    GNVT0: Structuralism and its Discontents

    GRADEMARK REPORT

    GENERAL COMMENTS

InstructorThe language in the essay is consistently strong

and clear, and you demonstrate a command of a

suf f icient number of sources by bringing in many

references. To improve your writing, it would be a

priority to spend more time thinking about how to

st ructure your argument. The overall aims o f the

essay remain a litt le unclear, and the text doesn't

seem to have a natural flow of def initions,

explanations and claims. The individual paragraphs

could be const ructed better, and you could well use

more space to properly introduce the concepts and

arguments t hat you draw f rom other texts. If you

read the text another time af ter writing it, you shou

be able to get an impression of whether or not a

general reader, even when they are academically

qualified, is able to f ollow the flow of your

argumentation. I get the impression that a lot of the

text was written f ollowing the order in which certain

points were made in the ref erence texts. Naturally, i

might help if you would think of a st ructure of the

argument you want to make first , and then f ill it in

with the appropriate material f rom reference texts .

Since your writing an understanding of the key

points of st ructuralism seem st rong, I'm convincedthis is only a matter of the amount o f time and

ef f ort you are able to dedicate to the essays.

    Comment 1Missing title

Comment 2This is clear and articulate, yet ideally f irst couple of chapters would also explain what the aims

    of the essay are.

    PAGE 2

Comment 3This is clear and goo d use of a number of references, but at this po int a reader may well be

unsure f or what purpose all these concepts are explained.

Comment 4How exactly does a f ormal analysis dif f er f rom a structural one? And do you mean to claim tha

Washburn does a f ormal analysis o r a st ructural analysis? It is lef t unclear..

    PAGE 3

Comment 5I'm not entirely convinced self -ref lexivity and subjectivity is a typical feature of st ructural

analysis, but perhaps Hodder has another view on this. The rest o f the paragraph seems

    unconnected to the opening.

Comment 6Correct - since you opened with Saussure you might make that connection t oo . And this

def inition of f ormalism could have been introduced earlier.

Comment 7It might be worth not ing that Radclif f e-Brown to o held several pos itions over time, which are

dif f erentiated in To temism. Also , I don't think you make entirely clear the theoret ical dif f erence

    between RB and Levi-Strauss.

Comment 8You could have used more space to explain what bricolage is. N.b. LS does spend a lot of time

working out the genealogy of myths, part icularly in the Americas.

    PAGE 5

Comment 9This is poo rly written, you need to explain what you mean with "system of communication",

"exchange units of relations", "a need f or individuals to socialize across.."

Comment 10N.b. the "savage mind" title is a pun in its original language, though you may dif f er about

    whether that absolves him.

Comment 11Interest ing, but you need to explain to reader what "materialisation" means in this case.

Comment 12It's brilliant that you are making your o wn interpretation in the end and bringing in a surprising

ref erence such as Fukuyama. You could have spent a litt le more time explaining why that 's a

good example, and how a st ructuralist /post- st ructuralist reading of Fukuyama would dif f er, in

relation to your concern about t he poss ibilities o f resistance.
