2015 IIDA ANNUAL REPORT

MAKING A LASTING IMPACT ON DESIGNAs IIDA continues to strengthen its commitment to elevating the profession, we are creating programs, launching initiatives, and tackling the topics that will define our industry in the years to come. Here is a sample of the kinds of tools, resources, events, and initiatives you can expect from IIDA in 2016 and beyond:

IIDA DIVERSITY COUNCILIn February 2016, IIDA released its Industry Roundtable report tackling the topic of diversity and inclusion in the design industry. The report, “Diversity and Design: Why Gender, Equity, and Multidisciplinary Thinking Are Essential to Business,” made it clear—the design industry is not as diverse as we think it is—and the report is already creating a dialogue within the industry. IIDA is taking the lead on this important issue. The newly-formed IIDA Diversity Council will tackle goals ranging from funding diversity research, promoting diversity resources, and creating a curriculum that encourages students of diverse backgrounds to pursue careers in design.

2ND ANNUAL IIDA ADVOCACY SYMPOSIUMIIDA is proud to host the 2nd annual Advocacy Symposium, September 23-25, 2016, in Denver, Colorado. Attendees at this year’s Symposium will develop an understanding of what advocacy means, how to apply practical skills and proven techniques to articulate the value and mission of interior design, and how to energize advocates for our profession.

DESIGN LEVERAGED, PART IIThe second in our Design Leveraged series, IIDA and the Business and Institutional Furniture Manufacturers Association (BIFMA) commissioned a study from Brandware Research to examine the role of design in the workplace. The report includes case studies that illustrate how smart enterprises are rethinking their workplaces. Available in summer 2016, Design Leveraged makes an undeniable business case—with quantitative research and hard data—for good design, providing commercial interior designers with a critical tool to help them better communicate with C-level executives about the value of an office redesign.

Design looks forward without neglecting history or disregarding the lessons we have learned along the way. IIDA embraces this ethos—gaining wisdom from our past as we charge toward the future of design and the Association.

We recognize that this only the beginning. The Interior Design profession is becoming more complex and multidisciplinary, and it is our job to welcome this change and growth as we support our 15,000+ IIDA Members with cutting-edge

and worthwhile resources, programming, thought leadership, events, publications, and more.

We understand that IIDA Members represent the next generation of designers who are eager to collaborate in order to create a built environment with an eye toward form, safety, and function. They are emerging and established experts in the field, constantly responding to and making strategic design decisions based on new trends and information about how people occupy, inhabit, and experience interior spaces. Our designers’ skills and expertise have touched every industry imaginable—hospitality, retail, healthcare, technology, education, government, corporate, and more—contributing to the overall health, wellness, creativity, innovation, productivity, and happiness of employees and others who occupy these spaces.

It is important for us to ask:

How does IIDA best serve our Members in this ever-changing industry?

Design requires a willingness to change, to be open to new ideas, to take risks, and to push limits, boundaries, and (yes) the envelope.

Scott Hierlinger, FIIDA, LEED AP President, International Board of Directors 2015

Cheryl S. Durst, Hon. FIIDA, LEED AP

Executive Vice President and CEO

Our initiatives are elevating the conversations, the opportunities, and the industry. We’re tackling issues like diversity in design, advocating for legislation that will expand opportunities for interior designers, supporting research that links design to health and happiness, and continuing to find new ways to educate the public about the impact of interior design—to name a few of our initiatives.

IIDA Members know and respect the profession—we deeply understand the intrinsic value of what we do, but we need a common language, shared vision and values, and opportunities to advance the profession. This Annual Report serves as a retrospective, but it also illustrates how IIDA

continues to be nimble, fiscally healthy, and, with your enthusiasm and dedication, committed to creating a community, defining common goals, educating both our practitioners and society-at-large, and elevating interior design, an increasingly complex industry that has the potential to positively impact the health and wellbeing of all people, everywhere.

WELCOME

FINANCE

2015 FINANCIAL HIGHLIGHTS

The financial health of IIDA ultimately determines the Association’s ability to serve our Members. In order to provide the highest quality programming in the Interior Design industry, being fiscally responsible with our Members’ dues and other sources of revenue is critical.

For the year ending December 31, 2015, the consolidated financial results of the combined Association and Foundation remain consistently strong. Total assets and net assets have increased over the past three years, with liabilities remaining primarily flat over the same period. The liquidity (or cash and investment reserves) also has improved each year. Total revenue over the three-year period (2013, 2014, and 2015) has declined due to the market performance of the investments. Operational income, such as member dues and program fees, has increased over the three-year period. Total expenses also have increased

The bottom line: IIDA has maintained a strong financial position as we have continued to grow as the premier Commercial Interior Design Association.

due to increased program services to members and one-time system implementations. Overall, the change in net assets over the three-year period continues to generate revenue in excess of expenses, which has continued to increase the overall net assets of the combined organizations.

WHERE WE ARE

INSPIRING AND INFORMING INDUSTRY CONVERSATIONSIIDA publications cover both technical and theoretical topics in design, as well as industry news and events. The award-winning IIDA design journal Perspective is published twice a year and offers compelling commentary and articles about the topics that matter most to designers today.

IIDA also published What Clients Want, Vol. 2, in 2015. The second volume of this three-part book series focuses on 16 hotel design projects chosen from around the world, with each project featuring commentary from both the client and the designer revealing how projects were conceived, and how they have defined culture, conveyed value, and shifted business models.

Also in 2015, 30 interior design and manufacturing leaders addressed employee well-being as a necessary component in design strategy, and provided new perspectives on human-focused design at the Association’s 18th Industry Roundtable. The resulting executive report outlines workplace well-being strategies that interior designers can implement in their commercial projects.

BUILDING AN INTERNATIONAL PRESENCE

THE CULTURE OF WORK – A GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE

With a commitment to raising the profile of interior design and the Association, IIDA expanded its global presence in 2015. IIDA presented the program, “The Culture of Work – A Global Perspective,” in May 2015 at the Expoconstrucción Expodiseño trade show as well as to interior design and architecture students at Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá, Colombia, which represented early steps in the Association’s expansion into South America.

“DESIGN IS…” AT DOWNTOWN DESIGN

IIDA collaborated with the Society of British and International Design (SBID) in October 2015 to present a joint program at Downtown Design in Dubai. The program, “Design Is…” featured international, award-winning projects from 12 countries and offered insight into the worldwide design trends that are shaping our industry’s future.

MILAN ROUNDTABLE

In November 2015, IIDA participated in the Milan Roundtable, which addressed global design practices and the dynamics of cultural variances in the workplace. These forums offer IIDA the opportunity to advance the value of design by bringing together clients, end-users, and design practitioners—leaders in the international design industry—to create diverse communities of intellect.

HONORING DESIGN LEADERS AND LEGENDS

In 2015, IIDA celebrated a two-decade partnership with Herman Miller as the host of the IIDA Leaders Breakfast, an annual event series that celebrates design innovation and cultivates connections between industry leaders and the local design community. The Leaders Breakfast included eight host cities in the U.S. and Canada, welcoming up to 700 attendees at each location. Each Breakfast honors a local interior design leader and features a renowned keynote speaker who shares their insights on the creative process. Past speakers have included: Paola Antonelli, Senior Curator of Architecture and Design at MoMA; actor/ director Sydney Pollack; and Kent Larson, MIT Media Laboratory and MIT Living Labs.

IIDA works for its members as an advocate for design excellence, legislation, leadership, accreditation, education, and community outreach to increase the recognition of interior design as a profession that enhances business value and positively impacts the health and well-being of people’s lives every day. Below we’ve included a few of our achievements and activities from 2015. It’s not an exhaustive list, but it does provide a sampling of the priorities and programming the Association will continue to pursue in 2016 and beyond. You can learn more about everything we do at www.iida.org.

EXPANDING STUDENT OPPORTUNITIES

IIDA recognizes the importance of supporting emerging design professionals. With yearly programs for Student Members, such as the Student Mentoring Program, Student Design Charette, and the Student Design Competition, these designers are able to supplement their coursework with opportunities to be recognized by the industry, hone their design skills, and connect with industry professionals. The IIDA Student Mentoring Program is one of the most dynamic student/mentor programs in the Interior Design industry. In 2015, IIDA paired more than 800 students and mentors, allowing students to get out of the classroom and into the real world of interior design for a day of job shadowing.

ADVOCATING FOR THE PROFESSION

IIDA advocates for its members and the profession so interior designers can practice to their fullest abilities. IIDA tracks legislation that impacts the profession, creates advocacy resources, advises Chapters on advocacy matters, and maintains constant contact with interior design advocates. In 2015, IIDA held its inaugural Advocacy Symposium, with nearly 100 designers, architects, students, and other industry professionals convening in Austin, Texas, for an inspiring event filled with educational sessions, keynote speakers, and expert panels on the topic of advocacy best practices. The 2016 Advocacy Symposium will take place in Denver, Colorado, September 23-25.
