Cutting edge … with high expectationsCullings Cosmetic and Family Dentistry heightened its investment in the community with its transition into a new, state-of-the-art building in 2010. The move was made with the patient in mind, advancing and enhancing the amenities offered to provide top-of-the-line comfort and service. From the moment a patient is greeted by the warm and relaxing office layout to the undentist-like chair experience of complimentary paraffin hand waxes, wireless headphones and cable television, a visit to Dr. Cullings office is designed to be like walking into your living room.

Family focused … and giving backDr. Cullings met his wife, Bonnie, at Loma Linda University School of Dentistry, where she was trained as a dental hygienist. Both were attracted to the school for its opportunities to give back, including clinical work for impoverished children and mission work in Mexico. They are raising their two children with the same mentality. This grounded, others-focused philosophy shows up in the day-to-day workings of Dr. Cullings office. He believes in an 80-20 ratio of listening vs. talking. The end result is patients are known, educated about their treatment plans, and never pressured.

“I always tell patients, ‘My goal is to give you the best possible treatment in your time frame,’” Dr. Cullings said.

A NOTE FROM DR. CLIFF CULLINGS:

I love Liberty Lake. It’s a savvy, cutting-edgecommunity with high expectations, but one that hasn’t lost touch with what’s truly important. Liberty Lake’s family-focused cohesive-ness and give-back spirit makeit not just flourish-ing, but genuinely friendly. These values match what sets us apart at Cullings Cosmetic and Family Dentistry, just another reason why our practice is such a proud member of the Liberty Lake community.

In the heart of Liberty Lake, a natural grass amphithe-ater connects a century’s worth of community history. Pavillion Park was named after a dance pavilion that was docked to the lake during much of the commu-nity’s resort-rich history – a hot spot that at one time attracted thousands by train to visit what was billed as Spokane’s Inland Seashore.

A replica of that pavilion is the centerpiece of the park, and not just architecturally. It is a gathering point that in the past decade-plus has brought together resi-

dents and visitors alike on many a summer night to watch a movie or take in a concert. The atmosphere ranges from the electric patriotism of the annual Fourth of July concert and fireworks display to the intimacy and elegance of the annual Spokane Sym-phony Labor Day weekend performance. National acts that have played Pavillion Park include Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Peter Rivera, WAR, Riders in the Sky, the Nelson Brothers and Leo Kottke.

A nonprofit group called Friends of Pavillion Park rais-

es money for the series, and its signature fundraiser is the annual December Holiday Ball held at the Daven-port Hotel. The end result: All the events at Pavillion Park (and a few shared among other parks in the com-munity) are offered free of charge.

That’s right, this summer you can see everything from the hit 1990s rock band Big Head Todd and the Monsters to the 2007 documentary “King Corn.” Sim-ply walk to the park, nestle into the grass, watch the setting sun light up the saddle of the mountains that

frame Liberty Lake and then take in the art and excite-ment of a performance.

And it is all, quite literally, priceless.

The concerts and movies that make up the 2010 Friends of Pavillion Park Summer Festival Series are listed among the other community events in the pages that follow.

FOr ENJOYING LIFE OUTdOOrS, LIbErTY LAkE IS HEAvEN-SENT

In a region already known as a golfer’s paradise, with stunning courses available to play at incredible rates, Liberty Lake stands out.

Where else are three golf course clubhouses all less than 5 minutes from each other? Where, if you dared, you could play 45 distinct holes … on one summer day … stretched across three immaculate courses … with-

out seeing a traffic light? Oh, and the total price for the combined greens fees? Less than seventy bucks.

Liberty Lake proves that discount golf doesn’t mean discount courses. MeadowWood Golf Course was once named one of the top 10 public courses in the state of Washington by Golf Digest. The community’s original course, Liberty Lake Golf Course, reopened in

With abundant club play and numerous charity and corporate tournaments, locals have known Liberty Lake as a golfing Mecca for decades. Players of all skill levels and ages enjoy the myriad programs, lessons

and challenges the local courses offer. Add to that the spectacular natural setting, quiet, away-from-it-all feel and friendly community, and Liberty Lake equals the perfect golfer’s retreat.

ReCReaTIonal oPPoRTUnITIes aboUnDPinch yourself. Did you forget that five minutes away is an Interstate that connects Seattle and Boston? You thought you just left that incredible restaurant, took a left at that gas station, but now suddenly you find yourself with a 360-degree experience of nature? Don’t worry, that’s a common Liberty Lake experience, whether you just stepped foot into town or have lived here your whole life. This section breaks down the places you can go for this experience – golf courses, trails, parks, the Spokane River or Liberty Lake itself. Match these destinations to the map on pages 50-51 to see just how easy – and close – it is to quite sud-denly find yourself away from it all.

MeadowWood Golf Course Address: 24501 E. Valleyway Pro: Bob Scott Opened: 1987 Par: 72 | Yardage: 6,874

Signature hole: No. 16 is a 607-yard par 5 that plays uphill to the green, which is protected by a cavernous bunker in front. Reaching this green in two shots is an unusual feat. Just don’t get cocky. You could still three-putt for par on the slippery, tiered green. Cool Slice: The MeadowWood driving range may be the only place you’ll ever feel great about hitting into a water hazard. Grab a bucket of floating golf balls and warm up before your round. For more: 509-255-9539 or www.meadowwoodgolf.com (check out the heli-tour of each hole)

liberty lake Golf Course Address: 24403 E. Sprague Pro: Kit DeAndre Opened: 1958 Par: 70 | Yardage: 6,664

Signature hole: After $6 million in reno-vations, perhaps no hole improved as much for the 2010 grand reopening as No. 8. Previously a short par 4, No. 8 grew by 170 yards to be a challenging 541-yard par 5 with a water hazard added at the tee. Cool Slice: The course remodel involved rerouting five holes, adding an addi-tional set of tees, installing a new envi-ronmentally friendly irrigation system, putting in more than 20 additional sand traps and cart paths, digging out three more ponds and planting 200 trees. For more: 509-255-6233 or www.spo-kanecounty.org/parks

Trailhead Golf Course Address: 1102 N. Liberty Lake Road Pro: Mollie Thola Opened: 1973 Par: 62 | Yardage: 4,164 (based on playing 18 holes)

Signature hole: The elevated tee on No. 1 is an experience in taking in the scenery. The beautiful green space of the course extends in front of you into the horizon, featuring the saddle of the mountains that rise above Liberty Lake. Cool Slice: While a 9-hole course, the layout allows golfers to enjoy an 18-hole experience with differing tee posi-tions for each 9. Trailhead also offers a year-round driving range and an active and affordable schedule of junior golf camps and adult group lessons. For more: 509-928-3484 or www.liber-tylakewa.gov/golf

On any given day, you’re as likely to see bicyclists, runners and walkers out in Liberty Lake as the morning sun. With more than 25 miles of multi-use trails in the community, a car isn’t necessary. Cross Interstate 90 with ease on the pedestrian bridge to connect to the region’s Centennial Trail, which runs along the Spokane River for another 30 miles in each direction.

a WalK In THe WIlDLiberty Lake resident and profes-sional photographer Bruce Andre is a frequent visitor to Liberty Lake County Park. From late February into the early summer, one of the major pulls of the park are its wildflowers.

“The flowers come in waves,” he said. “First buttercups, grassy widows and day lilies. Next trillium, water-leaf, shooting stars, skunk cabbage, woodland stars, spring beauties and leopard lilies (aka Chocolate lilies). The final round begins with larkspur, Solomon’s seal, violets, columbine, clematis, honeysuckle and monk’s hood. June has its specials with the mountain lady slippers, mariposas and wild iris.”

Andre’s favorites are the trillium and sagebrush mariposa.

“They’re all beautiful; the colors are supersaturated, the forms are arcs of serene design,” he said. “What’s not to like unless you’re allergic?”

Gateway Park Location: Near the Idaho state line, just north of Interstate 90 at exit 299. Description: This 31-acre park includes more than 3 acres devoted to man’s best friend – an off-leash dog park fea-turing water fountains for the dogs and plenty of wooded and open area to explore. Elsewhere in the park, features include walking trails, picnic facilities and lots of Spokane River frontage and access. The Centennial Trail also passes through Gateway Park.

Half Moon ParkLocation: In northwest Liberty Lake’s River District, corner of Holl and IndianaDescription: This 3-acre park is located in Liberty Lake’s emerging River District. A neat feature of the park is a sandy play-ground area. In the summer months, children (and the young at heart) press a button and water trickles out of the rocks, allowing kids to build canals and castles. It is also a common location for movies and block parties in the summer.

Harvard Road TrailheadLocation: Just southwest of the Harvard Road Bridge over the Spokane River. Description: Equipped with bathrooms and parking, this is Liberty Lake’s best access point to the Centennial Trail. From this spot, explorers can follow the trail for 33 miles to the west to Nine Mile Falls and 27 miles east to Higgens Point on Lake Coeur d’Alene.

liberty lake County Park Location: Stretching from the southeast shore of Liberty Lake deep into the sur-rounding mountains. The park entrance is at 3707 S. Zephyr Road. Description: A 2,983-acre treasure, the park offers myriad recreational oppor-tunities for its $2 entry fee (includes tax, children under 6 are free; $50 family season pass available), including: Camping: From May 26 to Sept. 15, the park’s 22 RV sites ($24/night, including admission for four) and 12 tent sites ($18/night, including admission for four) are available on a first-come, first-served basis. RV sites include water and power

hookups only; the park has a central waste station for disposal of sewage.ORV Park: A 350-acre off-road vehicle park is adjacent to the county park. Boasting 16 miles of trails, it features terrain for all skill levels of ATV and mo-torcycle riders. There is a 1,000-pound ATV limit, and no automobiles or trucks are allowed. Picnics and Playground: A new play-ground, grassy fields and lots of picnic areas are available for recreational use. Shelters are also available to rent for events and parties. Swimming: A large sandy beach and dock are open for swimming in Liberty Lake, with lifeguards on duty May 26 to Sept. 5 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., weather depending. Trails: Exploring by trail is the only way to crack the surface of this massive park. A popular 7-mile loop is known for a moderately challenging section of switchbacks, bald eagle sightings and the 35-foot waterfall at the top. Trails for mountain biking and equestrian riding run throughout the park. Wildlife sight-ings include deer, cougar, moose, elk, bear, hawk and eagle. In the spring and early summer, wildflowers are a com-mon sight as well (see page at LEFT).

little bear ParkLocation: On the corner of Garry and Broadway in The Gardens neighbor-hood just east of Trailhead Golf CourseDescription: At 0.3 acres Liberty Lake’s smallest “pocket park,” Little Bear Park features a playground area and halfcourt basketball. You’ll know you’ve found the entrance when you see the statues of – you guessed it – little bears.

Pavillion Park Location: On the corner of Molter Road and Country Vista Drive in the heart of Liberty LakeDescription: This 14-acre park is seem-ingly always alive with activity. Note-worthy for its natural amphitheater that plays host to the concerts and most events in the Friends of Pavillion Park Summer Festival Series, Pavillion Park is home to many other popular attractions. The spray park next to the playground is a summer hit with children of all ages, while basketball, baseball, soccer, tennis and even roller hockey are common sights at the park. Named after a popular dance pavilion on the lake, a model of the original doubles as a stage and large picnic shelter as the centerpiece of the park. In recent years, a disc golf course and skate park have been added.

Pumphouse ParkLocation: Corner of Boone and Simpson east of Liberty Lake Elementary SchoolDescription: Designed around a well house building maintained on site, this 0.4-acre pocket park features a play-ground and halfcourt basketball.

Rocky Hill ParkLocation: In northeast Liberty Lake on the corner of Mission and WinrockDescription: Liberty Lake’s newest park will feature 14 acres of open space as the second phase is completed as expected in 2010. Already boasting a basketball court, 5-acre field and its namesake rocky outcropping, a pair of tennis courts, a picnic area, restrooms and a community garden are planned to be in place by the fall.

The Spokane River flows 111 miles from Lake Coeur d’Alene west to the Columbia River, connecting a long corridor or communities, with Liberty Lake near the center of it all. Access the river just north and west of the Harvard Road bridge. This access point includes a gravel launch area for small boats or kayaks and is good for sun bathing and swimming. The river from this site is generally calm enough for recreational floating on inner tubes during lower river flows. The stretch of river that in-cludes the Harvard access point is rated as Class II whitewater.

With five miles of shoreline, 710 total acres and a maximum depth of 30 feet, Liberty Lake is well suited for all kinds of recreation. Boating activities of all kinds are common in the summer, and ice skaters take to the lake during the winter’s best freezes . Fishing is another Liberty Lake pastime, with rainbow trout, largemouth bass, walleye and catfish as popular species in the lake. Public fishing and boating access to the lake is from the boat launch on the north side of the lake (see more below), while public swimming is available from Liberty Lake County Park (see entry above).

boat launch, 23810 e. 3rd ave. The boat launch is owned and main-tained by the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife, and all vehicles using the facility must have a vehicle use permit through the depart-ment. Public access to Liberty Lake is available at this site beginning the last Saturday in April through Sept. 30.

If you haven’t been served a delicious barbe-cue dinner on a ranch …

If you haven’t enjoyed a front-row seat to a good shootout …

If you haven’t heard the tales of “How the West Was Sung” …

If you haven’t heard Sheriff Dusty Bicuspid’s rendition of “Rindercella” …

Well, friends, then you need to visit Rockin’ B Ranch. Those of us who have heard will be there, too. It’s that good.

Liberty Lake’s Rockin’ B Ranch is an experience in Western hos-pitality and entertainment that attracted more than 10,000 people last season. When the doors swing back open on June 11, the only Cowboy Supper Show in eastern Washington will be in its 16th season delivering western music, great food and good times to area residents and visitors alike.

play a concert of songs from great western movies of the past 70 years along the theme, “How the West Was Sung!”

And the ranch fun’s not just limited to the weekend supper shows. Rockin’ B is now offering Spaghetti Western Wednesdays, featuring classic western mov-ies and serving spaghetti and meatballs, popcorn, salad and dessert along with beer and wine.

Also new this year is four selected Sunday Socials,

where family gatherings of old will be celebrated with a variety of food, fun and festivity in an alcohol-free environment. On Father’s Day, June 20, the first in a series of all five of the McManus Comedies will be performed. Sprinkle in the popular jazz and bluegrass nights, and the ranch is always bustling with activity.

This year’s season runs from June 11 to Sept. 25. Call the box office at 509-891-9016 and find the ranch just south of Interstate 90 at Exit 299 (east Liberty Lake at the state line) or online at www.rockinbranch.com.

The Rockin’ B Ranch Cowboy Sup-per Show opens with a bang and continues with dinner and music

inside the 299-seat rustic barn.

INTErSECTION OF THE INLANd NOrTHWEST

A booming corridor of international businesses, first-class neighborhoods and breathtaking natural beauty stretches from Spokane, Wash., to Coeur d’Alene, Ida-ho. Connecting the communities: the Spokane River. Midway downstream: Liberty Lake.

Geographically, Liberty Lake is truly the “center of it all” in the Inland Northwest. Because of this, it’s less

than an hour’s drive from all the hot spots: Silverwood Theme Park, Silver Mountain Resort, Riverfront Park, Mt. Spokane, Riverside State Park – you name it. And it’s a perfect launching pad for visiting the dozens of shopping destinations, golf courses, lakes, museums and sporting events the region has to offer.

Have time to go by bicycle? Take the Centennial Trail,

In the center of it all, Liberty Lake offers a perfect launching pad for seeing the region

which stretches 60 miles, many of them meandering along the Spokane River. At Liberty Lake’s Harvard Road Trailhead of the Centennial Trail, you can head 33 miles west past the Spokane Valley Mall, downtown Spokane and Riverfront Park all the way to secluded Riverside State Park and Nine Mile Falls. Heading east, the trail immediately meets Cabela’s before stretching through Post Falls, Coeur d’Alene and finishing with a

breathtaking stretch along Lake Coeur d’Alene.

With all the first-class amenities a visitor needs but without the snarling traffic and labyrinth streets, Lib-erty Lake is the ideal home base for exploring the In-land Northwest.

MEASUrE OF A COMMUNITY, MEASUrE OF A FACILITY

The tale of the tape is only part of the story of the HUB Sports Center, but it’s a pretty cool part.

• A total of 66,000 square feet, including 50,000 in court space.

• Five regulation-sized hardwood basketball courts with electronic scoreboards on each court.

• Nine regulation-sized volleyball courts.

• Multi-purpose design allows dozens of additional uses, from an indoor batting cage to badminton, from indoor soccer to aerobics, from martial arts to meeting and office space.

• Huge lobby, concessions, locker rooms and lots of adaptable spectator seating

• Approximately 150,000 people use the facility each year, a facility located in a city of 7,000 people.

The non-profit HUb Sports Center aims to make a positive impact as big-time event facility

Page 41: Go Liberty Lake

INFOInforelocation & reference

If it’s your first time in Liberty Lake, it’s likely the HUB brought you here. The facility is host to all kinds of events, retreats, clinics and camps. It also is home to many regional, national and interna-tional tournaments, including USA Judo, the Pacif-ic Northwest Qualifier Volleyball tournament and intercollegiate wrestling.

This past season, nearby Freeman High School used the facility for its varsity and junior varsity boys and

girls basketball games. At times, the school had three games going on at once – with spectators. (And to think they could have had two more.)

The HUB is the result of a lot of physical and financial investment, and as a non-profit, it gives far more than it gets back. And every tournament, every event, is an-other winning story for the participants and the great-er community. This part of the HUB tale? It’s worth tell-ing again and again.

Named for a 19th century homesteader named Stephen Liberty, Liberty Lake was a resort destination for the first half of the 20th century. Dubbed “Spokane’s Inland Seashore,” many would take the electric train to Liberty Lake for weekend or holiday recreation. A boom in housing development north of the lake took off in the 1990s, and this area incorporated in August 2001

with a strong mayor form of govern-ment. The lake itself and homes around it remain under the jurisdiction of Spokane County. While the resorts have been replaced with private residences, Liberty Lake remains a popular regional destination for its outdoor amenities, stretching from the lake itself north through the golf courses and parks to the Spokane River.

Zephyr Lodge, pictured above, was originally built as a lodge and casino on the southeast side of the lake. Charles Traeger built it in the early 1900s and spared no expense in decorat-ing the two-story, 20-room inn. Today, it is an event center and Christian retreat center.

The events (like the Fourth of July parade, right) and amenities (like the skate park) make Liberty Lake a wonderful place to call home year-round. Even the road signs have been known to glow with community spirit (opposite page). Is that Rudolph?
