By Ginger ShepherdHOOD RIVER — Big Y Fly is afishing shop hidden away onthe second floor of a gray build-ing on Industrial Street.It is unassuming, and visitorsoften feel like they found a hid-den local’s spot. But the fly fish-ing shop is an internationalsupplier of hand-tied fishingflies.The company started as aside business for founderCameron Larsen, who workedas a milkman. “I love to tie flies,” he said,explaining that he would makeflies for himself and his friends.But when his friends asked himto make flies for their friends,he decided to make a littlemoney off it. That was in the 1990s. Thebusiness continued to grow.Instead of just selling to friendsof friends, he began selling hishand-tied flies on eBay. Thatcontinued for six to seven yearsuntil a neck aliment forced himto take a break.But Larsen couldn’t stayaway. He started making fliesagain. Online, the business wascalled Flies on-line. But soon itbecame Big Y Fly and in 2006,making flies was no longer aside job. Larsen decided to do itfull-time.Doing flies full time isn’t theonly evidence of growth forLarsen and Big Y Fly. Today,Larsen has 12 employees and abrick-and-mortar store. Andthey are outgrowing their
space on Industrial Way thatserves as their show room andpacking facility. One key to Larsen’s successis customer service. As a milk-man, he learned how importantpersonal connections are andthat treating customers wellmakes a difference.“I believe in customer serv-ice,” he said. That customerservice comes with personal
responses to customer ques-tions and building a relation-ship with each customer.There are customers thatcome to the Hood River area onvacation that stop by the shop

Theirwebsite offers flies suited forfly fishing all over the world.There are flies for fishing in theUnited Kingdom, Chile,Argentina and evenYellowstone National Park.Larsen said that many peo-ple argue that Internet busi-ness doesn’t always help thelocal economy. When theycome to the shop, he said, it is achance for them to ask ques-tions and for him and the teamto share their knowledge.For many, fly fishing shopscan be intimidating andLarsen’s wants his shop to bewelcoming.Sharing knowledge isn’t lim-
ited to his shop. Big Y Fly hasseveral resources on its web-site and its Facebook page,including links to a blog(bigyflyco.blogspot.com/).While every fly is stocked inHood River and shipped fromHood River, they aren’t made inHood River. Big Y Fly out-sources to a tying facility inKenya. By doing this, Big Y Flyhas more flies, a wider varietywith new patterns and he cankeep the prices affordable.Big Y Fly isn’t the only fly
maker to do this. Larsen saidthis is an industry standard andmany of the big fly makers out-source the work to keep pricesdown.The decision is due to morethan just price. Larsen workswith a single facility to ensurethe quality of the hand-tiedflies.“There is no middleman, nodistribution,” he said, explain-ing that Big Y Fly gets the fliesdirectly from the manufacturermaking it easier to identify
problems.While outsourcing the workis a business decision it doesconnect Big Y Fly to history andeconomic development. Larsenexplained that the British intro-duced fly fishing and fly tying inKenya when it was a Britishcolony. Since that introduction,it became an industry. With everything, Larsen ispretty happy where his busi-ness is.“Happy, healthy and headedin the right direction,” he said.

Development DistrictFor the Gorge Business ReviewIn July of 2013, Nikol Clark and Randy Goetzpurchased the commercial property at 1029 MayStreet in Hood River, OR. Known for decades asthe “Klahre House,” the turn-of-the-centuryCraftsman building had housed The Next Doorand its Youth Outreach programs. When Nikoland Randy took over, the building was ready fora new chapter, and to have new life breathedinto it. The couple saw the opportunity to createtheir dream: a combination tea house and well-ness center. The Good Medicine Lounge wasborn. For the next four years, the communityaround Good Medicine steadily grew, and thebusiness activity grew and changed as well. TheWellness Center flourished with a wide varietyof health practitioners finding a home in the cozytreatment rooms. The tea house became a localgathering place, and a quiet retreat in theheights. Also in development was the Good MedicineTea wholesale program and website store. Asthis side of the business began to come into itsown, Nikol and Randy decided to embrace theirwider sales and distribution network and devotethe necessary time and resources to the successof Good Medicine Tea. They found a partner inMid-Columbia Economic Development District
(MCEDD), which financed a small business loanin early 2018 through the Columbia River GorgeOregon Investment Board fund. The influx of capital has allowed GoodMedicine Tea to take the necessary steps growits wholesale and web sales programs. Theyhave been able to support increased inventory topursue larger customer accounts. These includeexciting new partners such as Market of Choicegrocery stores, which have taken on GoodMedicine tea in all 11 of their Oregon locations,and Mt. Hood Meadows Ski Resort whichbrought Good Medicine Tea into all 8 of their on-mountain dining outlets. With increased cus-

New chiropractor uses gentle touch to ease painBy Ginger ShepherdHOOD RIVER — CharlesMcGrath has a mission: Easethe pain of those around him.And for this chiropractor, itdoesn't matter where he is.McGrath has been practicingchiropractic medicine for 30years. He has been a practition-er in Hawaii and Florida. He decided to leave theFlorida Gulf Coast to enjoy thePacific Northwest and hasopened a practice in HoodRiver on Oak Street.His journey into helping oth-ers started with a sprainedankle and introduction to anew approach of treating pain.He was curious and reachedout to a friend who was pursu-ing a career. That is all it took get him tothe Palmer College ofChiropractic.McGrath's education didn'tstop. As he treated patients forpain, he wanted to learn how tobest help those with hand andfeet aliments. He became amember of the ChiropracticHand and Foot Clinics ofAmerica.Through his training, he haslearned how to use gentleadjustments to ease pain. Healso uses the latest technologylike cold laser treatment thatcan be applied to scars.McGrath starts treatmentafter he gets a picture of what isgoing on with a patient. At hisclinic in Hood River, he can doX-rays, allowing him to have abetter idea of what is going onwith a patient. There are times, he said,when he sees something on theX-ray that is severe or there areother issues. In those instances,he will refer a patient on to spe-cialty physician because thegoal is to make sure the patientgets the right care and treat-ment.
But McGrath doesn’t stop attreatment. He believes in pre-venting injury and education.He is certified under theOccupational Safety and HealthAdministration to do trainingin injury prevention. Currently,he has done workshops withthe U.S. Forest Service andother area government agen-cies. The goal is to help workersbe safe and comfortable. “I teach wellness,” he said.The dedication to easing andpreventing pain never ends forMcGrath. He has traveled around theworld offering his services todifferent groups, especiallyindigenous people. He has beento places like Papua NewGuinea and Gabon to help byoffering adjustments. On onetrip to Papua New Guinea, hesaw about 150 people.“They were super grateful,”McGrath said, explaining thatthere is joy going someplace,doing work and knowing youare helping someone.

A procedure called microneedling does just that.Microneedling uses multiple, tiny fine needles on the very top layer of skin – the
epidermis. By doing this, it creates a microinjury to the skin that the body then heals.As the body works to repair the microinjury, it produces collagen. During the
treatment, the aesthetician will apply a serum to the area being treated. Thisincreases collagen production. Collagen is a protein found in the human body. It isthe substance found in the skin, bones and connective tissues like tendons. Collagenin wound treatment can help skin growth. Collagen can also smooth lines andwrinkles, as well as help fade scarring.
Through the process, the skin isrejuvenated – scars and wrinklesare repaired, and their appearance isdiminished.
Microneedling is used to treat acnescars, burn scars, surgical scars,traumatic scars, large pores, fine lines,stretch marks, rough skin texture andexcess brown pigment.
Admittedly, the idea of small needles poking the skin sounds scary and painful.It isn’t either.
When we administer miconeedling, we make sure the patient is comfortable. Weapply a topical numbing cream to lessening the discomfort.
During the procedure, most patients feel a vibrating sensation and that is it.There is little to no downtime with microneedling. Most patients return to their
normal activities almost immediately. They can begin wearing mineral-based makeupabout 24 hours after the treatment if they choose to.
Redness can occur after the procedure and some patients may have rednessthat is like a moderate sunburn that can last between 12 and 48 hours.
As for results, patients usually see a healthy glow the next day. The diminishedappearance of a scar or fine line starts six to eight days later. For optimal results,patients should plan on more than one treatment:
• Skin rejuvenation – three to six treatments• Scarring – three to eight treatments• Stretch marks – three to eight treatments.

Since the early 1980s, computer-aided design software (CAD)has taken over the architectural and engineering industry asthe standard tool for drafting.
Modern construction projects rely heavily on documentation supplied by designers,architects, and engineers. Construction documents are usually prepared using com-puter-aided design (CAD), containing plans, elevations, sections, working drawings,as well as related information. To survive in today's competitive work environment, it isimportant to deliver high quality outputs while meeting the demanding budget and timeconstraints that exist for every project. Using CAD and 3D modeling techniques as atool, one can save a considerable amount of time, cost, and effort by ensuring thataesthetics are as expected, and that there are no obvious clashes in design layout.
3D Modeling is the process of using software to create a mathematical represent-ation of a 3-dimensional object or shape. 3D modeling technology has broughtforth enormous contributions, improvements, and efficiencies in the architecture,engineering, and construction industries.
3D models provide a realistic and detailed, “as built” view of a building, allowingimproved communication of the proposed design to developers, engineers, architects,and clients.
3D views allow architects and designers to view the project before constructionstarts. Clients can also view how their projects may look before investing in them.This tremendously helps clients to envision and adjust the space, define problems,adjust room sizes, select the right materials, furniture, and so on.
Unlike 2D designs, which often require more steps to deduce design information,3D designs are almost instruction-less and span language barriers.
3D modeling is also used in surveying and topographic mapping to create three-dimensional graphic representations of surfaces. These are also known as digitalelevation modeling or digital terrain modeling. These are very useful for surfaceanalysis in relation to things like surface drainage and site design.
3D modeling and rendering has drastically changed the dynamics of architectureand engineering by allowing design professionals from many fields collaborate onmultiple levels while focusing on a common and easy to understand concept.
