Swing with the times at Primrose Farm Barn DanceBy CAROL HAGGAS

[email protected]

There’s no better way toswing into spring or get a (Lin-dy) hop on summer than withthe second annual Barn Danceon Saturday, May 16 at Prim-rose Farm. With music onceagain provided by the Chicagoarea’s sublimely smooth JakeSanders Quintet and dance les-sons courtesy of Batavia’s ownTri-City Swing dancers, thisevening under the stars at thefarm promises to be a jive-hotstep back in time.

Not one to rest on the lau-rels of last year’s exceedinglypopular inaugural event, Man-ager of Farm Programs andInterpretive Services LauraJohns and the staff at Prim-rose Farm have kicked thingsup a notch for this year’shigh-stepping night of fun andfood and fancy footwork.

But for anyone whose foot-work may be less than fancy, the folks from Tri-City Swingwill once again be providingdance lessons to help dancersget in the – well, swing ofthings. The farm will open itsdoors at 6 p.m. to allow plentyof time to check in beforedance lessons begin.

“One of the best thingsabout this program is thedance lessons,” said Johns.

Tri-City Swing instructorswill gather all participantsinto two concentric circles todemonstrate the steps, thenlet the dancers work with thepartner standing oppositethem. The practice progressesround-robin style, so dancersget to dance with a number ofpeople before the actual BarnDance begins.

“It’s a great ice breaker,”Johns said. “It gives you achance to meet new peopleand have a lot of fun trying tolearn the dance steps.”

Learning swing dance canbe that much more fun if onedresses in costumes of the era.Anyone wearing period appro-priate clothes from the 1930sand 1940s can choose to partici-pate in a costume competition. This People’s Choice contestwill reward creativity andauthenticity in capturing theera through vintage clothesand accessories, so get readyto raid grandma’s closet or siftthrough area thrift stores.

Just as taking a break fromthe rigors of seasonal chores

at events such as barn danceswas a popular form of enter-tainment for farm familiesback in the 1930s, so was thechance to show off the fruitsof their harvest and talents intheir kitchen with a pie-bak-ing contest. In the spirit ofkeeping it authentic, guestsat this year’s barn dance areencouraged to show off morethan their Lindy Hop bybringing a homemade pie tocompete for bragging rights.During band breaks, pies willbe judged based on appear-ance and taste. Winners willbe announced during the finalbreak of the evening. At thatpoint, let the eating begin!

“The pies will be servedon a first-come, first-servedbasis,” Johns said. “Last year, this part of the evening wasa big hit, and hopefully we’llhave enough for everyone to atleast have a little taste of thesehomemade delicacies. It makesfor a fun, community event.”

But if you’d rather passon the pie, there are plenty ofother food options added tothe evening’s fun and enter-tainment. A large bonfire willbe built on farm grounds, andwhile enthusiastic observers orenergetic dancers are taking abreak from the fox-trotting andjitterbugging they can headover to the fire for s’more fun.

That’s right – all the ingre-dients for making everyone’sfavorite fireside food will beon hand – graham crackers, marshmallows and hunks ofchocolate. And what would abonfire be without a weenieroast? Event planners willhave hot dog kits available– hot dog, bun and all thefixings to roast over an openfire. And, as always, peanuts, popcorn and sodas in old-fash-ioned glass bottles will be partof the evening’s refreshments.

Dancing in the barn can bean energetic pursuit, so whendancers need to cool theirheels, tractor-drawn wagonrides around the farm fieldswill give them a chance tocatch their breaths.

“They’ll get to see the farmin a whole new light,” Johnssaid.

Twinkle lights and kero-sene lanterns give the farmyard a festive glow, and vasesof fresh-cut flowers also add tothe party atmosphere.

And lest one forgets thatall this food, fun and musicis taking place at a workingfarm, several of PrimroseFarm’s resident animals willbe overlooking the fun as well. Most of the farm animals willbe accessible for petting in thelots and pastures closest tothe barn, including Ernie andOtto, the farm’s newest calves.

Check in for the BarnDance begins at 6 p.m., withTri-City dance lessons start-ing at 6:15. The Barn Danceproper will start at 7 p.m. andrun until 10 p.m. Advancetickets are $10 per person, while those purchased at thedoor are $15 each. Food andbeverages are additional.

To learn about the evening, including information on thepie-baking and vintage costumecompetitions, visit the PrimroseFarm’s Facebook page or callPrimrose Farm at 630-513-4370.

Award-winning actress encourages students to think bigBy ASHLEY SLOBODA

[email protected]

G E N E V A – G e n e v asixth-graders probably didn’texpect to get homework fromAcademy Award winner Octa-via Spencer.

The actress, who visitedboth Geneva middle schools onApril 9, instructed the studentsto create a time capsule bywriting a letter to themselvesdetailing their most outlandishdream. It could be wanting tobe a bigger star than Justin Bie-ber or wanting to be a doctor byday and a writer by night, shesaid during a presentation inGeneva Middle School South’scafeteria.

“This is your biggest hopeand dream,” Spencer said.

Date the letter, she told thestudents, place it in a sealed en-velope, hide it and – on bad days– think of that dream and dosomething, even if it’s readinga book or talking with someone,to work toward it.

Outlandish dreams can hap-pen, she said, noting hers as agirl were to become an actressand writer.

She achieved both.In addition to appearing in

such movies as “Insurgent” and“The Help” – for which she wonan Oscar – Spencer is the authorof the “Randi Rhodes, Ninja De-tective” series for children.

The series – which startswith “The Case of the Time-Cap-

sule Bandit” and continues with“The Sweetest Heist in History”– combines her love of martialarts, mysteries and science ex-periments, she said.

In response to a student whoasked her what inspired her towrite, Spencer said, “You guys… in a roundabout way.”

She wanted to make read-ing fun for children, just as the

Encyclopedia Brown bookschanged her reading life, shesaid, noting struggles with dys-lexia.

She said it is difficult to saywhich she likes better: writingor acting.

“I can’t imagine a worldwhere I don’t get to do both,”Spencer said.

Students questioned her

about various aspects of writ-ing, such as her writing pro-cess, what she does to combatwriter’s block and whether shebases any of her novel’s ele-ments on real life.

Spencer said her settingsand characters are “very, veryloosely based” on real life; shetakes walks when she’s stuck;and her process includes hav-ing a beverage nearby, turningoff her phone for a few hoursand using an outline.

Then, she said, she sits “andhope things come to me.”

She complimented thestudents on their “seriouslyamazing” questions, noting Sa-vannah Guthrie from “Today”should watch out.

“Her days are numbered,”Spencer said.

When asked whether Gene-va Middle School South was thefirst school she spoke at, Spen-cer said no.

“But the most fun, how aboutthat?” she said.

Anderson’s Bookshop in Na-perville sponsored Spencer’svisit.

CHRONIC EYELIDINFECTION

Chronic eyelid infection (“blepharitis”) isoften caused by seborrheic dermatitis, which ischaracterized by excess oil secretion and frequentlyaffects the scalp. This oil buildup, which leads todandruff on the scalp, causes localized irritation, redness, burning, itching, and dryness near the eyes. This problem can be treated at home, initially withthe placement of warm compresses on the eyelidsfor about two minutes, followed by subsequentreapplications of the compresses to loosen the oiland scales. Next, the eye should be washed with acotton swab moistened with diluted baby shampoo(one part shampoo to 20 parts water), followedby warm compresses. If this once-daily cleaningregimen does not prove effective within two weeks, the eye doctor should be consulted.

P.S. An untreated bacterial eye infection can leadto “ulcerative blepharitis,” which can cause eyelashloss, eyelid scarring, and corneal inflammation.

I love the tiny house movement.I love the efficiency of it. I love the

flexible use of space. I love the thingsthat fold out from the wall, and whodoesn’t love miniature things – socute! But when I think about it formy lifestyle, it would be darling – forabout the first week. Then, after trip-ping over my family during that week,I’d start thinking about an addition ormaybe a new house. When I was in architecture school, I

had a professor by the name of KayaArikoglu. He would say, “You can’t afford the

mansion, but you might be able toafford one room of that mansion.”I love that philosophy – it really

works, and I have used it over andover again throughout my architectur-al career.About 14 years ago, I designed our

vacation home on a pretty tight bud-get and I used this philosophy. Yes,I had to make sacrifices – I couldn’thave the grand kitchen, the palatialbathroom, the separate dining room, the to-die-for master bedroom. I had

to make the decision that one room,“the great room,” was the priority andeverything else was subordinate tothat idea.

I had to use a simple structure (thinkbarn). You will save a lot of money us-ing a simple structure, all those fussybump-outs cost money. Quite simply,

that is why barns have always beenbuilt that way. They wanted a lot ofspace – for little money.

How to live large in a tiny house

Architect Julia Caswell Daitch used several design features in her tiny vacation house tomake it feel larger.

An effective way to maximize space in asmall house is to use lots of windows.

When I went to a mason to get a bidon my house project, he said, “Why doyou want the footprint so small – I’ve builtgarages bigger than that!” The answerwas simple, I didn’t have the money tomake it bigger. But what I knew was thatit would live large, because I wouldn’tdivide the space into little compartmentslike most homebuilders do. The ene-my of tiny houses is interior separationwalls. Yes, it is important to close off thebathroom and maybe the bedroom, buteverything else has to share the greatspace or it won’t be a great space be-cause the budget will be eaten up by allof those rooms.Let’s just say, for argument, that an av-

erage dining room is about 14 by 14 feet;a small kitchen is 14 by 10 feet; a smallliving room is 14 by 16 feet. If you addthose all together, you get a room that is14 by 40 feet – that’s a pretty good-sizedpalatial room.Height is also really important in making

this a truly great space (why the standardceiling height in this country is 8 feet isa concept I will never understand). Eightfeet is OK in small rooms, but when theroom expands in plan it needs to expandin height, too (although you don’t needto make it as tall as I made mine.)My “great space” has a sleeping loft

above, which is not totally private, but

separate enough that it feels prettysecluded from the first floor; a small bath-room and a kitchen to the right of thedining area. The walls of the bathroomand kitchen do not go all the way up, sothat you feel like the entire footprint ofthe house is all one room. The other really effective thing I did to

maximize the space was to use lots ofwindows. That way I get to sort of stealthe exterior space, too, for my house.I’ve always thought that a great way toexpand a small house was to make theedge of the property provide the privacyfor the house. Say, have a fence anddense evergreens line the edge of theproperty (or maybe just the back yard) orjust get a big piece of property, as in mycase. Then build the house with lots of

French doors and windows, so thatone can see right out to the edge ofthe property. It’s almost as if the wallsvisually “fall away” and the tree line isthe visual boundary of the house. Nowthe house is just made up of interior andexterior rooms. And the best news of all is that this

design philosophy doesn’t just work fornew construction. It works for renova-tion, too. Architects are adept at ma-nipulating the current layout of a space, which can really expand the spatialfeeling of an existing house.By just tearing down a few walls and

ceilings (I love reclaiming attic space)and connecting the interior visually

with the exterior, one can make a smallhouse live large.

THE WASHINGTON POST

Peter Walsh, organizingexpert and author of newbook “Lose the Clutter, Losethe Weight,” was the guestlast week on The WashingtonPost’s Home Front online chat. Here is an edited excerpt.

Q: How do you nicely tellin-laws to quit bringing theirextra stuff into your house? There are so many items Ihave no place for or don’tlike.Peter Walsh: It’s tough, as

you don’t want to offend them, but you also need to be honestand straightforward with them.Tell them in a calm way thatyou love them, but all thethings they’re bringing overare overwhelming you. Decidetogether on the best course ofaction; donations, perhaps?

Q: I would like to install aclothes storage system. Isthere one that’s easy anddurable to install that you canrecommend for a closet? Ineed one that’s upright withstorage baskets.Walsh: Check out most home-

goods stores. I think hangingcanvas in-closet systems aregreat, expandable and veryadaptable. Decide first howmuch space you have and gofor it.

Q: I go to antique shows andwonder why my grandparentsand parents didn’t keep someof this stuff. So, I have kept

things. Now I find my adultchildren have no sentimentali-ty. Will they wish I had kept itif I dispose of it? Or is this theway it should be?Walsh: Chat with your kids

and see what their thoughtsare about this. What you findimportant, chances are theywon’t; that doesn’t mean theydon’t love or appreciate you.Decide together on what “trea-sures” they would like from youand don’t worry about the rest.

Q: I’m plagued by accumu-lating piles of paper, whetherit takes the form of mail, kids’schoolwork and art, receiptsand invoices, materials frommy job, etc. I always seem tobe drowning in the stuff. Howdo I make it stop?Walsh:Many people are

uncomfortable with shred-ding or discarding paid bills. Ihave seen homes where everyreceipt and paid bill for theprevious 10 years is strewnthroughout the house. If youwant to keep paid bills and/orreceipts, you need to keep thepaperwork under control.Start by purchasing a

12-month expanding file. Whenyou pay bills for, say, June, place them in June section ofthe file. You’ll come back toJune 12 months later. If youhaven’t needed to look at thebills in that time, it’s highlyunlikely that you’ll ever needthem again.Shred them.

The same system works forreceipts.Or a simple, very low-tech

solution to organizing receipts isto use two bankers’ spikes. Getin the habit of cleaning receiptsout of your wallet or purse daily.Place receipts on one of thespikes as they come in. Whenone spike is full, start the other. If you haven’t needed any of thereceipts in the time it takes youto fill a spike, chances are younever will. When you fill up thesecond spike, throw out all thereceipts on the first.

Q: I was given expensivecrystal stemware by my moth-er-in-law for my wedding. Idon’t use or want it but can’tget rid of it without startingWorld War III. How do youstore breakable things youdon’t want?Walsh: Bubble wrap. Solid

cardboard box. Attic. Or nego-tiate a truce and find someonewho can use and love it.

Q: What is your formula forkeeping clothes? How often

should I be getting rid ofexcess?Walsh: You should only have

three types of clothes in yourcloset: clothes that fit younow, clothes that you love andclothes that get you compli-ments when you wear them.

Q: I’m a 30-somethinggetting married this year, andfor various reasons I dislikethe idea of registering for aboatload of new householditems, let alone formal china oranything like that. However, Ido love to cook and entertain,so I feel a little like I shouldn’tgive up on a registry altogeth-er. Do you have any advice onhow to approach this?Walsh: A wedding registry

can easily get out of control. It’sgreat that you have such a goodperspective on it. Choose onlyitems that you love and knowyou’ll use. Don’t stress! Andplease send me a piece of yourwedding cake!

Q: I was wondering if youhave had success with yourapproach to de-cluttering forpeople who are hoarders. Iam a hoarder and feel com-pletely overwhelmed with my

stuff. Is one of your booksmore suitable for approachingde-cluttering with this mentalcondition?Walsh: Check out David To-

lin’s book “Buried in Treasures.”It’s a great place to start. Youcan bring about change, butyou need to be gentle on your-self and seek help from thosewho know what they’re talkingabout. Also try the National Associa-

tion of Professional Organizerssite, www.napo.net, for organiz-ers who specialize in hoarding.

Q: I have a box of orphanelectronics cords: coaxialcables, A/V cables to connectTVs and DVD players, phonecords, ethernet connectorsfrom old modems. What canI do with these? Recycle? Do-nate? Trash?Walsh: If you don’t need

them, pack them up, saygoodbye and send them off to adonation center.

Q: What do you think ofhaving yard sales? Are theygenerally worth the time andeffort, or do you think it wouldjust be better to donate thestuff I’m getting rid of?

Walsh: Yard sales are greatfor getting rid of lot of stuff fast, but you have to accept thatyou’re not going to make muchmoney. If you have patience, a nice

day, some extra time and agreat sense of humor, then havea yard sale. If not, donate.

Q: Do you believe that eBay

is a good platform for riddinghomes of clutter?Walsh: EBay is a great place

to assess the value of things.(Generally things are worth lessthan you think.)To make money, use eBay or

something similar. To get rid ofclutter fast (you’re not going tomake much money, though), trya yard sale.

Big plans for Radiant Raw Foods in St. Charles

By ERIC [email protected]

ST. CHARLES – As a formerbreak dancer, St. Charles residentDeecee Chung said he knows theimportance of fueling up properlybefore doing a routine.

He hopes everyone, includingdancers, will develop better eat-ing habits as a result of his newlyopened business, Radiant RawFoods, at 1519 E. Main St., Suite1100, in St. Charles. His business, which opened in February, sellsdehydrated fruits and vegetables.

Chung, whose actual nameis Daniel Chung, dehydratesbananas, pineapples, apples andother food using a commercialdehydrator that he designed. Hehas a background in designingheating systems.

“We’re getting the tempera-ture below 112 to 118 degrees,”he said. “At that temperature,it’s the perfect temperature tojust take out the water contentand to preserve the juice andthe enzymes and nutrients andvitamins. Up to 98 percent ofthe nutrients and enzymes areretained.”

Because the enzymes arepreserved, the body is able todigest dehydrated food easily, hesaid. Dehydrating the food alsointensifies the sweetness of it.

“It intensifies five to 10 times,”he said. “It’s great to see kidschoose this over candy some-times.”

He is partial to the dehydratedpineapple and banana that hemakes.

“A lot of the banana chips thatyou find are fried and very salty,”Chung said.

It takes between 36 and 72hours to dehydrate fruits andvegetables. Chung will shop forgroceries up to three times a day

to ensure that the fruits and veg-etables he buys are the freshestpossible.

“The fresher the fruits andvegetables are, the better theytaste when they are dehydrated,”he said.

Beyond the health aspects ofdehydrated food, he sees it help-ing solve the problem of worldhunger.

“We throw away so muchfood,” Chung said. “I have re-ceived bananas that were goingto be thrown away. You just cutaway the bad part. You can do somany different things. You couldblend them with different fruitsand vegetables and make a fruitleather/fruit roll-up. It’s healthy, and tastes amazing.”

Chung also wants to make itconvenient for the general publicto dehydrate their own food, andhe wants to design a dehydra-tor that people can use in theirhomes.

He thinks that a dehydrator inone’s home should be as common-place as a dishwasher. Right now,he is working with some largecorporations that build consumerproducts.

“It’s just a great way to notthrow away food,” he said.

More than just a health foodstore, Radiant Raw Foods also is acultural center. Local musiciansperform there, along with DJs

and break dancers from all overthe country.

In addition, the walls of thebusinesses are lined with artmade by local artists. Chung is anartist himself.

As he noted, some of the breakdancers and artists and musi-cians that perform at RadiantRaw Foods have never eaten anorange.

“It’s been quite an experi-ence to introduce an orange or apineapple to somebody, and it’sdehydrated,” he said. “They loveit.”

Putting on his hat as an artist,Chung said he wants RadiantRaw Foods to introduce peopleto the fundamentals of art andshow them how to express theircreativity through art. The busi-ness will hold a “Hello Kitty” artexhibit/workshop from May 8 toJune 8.

There will be an openingreception for the exhibit from 6

to 10 p.m. May 8, and there willbe workshops from noon to 3 p.m.May 16, 17 and 30. The workshopswill be for all ages, and there isa $10 cost per workshop to coversupplies.

Chung also has hopes to es-tablish a high-level break dance/dance school at Radiant RawFoods.

“It doesn’t need to be in Cal-

ifornia or New York; it could beright here in St. Charles,” he said.

Radiant Raw Foods is openfrom 1 to 7 p.m. Mondaysthrough Saturdays, with variedhours on Sundays. Informationis available at its website, www.radiantrawfoods.com, by calling847-778-7980, or by visiting itsFacebook page, Dehydration_Nation.

Business offers dehydrated veggies, fruitsalong with hosting artists, musicians, dancers

GENEVA – For those look-ing for a comfortable place tokick back with friends after ahard day of work, Geneva hasa fine new option.

Barrel+Rye, at 477 S. ThirdSt., suite 184, in downtownGeneva, occupies the spacethat formerly housed MichaelAngelo’s Deli. With its fourbig screen TV sets, the eateryresembles more of a sportsbar, but the quality of the foodis many levels above whatone would expect at such anestablishment.

The low level lighting inthe restaurant also adds tothe restaurant’s intimate andcomfortable feeling.

After looking through themenu, my dining companionand I decided to start out withthe creole wings appetizer, which turned out to be an ex-cellent choice. The wings hadjust the right amount of kickto them – spicy, but not hotenough to burn your mouth.

For our entrées, she optedfor the grilled cheese sand-wich served on rye bread, while I chose the Black+Blueburger. Before we had evenfinished our appetizer, ourentrees arrived, showing how

fast the service is.My companion was eager

to bite into her sandwich, andshe wasn’t disappointed. Sheenjoyed how the three cheeses– Wisconsin cheddar, Egmontand Havarti – complementedeach other. She also liked thefact that her order of frieswere crispy, not soggy.

My Black+Blue burger wascooked to perfection. In fact, steam was still coming off theburger as I bit into it.

Being a mushroom lover,I appreciated the fact thatthe burger was loaded withthem, so much so that theywere oozing out of the burger.

The 50/50 brisket and sirloinburger was brimming withfreshness and flavor.

The aged New Zealandblue cheese only enhanced theburger’s flavor.

Speaking of cheese, thethree-cheese baked mac andcheese is a must addition toany order. If you thought yourmother made the best maca-roni and cheese, your opin-ion might be changed afterordering the mac and cheeseat Barrel+Rye.

A word of caution, though,to those wanting the check outthe restaurant. Barrel+Ryedoesn’t take reservations, soyou might want to call to findout whether there are seatsavailable.

24 SPORTSSeeking approval

By KEVIN [email protected]

Athletic directors and IHSAofficials predict lacrosse willsoon come unshackled from itspresent holding pattern.

That should be no surprisefor a sport long dubbed as thefastest-growing in America, even though the status symbolof official IHSA sanctioninglooms the same way it has foryears.

“I still am of the mindsetthat we are going to have a voteon one day making it a sport,”Geneva Athletic Director JimKafer said. “But right now, it’skind of stuck in neutral.”

IHSA spokesman Matt Tro-ha, also the organization’sboys and girls lacrosse admin-istrator, bears proof.

“We really didn’t do any-thing with it this year,” hesaid. “Just with so many oth-er things going on, it wasn’tsomething our board was con-sidering adding.”

In August 2013, the IHSAboard of directors announcedthe adoption of a boys and girlsstate series beginning in thespring of 2014 if schools couldmeet a participation quota of 65boys teams and 40 girls teams.

Troha said girls programssatisfied that figure last season, but there still were fewer than65 boys programs statewide.

Relative to other regions, theKane County Chronicle arearemains well-represented in la-crosse this spring. St. CharlesEast, St. Charles North, Bata-via, Geneva, Marmion, St. Fran-cis and Wheaton Academy offerboys programs while the St.Charles schools form a girls co-op and St. Francis has a team.

To be sure, that’s a muchlarger scope than in October2009, when the IHSA tentative-ly approved a boys and girlsstate series beginning in thespring of 2011, a developmentthat ultimately fell short.

“The disconnect still lies inthat some programs, they’resort of loosely associated withthe school and not quite runlike the other programs are,”Troha said.

Among Tri-Cities schools, those relationships vary, withGeneva sparking the charge.Kafer said Geneva has “em-braced lacrosse as basically aquasi-sport” for a few years, registering athletes throughthe athletic department, offer-ing facility usage and publish-ing rosters and schedules onits athletics website.

“We can’t say it’s a sport be-cause it isn’t IHSA-sanctionedyet, but we do everythingpretty much as we do for anysport,” Kafer said.

“It’s self-funded, but ourboys volleyball is self-funded,too [apart from transporta-tion]. The only difference is oneis an IHSA sport and one isn’t.”

This spring, District 303 ad-opted each of St. Charles’ boysand girls high school lacrosseprograms into its operation, marking the first time thesport came under the umbrel-la of the athletic department,East Athletic Director MikeSommerfeld said.

St. Charles programs re-main members of the club-based Illinois High SchoolLacrosse Association and its

state series – the IHSA licensesgame officials – but otherwiseenjoy the same advantagesand school pride as other ath-letes on campus.

“We’ve been really excitedthat we’re a school sport,” Northstudent Charlotte O’Sullivansaid of the girls co-op, which isset to play its first varsity homegame at East’s Norris Stadiumnext week. “It makes transpor-tation easier and practices easi-er. So it’s nice to be recognized.”

Sommerfeld called the devel-opment a natural progression.

“What we saw is that wejust had so many kids playingthe sport in this community, and they weren’t allowed toplay at their school and theyweren’t fully recognized asbeing a sport that we figuredthat it’s not going to go awayand we should bring that in,”he said. “We should bring thatin and make them a part of theathletic programs.”

At Batavia, first-year boyscoach Kyle Sullivan, whodoubles as a co-director of Na-perville-based New Wave La-crosse, said there’s a “kind ofmodified” arrangement with

the athletic department.A school liaison assists the

program with such amenitiesas access to buses and reserv-ing classrooms for film study. In addition, the team hasscheduled a few home gamesat Bulldog Stadium, a biggerspace than its usual setup atRotolo Middle School.

“That’s a big deal for us,”Sullivan said. “A lot of schoolsdon’t get that.”

Although communicationwith the athletic department isgrowing, the Batavia programhasn’t escaped encounteringits share of club-centric issues.

Recently, Rotolo’s field wasunplayable because of wet con-ditions, sending the Bulldogsscrambling to play a “home”game at Naperville’s Commis-ioners Park.

“That kind of fun stuff stillhappens to us, but I still thinkit’s getting better,” Sullivansaid.

On its website, IHSA.org,the IHSA identifies boys andgirls lacrosse as “emergingsports,” an official-soundingqualifier that’s on par with thefamiliar “fastest-growing” tag

that applies to lacrosse’s na-tional reach.

IHSLA.org lists 87 pro-grams statewide, including 34under “A class” qualificationfor more established and tra-ditionally competitive teams, per its description. The restfall under the “B class” andtend to be newer programs.

The IHSLA website alsostipulates that a school is notobligated to make lacrosse partof its varsity offering if theIHSA should sanction it. Per-ceived competitiveness and adistrict’s potential financialsupport are considerations.

Troha keeps in contact withIHSLA president Rich Martin, and relays Martin’s interest inhelping guide lacrosse towardits latest Illinois benchmark.

“I think that he’s very goodabout representing their mem-ber schools,” Troha said. “Hetells me the majority, theywant that IHSA sanctioning. They want the IHSA statetournament. I think he justwants it to happen at the righttime. He doesn’t want to see itrushed through and have pro-grams left behind.”

St. Charles East’s Jack Russell (51) celebrates one of his goals in the Crosstown Classic match May 17, 2014, at Geneva High School. IHSA officialMatt Troha said lacrosse’s possible ascension to the status of an IHSA-sanctioned sport is in “a holding pattern” as more schools statewideseek boys and girls participation.
