PERSPECTIVE

These words are subjective, and that means they are open to interpretation by the

individual. We all see things differently. Because our life experiences influence the

way we look at the world each day, we are bound to see things from different angles.

In most cases we view our own behaviour as normal and everyone else’s is a variation on that. It gets really hard at times to understand some people’s point of view, certainly their behaviour – even their ethics.

We tend to deceive ourselves by thinking that we understand certain people, we feel that because they have a familiar point of view to ours they are right, yet this just means their experiences have been similar to ours. Maybe they grew up in a society with a similar code of ethical behaviour, or their family followed the same principles. We can’t ever completely understand the motivations of others. Gnostics understand that all – absolutely ALL– conflict comes from misunderstanding.

It certainly makes life easier if we mix with people who have values like ours. We know what to expect from them and we also know what we can get away with. However, real spiritual growth comes when we dare to step outside our own ethics, morals and principles and try understanding a completely different culture.

An easy, less disturbing way to do this is to read about civilisations from the past. Try to really get a feeling for their behaviour and understand what motivated them – why they accepted the things that they did. Then see them as your own ancestors, imagine how the changes that came with time had an influence on them and eventually you end up in the 21st century in your own life. You might be able to see that the threads of influence through time change what is acceptable behaviour.

Things that we once thought of as absurd or ridiculous now seem not so far left field when we see the influences that happened along the way to lead us to our current understanding. And remember we will be judged by others for our limited views also.

Everyone is doing the best they can at all times, given the limitations they have that are caused by fears, doubts and lack of under-standing.

When we accept the things that influence other peoples’ ethics, morals and principles we can live without conflict. And when we realise that ours are based on opinions we might even be prepared to let them change with time.

We’re still new to all of this. We’ve been here for just on two years. I haven’t been a

farmer all my life – I’ve worn many hats, and had lots of different jobs. For a large part of my life I was writing database software for the web.

It comes to a point where you feel like you want to do something that really gives you sat-isfaction. Writing software is all well and good but after a while it became meaningless.

This is something I’ve always wanted to do. I used to visit some friends of mine who have been growing food for thirty years. I loved what they were doing, so I saved enough money and took the plunge. They have acted as mentors for me.

I went into all this with an open mind – I knew anything could happen. It’s a leap of faith.

I didn’t want to enter it with pessimism. I’m not an optimist – I like to think I’m a realist – but at some point you’ve got to say there will be good fortune as well as stuff ups. Like one

day last year I was in the house and a big storm came through. ‘A bit of rain’ I thought, ‘great’. Then I heard it getting louder – it was hail. I ran outside thinking the greenhouse would be shredded – my first crop in tatters. Luckily the plastic roof is very resilient, the hail just bounced off.

It has been an extraordinary lifestyle change, and a big financial one. But growing something, seeing it ripen and then eating your own food – as well as providing food to other people who get excited about it – gives you more on so many levels than just a pay packet.

PRODUCERS

The word “passionate” is thrown around a lot these days, but as Paul and Kate Foster show us around their Fountaindale farm it’s clear that it fits perfectly here. Paul spoke with us about their organic journey.

GROW

SAVE OUR SOIL

biodynamically the soil is everything…”

Right now we’re growing Lebanese cucum-bers and two different varieties of tomatoes, Roma, and the heirloom Tigerellas. Last year we did Celery, Kale and Bok Choy. I’m experiment-ing with rock melons and eggplants. If they work well, we’ll offer them in quantity next year.

I’m also putting in some Australian Finger limes – they’re an amazing native citrus which only fruit once, maybe twice a year. They’re a small brown banana shape, but inside they have these caviar-like citrus burst – delicious.

We have egg laying chooks, we don’t raise them for meat. The chickens are Kate’s domain. I actually prefer the geese. I think it’s because everything I do here has to have what I call the ‘chicken factor’ taken into account. If they got into the crop, they’d just demolish it – hence the chicken wire everywhere.

One thing you learn with farming is that the seasons don’t wait for you. If you don’t do it today you’re going to be screwed tomorrow! You’ll be sowing for winter and all of a sudden it’s spring. You have to be organised. Like if it rains I can be in the greenhouse, and then when it stops I can dig outside because the soil won’t be so hard.

When you grow organically and biodynami-cally the soil is everything – maintaining and en-hancing it is the most essential thing you can do. We don’t just stick tomatoes in again and again. That leads to problems and ultimately depletes the soil. You have to give back.

For example, just before we put in the tomato seedlings we had mustard growing as a cover crop. That is then lightly cut in and ploughed back into the soil to improve soil fertility and help combat any soil born diseases. Then you put on compost, leave it for a while to decompose.

One of the principles of Permaculture is to have different components of the farm doing more than one thing , and that you should elimi-nate waste. That’s what we do here.

I started out thinking: ‘Wouldn’t it be great if we can use all the waste from the animals?’ So we’ve got fish in two tanks and we collect their waste and a third tank with Comfrey breaking down into Comfrey ‘tea’. Comfrey is a great natu-ral source of calcium, magnesium and potassium. Then there’s also the bath water from the geese. That all filters down to a collection tank and then gets pumped up around the corner to mix with our irrigation water.

In another area we have a bed of coffee grinds and manure on one side. Then we take that soil into another bed, add worms so we have a worm farm. Instead of that rain water just running

One thing you learn with farming is that the seasons don’t wait for you…

Page 7: Gnostic iss8

G 7

away, I thought ‘why don’t we capture that too?’ We lifted the bed up, put a grill under it and a

tray for collection. We call it Worm Juice, and the value of it is so important to our operation here.

I end up with several types of fertiliser which are all organic. That means a greater chance that I’m going to get the right balance of macro and micro nutrients, amino acids and algae into the soil.

Why pay a lot of money for synthetic pesti-cides, fungicides and fertilisers which ultimately just deplete the soil? I get a better result from having a diverse range of poultry and plants all here for free. It just makes sense.

In the end it comes done to soil type, growing organically, building up your soil, looking after your soil. If your fruit and vegetables taste good, you know you’re doing something right.

Are you ready to be kind to yourself?

Self-compassion and its close relative self-ap-preciation can significantly reduce the toxic

effects of self criticism. Such effects can range from dissatisfaction with life and low level unhappiness to full scale anxiety and depression.

We live in an individualistic, competitive and materialistic culture which impacts individual personality with powerful expectations of achieve-ment, success and being above average. There is the constant threat of not being good enough, not attractive enough, not wealthy enough or just not being “enough” period.

Rejecting these cultural messages and learning to be our own best friend is a wonderful antidote to the negative effects of self-criticism. In her highly researched book on self-compassion, Dr Kristen Neff explains that although it may seem as though being self-compassionate would lead to laziness, de-motivation and passivity, actually the reverse is true: self-compassion decreases the pain of self-criticism and increases optimism, calmness and happiness. (Kristen Neff, 2011)

Other research has found that being self-com-passionate can reduce procrastination and lead to quickly getting back on track with activities and

SELF COMPASSION creating a meaningful life. (Linda Graham, 2014) Being self-compassionate is not about being

narcissistic either. On the contrary, self-compas-sion helps us better understand vulnerability and self-criticism as part of the human condition: we are able to be more empathetic and compassion-ate in connecting with others.

Choosing a mantra that expresses the essence of self-compassion is a great strategy. The following verse is Dr Neff’s personal mantra:

This is a moment of suffering.Suffering is part of life.May I be kind to myself in this moment.May I give myself the compassion I need. There is power in self-compassion and self-ap-

preciation and it’s only a thought or two away. A note of caution: The process of self-compassion

involves acknowledging and noticing our suffering. If that suffering is intense and overwhelming it may not be wise to confront the reality of the suffering alone and without support. The most self-compas-sionate strategy in these circumstances may be to seek professional support and counselling.

MIND

WHAT IS Gnostic CorneR?

What began in 1998 as Gnostic Forest –- a small retail shop with a spiritual theme, selling crystals, jewellery, inspirational books and a bit of ethnic clothing – has grown into what is

now known as Gnostic Corner. It’s a trading co-op with 10 businesses including organics, a cafe, healing centre, yoga school, flower shop, angel and fairy shop, jewellery and crystals, hemp and bamboo clothing, a takeaway cafe along with the original Gnostic Forest.

Each of the businesses has its own theme and is independently owned, we are all family or friends and we work together co-operating, not competing. We share resources and cross promote. In the 16 years we have grown as a destination for both the locals and the tourists. All of this during the GFC.

While the rest of the world was worrying about how to survive, our small business collective was busy helping each other and creating a village atmosphere for our community to enjoy.

If one of the younger businesses is struggling there is someone with more experience to mentor them and offer solutions. We also produce our own magazine quarterly to offer little pieces of inspiration and show what’s new on the corner.

It all looks very deliberate, but the truth is it wasn’t! Just by having faith in a benevolent universe we are prepared to take risks and time has proven that by supporting the other guy we are really strengthening our entire field. – Mary Holstein

ORGANICS

Six months ago we held a series of “ferment-ed workshops” which introduced me to the

delights of fermented and cultured foods. Now I reap the health benefits and enjoy the depth of flavour of these foods every meal.

Many cultures around the world have been fermenting foods for hundreds of years to eat and preserve. Before refrigeration became availa-ble in Europe, fermented vegetables provided a vital source of nutrients during the winter.

Fermented foods are the single most important foods we can introduce to our diet. They contain a power house of probiotics to enhance digestion, increase vitamin and mineral levels, help improve bowel health, and improve immunity.

Join the Fermenting Revolution

Having good gut bacteria helps us obtain a proper balance and enough digestive enzymes to absorb more of the nutrients in the foods we eat.

It’s exciting to see so many quality products are now available. By incorporating fermented foods into your daily diet such as sauerkraut and Kim-chi, (cultured vegetables) kefir, kombucha, sour dough, yoghurt you can assist your digestion and have it bursting with beneficial bacteria to boost your digestive health.

Caroline Cardier is owner of Gnostic Organics. See more at www.gnosticorganics.com

What are you doing here?

You’re here to write love songs for future generations.

You’re here to nourish the earth that will feed your children’s children’s children.

You’re here to evolve humanity just that little bit more.

You’re here to be the brother’s mother’s father’s cousin who did that wondrous thing,

created that incredible legacy.

You’re here to fill a page in the history books, because the future will always have

need of a history, and we turn to these pages for guidance, for examples.

You will die one day.

And your name will be added to the ledger that some cosmic poet holds

Your works numbered, referenced, cited. (Sighted.)

Your life is always seen.

Be a history that moves humanity forward, feed it with the tagine of a lifetime.

You are slow food simmering to feed the hungry of tomorrow.

We are the loaves and the fishes.

We become inexhaustible, infinite.

PERSPECTIVE

The “nothing ever goes right for me” mantra will need to be replaced with “I get what I create.”

Consider there is some great enormous cosmic mixing bowl. It’s not a col-ander like the one you use to strain the veggies, it’s a big fat bowl with no holes – nothing escapes until it’s combined into an experience. The thoughts and beliefs you have about yourself and life in general are ingredients that get stored in this mysterious container.

The Universe is unable to provide you with something that you didn’t supply the ingre-dients for. So if you want to be an accountant, even if you sign up for the course and do the physical time required to achieve this qualifica-tion. If you didn’t believe you could understand maths, no teacher in the world is going to be able to make it happen. Your belief will under-mine you.

We’ve all heard of cases where people diagnosed with an illness have rejected the prognosis and recovered. Self belief can be a powerful force, and conversely if you believe you’re in trouble you know what to expect.

The people who think they will find a parking spot and also believe they will, get the parking spot.

The kid who listened to his parents talk about how he/she is not that good at sport, never learn’t to reach and improve. While the other kid’s Dad said “if you want it badly enough you will go do it.” That kid grows into an adult who puts positive expectations into his cosmic mixing bowl. And his Universal Crea-tions are amazing.

The thing to remember is you are guaranteed to get only what you think you deserve.

Mary Holstein – I like to change my recipe for life and have new experiences as often as I can.

It can be easy for people feel that they are at the mercy of others – the government, the

system or some invisible God. It can seem like you have very little free will when it comes to what’s going on in your life. Even the traffic has an effect on whether you’re late to where you are going.

Some days it doesn’t seem to matter how hard you try, you still feel like a pinball bounc-ing around as a result of other people’s actions.

New age thinkers talk about the Universe creating their world and Religious people refer to the will of God.

What if we suggested that you ARE the cre-ating Universe and you ARE your own God.

Wow! That’s a lot of responsibility! Before, when you felt powerless, you also

felt no responsibility. When something went wrong you could just shrug and moan about how nothing ever goes right for you. Most of the time no-one would challenge you, because many of the people you surround yourself with believe the same thing – that the most we can expect is to make an attempt at surviving all the powers that be.

If we are going to insist that you are the creator of your own experiences we’d better also explain how that works and give you a few tips about conscious creating, so that you can enjoy the things that appear from this magic creation.

Now that you know that your experience is your own fault, you may as well take control and create things that you want to experience.

GLM 12

SOULSPEAK

Your name and important belief? I am Sofan Chan. The belief that I hold highly is “By your own efforts, waken yourself, watch yourself; And live joyfully. You are the master” – Buddha. Your religious/spiritual belief and its lineage? Constantly seeking the divinity within myself - do what divine does, create heaven on earth for myself and other. I love Buddhism philosophy and psychology as a body of universal dharma (cosmic law and order). Truths liberate the heart. How did you come to your beliefs? Constantly seeking, studying and applying the Dharma in my own life. Everyone has its own truth and when truths are present in life. The feelings of ‘grace’ and going with the current are the light radiating from the inside out.How have your beliefs shaped you personal-ly? Whenever difficulties arise I watch myself, watch the thoughts come and go specially the negative ones, waken myself to the lessons within the difficulties. In doing so, I shine more light into darkness. There is no enlightened being, there is enlightened moment by moment by our own effort. What are your challenges spiritually? It is easy to love thousands people and be in the oneness space when we are in the meditation retreat. In everyday life, to remember how to be mindful and live joyfully regardless of if it is pleasant or unpleasant, fortunate or unfortunate, beauti-ful people or ugly people around us. It is a real spiritual journey. How does your practice take form? There are thousands of roads to Rome. There is no one way is better than the other way. Just like in the Buddhist teaching: ‘Don’t mistake that the finger pointing to the moon is the moon. You must experience the moon yourself.” The outer forms of prayers, ritual, good vibrant healthy

food or supporting people around us are all skilful means to develop our own inner forms in devotion. Reverence for all beings, forgiveness to ourselves and other people and events, uncondi-tional love to ourselves and other people. To what end do you practice your beliefs? There is no end, and there is only a path of the pathless, shapeless, formless journey we call life. Consciously bringing joy to sadness, shine light to darkness and be truth to ourselves and our dreams. It is better to live one day at a time. When I live joyfully in the present, be in service to other people for the highest good, do what I love and love what I do, be inspiring wherever I go.Where will you go when you leave your body? Where do I go when I leave my body is not my concern. And I really don’t know. Please share with us a short quote, lyrics, prayer or short teaching that has inspired you lately. “Once you realise that the road is the goal and that you are always on the road, not to reach a goal, but to enjoy its beauty and its wisdom, life ceases to be a task and becomes natural and simple, in itself an ecstasy.” – Nisagadatta Maharaj.

I’ve never heard anyone say that they didn’t like music. When people see me carrying

around my cello, they usually say, “I love music!”Well, that’s great, thank you – me too! But are

you prepared to invest in music? The evidence for the value of music to the

brain is growing continually. When people think I am perhaps a little over the top with my enthusiasm for parents to expose their children to music lessons as early as possible, it’s easy to back myself up with science and research.

In a nutshell, all research points to this: Chil-dren learn everything better when they learn music. Even sport! Yes, being encouraged to connect to an external steady beat at a young age can lead to better co-ordinated bodies.

When taught with structure by trained teachers, music opens up the door to creative thinking and analysis that children apply to everything else in their lives and they take this into adulthood.

Any time we’re talking about education and children, it is important to talk about love. We have to put love into passing on music to our little ones and show them how much wonder there is in a piece of music, an instrument, a rhyme or a song.

Learning music is a gift for its own sake, and worth investing in even before we add the value of the researched goodness.

The other indicator is usually that of timeless-ness, albeit fleeting, a feeling of nowhere else existing descends and we immerse into what is current. Immediate. Pressing.

In this space, we exist. We do not worry. We do not fight. We just are.

In that instant we are no longer anywhere else mentally or physically, and often even emo-tionally except for where we are. We know what to do and how to do it (and sometimes that’s nothing at all.) We think collectively.

The birth of your child. Bearing witness to great loss. The hug of a dear one after a long time lost.

Could you, for a moment, imagine a ceaseless cavalcade of total and utter awareness. Do you think that might be what the notion of “enlight-enment” feels like?

Austrian poet, Rainer Maria Rilke is reputed to have said “Children, one earthly thing truly experienced, even once, is enough for a lifetime.”

It is not grabbing at any one thing. Not falling into the cool water below, not standing into the wind, not staying out so long so as you get sun-burnt on the boat’s deck. It is loving it all.

A sail boat. A summer afternoon. Above, the breeze flaps the sail over the sun warmed

wooden deck that lies beneath. Feet hanging over the edge gently skim the cool water.

Once you have had a morsel, a moment of delicious, tantalising sensory experience that captures you it becomes obsession to feel the immediacy and clarity of that moment (or an-other, just as highly charged) again and again.

To be present, truly present, is like a drug. Addictions could be described in this way

were it not that the difference lies in an addic-tion controlling your actions (often based on ideas about past experiences) where as being present liberates your each and every experi-ence anew.

Be it positive or negative to our own judge-ment, most experiences in which we have been fully present involve (at minimum) at least one or two of our physical senses.

Think of your most vivid memory and try to exclude the senses….a smell, a touch, a sound, a taste, a sight. Impossible, right?

Some would consider this Bacchanalian with my references to sensory immersion but these are merely markers towards, or features of, be-ing present. An appreciation of the senses with-out letting them control all actions we would all do well to be mindful of (note to self: cake).

BODY TYPES

I’ve been asked lately about the “perfect” body type for Yoga, which is a reasonable

inquiry. But when you consider that Yoga is a philosophy of the mind and not a form of exercise, body type is completely irrelevant.

The identification as Yoga as exercise is a misnomer, Yoga Sutra 1.2 enunciates “yoga citta vrtti nirodah”, which translates as “Yoga is the restriction of the fluctuations of the mind”. The ancient Sages were not contem-plating how to develop a particular body shape in their vast and encompassing dis-coveries. They certainly weren’t considering what type of body shape would look best on the cover of the latest Yoga journal, far from it. They were actually working with subtle energies and consciousness.

The question of body type relates to conscious movement practises known as Asana, which is one part of a very broad based philosophy. The wellness benefits of yoga movement are incredible but singularly are not Yoga.

To answer the question concerning a “per-fect” yoga body. A tall person in certain asana would have an advantage, so would a short person, a flexible person, a mobile person, a strong person, a person with great balance. The bottom line is your body type is irrelevant. Your height, flexibility, mobility, strength or balance will not restrict you or exclude you from asana practice. There is no perfect yoga body, everyone can benefit and improve with regular practice and competent coaching regardless of body type.

A qualified Yoga Teacher who has ana-tomical and biomechanical experience and a deep understanding of asana practices and sequencing will develop a practice and mod-ifications relevant for each person’s unique body type.

If you can breathe and feel you can practice Yoga asana.

INDIANSUMMERThere are only two things that I love about the winter months; Chai

lattes and hot water bottles! The recent opening of the Raw Deli in Woy Woy sparked the inspiration to create an icy cold chai smoothie recipe. The outcome was so delicious that I felt compelled to share with all my Gnostic friends!

The tradition of drinking chai remains a universally practised ritual. The herbs and spices that formulate the recipe offer an array of health promoting, stimulating, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory proper-ties. This is why I drink chai all year round!

This deliciously wholesome and sensationally spicy beverage con-coction can be drunk as a mid-morning energy boosting pick me up!

3rd PRINCIPLE: ENERGY FLOWS WHERE ATTENTION GOES

CROW

Every day we have tens of thousands of thoughts, they can’t be seen and in most

instances they can’t be heard by anyone else.Yet these thoughts are the most powerful

tool we possess. Nothing that we do can happen without first a thought.

We think of other people randomly through-out our day, and depending on what emotions we have attached to these people, we send them good or bad thoughts.

Thoughts are actually beams of energy that attract similar energy from the universal source. We initiate beams of energy of one kind or an-other to everyone and everything we think about.

This energy influences the potential of that person or situation.

We should all consider carefully the power of our thoughts and what we allow our attention to direct our thoughts to.

Ancient people who had a greater understand-ing of energy and thoughts would be very aware of creating positive fields of thought energy around their crops for a successful harvest. Often performing elaborate ceremonies to protect the crops from negative energies.

It’s interesting to look at the lack of ceremony in our modern society and realise the negative energy beams we set up when we watch or read the news which is focused on the lower side of human activity. Everything we witness we think about and then we are magnifying the potential of that energy.

We each have the power to change our thought patterns and watch the amazing changes in our lives.

Our thoughts determine who and what we are. Taste your words before you think or speak.

Medicine Crow is a Shaman who demonstrates how to live with a spiritual perspective connecting with nature and the creator.

TRAVEL: VIETNAM

Depending on your age, Vietnam conjures varying emotions and associations. Before

travelling there my impressions consisted of TV personalities, that Robin William’s movie and the delicious fresh flavours of the beautiful food.

We arrived in Nha Trang, the capitol of the Khanh Hoa Province on the south-eastern side of the country, ready for a reunion with our old friend Luke who now calls this part of the country home. Nha Trang is home to about 390,000 people and is wrapped around a beautiful bay that sees warm weather and delicious monsoonal thunderstorms.

Sign boards in town boast of paragliding and scuba diving and its become quite the tourist hub with a new influx of Russian tourists adding to the Vietnamese holidaymakers and backpackers. Clubs and drinking occupy the younger and wilder travellers but instead we dove into exploring by motorbike. Taking advantage of Luke’s grow-ing local knowledge and grasp of the language we ventured up and down the coast, visiting a buddhist temple on an island, getting lost in rural back streets teeming with school kids, chicken and cows, exploring waterfalls, having mud baths and eating… oh how we ate!

One of the highlights of our exploring was a visit or two to “The Shack” located in the long rickety rows of old school beach shelters on Bai Dai (Long Beach), Cam Ranh. This sweet haven for surfers, backpackers and adventurers is a cafe come surf gear hire spot come bar, and for the less adventur-ous, relaxing deck chairs.

“The Shack” on Bai Dai (Long Beach), Cam Ranh.

We savoured more than a few hours here, the atmosphere lighthearted, with good music over the sound system and laid back friendly service.

We chatted briefly to the lovely Celine who runs the business with a local vietnamese family. A warm feeling of relaxed belonging permeates the place and travellers talked over tables about their homes, travels and families.

Upon leaving, we saw the huge beachside resort developments rising from the dunes a few k’s away. Development follows tourism and we lamented, hoping that the special oasis of The Shack might be left untarnished by the encroaching money men.

Like any adventure, we saw what was exciting and new but it was not until the last few days in Saigon (Ho Chi Minh) when we visited the War Remnants Museum my eyes were opened to some of the depth, destruction and war history of this beautiful place.

Vietnam survived 20 years of war and a struggle for independence between 1955 and 1975.

Having been born nearly a decade after it ended I pretend not to understand the intricacies of the subtle (and not so subtle) political and economic influences that surrounded its activities.

What I can, in some small way, acknowledge through photographs displayed in the museum, is the human destruction it entailed. As is the want of war, the carnage appeared on both sides. The heartless acts, on both sides. The orphaned children, on both sides.

Regardless of what you think about displays

DVD: Choice PointRRP $29.95 • Available @ Gnostic Forest

A thoroughly inspiring DVD which runs for 74 minutes and a 68 colour booklet highlights

Choice Point is a film for this very point in time – this very juncture in human evolution, or this very instant in the shifting of consciousness. It is both an introduction to a movement of creative collaboration, and a template for transformation. The movie introduces the three pillars at the foundation of its dynamic social movement: Understand your world, Align Your Purpose, Be the Change. – MH

within the museum (as a Communist state approved site) it’s impossible not to acknowledge the deep scar left by the use of chemicals during the war. Some 75,000,000 litres of Agent Orange, a defoliant chemical, was used to clear the jungles and thus expose the rebel fighters. The ill effects on humans and environment continues to be evident. Multiple health problems such as physical deformations, psychological impairment, and rife amounts of cancer are experienced by 3 million people here. These effects persist in the children of the children of those alive during the war.

Downstairs from the graphic war depictions is a room filled with photos of love. Photographs of the adults and children who, affected by these chemicals live together and support one another at An Phuc House.

Joy and determination have a way of oozing out of a person and Lê Và Queo entranced me, ironically at the exit of the war memorial.

He sat quietly, smilingly, threading small plastic beads in loops. My initial shyness and want not to intrude on his industriousness gave way to his

charm as we chatted about what he was making and how his day was. Since returning home I discovered we are the same age and he is one of the first members of An Phuc House, the sale of whose handicrafts, goes to-ward care and living expenses for the group home they are a part of.

The first part of my trip had connected me with the amazing scenery of the country but it was here, sitting with him and his friends that I felt I truly connected to the history and heart of the people of Vietnam.

Emily brought back handicrafts from An Phuc and will be sending money to the group through their sales.

Planetary Influencesfor DECEMBER 2014, JANUARY & FEBRUARY 2015

DECEMBERYou may be feeling rather challenged this month because the keywords for December are: feeling unsettled, confused, opinions are vague and difficult, what is reality and fiction, misunderstandings during conversations, be wary of situations thatseem too good to be true, sudden changes/upheavals the list goes on. Although, whatyou can do is to think positively, face your responsibilities with your family, loved onesand career by laying down new foundations that will bring to you the security andrecognition for all efforts and hard work.

JANUARY

Moving into January it is so important you still remain in a positive frame of mind. There will be a lot of powerful changes, internal conflict, shifts and reversals in society which may bring some compulsive reactions through difficult situations and intense experiences with unworthy people. Being overwhelmed at times may leave you feeling tired and lethargic, so working with your wisdom and insight may help you to find a positive way of coping through these difficult times.

FEBRUARY

Contemplating your life in a reflective way will have you questioning every aspect of your life especially goals and ambitions. Confusion and depression may play a big part so looking after your health physically, mentally and emotionally is of greatimportance to allow you to seriously concentrate and carefully plan with a lot of patience a new positive pathway for your future. There will be some opportunity to enjoy love and regain your finances although be careful you don’t let this opportunity slip through your fingers.

deCeMBeR

Where there was failure before it is now time to be practical and positive to see how you can achieve success in many areas in your life, especially business. Investing in your future? Now is an excellent time as you have a greater understanding of the rules involved where you are able to give and take whilst fi nding the right balance. An older person may also be infl uential, giving you the confi dence to make new plans and to attract the right resources. A month of discoveries and for some, a promotion.

January

Intense encounters from powerful people who prey on your vulnerability may occur this month. Be aware not to be coerced into underhanded dealings or subversive tactics. Stand your ground as you can bring insight and balance the power to make you strong. You must be honest with yourself as you transform weakness within, healing past grudges and grievances. Working through this you will feel confi dent as you immerse yourself in loved ones, friends, social activities and community care.

February

Sees a drive for success and power as your mind and concentration intensify. Obsessive behaviour, pessimistic thinking, and worrying about the small stuff may make you want to cut corners. Not a good idea! Proceed with caution! Listen to other peoples ideas as they can be helpful to bring to you into a new cycle of thinking. Your mental energy is strong. Expect sudden and exciting changes as you are eager for more interesting subjects to enter your life. Health issues, nutrition and fi tness are high on the agenda.
