The city of Richmond’s Department of Public Utilities’ (DPU) Stormwater Utility enhances the community’s quality of living by reducing the impacts of polluted stormwater runoff to rivers and streams. Pollution from stormwater is the number one source of surface water pollution in the United States. Snow and rainfall cause pollutants such as oil, pesticides, pet waste and debris to be picked up by stormwa-ter runoff, eventually entering our waterways. In addition to encouraging residents to help, DPU’s Stormwater Utility also works to reduce stormwater pollution through operations, maintenance, and drainage improvement projects.
