug again after schooling a

horse for his mother Jo. He resumed

racing at the end of 2011, and has

since taken his total between the flags

to 47, plus three Hunter Chase

victories on Doctor Kingsley, all at

Cheltenham.

It was a red-letter day at Friars Haughfor 19-year-old Charlotte Dun, whoopened her account in the Ladies’Open on Rolecarr for her motherJane, herself a winning Point-to-Pointrider under her maiden name ofHutchinson, and promptly doubled upin the older horse Maiden on FarmPixie for her aunt, Kathy Weir, whoserugby international husband Doddiewon over 60 caps for Scotland.

It was an emotional day for the family,as Rolecarr carried the colours ofCharlotte’s late father Michael, whodied suddenly just two monthspreviously.

Both horses were obtained, at anominal price, from Ian and AnnHamilton, for whom Michael used toride, and who wanted to ensure theduo went to good homes once theyhad retired from racing under Rules.

Charlotte had her first ride on MoltenBrown at Alnwick in 2013, but lastseason dislocated her shoulder in a fallat Corbridge. She is shortly due to takeher second year exams in Accountancyand Economics at Edinburgh’s Heriot-Watt University.

Emma Chaston, who made her debutat Alnwick in December, just afortnight after her sixteenth birthday,

scored her initial victory on hermother Paula’s Radio Nowhere in the2m4f Maiden at Bangor.

She enjoyed success in Pony Racing, and in 2013 and 2014 was a memberof the English team in the contestsagainst Ireland.

She is in her last year at school, andadmits she will be leaving as soon aspossible after completing her GCSEexams, in which “I’ll be happy just toget passes!” she laughed.

Her immediate aim is to try to win theNorth West area’s leading NoviceRider award, while she would like tomake her future in racing. Havingbecome friendly with Abbie McCainthrough the Pony Racing, she startedgoing in the holidays two years ago toher father Donald’s yard.

“The McCains have been a massivehelp to me,” Emma acknowledged, and it was from Donald that theChastons acquired both RadioNowhere and Mr Chippy.

Ed Bailey, 17, who had his first ride atBarbury in December, opened hisaccount on Royal Riviera, trained forhim by Nicky Sheppard, in theMembers’ race at Maisemore. “I felloff quite a lot to start with,” he

admitted, “but I’ve got the hang ofthings a bit better now,” and heexpressed his appreciation for thehelp and guidance given to him byRobbie Henderson.

Ed is an ‘A’ level student at RadleyCollege, and will only have the chanceof one or two more rides before, onparental orders, having to buckledown ready for his exams in Maths,Biology, Geography and DesignTechnology!

Ed was interested to find that one ofhis opponents in Sunday’s race wasthe veteran John Chinn, who in earlieryears had ridden against the teenager’suncle, Tom Bailey!

Garthorpe was the venue for the firstdouble for 19-year-old FredHenderson, who is reading History atNewcastle University. Fred won theNovice Riders’ contest on his fatherJames’s Otto The Great, and the 3mMaiden on Chris Bealby’s DreamMistress, who was bred by James.

Watching the day’s proceedings wasFred’s elder brother George, who issitting out this season after breakinghis pelvis in an accident, but intendsto return next year. “Fred will be toofat to ride by then,” was his brotherlycomment.

ASHFORD VALLEY TICKHAMat CHARINGSaturday, 04 Aprilby Will HickmanEaster is usually known for hugecrowds and small fields but this year itwill be different, as Charing hosts theAshford Valley Tickham meetingattracting 83 entries spread across sixraces.

The opening race is a Veteran &Novice Riders, which has replaced the2m 4f Maiden that traditionally kickedoff the meeting. The race has attracted12 runners and is a tough race tojudge. The highest rated entry is TimUnderwood's Tallow Fair, who wonthree races in 2012 but hasn't beenseen for two years. He also hasKellystown Lad, who finished a tiringfourth behind Owenacurra at the lastCharing meeting. Definite Ridge andKornati Kid finished in second andthird in front of him that day, but thelatter's form has dropped off sincethat race, while the former needs tocome back from slipping up atGodstone last time out. Zakharyinaand Duke Of Kentford were only aneck apart at Parham, while Gamato,

Lord Multifix and Captain Crackershave all been placed at the course.

The second race is the Subarusponsored Restricted and 16 horsesare entered to qualify for the SubaruRestricted Final. Simonsruudt was animpressive winner at Parham and hecould have a good chance to follow uphere, but he could take up his entry atAldington instead. David Kemp hastwo entered and will either runGreatballsoffire or Hill Of Gold, withthe latter in the better form havingfinished second at Higham inFebruary. De Clare Man was animpressive Maiden winner andcomfortably beat Simonsruudt atGodstone, but then found CountryFoolery too good. Conna Cloudplaced here in February beforewinning at Hackwood Park and heshould be better for the experience. Ahorse to note is Tim Underwood'sCarnglave Cat, who was placed in aPoint-to-Point in Ireland as recently asthree weeks ago. The nine year oldwon his Maiden in 2012, but has ahigh Point-to-Point rating and mayfind this easier than what he's beenused to.

The Open Maiden has 15 entries butshould be fairly straight forward.Slidecheck was second toShutthebackdoor here in February anddespite being a beaten favourite atPenshurst a fortnight ago, he shouldbe the best horse in the race. JennaPride is the second highest ratedhaving finished third and fourth onher two races this season, whileBallybrack Dancer has similar form.Minmore Grey and My Brother Pathave also placed this season, but therest of the field don't quite look up totroubling these yet.

The Mixed Open has 14 entries andwill see Behind The Scenes aim tobuild on his lead as the leading horsein the area, where he could be testedby either Broughton Green or SessionOr Ression. The other horses willneed to raise their game to test BehindThe Scenes, but a return to form fromBit Of A Clown could see him in themix.

The Club Members Conditions racehas 13 entries, with a lot of themdouble entered in other races. DavidKemp always has to be feared and hecould have a chance of taking thiswith Caulkin, who was second at the

Cheltenham Hunter Chase eveninglast year. However, he could beundone by stretching his stamina andthat could be done by Come On You,who stays all day and will be sure tomake the running. Alternatively NickPearce could run Session Or Ressionin this instead of the Mixed Open.Other dangers could be Orfeo Conti,Kornati Kid, Definite Ridge, Time IsTickin or Tallow Fair.

The concluding race is the AshfordValley and Coakham BloodhoundsHunt Members Race, which has awhopping 13 entries. Come On Youand Duke Of Kentford head the field, while Gagewell Flyer was a Grade Twowinner over hurdles for Willie Mullinsand would be an obvious threat ifreturning to anywhere near that sort ofform.

CROOME & WESTWARWICKSHIREat UPTON-UPON-SEVERNSaturday, 04 Aprilby Peter MansellWaterlogging caused the loss of lastyear's meeting at Ryalls Court butracing had taken place at this venue forover 100 years prior to that.

This meeting should prove attractiveto inhabitants of nearby Upton-upon-Severn with the seven race programmebeginning at 2 p.m.

The Mahon family have always beenclosely associated with this fixture sowill be keen to win the Members with

Awesome George who made such afavourable impression at Howickrecently.

Tom Weston's Hindlip yard continuesin fine form although the rider hasmissed several winning rides followinghis fall at the Cheltenham Festival. Thetrainers father Martin is Clerk of theCourse at this meeting so they will behoping that his hard work will berewarded.

Cold Knight and Soixante Six haveboth won their fair share of racesalthough the former was pulled upwhen dropping out of contention atHereford two weeks ago. That has tobe a cause for concern but could causean upset based on his early seasonperformances. Soixante Six's jumpingcan be fragile so it would not be wiseto support him if his odds areprohibitive.

Rainbow Trout is a useful yardstickwho is bound to run her normalhonest race for Zara Smith'sWorcester yard, while Seven Days mayhave to settle for a place.

The Weston's Stonefield featuresamongst the entries for the Restrictedand he should be suited by the longgalloping track, although the stable hasa useful second string in Sir Ollar, withJack Joner and Warpath likely to provethe best of the rest.

Jill Carenza's runner Father's Emperorhas a high class pedigree but thatmeans nothing if he has not inheritedsome of his parent's ability - this runwill be very informative.

You will need a pin to pick out thewinner of the Mares and FilliesMaiden. Those that have run have notshown much ability but that has to bebalanced against the potential forthose making their debuts - PresentingTaupo is a tentative selection.

Connections could try to squeezeanother win out of Royal Riviera inthe Mixed Open for Novice Riders asjockey Ed Bailey is due to commencehis A-Levels shortly.

James Ridley deserves all the plauditsif Bowdens Lane makes it back intothe winner's enclosure in theConditions race, but that is unlikelyand leaves the way open for GuyDisney's mount Swing Bill.

Disney could be reunited with theSarah Stafford trained Ballycassel inthe Intermediate, although this looks aparticularly strong renewal with ColdKnight, Kazuri Kate, Soixante Six andThoonavolla all possible participants.

The concluding 2m5f Maiden couldgo Axelle Walls way with Wy Worryjust getting the nod. Croston andGolanzine also have to be considered, while Jack in a Box ran prominently atHereford and could pop up atrewarding odds.

and Ipswich on Saturday whenHigham Racecourse stages a 58-entryEssex & Suffolk fixture.

This meeting usually attracts a massivecrowd and is often enjoyed as muchfor its ‘Country Fair/Family Day Out’element as for its racing.

This year it features an extensiveshopping village in a huge marquee, numerous trade stands andrefreshment opportunities, a variety offairground attractions and an ArmyGazelle Helicopter display over andabove its six steeplechases and twochildren's pony races.

The pony racing, around the regularcourse but bypassing the obstacles, gets the equine action under way at1pm while the Point-to-Pointingcommences at 2.10pm when there aresix possible runners in the RestrictedRace.

Both the Ladies Open and NoviceRiders Races could witness rematchesfrom the corresponding contests atthe most recent Higham fixture, heldon February 22nd.

For the 12 entries for the Ladiesinclude Quinsman, Volcan Surpriseand Carlanstown - the horses whofilled the first three positions here sixweeks ago.

It would be no great surprise if VolcanSurprise were to overturn those

placings, although this Sandra Fryer-trained gelding does have to bounceback from a poor effort last time outand holds an alternative engagement inthe 11-entry Mens Open.

And the Novice Riders event has the1-2-3 from the same type of race herein February - Banksandditches, TheMaster Remover and Galbally King -among its 14 entries.

But these three East Anglian-trainedchasers could end up playing secondfiddle at best if either of a pair ofclassy performers from further afield -the impressive course winner, BrokenEagle, and Lotus Pond, already athree-time scorer this season - turn upto take them on.

Nick Wright, whose yard is based atBadlingham, near Newmarket, has twoleading Mens Open candidates in BachTo The Wall and Patsy Finnegan, anda clear round of jumping would surelysuffice for the Wright silks to becarried to victory in the 11-entry OpenMaiden aboard the accident-proneBaroque Style.

KIMBLEWICK at KIMBLESaturday, 04 Aprilby Jake ExelbyThe Easter Saturday Point-to-Point atKimble has long been one of the mostpopular in the country - last year, good

weather saw a crowd estimated at8,000 to watch local trainer Alan Hillbag a treble, on his way to landing thenational Point-to-Point trainerschampionship at the end of theseason.

Unsurprisingly, the maestro of AstonRowant holds a strong hand again thisyear - with 15 entries on a card that, like so many meetings over the Easterweekend, will be defined by the qualityof the horses rather than the quantity. He takes us through some of his mainchances on the card.

Highlight of the day should be thelatest qualifier in the Bonhams MensOpen series of races, for which thefinal is held at Cheltenham on 29thApril. Among the eight entries are twowho took part in the CheltenhamFoxhunters, with the Alan Hill-trainedConsigliere looking to finish in frontof Brackloon High again. "On paperit's a good race and we plan to runConsigliere," confirmed the trainer."We beat Brackloon High atCheltenham and faster ground willsuit. He ran a game, honest race thereand we hope this will be a confidencebooster for him."

Another runner of interest toracegoers will be the Henrietta Knighttrained Port Golan, who pulled up in aHunter Chase last time. If he appears,it will be her first runner between the

flags for over 25 years - many will notbe aware that she was a championPoint-to-Point trainer, before turningher attention to professional racingand being responsible for legends suchas triple Gold Cup winner Best Mate.

The opening Confined Race is anotherin the AGA championship, culminating at Chaddesley Corbett on25th May. "It looks competitive," saidAlan Hill. "I may run Alpha Native forowner-rider Susannah Gill. She's in hersecond season and her horse isimproving with each run. He too willdefinitely enjoy the faster ground."Stiff opposition will be provided bythe useful Clouded Thoughts andCharles Bruce, who has not run thisyear but was running in Hunter Chaseslast season.

The third race with a national sponsoris the Subaru Restricted, the final forwhich is at Stratford on 29th May.This is the one race in which Alan Hilldoes not have an entry. Top-rated isMichael Kehoe's Celtic Intrigue, whowas unlucky at Whitfield last timewhen a mistake at the last could havecost him the race. Laura Thomas islikely to be represented bySwingbridge, who won at the sameWhitfield meeting - runner-up PoValley franked the form at theweekend. "I think Kimble will suithim," the trainer told me. "He'll stay allday and I think a lot of him."Jamrham has not been disgraced inHunter Chases this season and thedrop in grade should help.

Start Royal, part-owned by Clerk ofthe Course Stewart Nash and theubiquitous Alan Hill will be seekinghis 21st victory in the Origins WineBar Ladies Open. "It's a definitetarget," stated his trainer positively."He's come out of his Brafield runwell and has run well on the coursebefore (he won this race last year) so itseems an obvious place to run." Themain danger, if he travels up fromSomerset, could be the Ollie Bush-trained John Daniell.

The other horse entered at Kimblefrom the Bush yard is His Lordship -in the Hildreth Garden CentresMaiden Race - who has not been seenon the course since a promisingsecond in a competitive Maiden atLarkhill a year ago. Chief danger onform is Nightscape, another trained byLaura Thomas. "It was gutting to getbeaten at the Oakley," she lamented."He's run two very good races anddeserves to win. We're looking forgood or good to firm ground andKimble will suit him."

Alan Hill relies on the hithertodisappointing Fiddleesticks, whowould be a popular winner for BobGroves. As the trainer explained, thereare excuses for his last two runs. "Hecame back from Kingston Blount fullof muck and has had three weeks onthe easy list, but the vet scoped him onMonday and gave him a clean bill ofhealth. "You'd fancy him on his firsttwo runs and the ground didn't suit onhis third.

The concluding RichardsonsChartered Surveyors Members Racecould be a Hill benefit, with the trainerresponsible for five of the sevenentries. Most likely to go at this stageis Brian's Well, who would be riddenby son Joe. "He's a tough, consistentlittle horse," enthused his trainer."He's under-rated and capable ofwinning more races this season."

Clerk of the Course Stewart Nashupdated me having walked the trackwith the Course Inspector and SeniorSteward. "The going is Good all roundand it's taken the recent rain well, sowe don't expect it to change eventhough there is more rain forecast laterthis week. We won't be watering."

I also spoke to meeting secretaryFiona Reynard, who is lookingforward to the weekend's events."We've done a lot of work on theground over the past three years tohelp improve the going and make surewe've got a great course," she said."We're sold out of reserved car parktickets and it should be a good day."

Fiona was also quick to praise thesponsors. As well as the national andlocal race sponsors mentioned above, meeting sponsors include Cutler &Gross, Equine Sciences, Jeremy SwanEstate Agents, Joules and the SirCharles Napier restaurant.

Kimble has been used for Point-to-Pointing for over 100 years. It is a flatstayers' course of about 3m1f thatsuits stayers, with portable islandfences of average size and build. Car

LUDLOW at BITTERLEYSaturday, 04 Aprilby Stella HavardBitterley is always a very popularcourse with Point-to-Point spectators, boasting a perfect natural grandstand, surrounded by beautiful scenery. TheLudlow Hunt fixture on EasterSaturday (4th) is sure to be as well-attended as always, with 7 races toenjoy, followed by two Pony races, which are rapidly expanding inrecognition. There are always a goodselection of trade stands and children'srides, making it a ‘proper' holidayweekend-outing.

Downton- based Point-to-Pointtrainer, Victoria Collins is having asuccessful season, and holds three ofthe five entries in the Hunt Membersrace, two with recent form, WindsAnd Waves having been 4th to stablecompanion Swift Escape at Hereford, and Union De Chenet a 22l 2nd in aHowick Maiden. Qrackers in the

highest rated of the three, but has notrun since being 3rd in a Ladies racelast November. But ‘Tank', as PeterCorbett's Upton Centurion isaffectionately known, showed real gritwhen getting up by a head for JamesJeavons at Brampton Bryan lastweekend, and is a hard horse to deny.Patrick Hanley's charge, The RubberMan showed promise last season, andmay hit form as the ground improves.

The 11 entries in the Confined raceare all quality, with Alastair Ralph'sStratford Stroller, looking the pick, having been a runner up at Howick onhis seasonal debut. But Hazel Hill wasa recent Restricted winner at Bangor, and Swift Escape appreciated betterground when winning at Herefordrecently. Philip Rowley's stable is bangin form, and his Charlie Wingnut mayimprove on his recent Bangor 3rd.

Disappointingly, there are only fourentries in the Restricted race. AlastairRalph's entry, Midnight's Mischief, anearly winner, and beaten a whisker atGarnons on her last appearance, islikely to be the warm favourite. BothAll At Once and Paddy B were 5th ontheir last outings and are running intoform.

Following Dreams, a gallant second inthe Cheltenham Foxhunters, is thepick of the five entries in theBonhams Mens Open race. However,Kirsty Adcock's stable is also well inform, and Stone was an 8l winner atHereford recently, while Tom Weston'scharge, Jetnova was the winner of aNovice Rider's race at the Oakleymeeting, and Royal Riviera won theMember's at Maisemore last weekendfor Nicky Sheppard's stable.

Gauvain had Invisible Man 19Lbehind him in 3rd when winning atHereford recently, and is likely to bethe form horse of the eight enteredfor the Ladies Open race. But KazuriKate is very consistent, and has notbeen out of the frame this year, recently winning at Brafield-on-the-Green. The Rucker's hold two highly-rated entries, Lienosus, 2nd atMaisemore, and Sagalyrique, an earlywinner. Locally-trained Minella ForParty is a course winner here and wasa recent Ladies Open winner atHowick.

There are 11 entries for the OpenMaiden race, and both Union DeChenet and Intoxicate have beenrecent runners up, while

Bearfacedcheek was 3rd at Hereford, where Croston was 5th. Brown Harpwas 4th at Brampton Bryan lastweekend. Sir Reecer, a 2nd in direconditions at Chaddesley, may surpriseif the going becomes very soft.

The 2 mile 4 furlong ‘Young Horse'Maiden race has the largest entry ofthe afternoon attracting 17. JeremyMahot's Tim's Crusader was a verycreditable runner up at BramptonBryan last week to earn top rating, butGlyn Slade-Jones' charge, My FairRose was a good second at Hereford.Patrick Hanley's Echoes of Joy was apromising runner up at Maisemore lastweekend. If connections choose thisdistance for Croston, he should not beoverlooked.

MIDDLETONat SHERIFF HUTTONSaturday, 04 Aprilby Charlotte RussellA new course beckons for theMiddleton Hunt as they hold theirinaugural meeting at Sheriff Hutton.Already a well-established course usedfor the Yorkshire Area Club meetingand continually improved and tweakedby landowner and keen Middletonhunt and Point-to-Point supporterMick Easterby, it has attracted awhopping 119 entries for the sevenrace card which includes one ofPointing's classic races, theGrimthorpe Gold Cup, run over theextended distance of 4m1f.

The Hunt race is often one of themost competitive of the season andhas attracted 10 entries. Railway Dilloncould take this for Christine Druryhaving finished fourth here on hisdebut and coming second twice inhunter chase starts. Royal Deal is likelyto run for the Mason family but thejockey is yet to be finalised. "He's invery good order and even dropped hisrider on Monday", reported Jo Mason.Boy In Bangkok was second in anIntermediate last time out andShannon Silver looks to be on theupward curve. Either of Lady SusanWatson's horses may take part and runa big race and this could be one of theclosest races of the day.

Jockeys who are not novice riderscarry a 7lb penalty in the Clubmembers race and Camden has wontwice in Open company this seasonand likes a test of stamina so could gowell. Drom has been a model ofconsistency and can be forgiven forhis unseat at Charm Park and isanother who could go close. TopazeCollognes jumps well which will be tohis advantage and Royacano could alsobe in the shake up. Chip N Pin is likelyto take part for the Masons. "Beckyreturns to the saddle after her fall atthe Brocklesby. She (Chip N Pin) isgoing well after her win at theHolderness and gets to take advantageof Becky's novice rider status," said JoMason.

Aldreth is another improver from theStephanie Easterby yard and finishedfourth here on his debut over the

shorter distance of 2m4f. His CharmPark win sets him up nicely for thisbut the main challenge could comefrom family connections with SueMason's Comedinewithme who wasrunning a good race at the Hurworthuntil falling. "If the ground stays goodshe will more than likely run. She wastravelling well until falling last time outand we're hoping Cath Walton willtake the ride," said Jo Mason. Lortzingis another who can take a Restrictedrace and Harbour Way will be lookingto improve on his Hurworth outing."He should have come on for therun," reported jockey Max Johnson.

Monsieur Jourdain will be bidding forhis third successive Grimthorpe GoldCup victory and he looks hard to beat.Placed on both his starts this seasonhe will relish the extra distance andarrives in good heart.Sportingfriendship is likely to line upfor Steph Easterby's yard. "He's goingto try and keep up with WilliamEasterby and will hopefully stay thedistance," reported the trainer. KillaryBay is another who likes a test ofstamina and could be in the frame. After winning the Derwent andStaintondale Hunt race in March, hefollowed up by winning theKiplingcotes Derby under owner/trainer Tracey Corrigan, her secondsuccess in the race. "I won the Ladiesversion of the Grimthorpe in 1989riding Wold Song, it was the highlightof my life and it would be great to winthis race as a trainer," said Tracey, although she warned that his weekend

plans haven't been finalised. "I'm notsure if we'll go here or to theStaintondale meeting. I've hunted withthe Staintondale since 1966 so it wouldbe nice to support them."

28 entries have been made for the 3mMaiden race with a handful ofdebutants, one of these is Glorianne."We're happy with how she has beengoing at home," said her trainer GuyBrewer. Devil At Midnight has beenplaced second on his last two startsand could go close andChilledbychoice will be more suited byMaiden company. Norton Grove hasbeen absent since his Brockelsby fall,"we've given him plenty of time sowe're hoping he's fully recovered," saidSteph Easterby. Erica's Dream couldhave her first run in either of theMaiden races for the Masons.

The Intermediate is part of theConnolly's Red Mills series and Six ASide is likely to go for this over theHunt race. "He's improved with eachrun and he's the best he's been so farthis season," said rider Will Milburn."He looks a million dollars and I'mvery excited about riding him," hecontinued. TC Spitfire is another whois in good form and could be thebiggest danger. "I really like him buton paper this looks to be a very goodrace," said Max Johnson. Shantou

Prince is another who has doneeverything very easily with two winsfrom two starts this season but this islikely to be his toughest challenge yet.

Racing finishes with the 2m4f Maidenand Steph Easterby's Glen's Returnwill probably opt for this shorterdistance race. "We're hoping he canshow his owners their first Point-to-Point win," said Steph. Quinto wasrunning well here on his debut but felland has had two starts since and willbenefit from experience. Roll theDough was a good second at Overtonlast time, keeps improving, and is likelyto take this for Chris Dawson.

MONMOUTHSHIREat LLANVAPLEYSaturday, 04 Aprilby Brian LeeWith the Monmouthshire Hunt Point-to-Point at Llanvapley on EasterSaturday (First Race 2p.m.) and theSouth Pembrokeshire Hunt at Lydstepon Easter Monday (First race 1p.m.),Welsh enthusiasts are in for a busyweekend.

Both meetings have received the sametotal number of entries- 84 - and assome of the horses have dual entriesowners and trainers have yet to make

up their minds where their charges willbe running.

There are 12 down to run in theopening Intermediate race atLlanvapley and the best of theseappear to be the Marc Barber trainedDesertmore View who should provetoo good for Gale Force Lucey andMinella For Marriage.

The Four, Five, Six and Seven- year-old Open Maiden, for which there are13 entries, could go to the AmberGriffiths trained Final Storm but forthose looking for an outsider then PhilDando's Sahara Haze could give thema run for their money.

There are 11 entries for the MensOpen race and Jeff Bird's RepeatBusiness, who incidentally won therestricted race here last year, is takento beat Khachturian and Gallaflynn.

Khacturian is also one of the 12entries for the Ladies Open race andalthough Roger Willcox's Lauberhornwas never in the hunt at the recentCurre & Llangibby meeting, his jovialowner/trainer will be hoping for arepeat performance from last year. The prolific Chesnut Annie, StratfordStroller and course winner Doc Wellsare others to consider.

PORTMAN at BADBURY RINGSSaturday, 04 Aprilby Brian & Gill ArmstrongAiteen Thirtythree, who ran well for along way in the CheltenhamFoxhunter, and Chapoturgeon are thetwo to consider from the 19 entries forthe Portman Mixed Open at BadburyRings on Easter Saturday. The formerwas unbeaten in his five previousraces, including a facile victory on the2014 corresponding card and aFebruary Lingfield Hunter Chase.

Chapoturgeon, winner of his onlyPoint-to-Point at Milborne St Andrewin 2012, finished runner-up to Salsifyin the 2012 Cheltenham Foxhunter, but has not appeared since finishingsecond to Mossey Joe in the StratfordHorse & Hound Cup 22 months ago.The pair could face challenges fromChapoturgeon's stable companion,Posh Totty, Hameldown Tor, whoprovided Robbie Henderson's 100thcareer success at Milborne St Andrew,Certain Flight, runner-up in his twoPoints this season, Cotley winnerSteeltown and Cock Of The Rock, aLarkhill winner for Harry Cobden inMarch. Chapoturgeon gets the vote, with Aiteen Thirtythree fancied for theforecast.

Posh Totty is the likely favourite forthe Confined, if connections take upthe option, while stable companionGhizao has chances if putting in aclear round. Theatre Evening, who ledHameldown Tor over the last atMilborne St Andrew, and Saturday'sLarkhill runner-up Peyekashe havechances, while King's Wood wouldrelish a test of stamina. HinchesleaMoor was a facile winner at Larkhillon Saturday and can challenge PoshTotty.

Milborne St Andrew runner-up TurtleBoys, Wak A Turtle, who saunteredhome at Larkhill on Saturday, andLittle Cornham, winner of fourconsecutive Quantock Staghoundshunt races, are the three suggestionsfor the Intermediate. Cottenhamrunner-up Credit Crunched and dualBuckfastleigh-winner Miss Gotawayshould ensure a strong contest.

Cock Of The Rock, Credit Crunchedand Hincheslea Moor are among thenine entries for the Novice Riders'contest, along with Working Title, ajoint-leader in the National LeadingHorse Award race with four 2014/15successes. The evergreen BarneysMate may bid to add to his prolifictally, but Working Title is the selection.

Bill Dupont's Roy's Gallery can followup his Didmarton Maiden success inthe Restricted. Kilworthy winnerdoyen Dynamo and Larkhill runner-upOn Your Max can complete theplacings.

Two Maiden races complete the sevenrace card. Royalzaro can take the2m-5f contest. Kernel Victor and TheMystro are two to choose from in the3-mile event.

WOODLAND PYTCHLEYat DINGLEYSaturday, 04 Aprilby Emma FormanThe Dingley races season opens onEaster Saturday with the popularWoodland Pytchley Point-to-Pointmeeting and a large bank holidaycrowd is expected. 90 entries havebeen taken for a 7 race card starting at2pm with the last race due off at5.30pm.

Toby Hunt has three horses entered inthe opening Hunt Members (with theFernie); Done A Runner, I'llhavealookand Nightcap Jack. The best of theseis probably Done A Runner who willbe ridden by the meeting entriessecretary Lucy Wheeler. This seasonthe pair have won a Novice riders' raceand an Intermediate race and theyshould be in the frame here. Nightcap

Jack won this race last year and willprobably be ridden by his trainer DalePeters. However, Arkrose may justhave a bit more class; he and SamHutchinson have won two Bonham'sMens Open races this season and willtake some beating.

The Docker family's Amithereyetheads the entries for the ConfinedHunts race; he comes here fresh froma Restricted race win at the Oakley andis fairly consistent but moves upanother grade on Saturday. GeraldBailey's two entries The Talking Horseand Sandpipers should both be in theframe. The Talking Horse is owned byMargaret Moody and is anotherOakley winner; he won the Confinedrace there and will once again beridden by Tom McClorey. Sandpipersis a dual Dingley course winner andshould run well for Alex Vaughan-Jones. The interesting horse in the racewill be Atomic Tangerine, a five yearold mare owned by the Waley-Cohenfamily. She finished fourth in abumper last autumn before winning aTBA Club Mare's race at Larkhill andis an unknown quantity at this stage.Atomic Tangerine will benefit from alow weight due to her age and sex; she

will carry just 11stone compared tothe geldings that will carry 12 stone inthis race.

The third race is the 2 and a half mileMaiden and there are a number ofhorses with bits of form and forwhich a case can be made. SandraFryer's Verdasco showed promisewhen fourth at Higham in January.May The First trained by HeatherKemp has a chance on her best formand Annabel Wheatley's Empyreanlooks like he can win a short Maidenat some stage.

A small but select entry has been takenfor the Mixed Open; the feature raceon the card. Mike Dawson's MinellaClass cannot be ruled out if back tohis best and he showed signs that hemight be returning to form atGarthorpe when finishing fifth in aConditions race. Count Salazar hasbeen placed in two Mens Opens aswell as finishing fifth in the RoyalArtillery Gold Cup at Sandown forDominic Sutton. The winner, however, could well come from theJohn Ferguson yard in the shape ofThe Milan Horse who was rated 132when running under rules last autumnand has been second in a ClubMember's race so far since joining thePointing circuit.

Irish Rebel could be one for theshortlist in the Dodson & HorrellPPORA Novice riders' race if hemakes a quick return after finishingthird at Horseheath in a Mens Openrace on Saturday. The Rodeo Clownalso holds an entry; he is fresh from a

win at Mark's Tey in a Conditions race. However, the one they all have to beatcould be Qoubilai who has won twoOpen races this season and shouldfind this race a fairly straightforwardmission. The riders of the first threehorses past the post will score pointsfor the Harley Racing National NoviceRiders' Championship; the first fourhorses and riders past the post areeligible to run in the £1000 Dodson &Horrell PPORA Club Members racefor novice riders' series final at Tableyon Sunday 17th May.

Toby Hunts I'llhavealook may go inthe Restricted race instead of theearlier Member's race and has beenclose to winning at this level on anumber of occasions. Lady Vicstarshould be able to fill a place for SusieTarry and Andrew Sansome. Hill ofGold from David Kemp's stable wassecond on his first attempt at aRestricted behind the easy winnerTroufion and should be capable ofgoing one better in this contest.

The final Open Maiden to be run over3 miles concludes the programme. TheConnell family have Midnight Monkeyentered; he showed some promisewhen finishing third at Thorpe earlierin the season and can go close. TrainerPauline Harkin has the best chance ofsaddling the winner; she has threehorses entered and of these ExclusiveRights and Sea Rock look the best onpaper.

This is the first of three meetings tobe held at Dingley this year and riderswill score points for the Leading rider

award; the Morrison Cup, which willbe awarded at the end of theFitzwilliam Point-to-Point on Saturday16th May. The viewing at the course isexcellent and it is the ideal venue for afamily picnic. The gates open at 11am,there will be a Tote, bookmakers, alicenced bar, children's entertainmentsand a good range of trade stands.

CUMBERLAND FARMERSat DALSTONMonday, 06 Aprilby Peter BurgonThe popular Cumberland FarmersPoint-to-Point fixture at Dalston takescentre stage for Northern Areaenthusiasts on Easter Monday, with 92entries on a six race card starting at1pm.

The experienced Monbeg has beenplaced twice this year in races won byWoodview Prince andSportingfriendship at Friars Haughand Mordon respectively. A repeat ofthose efforts will make GemmaAnderson's charge hard to beat in theopening Members Race against thelikes of Accordingtotheboss andPresent To You. The latter has wontwice under Rules in the last five years, while 2013 winner,Accordingtotheboss has changedhands since last season and was tailedoff behind Rolecarr last Saturday.

Captain Redbeard scored on a tightrein under Sam Coltherd at Alnwickover two and a half miles butpreference is given to the NickAlexander-trained Afterclass, who hadbeen knocking on the door beforescoring at Crossford. Others toconsider are Hardy Oscar, Blue Bertieand the lightly raced According ToDan.

Alistair Cochrane's evergreen 14 yearold gelding, Keeverfield didn't seeanother rival when winning atCrossford a fortnight ago and a repeatperformance is on the cards in theLadies Open Race. The other 16entries include last week'sBerwickshire scorer, Rolecarr, 2013winner, Temple Green and DurbanGold, who won over a much longertrip at Corbridge.

The 12 entries for the John Peel Men'sOpen Race are headed by former 133-rated chaser, Rossini's Dancer. KitAlexander's mount was veryimpressive when landing the recentCrossford equivalent by twenty lengthsand can defy a 7lb penalty in his followup bid. Prolific winner, Gunner Jackand ex-chaser, Royal Chatelier haveshown all of their best form on soft orheavy ground, while Mister Splodgeand Nickwillis usually prefer a soundersurface. Wayupinthesky scraped home

from Sea Scout at Corbridge beforefinishing a well beaten fifth in aCarlisle Hunters' Chase.

Master Butcher can complete anothergood day for the Alexander team inthe NPPA Club Members Race.Successful in two of his three startsthis term at Alnwick and Crossford; heis still on an upward curve and canbrush aside a 3lb penalty. Of the other16 entries, Milano Magic ended a fouryear losing run last time out, Ocarinaand Tommys Lad both ran well whenplaced at Crossford, while last week'sBerwickshire scorer, Back On TheRoad also makes the shortlist.

The concluding Open Maiden Racehas 25 entries and, on paper, maychiefly concern De Bee Keeper,Heckley Herbert, Mister Kit, Nelly LaRue, Scuderia and Tulliroad. The lattercaught the eye on her reappearance atFriars Haugh three weeks ago whereshe led until headed after three outbefore weakening into sixth place. DeBee Keeper was in training withLucinda Russell until mid-January.Now with Russell Ross, he is morelikely to run at Whittington on EasterSaturday. Heckley Herbert didn't quitesee out the three mile trip whenrunner-up at Crossford; Mister Kithasn't been seen since finishingrunner-up in the corresponding race

last season, while Nelly La Rue andScuderia have both been placed ontheir last two starts.

EAST KENT WITH WESTSTREET at ALDINGTONMonday, 06 Aprilby Will HickmanAldington hosts the East Kent andWast Street Point-to-Point on EasterMonday (6th). The meeting hasattracted 92 entries, although a largenumber of them are entered at theAshford Valley Tickham meeting atCharing on Easter Saturday (4th).

The first race is the Open Maiden, which has a huge 22 entries. Boy OfBoru is the highest entered havingbeen placed twice at Godstone thisseason. His biggest dangers could beJody Sole's There You Are, who wasbest of the rest behind SimonsruudtParham, while Forward Planner andIntercooler Turbo were both placed inIrish Point-to-Points and bothachieved a decent rating of 80. Therest of the field is made up of horsesthat are also entered in the Charingrace.

The Restricted follows and it hasalmost identical entries to theRestricted at Charing. This race shouldbe between De Clare Man and

Simonsruudt, providing neither ofthem run at Charing two days before.

The Ladies Open features Behind TheScenes and his old rival Little Legend, but with the former looking likely torun at Charing, Cynthia Woods' elevenyear old should have a good chance tobounce back to his old form. JackBene and No No Bingo could bedangers and will surely capitalise onany errors that Little Legend makes.

The East Kent with West Street HuntMembers race is in the middle of thecard and there are eight entries fromthree different trainers. Chris Lawson'sOscarsfriend won the race last year, but this time he will face AlisonHickman's Thenford Ryde who alsowon on the card last season in a fastertime. Running In Heels is the best ofDavid Phelan's runners, but she won'tbe suited by soft conditions.

The Mens Open has a huge 18 entries, with Adept Approach heading thefield. The rest of the entries include alot that are also entered at Charing, including Come On You, GagewellFlyer, Kornati Kid, Lord Multifix,Orfeo Conti and Session Or Ression.

The following Club MembersConditions race has 17 entries and isalmost a copy of the Mens Open cardbut without Adept Approach. Ofthose entered Sud Nivernais isprobably the most likely to run andconnections will be hoping that he canfollow up his Penshurst win.

FOUR BURROWat TREBUDANNONMonday, 06 Aprilby Donna HarrisThe second of the Point-to-Pointmeetings over the Easter weekend inthe Devon & Cornwall area takesplace at Trebudannon, where it is theturn of the Fourburrow to host theirevent on Bank Holiday Monday April6, start time 1pm. This course ispopular with its natural amphitheatrestyle providing fantastic viewing. Theyhave eight races on offer including theBonhams Cornish National Men’sOpen race, attracting entries such asChapoturgeon from the Jack Barberteam who was a National HuntFestival winner. Posh Totty from thesame yard is another entry bang inform, having been in the frame on all12 of her last starts. The prolificwinning mare Lucette Annie is alsoentered, as is Bradley Brook, bothhold strong claims if not running atCherrybrook on Saturday.

The Members race, sponsored byA.G.Prowse heads up the action.Previous course winner Reliable Richieis the pick of the three ReubenChapman entries, who could improveon his third behind Silver Token andMic’s Delight at Buckfastleigh.

The Open Maiden has already beendivided, Miss Weld ran second herelast season, she loves the soft and goeswell for young jockey Pippa Glanville.Boyman is another entry with aprevious second at this course underjockey Conor Smith.

In the second division of the OpenMaiden, Ryalzaro trained by JackBarber, ran close at Larkhill in Januaryfinishing second under Will Biddick.Mount Prospex for the Jill Dennisteam would be the one to fear ifconnections choose this race overCherrybrook entry, after his headsecond at Kilworthy.

Mic’s Delight could put claims on theTruro Tractors-sponsored Confinedrace, having been in the frame on allof his starts this season for owner/trainer/jockey Jennifer Davenport. Heloves the soft, likes to keep his head infront as he showed when winning atOttery. Knight Pass for the NikkiFrost yard and Devon General forKayley Woollacott could be the onesto chase him home.

The Ladies Open race is sponsored byCarrs Landrover Truro, in whichMinella Fifty could score again hereafter his recent win at Milborne StAndrew, when sent off odds onfavourite, for the Claire Hitch team.Sweet My Lord connections will belooking for a hat-trick after his twowins at Wadebridge, and was runningwell at Kilworthy until falling.

The Restricted race is a qualifier forthe Subaru Restricted Point-to-Pointseries final to be held at Stratfordracecourse on Friday 29th May, inwhich entries include On Your Max,who has been knocking at the door fora Restricted win. Templeton was onlyjust denied a win under Jamie Thomaswhen caught in the final 150 yards bywinner Sonoftheking. Im All Set, from

the Claire Hitch yard, who won hisMaiden at Ston Easton at the secondtime of asking under Will Biddick. This race is sponsored by TremainePlant Hire.

Lamanva Brood Mares sponsor thethree mile Open Maiden race, JudgeJohn Deed could make his debut Pointrun here for the Barber family, whohave a good strike rate with maidenhorses at this course. Arny and Up ToOllie both ran well at the Kilworthymeeting and should improve for therun.

NORTH COTSWOLDat PAXFORDMonday, 06 Aprilby Peter MansellIt is always unwise to make pre-racepredictions but it seems a safe bet tosay that Kim Smyly's Stanton yard willwin the North Cotswold MembersRace at Paxford on Mondayafternoon. With three entries, including two in the ownership ofDavid Maxwell, the stable seems tohold all the aces in this contest.

Anseanachaie Cliste has beendisappointing (although competing at

a higher grade) since coming overfrom Ireland but Members racesprovide much easier opportunitiesthan he has had so far. Stablecompanion Minerfortyniner is muchless experienced but has already won aMaiden and Restricted.

Basil Fawlty threw away a winningchance by falling at Didmarton but rana good race behind Gauvain undernovice jockey Mae Daffern atHereford.

Jopaan has struggled to win a Maidenand that put his chances intoperspective in this contest, whilePassing Fast represents Martin Bent'sBadsey yard and victory does not looklikely at this early stage of her career.

Basil Fawlty is also entered for theNovice Riders but they could struggleto make an impact against the likes ofGus Levinson and Be Definite,Jetnova and John Smith Maxwell andJames King and Presentandcorrect.Jetnova and Presentandcorrect andtheir respective jockeys have alreadyformed useful partnerships and thatexperience is bound to prove useful inthis company. Every time GusLevinson gets within touching distance

of the winning post something comesalong and spoils the party, but havingbeen runner up on four occasions thedice has to turn in his favour at sometime, or will he continue to struggle toget his head in front?

The George Pragnell Ladies Open isthe West Midland Area Feature Raceand this has attracted Alan Hill'sCheltenham winner Sharp Suit.Gauvain won at Hereford and mustcome into calculations based on thatperformance, while Hey Porter andSagalyrique always perform well inthese contests. Stratford Stroller ranwell in defeat recently and may be theone to give the favourite most to do.

Brackloon High is assured of plenty ofsupport in the Mens Open, but as heis always putting in his best work atthe finish, the opposition will needsome breathing space so that hisfinishing kick is negated.

Forget Bob form always seems toimprove at this time of year, while IceCool Benny will prove difficult to beat.Perfectly Willing's chances have to berespected if he turns out again afterlast Sundays run at Maisemore, while

Rash Move is another for the shortlist.

With unsettled weather likely tocontinue up to the Easter WeekendStonefield may have conditions in hisfavour in the Restricted, althoughHindlip trainer Tom Weston mayprefer Sir Ollar's chances.

Keen Eye was staying on at the finishin a Ledbury Restricted and as thisvenue is similar in nature a similarperformance is expected.

Devils Boy represents Zara PhillipsGatcombe stable in the Restrictedwhile stablemate Frankenstorm holdsan entry in the Young Horse Maiden. On past evidence both of these horseswill struggle.

Twilight Fox and Wy Worry have bothshown a decent level of form inMaiden company and they will notlack assistance from Jane Williams andMark Wall. It may be worth keeping aneye out for Stow Hill who finishedsecond in Ireland and is trained bymeeting Secretary Sally Walker's sonEd.

OLD BERKSHIRE at LOCKINGEMonday, 06 Aprilby Jake ExelbyThe Old Berkshire Point-to-Point atLockinge on Easter Monday is one ofthe best-known and most popularmeetings of the season, oftenattracting crowds of up to 10,000.Racegoers are known for turning uphours before the first race and walking

the course, a dog on a lead in onehand and a drink in the other! Thisyear's meeting promises to be anothercracker, with a healthy and competitiveentry, and the main story being thepossible return to Point-to-Pointing ofone of the greats of the sport, after anabsence of more than a quarter of acentury.

Port Golan, who pulled up in a HunterChase last time, may represent formertop rules trainer Henrietta Knight inthe Mixed Open. The trainer said:"He's in good form and did a nice bitof work earlier this week but doesn'twant the ground too firm." If heappears, it will be her first runnerbetween the flags for over 25 years -many will not be aware that she was achampion Point-to-Point trainer, before turning her attention toprofessional racing and beingresponsible for legends such as tripleGold Cup winner Best Mate andChampion Chase and King GeorgeChase winner Edredon Bleu. In the1980s, Henrietta was responsible fortop-class Pointers Dromin Joker andMatt Murphy, and guided Mike Feltonto the national jockeys championshipon numerous occasions.

One horse the crowd will definitely seeis Coneygree, winner of the 2015Cheltenham Gold Cup, who willparade before racing. Trainer SarahBradstock commented: "The Point-to-Point circuit plays an important role tothe grass roots of horseracing and weare delighted to be supporting it. Infact I rode my first Point-to-Point

winner at this fixture on board LeanForward, so the racecourse holds aspecial place in my heart. Coneygree isin fine form after his Gold Cup winand is rather enjoying all theattention".

Visitors to this year's Point-to-Pointwill be treated to two pony races inaddition to six further thoroughbredjump races, as well as plenty of Easterfamily entertainment off the track, including a hound parade, terrierracing and a farmers market.

There are six races on the card and thetrainer with the most entries isFaringdon-based James Henderson, who has moved to the South MidlandsArea this season - he is a formerMaster of Foxhounds for the BelvoirHunt. He is having a great season andcomes here fresh from a double atGarthorpe on Sunday. One of hiswinners there, Otto The Great, isentered again in the Mixed Open -alongside the former NickyHenderson trained Thanks ForComing, who has been disappointingthis season in Points. Chief rivalscould be the Ollie Bush-trained raiderfrom Somerset John Daniell, and TimUnderwood's Harouet.

I asked the veteran owner-rider of thelatter about his chances. "He ran badlyat Sunday at Godstone," said Tim,"but I was pleased with his first timeout win at Parham. I'll ride him, eitherin the Mixed Open or the Veteran &Novice Riders race. Tim was not afraidto admit his age - at 67, he thinks he isthe oldest current rider between the

flags - and is hoping to notch up hisfirst win since Most Definitely at thecorresponding meeting in 2012.

The Confined race looks potentiallythe most interesting on the card. JamesHenderson has three entered, including Cocklebarrow winnerDream Garden. Midnight King wasbrought down early at Brafield-on-the-Green on his reappearance after aseason off but had useful form in2013, while another returning from anabsence is Credit Crunched, aboutwhom trainer Laura Thomas told me:"We hoped to run him at Maisemorelast weekend, but it was too soft. We'lldefinitely run him somewhere thisweekend, but he wants good ground."Most promising of all, however, isRobert Waley-Cohen's AtomicTangerine, who took on the useful MyFlora and Posh Totty in a Mares raceat Larkhill recently after just one runin a "bumper" and beat them both.I'm not sure whether the person whotold me that Robert thought it was aMaiden was pulling my leg!

The biggest entry of the day - 17 - isin the Veteran & Novice Riders race. Many are also entered in other raceson the day, including Tim Sage'sPresentandcorrect, who followed hisDidmarton Members win with a goodsecond to Working Title at Siddington.

One who is likely to be targeted at thisevent is Sivola De Sivola, a runner-upat Brafield-on-the-Green recently fortrainer Simon Gilmore and rider BenBrackenbury, who should go well ifrepeating that form.

The Henderson stable also looks tohold the key to the opening HuntMembers race, with another threeentries, although competition will bestiff. Nodforms Violet was second atDidmarton last time and 16-year-oldjockey Harry Marsh has already riddenhis first winner. Nipper John isadmirably consistent, having won sixof his twelve points and neverfinishing out of the frame whencompleting.

Tim Underwood has recent Irishpurchase Carnglave Cat entered in theRestricted race although he will not betaking the mount on a horse hedescribes as "a bit of a monkey, although he's got ability and had ahigh rating in Ireland." Katy Lyonsmay take the mount. Swingbridge willbe a danger for Laura Thomas if heruns here in preference to Kimble andDidmarton Maiden winner Roy'sGallery will be fancied for Dorset-based Michael Miller, who has a goodrecord on the course.

A Maiden race concludes proceedings.Luke Harvey's Porlock Bay is due achange of luck, having been runner-upon all three outings this season, including to Roy's Gallery last time.Bingo Tiep will be looking to improveon his Larkhill second for SamDrinkwater and Lynn Redman hasthree entries, including NothingPersonal, who showed promise beforetaking a crashing fall at Larkhill andshould improve for a change of tacticsand direction. "He's got bags ofability," confirmed his trainer, "but justneeds to channel it. He needs to beheld up and wants a left-handedtrack."

SOUTH NOTTSat THORPE LODGEMonday, 06 Aprilby Emma FormanThe annual South Notts Point-to-Point race meeting takes place atThorpe Lodge on Easter Mondaywhere 85 entries have been taken for aseven race card beginning at 1pm. family - Stonemaster, Sagalyrique andLienosus. Stonemaster won a NoviceRiders' race with Emily Rucker on thiscourse last season, while Lienosus isprobably the least likely to run havingfinished third at Maisemore Park onSunday. Sagalyrique has been afantastic Ladies horse having won nineOpens, including one at BadburyRings in February, but pulled up atHereford on his latest start whichcould be a concern. On EasterMonday last year he was narrowlybeaten by What A Laugh in a thrillingfinish. The biggest danger to a Ruckerwinner is Qoubilau who is the toprated horse. He has won two Openraces this season and is likely to beridden by Lottie Crane. The riders ofthe first three past the post will scorepoints for the Lady Riders AGA iTotalControl Championship.

Roby De Cimbre holds an entry in theNewark Livestock Market Mens Openfeature; this grey won the first race onthe card twelve months ago givingTom Strawson the first leg of a doublethat day that went on to become 6consecutive winners. Strawson who issponsored by AGHAUL Ltd HaulageContractors may ride Roby De Cimbrefor the Robinsons or another grey,Gonalston Cloud for Roger Jackson. This eight year old has given Stawsonall three of his winners this season andwould take all the beating. AndrewPennock and Dicky Collinson had awinner in the area at Garthorpe onSunday and they may be representedby King High who won a Bonham's

Mens Open at Ampton on his lateststart. However, the horse they all haveto beat would be the classy mare FruitFayre from Sheila Crows stable.Owned by Robin Lewis, Fruit Fayrehas won six Mens Opens in all and willprobably start favourite if she lines up.The winning horse will qualify for the£7,500 3m2½f Bonham's Mens OpenPoint-to-Point Championship FinalHunter Chase at Cheltenham onWednesday 29th April.

The Opening Anne Jepson MemorialConfined Hunts race is another optionfor Roger Jackson's Gonalston Cloudand he will be hoping to win the JimSeely Challenge Cup for the firstSouth Notts horse past the post. Healso has Pommier d'Estruval enteredin this race. Others to consider hereinclude Bach To The Wall who wassecond behind She's Real at Garthorperecently and Margaret Moody's OakleyConfined winner The Talking Horse.

Gerald Bailey who trains The TalkingHorse has Mr Madeit in the Simcock& Partners Intermediate race.Countess Cathcart's gelding wassecond at the last meeting at Thorpein February and then went on to win aConditions race at Garthorpe and hasstrong claims on Monday. Brian's wellwon a Subaru Restricted fairly well atKingston Blount and is looking tomove up a grade while She's Realshould put in a good run for theChatfeild- Roberts family. The winninghorse is eligible to run in the £7,0003m½f Connollys Red MillsIntermediate Point-to-Point

Championship Final Hunter Chase atCheltenham on Wednesday 29th April.

The winning horse in the Frank KeyBuilders Merchants Restricted race willqualify for the Subaru RestrictedPoint-to-Point series final at Stratfordand this could go the way ofShutthebackdoor from the Morganstable. This 5 year old ran well to besecond in the Restricted at Garthorpelast weekend and should be able totake this. The dangers includeHaughton's Bridge who providedAndrew Pennock and Dicky Collinsonwith a winner at Garthorpe on Sundaybut was suited by the shorter 2 and ahalf miles. Tim Tarratt's Quirky Kirkyshould also be able to fill a place.

Steven Astaire's Nightscape should begood enough to lose his Maiden tag inthe Fernwood Group Open Maiden;he has shown promise this season withtwo second places. Others to considerin his absence include Tom Strawson'smount No Alterations who has beenthird in Ireland and whose saddleslipped at Garthorpe on Sunday.Pauline Harkin's Exclusive Rights hasalso run with promise and should winsoon.

The closing Brydon PropertyDevelopment eight year olds and overMaiden due off at 4.30pm may go theway of Roger Jackson's Pommierd'Estruval if he hasn't run earlier inthe afternoon. Some Machine isanother with a chance and so isTrentside William from MarySowersby's Yorkshire stable.

SOUTH PEMBROKESHIREat LYDSTEPMonday, 06 Aprilby Maria EvansSituated in the idyllic village ofLydstep, the South PembrokeshirePoint-to-Point is well known forattracting a fantastic crowd on EasterMonday, and weather permitting, thisyear should be no exception.

This will be the first Point-to-Point forthe West Wales Area, and with a CrossCountry race before at 12, 85 entriesand pony racing afterwards, spectatorsshould be in for a treat.

Home grown jockey John Mathias issure to get on the score card. He hasbeen in cracking form this season andrecently chalked-up his 150th winnerbetween the flags, and after walkingaway with a hat-trick of winners lastyear, he's one you can rely on when itcomes to riding this slightly undulatingcourse. Jodie Hughes was another whodid well here last season, riding adouble after coming back from ahorrible injury to her wrist will behoping to take the Members Raceagain, this time with Seondeok.

The Mens Open looks a hotlycontested race, with a chance ofRosie's Peacock meeting Findlay's Findagain. The two have a great rivalry, butit won't be straight forward for eitherof them, with ex Rebecca Curtisinmate Anger Management entered, aswell as Mumbles Pier and Sir DuBearn, who use to be with PeterBowen.

There are 18 entered in the LadiesOpen, where Findlay's Find and Sir SuBearn double up. Last year's winnerPathian Prince will be hoping to makeit a success two years running. Theymay be joined by prolific welsh PointerChesnut Annie, Kisha King andTeenage Kicks.

STAINTONDALEat CHARM PARKMonday, 06 Aprilby Will MilburnEaster Monday sees the Staintondalereturn to their old course at CharmPark for a six race card which starts at2pm and has received a total of 75entries.

The Novice and Veteran riders racewill get things started and one whocould look classy amongst these isOpera Og; he has some good courseform and was very impressive lasttime, however Oaklands Bobby couldgive him a run for his money ifconditions are dry enough with histrail blazing tactics, but he also holdsentries at Sedgefield. NosecondChance would go well if on top formbut hasn’t been at the top of his gamein more recent runs, Shannon Silver isthe improver of the race after winningboth his Maiden and Restricted, whilstGansey hasn’t set the world alight sofar this year, but was very talentedunder Rules, most notably when hewas fourth over the National fences atAintree. For A Finish made a pleasingBritish debut at Askham Bryan wherehe simply got tired close home, heshould have benefited from that andwill be partnered by Harry Kinder.Present To You is an interestingcontender, placed in five of his last sixruns under Rules; he has an officialrating of 111 over hurdles and couldcome into the mix if fit enough afterbeen absent from the track for 10months. The second race is the Restricted andwith only seven entries it could easilygo the way of a number of runners.Apassionforfashion has plenty ofability but looks very quirky and head-strong; Barton Jubilee will have comeon for his debut run and wasunfortunate to have been broughtdown at Askham Bryan; whilstHarbour Way was returning from along absence and ran okay last timebut may need more time. Lortzing is acourse winner and should have everychance again along with Totum Chiefwho was very impressive last seasonwhen winning at Mordon; he has yetto make his seasonal debut but willmore than likely be ready to rumble. As for the Andrew Nicholls pair,Shabach should have the edge overShepherds Call if he is fully over hiswin at Askham Bryan last Sunday.Selection – Lortzing

The Mixed Open is without a doubtthe most competitive race of the daywith 20 entries. Camden, Drom,Ganbei, Junior, Railway Dillon andYoung Hurricane are the class actsamongst these, with the latter winningimpressively at the weekend but maymiss. The Michael Dawson team lookto have the best chance here withPalypso De Creek; he soundly beatJunior at Wetherby and could easilytake his career tally in Points to 15.The Dawson’s also have HisExcellency entered, a very talentedperformer on his day and was third inthe 2013 Arkle. He was last seenfinishing third in a Towcester Hunter

Chase but he pulled up on his Pointdebut, and although possibly theclassiest performer, he leaves youscratching your head a little. As for therest, Locked Inthepocket and Roycanocould fill the places, the latter isquickly on the upgrade and despitefinishing second last time possibly didnot enjoy the quick conditions.Selection – Palypso De Creek

The Confined race comes next andlooks wide open. Carlicue and HandAct Or Part could take part for LadySusan Watson and if the ground is onthe quick side, the latter could take thebeating. Impact Zone should havecome on for his seasonal debut, whilstLarkhall is another who will enjoyquick ground but looks held by HandAct Or Part on his latest run. ShannonSilver is the improving horse and looksa stayer to follow after winning at theHolderness where the second hassince won. Pebbleglen lookedprogressive last year and ended it bygetting up late to win at Witton Castle, the form of that has worked out welland should go close if fit on hisreturn. Selection – Hand Act Or Part

The first of the two Maidens is anOpen Maide and Nicky Tinkler hasthree debutants who all warrantrespect on their first appearances.Dicky Shore showed glimmers ofability under Rules, whilst On Vacationwas well fancied when second last timebehind Shabach, but looks as thoughhe will need conditions to be rattlingfast for him to win. Raasay has beendisappointing this season, along with

Smart Act who showed a Maiden waswell within his grasp last year, but itcould go the way of either StagecoachJasper who was placed under Rules, and was well fancied at Dalton Parkuntil been carried out, or William Wildwho was disputing the lead at the lastuntil coming to grief and looks likethis could be his opportunity to makea quick amends. Selection – WilliamWild

The final race is a Maiden Conditionsin which none of the runners can havefinished in the first three under anycodes of racing. Chilledbychoice isbred for the job and a couple ofintroductory performances will haveput him spot on for this so is worthconsidering. Quinto is brother to theuseful Desilvano; his jumping has beennovicey so far but looks to have anengine and could be the one to beatwith a clear round. The Dark Duchessis a daughter of the prolific mareDuchess Account but may be worthwatching for now, whilst Martha’sBenefit is sister to the useful Sail ByThe Sea who ran in this year’s Arkle atCheltenham. Selection - Quinto

VINE & CRAVENat HACKWOOD PARKMonday, 06 Aprilby Robin GrayFor more than 50 years HackwoodPark has staged the Easter MondayPoint-to-Point races for the Vine &Craven hunt. Entries this time total 67,but there will be more to entertain theexpected bumper crowd than the sixraces over fences.

Starting at noon, two 'scurries' forchildren on their ponies will kick-offthe proceedings - riders following themounted huntsman until they reachthe straight when they race for home.

Then a 'mum's leading rein 50 yarddash' gives the really young riders achance to show off their skills!

Local trainer Richard Bandey plans tohave three runners. In the NoviceRiders' race he saddles Ethiopia, owned and ridden by 20 year oldMaddie O'Meara who is a stable lassfor Bandey's neighbour trainerAndrew Balding.

By contrast top jockey Claire Hartpartners More But When in theMaiden for Mares & Fillies andHerbert Percy in the Open Maiden.

Principle feature is the three and a halfmile Ladies Open from which theriders of the first three will scorepoints for the AGA Lady Riders TotalControl National Championship.

Clerk of the Course, Bill Welling, reports the track as in perfectcondition following the meeting twoweeks ago. 'More rain would do noharm,' he says, 'and riders were pleasedwith the small alterations we made tothe course at our earlier meeting.'

Harwoods of Pulborough sponsor theday once again - their display of RangeRovers and other top models alwaysattracts the crowds.

Bookmakers, of course, trade stands, catering outlets and childrensentertainment will also be on site.
