Gnostic Corner moves into the next stage of its evolution. We are constantly wel-

coming new friends and saying goodbye to those who have been with us. Each person, regardless of how long they spend as part of our business community, leaves their special mark. This issue we say goodbye to Rhonda and Julita from Gnostic Enchant-ments and wish them magical futures. The Angels and Faeries have found their way back to Gnostic Forest. The space formerly inhabited by the Enchantments has grown and will become Gnostic Village Wear and the next chapter begins… Look out for more fashion as we recommend you to “be your own kind of beautiful!”

Gnostic comes from the ancient greek word gnosis, which means knowledge gained through personal experience.

GLM 12

PERSPECTIVE

These words are subjective, and that means they are open to interpretation by the

individual. We all see things differently. Because our life experiences influence the

way we look at the world each day, we are bound to see things from different angles.

In most cases we view our own behaviour as normal and everyone else’s is a variation on that. It gets really hard at times to understand some people’s point of view, certainly their behaviour – even their ethics.

We tend to deceive ourselves by thinking that we understand certain people, we feel that because they have a familiar point of view to ours they are right, yet this just means their experiences have been similar to ours. Maybe they grew up in a society with a similar code of ethical behaviour, or their family followed the same principles. We can’t ever completely understand the motivations of others. Gnostics understand that all – absolutely ALL– conflict comes from misunderstanding.

It certainly makes life easier if we mix with people who have values like ours. We know what to expect from them and we also know what we can get away with. However, real spiritual growth comes when we dare to step outside our own ethics, morals and principles and try understanding a completely different culture.

An easy, less disturbing way to do this is to read about civilisations from the past. Try to really get a feeling for their behaviour and understand what motivated them – why they accepted the things that they did. Then see them as your own ancestors, imagine how the changes that came with time had an influence on them and eventually you end up in the 21st century in your own life. You might be able to see that the threads of influence through time change what is acceptable behaviour.

Things that we once thought of as absurd or ridiculous now seem not so far left field when we see the influences that happened along the way to lead us to our current understanding. And remember we will be judged by others for our limited views also.

Everyone is doing the best they can at all times, given the limitations they have that are caused by fears, doubts and lack of under-standing.

When we accept the things that influence other peoples’ ethics, morals and principles we can live without conflict. And when we realise that ours are based on opinions we might even be prepared to let them change with time.

When we got here three years ago the ground was just Woy Woy sand, not one

living thing in it. Syringes, broken bottles, rub-bish and sand – that was the soil! Now we’ve got big fat worms and micro organisms.

The block was originally zoned for commu-nity use and then about 5 years ago the council advertised that they were considering selling it. I wrote to them and said ‘Why don’t we put a community garden here?’

The Council grant was $5000 and we’ve had other fantastic local support. Margin’s Mush-rooms have been very generous. Our shed was donated by Woy Woy Mini Storage. Gnostic Mana Cafe give us their coffee grounds which

we use as mulch and in compost – blueberries especially love the acidity they provide. We’ve also been collecting scraps every week from Mary Macs, around 500kgs a year of green waste! That why the garden’s like it is – we’re feeding it all the time.

There should be one of these in every suburb. When you see what’s happened recently with

It’s a bright Thursday morning in Woy Woy and a dedicated group of volunteers is hard at work on the block of land they have transformed into a thriving food garden. We spoke with Jill Meredith about the project.

contaminated berries from overseas, and onions bringing in a superbug from the US. It’s about food security – know-ing where and how your food is grown is important.

My own background is as a naturuo-path, so I’ve always been interested in the relationship between diet and health. Just growing and using your own herbs is a great place to start.

There’s usually a group of us here on Thursday mornings and we have a working bee on the last Sunday of the month. Come down and give it a go, everyone’s welcome!

We’re trying different things all the time. We recently recycled some old donated spa baths to use as ‘wicking’ beds, which are like giant water well pots. We’ll also use one for a water gar-den. Our bush tucker garden is coming along – there’s Finger Limes, Davidsoni-an plum, native Hibiscus.

We’ve had some funny things happen. A woman came through with a shopping trolley one morning. I said ‘hello, how are you?’ She just said, ‘Where’s your flat leaf parsley?’

Another guy came with a list for a stew. I gave him some rosemary, and other herbs. I said ‘you know, if you stick that in the ground it’ll grow.’ I like to think we’re planting little seeds out there in the community!

The other day a woman walked up to me and took my hand. She said, “This is such a beautiful space.”

That really made my heart sing.

Breath deeply… Fill your lung… Take your atten-tion to your legs and then your toes. Wiggle

them gently in your shoes… Note how they feel – sore, tired or really heavy? Congratulations! You have just experienced mindfulness meditation.

We have been aware of the physical benefits of meditation for some time.n lowers blood pressure n lowers the blood lactate (reducing anxiety)n decreases tension related pain (headache,

insomnia, muscle and joint problems)n improves immune systemn increases energy levels

Now neuroscience has discovered, through MRI technology, that there are actual signs and changes in grey matter. In 2011 a team of Harvard researchers (Psychiatric Neuroimaging Research Program) at the Massachusetts General Hospital completed a study which showed significant changes in brain structure.

The team studied a group of people who were participants in a 8 week mindfulness meditation class. MRI scans were taken two weeks before

BRAIN CHANGER the class commenced and one week after. The meditators were required to meet once a week and meditate once a day for at least 27 minutes. They were given guided mindfulness meditations on audio. On completion of the course they were required to fill in a questionnaire.

After studying each person’s MRI the research-ers reported significant changes in grey matter density in the Hippocampus, which is the learn-ing and memory centre and also in the structure associated (right Supramarginal Gyrus) with self-awareness, compassion and introspection.

Britta Hölzel a researcher at MGH said, “It’s fascinating to see the brains plasticity, and that by practicing meditation we can play an active role in changing the brain and can increase our well-being and quality of life.”

Imagine a world where we are all self-aware, empathic and aware of our own actions and emotions – and how they affect our friends, work mates, families, communities, country, world and universe. Hmm… Excuse me, I’m off to change my grey matter!

MIND

WHAT IS Gnostic CorneR?

What began in 1998 as Gnostic Forest –- a small retail shop with a spiritual theme, selling crystals, jewellery, inspirational books and a bit of ethnic clothing – has grown into what is

now known as Gnostic Corner. It’s a trading co-op with 10 businesses including organics, a cafe, healing centre, yoga school, flower shop, jewellery and crystals, hemp and bamboo clothing, a takeaway cafe along with the original Gnostic Forest.

Each of the businesses has its own theme and is independently owned, we are all family or friends and we work together co-operating, not competing. We share resources and cross promote. In the 16 years we have grown as a destination for both the locals and the tourists. All of this during the GFC.

While the rest of the world was worrying about how to survive, our small business collective was busy helping each other and creating a village atmosphere for our community to enjoy.

If one of the younger businesses is struggling there is someone with more experience to mentor them and offer solutions. We also produce our own magazine quarterly to offer little pieces of inspiration and show what’s new on the corner.

It all looks very deliberate, but the truth is it wasn’t! Just by having faith in a benevolent universe we are prepared to take risks and time has proven that by supporting the other guy we are really strengthening our entire field. – Mary Holstein

ORGANICS

Raw nuts are loaded with protein, healthy fats, fibre and important minerals like zinc,

magnesium and calcium. However nuts also contain natural chemi-

cals to stop them from sprouting. This enzyme reduces the body’s ability to absorb certain nu-trients properly and forces the human digestive system to work overtime.

Soaking the nuts makes it much easier to digest and removes the phytic acid and enzyme inhibitors making them the perfect snack once activated.

Starting the sprouting process takes a bit of preparation time but once you get into a routine it is easy.

GO NUTS!

It is especially important to use good quality organic nuts, sea salt and filtered water. You can dry them in the sun, oven (between 135 and 150 degrees) or a dehydrator (at 120 – 135 degrees).

There are charts are available online giving you a guide to how long you should soak each variety of nut or you can purchase your nuts already activated – go nuts!

Caroline Cardier is owner of Gnostic Organics. See more at www.gnosticorganics.com

If you eat nuts everyday then you really need to activate them!

PERSPECTIVE

This cycle will take you forward in a reluctant kind of way You will burn up a lot of energy in the process, defending old ideas until the new reality can be resisted no longer.

A Gnostic attitude to this dilemma is to remind yourself of limited perception – we do not have the capacity to comprehend all of reality. We are all limited by what we see and by what we understand of what we see.

A good example might by the view from the windows of a very tall building. At the bottom you can only see across the street. You can see the traffic is grid locked and it’s hard to know which way to turn. You enter an elevator and as it climbs you are able to see further. You now understand where all the traffic is coming from. The next floor brings even higher understanding – you can even see into the future by observing a storm heading your way. By being willing to give up your position on the ground, you received more information and now you are better able to decide the right action

There is another guy travelling beside you, he is much taller and he can see further away. He tells you that there is a herd of elephants stampeding. You could reasonably argue that he is wrong and that you are right, there are no elephants. If you are not prepared to accept his information you could choose the wrong road out of town and become an elephant stepping stone. Just because you can’t see them from your limited perception does not mean they aren’t there.

So in life each day, decide how right you want to be. Allow others to be right in their own way. Offer information to those who are prepared to accept it, and don’t waste precious energy trying to convince anyone that you are right, because you are only right at the level you are on. Be brave enough to give up beliefs in order to continue to grow. Like the guys in the buiding, the more you are prepared to see new things the easier it is to choose the future you want.

Mary Holstein – Founder of Gnostic Corner in 1998, which continues to grow through expanded vision

The problem with being right is that you never grow or learn. As soon as you think you know

something you stop accepting new information about it.

If scientists thought they knew all about the universe, we would probably still think our galaxy was the extent of reality. If doctors thought they knew all about the body and healing we would never see new medical procedures. Only when we question and look further do we discover new things.

In our relationships with each other there are often disagreements. Each person thinks that they are right, and there is often some passionate debate on just how right each party is. Communi-cation is lost because the concept of being right blocks any new information.

To accept a new point of view, you need to give something up. It’s not possible to progress in your growth unless you are prepared to leave behind some of the things that you had previously felt right about.

Once you have a new view on an idea you find it hard to remember why you ever thought differently. This opinion becomes the new right and you could be tempted to go to lengths to defend this.

SOULSPEAK

Your name and important belief? Greetings, our names are Willeen (asian descent, jnr elder) and Russell Light Eagle (Wanlbi Ao’jan’jan - Lakota descendant, Peace Elder). Russell is of the Eagle (Wanbli) nation, Willeen has been accepted by her Lakota elder into the Bear (Mato) nation, we have been also both ac-cepted into the Wolf clan tribe. Russell has also been acknowledged by the Maori people and accepted as a blood brother with Uncle Larry of the Gumbaynggirr Nation (Australian Aboriginal Elder). We both up hold a responsibility, not only

to ourselves, but for the people. People meaning all beings/creatures great and small. Your religious/spiritual belief and its lineage? We both believe in the Great Spirit (Wakan Tanka -God). Willeen was raised as a Buddhist through her asian heritage and Russell was raised honouring and respecting nature and the land he was raised on through his parents. We both believe that the Buddhist ways are very similar to the Native American beliefs, as they both respect all things. Russell and Willeen believe that the Ancient beliefs must return to modern day society with prayers; honouring and respecting what we take, as well as what is given. It is the only way to bring hope back to the people. How did you come to your beliefs? We both were born into our beliefs; we re-searched and experienced all different religions as we grew, gaining more insight to fulfill our soul. Native American culture and belief has

Anger

Someone who is angry is someone who doesn’t know how to handle their suffering.

They are the first victim of their suffering, and you are actually the second victim.

Once we can see this, compassion is born in our heart and anger evaporates.

We don’t want to punish them any more, but instead we want to say something or do something to help them suffer less.

– Thich Nhat Hanh

lead us to understand more about a race of peo-ple who shared and cared for not only for them-selves but for others; including the animals, plants and the cosmos. As the Lakota people say, “Mituk’ye o’yasin (We are all related)”.How have your beliefs shaped you personally? Our beliefs have shaped us into two individuals that have come together as one, to live a simple life style, to respect a culture that has power be-yond what we see; a beauty practised daily with prayers. Native American culture and beliefs illuminates your soul from within, to bring a peace that emanates out towards others. What are your challenges spiritually? Our spiritual challenges are to deal with the negativities that emanate from others, that are aimed at us. The structure of modern society and greed has created a lack of faith within peo-ple. Therefore to keep our faith up, is a challenge, not only for us, but for others. A challenge is to live in the present moment, keeping it simple, to live by your own rules; to remember the past for its knowledge, though not to keep reliving the past and to not chase the future, as the future is not yet created until you set your goals in the present for the future. Live the truth, know the truth, understand the truth, don’t compete with another, but to share and to Walk in

Harmony/Peace (mani kici’la wo’wah’wa) with all throughout the Universe. Now that is a spiritual challenge to fulfill. How does your practice take form? Our practice took form when Willeen self-pub-lished her own oracle cards named, “Walk in Harmony (mani kici’la wo’wah’wa) Oracle Cards” in 2014. It displays a lifestyle on how we live, a way that is adopted by us and it is not be taken lightly. Prayers everyday; keeping healthy with the foods we eat; exercising to keep our mind, body, spirit and soul balanced; respecting and honouring Mother Nature and the most important of all – is to believe in one self.To what end do you practice your beliefs? We made the decision early on that we weren’t going for volume – we wanted a

quality product.I remember meeting with one flour rep and

asking for sponge flour, which is a very fine grade flour. He said ‘Okay then you’ll need Additives B and C…’ I said ‘No I’m not putting those in my cakes.’ The conventional mindset then was you just had to do it that way.

Russell and I take a holistic approach. We don’t want to be some big anonymous company. We want to have a relationship with our customers, and for them to know that we care about the cakes we make.

Gnostic Mana Cafe was the first to ask for ve-gan cakes. Initially it was a challenge for us. Then I figured out that the best way to bake vegan was to think ‘What can I cook with, rather than what I can’t.’ It became easier from there. We devel-oped carrot and chocolate cupcakes specifically for them. We’re thinking about adding another vegan flavour – we’ve got a lot of ideas.

One of our funniest disasters was a cake for my sister. The movie ‘Titanic’ had just come out and she wanted the ship as her cake. We needed water around it and we thought ‘Let’s use blue jelly…’ Throughout the night that cake slowly slid into the jelly…but hey – it was the Titanic!

As far as visual expectations, Facebook has changed everything – not to mention the evil of Pinterest! Now everyone has their wedding boards, and no part of that is based on how much it’s going to cost! When we were first starting out I found it very stressful to ask “What’s your budget?” But really that’s got to be the starting point. We work out what’s possible from there.

I now focus on research and development into new cakes and Russell is in charge of stock control. We keep things very efficient.

CONSTANT CAKES

My advice to someone starting out in cakes is to put as much energy into learning how to run a business as you do developing your recipes. If you don’t do your paper work you will fail.

Don’t use cheap ingredients – it tastes cheap. If you go with the best, people will follow you.

Our customers are lovely, and it has become a generational thing. Just the other week I did a 15th birthday cake for a boy I did a christening cake for. We get pleasure out of that.

Constant Craving Cakes are at 3/2 Enterprise Close, West Gosford. Find them on Facebook.

For over twenty years, Julie and Russell have been creating specialty cakes with their team on the Central Coast.

“Yes,” said the teacher “I know of some med-icine.”

As per the custom of that time, patients or their friends would provide the herbs required, so she asked what herbs he would want.

“I want some mustard seed,” he said, “but you must get it from some house where no family member has died.”

And so again she went from house to house. All she asked had some but when she enquired as to whether they had experienced a death she found the same answer at every turn.

At last, not being able to find a single house where no one had died, her mind began to clear and she returned to the Buddha.

“Have you the mustard seed?” He asked.“My lord,” she replied, “I have not. The people

tell me that the living are few, but the dead are many.”

Then he talked to her on that teaching, the impermanence of all things, till her doubts were cleared away, and, accepting her lot, entered on to the path of understanding.

M y little cat friend died the other day. Far from sleeping in that sweet floppy way

he used to, instead his little body had stopped sustaining him while we were outside painting.

There are no prizes for awesome coping skills when something you didn’t expect happens. Shock barges in and affects everyone differently. Some go quiet. Some become angry or upset. Inevitably there is the flailing and activity of reaction and response.

We scooped him up and raced his sweet lifeless body to an emergency vet seeking a cure that didn’t exist.

The one balm the vet nurses were able to apply was presence, kindness and comfort. They spoke gentle words and were not afraid of our tears. They would not let us pay anything for their time and so we turned home again, noth-ing solved, but with some peace.

There was once a woman whose young son died unexpectedly. In shock she carried her boy from house to house asking her friends and neigh-bours for medicine.

A medicine man said to her, “My girl, I have no such medicine as you ask for, but the Buddha can give you medicine. Go to him”.

She went to Gautama Buddha asking for his help.

Emily is getting better at impermanence but still has a permanent position in a few of the shops on Gnostic Corner.

The Body–Mind COnneCTiOn

The body and mind are inseparable!

Whatever happens to your body will be reflected in your mind, whatever happens in your mind will be reflected in your body.

If you suffer from an emotional or stressful blow it will have a subsequent effect on your body. It shows up as tightness, tension, imbalance or a blockage of subtle energy (prana).

If you injure yourself physically it will have a subsequent effect on your mind, sometimes the mental effect of a physical injury is far worse than the injury itself.

The very essence of Yoga practice is to bring the body and mind together as one entity that is focused on and tuned into the elusive present moment.

The conscious and mindful physical movements of Yoga asana (exercise) keep your body healthy creating a dynamic vehi-cle for you to live your life.

Techniques such as meditation, relaxa-tion and breath work (innercise) have been developed to control the incessant stream of self-chatter of the mind, allowing you to find inner peace.

Yoga embraces a wide number of prac-tices that create wellness of both body and mind, to simplify exercise for a healthy body – innercise for a healthy mind, connected through the breath.

To quote James Joyce in his novel The Dubliners “Mr Duffy lived a short distance from his body.”

For all round wellness, make the body-mind connection.

Cold level laser therapy (CLLT) is a painless, sterile, non-invasive, drug-free treat-

ment which is used to treat a variety of pain syndromes, injuries including Trigger Point Inactivation.

Healing with the use of light is not new. Light therapy was reported to be effective for many conditions by Hippocrates. With the develop-ment of the laser and its special properties, using light as a treatment has gained more popularity. This is because we can now use specific wavelengths of light and give accu-rately measured doses of energy directly to the appropriate treatment site, which was not possible with other light sources.

Cold laser therapy uses low level light direct-ed at the skin allowing the photon energy to penetrate tissue where it interacts with various intracellular biomolecules to help restore normal cell function and stimulate the bodys natural healing processes. It is particularly useful when conventional therapies have been

inaffective or when acceleration of healing from injuries is needed.

Low level lasers supply energy to the body in the form of non-thermal photons of light. Light is transmitted through the skins layers (the dermis, epidermis and the subcutaneous tissue or tissue fat under the skin) at all wavelengths in the visible range. Light waves in the near infrared ranges penetrate the deepest of all light waves in the visible spectrum. When low level laser light waves penetrate deeply into the skin, they optimize the immune responses of our blood. This has both anti-inflammatory and immunostimulate effects. Light transmitted to the blood in this way has positive effects throughout the whole body, supplying vital oxygen and energy to every cell.

DO CRYSTALSWORK?

ROCKS

Wve know they exist, we can see and touch them. But when people ask if they “work”

they are usually enquiring into whether the crystal will have an effect on someone’s life, health or state of mind.

To understand this we need to explore the ways crystals are currently being used for energy.

Piezoelectricity is the name for the electric charge generated through applied pressure to materials such as crystals and was first discov-ered in the 1800’s by Jaques and Pierre Curie.

Modern science has found useful applications for this such as the production and detection of sound, generation of high voltages, electronic frequency generation and ultra fine focusing of microscopes.

It has found everyday type applications such as radios, the ignition for lighters and push-start propane barbeques, and the mechanism in quartz watches. It’s even been accepted into au-tomotive production through piezo-controlled injection valves in combustion motor engines!

How does that translate into “crystals have energy that can affect us?”

Electromagnetism states that physical in-teraction between electrically charged parti-cles creates electromagnetic fields. We are all made of atoms that vibrate and we accept that crystals can conduct an electrical charge we can begin to understand how these two fields of vi-bration or electricity may influence one another.

A crystal, gem or mineral – which has its own frequency oscillations – vibrates within our own energy field through the physical law of reso-nance and creates a larger vibrational field.

This has the potential to affect the nervous system and information transmitting to the brain. These interconnected vibrations are just beginning to be measured and it seems as if we are on the precipice of amazing understanding about the interconnectedness of all systems.

As always, personal research and experiential evidence are imperative to finding truth.

This article is just one window of perception about a much larger potential reality.

Crystals wont fix things that you have cre-ated, although they may inspire you to make changes and better choices by affecting your energy field!

See what crystals you feel drawn to. See how you feel when you hold them. If this all feels a bit weird to you simply pop them on a shelf and admire the beauty created by this awesome earth we inhabit .

Come in and find your crystal at Gnostic Rocks.

TRAVEL: CAMBODIA

Cambodia is an experience. There is a warm, humble nature to the

people of this country which still carries the scars of war and genocide.Cambodia has been experiencing conflict either from outside aggressors or from warring factions within, pretty much since the beginning of recorded history.

In Australia we have a unique situ-ation were our borders are defined by sea. Other countries have borders that are not so permanent and they shift and change with each invasion.

Modern day Cambodia is bordered by Vietnam in the East and Thailand to the West. The situation for now is peaceful as the people continue to re-build from the extreme Pol Pot Regime which killed millions and destroyed the education and health systems. Foreign aid is essential, and education is the key to a progressive future.

Gnostic Forest employee Barb and her partner Chris have taken up residency in Seim Reap in north western Cambodia near the famous Angkor Watt Ruins. They are working with independent schools to provide English classes to children whose families are poor and mostly employed in subsistence farming.

Recently I made a quick visit with local explorer Michelle Kinanne as my travel buddy to get a first hand look at Barb’s new projects.

One of the schools is well established and has attracted much assistance from visitors. They have a well stocked library, a water filtra-tion system that the children can use to take clean water home in bottles. There is a newly constructed pig pen to provide regular income and the roof to the long classroom was recently thatched so they can hear their lessons during the heavy monsoon rains.

In contrast the other school we visited was barely existing. The teachers have not been paid regularly for some time now and the art classroom lies dormant through lack of funds. The children still arrive eager and hopeful of an education. Pross, the Buddhist monk who has taken responsibility for the school, is unsure of the future.

During our short visit we explored the oppor-tunity of importing some locally made hand-crafts for sale and then using the profits from this to fund the school. This will provide the double benefit of industry and education.

The people have such open hearted gratitude for any assistance. The smiles from the children remained with us long after we left.

Mary – always looking for an opportunity to explore parts of the amazing planet.

What Ate My Mum – and will it eat me?AUTHOR: MARCUS LOVETT • RRP $20.00 • Available @ Gnostic Forest

Stuntman and Olympian, Marcus Lovett, used to think it would be cool to die in a ball of flames. Now, with a family of his own he wants

to reach 100. To make it, Marcus has to figure out why cancer killed his healthy positive Mum and in doing so finds a valuable key to unlocking health and longevity.

The audience will relate to the story by comparing their life choices to those of both Janet and Marcus, making them ponder their own mortali-ty. This story is not about pointing blame or finding a miracle cure for can-cer, it’s about how we choose to live, with consideration to environment, diet, exercise, lifestyle, attitude and how we cope with major life events.

This is a new take on a story that touches every one today. This award winning film offers insight into understanding the causes. – MH

No Mud, No LotusAUTHOR: THICH NHAT HANH • RRP $19.00 • Available @ Gnostic Forest

Thich Nhat Hanh is a buddhist and a popular author living in Plum Village France – some of his previous titles includes Mindful moments

and the Heart of the Buddha’s TeachingsThe secret to happiness is to acknowledge and transform suffering, not

to run away from it. In No Mud, No Lotus, Thich Nhat Hanh offers practices and inspiration for transforming suffering and finding true joy. Some-times suffering can feel so bad, we try to run away from it or cover it up by consuming. We find something to eat or turn on the television. But unless we’re able to face our suffering happiness will continue to elude us. With his signature clarity and sense of joy, Thich Nhat Hanh helps us recognize the wonders inside us and around us that we tend to take for granted and teaches us the art of happiness. – MH

Intense encounters from powerful people who prey on your vulnerability may occur this month. Be aware not to be coerced into underhanded dealings or subversive tactics. Stand your ground as you can bring insight and balance the power to make you strong. You must be honest with yourself as you transform weakness within, healing past grudges and grievances.
