radiopharmaceuticals, a rotating camera (single or multiple-head) and a computer to produce
images representing slices through the body in different planes. The SPECT systems can be a
conventional SPECT or a hybrid SPECT coupled with the capabilities of a computed tomography.
SPECT permits accurate localization in 3D space and can be helpful for tumor imaging, infection
(leukocyte) imaging, thyroid imaging or bone imaging conventional SPECT and hybrid SPECT
coupled with the capabilities of a Computed Tomography (CT) have been tracked .
SPECT Systems
Single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) is used to construct images of the
distribution of the radioactive tracers in the human body by measuring the emission of single
photons of a given energy from radioactive tracers. The device includes a detector, gantry system,
patient’s table and collimators. One unit is defined as one system.
SPECT/CT Systems
A SPECT/CT system is a technically advanced tomography system which combines the SPECT
information with the anatomical data of a Computed Tomography (CT) scan to provide more
information about the body. SPECT/CT is primarily used for cardiology applications, such as
calcium scoring and computed tomography angiography (CTA). SPECT/CT is being utilized in the
three emerging areas of orthopedics and sports-related medicine, oncology and infection imaging.
The device includes a detector, gantry system, patient’s table, collimators, image acquisition,
process workstation and software. One unit is defined as one system.

15.2.1.9 Ultrasound Systems
Ultrasound imaging systems are used to produce two dimensional images of the structures using
high-frequency sound waves. B/W ultrasound systems and Color Doppler ultrasound systems
have been tracked under this taxonomy. Tracked hereunder are the equipment only and not
accessories and/or additional costs associated with ultrasound system installation.
B/W Ultrasound Systems
Black and White (B/W) ultrasound system is used in the visualization of internal organs and
obtains images in shades of grey. Primary application for B/W ultrasound system lies in
gynaecology, liver disorders, cardiology etc. Hereunder, portable and stand-alone B/W ultrasound
systems have been tracked.
Portable Systems (B/W)
The portable B/W ultrasound systems are lightweight and smaller in size and come with limited
software applications. One unit is defined as one system.
Stand Alone Systems (B/W)
The stand alone B/W ultrasound systems are the high end versions of the B/W ultrasound systems
and come with an advanced software application and imaging capabilities. One unit is defined as
one system.
Color Doppler Ultrasound Systems
Color doppler uses standard ultrasound methods to produce a picture of a blood vessel. In
addition, a computer converts the doppler sounds into colors that are overlaid on the image of the
blood vessel and that represent the speed and direction of blood flow through the vessel. Color
doppler ultrasound employs the 'Doppler effect' principle to visualize moving objects and blood
flow and has primary application in cardiology and gynaecology. Hereunder, portable and stand-
alone color doppler ultrasound systems have been tracked.
Portable Systems
The portable color doppler ultrasound systems are light weight and smaller in size and come with
limited software application and imaging capabilities. One unit is defined as one system.
Stand Alone Systems
The stand alone color doppler ultrasound systems are the high end versions of the color doppler
ultrasound systems and come with advanced software application and imaging capabilities. One
unit is defined as one system.
15.2.1.10 X-ray Systems
X-ray systems use high-energy radiations to diagnose diseases by taking images of internal
structure of body. Analog X-ray systems, Digital X-ray systems and Retrofit X-ray systems are
included under this category. Tracked hereunder are the equipment only and not accessories
and/or additional costs associated with X-ray system installation.

Analog X-ray Systems
The analog X-ray systems are devices that are used to obtain diagnostic images of the internal
structures of the body in the form of thin films. Revenues generated through sales of stand alone
X-ray films have not been tracked. One unit is defined as one system.
Digital X-ray Systems
Digital X-ray systems incorporate digital radiography and obtain images on a screen rather than a
film. These include Computed Radiography & Digital Radiography systems. The dental X-ray
systems have been tracked under dental devices market separately and are not considered here.
Computed Radiography (CR) Systems
Computed radiography involves an indirect diagtnostic imaging system. The receptor used within a
CR cassette absorbs the radiation exiting the patient. The absorbed energy is then extracted by
processing the exposed plate in a CR reader..Before viewing the images, the stored information in
the CR imaging plate is processed. A digital image is generated by converting the analog signal
from the resultant latent image data to a digital signal. A CR system includes X-ray tube, CR
reader, CR cassette and operating console. One unit is defined as one system.
Digital Radiography (DR) Systems
Direct or digital radiography (DR) is a form of X-ray imaging involving the use of digital X-ray
sensors instead of traditional photographic film. The image brightness and contrast can be
modified by digital processing of the acquired image data. Digital imaging systems can generate
sufficient image contrast over a relatively broader range of exposure levels as compared to film-
screen imaging systems. A digital radiography system includes X-ray tube, upright stand/ patient
table, detector plate and operating console. One unit is defined as one system.
Retrofit X-ray Systems
Retrofit X-ray systems are digital panel detectors that enable upgradation of analog X-Ray
systems to Digital. One unit consists of one retrofit X-Ray system.
Note: 1). Value, distribution and company shares figures reflect annual gross sales of diagnostic
imaging in local currency converted to $ at constant rates. Volume figures reflect the annual unit
sales of diagnostic imaging. The annual growth (year on year growth) and compounded annual
growth rate (CAGR) in tables is rounded off to one decimal place.
2). Company share data represents market share (in revenues and as percentage to total market)
of companies in market categories and geographies tracked in the database. The data has been
rounded off to the nearest decimal places.
