Welcome to Our 2013 Brochure!

About UsGlobal Languages and Tours (GLT) was previously known asApprendre et Vivre; we changed our name in 2010 to moreaccurately reflect the wide variety of destinations to which we offerprogrammes. We started out back in 1976, and have now firmlyestablished ourselves as the leading provider of high qualityHomestay Programmes and School Tours for Irish students.

Over the years, we have developed highly valued relationships withour foreign agents, schools, language centres, local organisers andfamilies and can therefore offer unrivalled service in terms of howyou are looked after during your time way from home.

“We know we are living in challenging economic times at present,

therefore at GLT, we have done all we can to make sure that our

educational, action packed programmes are provided at the lowest

possible costs. In fact, if you can find the same programme cheaper

anywhere else, we promise to better their price!”

WHO are our programmes for? This brochure contains information on our Group Tours and on our Individual Programmes.

WHAT programmes are on offer?Group and School Tours• These tours are for all kinds of groups, for example Schools, Sports Clubs, Youth Clubs. They tend to be less than

a week in length and involve sightseeing and excursions in some of the world’s finest cities.

School Integrations• Irish students integrate into secondary level education in their chosen country. We offer this programme

throughout the academic year from September through to June, and for varying durations between 3 weeks to

the full year. This programme is open to students who have studied their chosen language for at least 2 years.

Summer Programmes (can include Leaving Cert Intensive Courses and a variety of Sports Camps)• Offers students a unique and fun filled opportunity to experience the best of another culture. A variety of courses

with or without language classes and a full programme of activities, excursions and sports are on offer. These

programmes are hugely popular and participants benefit from improved language skills and personal

development.

Home Stays• These classic immersion programmes allow for students to improve their knowledge and fluency of their chosen

language by integrating and participating in the everyday life of a foreign family, as well as discovering the

region, the culture and much more.

Exchanges• Similar to homestays but as well as students staying with a family in another country, the child from the host

family pays a return visit to Ireland and stays with your own family. Irish students enjoy the integration and

exposure to their chosen language and culture, and also then offer the same experience to the foreign student.

WHERE do we offer programmes? We currently offer Tours and Programmes in a wide variety of cities in countries across Europe. If you are

interested in visiting a city which you do not see advertised in our brochure, please contact us, as we have Local

Organisers offering programmes in many countries and can create tailor made tours upon request, at no extra

cost.

WHEN do our programmes take place?Tours and Programmes are available all year round. During the summer months of June, July and August, we run

various additional programmes.

WHY take part in a programme? Many individuals, students, parents and teachers are now aware of the benefits of learning a foreign language and

experiencing a different culture.

In today’s difficult economic climate, competition for employment is fierce. Employers are faced with many

candidates with similar qualifications, and so look for something that makes an individual stand out. Having

spent time abroad can put you at an advantage as it illustrates a depth of character and personal life experience.

Further, as European and global barriers fall, employers are increasingly looking to those with the experience and

knowledge of different languages.

In addition to the benefits for future employment, our programmes allow students to broaden their horizons

and open their minds to new culture, habits, foods and lifestyles, which go a long way to personal development

and creates friends and memories which can last a lifetime.

Accommodation

Our programmes differ from those of many other providers in that we offer Host Family accommodation. Thismeans that we can place our students with host families, as an alternative to residential or schoolaccommodations. Students therefore ‘live the language’ and enjoy the comfort, friendship and unique experienceof family life. We do continue to offer a choice of host family or hotel accommodation for our School Tours.

School Tour StudentsGroups for Tours can choose between host family accommodation or hotels /youth accommodation centres. In hotels and youth accommodation centres, rooms are usually 2 or 3 beds per room, but can vary dependingupon requirements.

In host families, students are usually accommodated in pairs, although we may be able to accommodate somestudents singly if preferred (this would be subject to a supplement charge and availability). You will beaccommodated in the same area as your group and will receive full board accommodation, continental breakfast, packed lunch (excursion days only), and evening meal.

Individual Programme StudentsStudents on Individual Programmes are accommodated with hostfamilies on an individual basis and are guaranteed to be the onlyEnglish speaking student in the house

Living with a host family is by far the best way to experience anotherculture and advance your language ability. You will be immersed inthe language and the way of life – it’s the perfect way to build on theknowledge and skills you already have. It is an opportunity toexperience, observe and learn a new life-style and culture whilepracticing the language skills in a home.

Accommodation on the continent can be quite different to what youare used to, but is a fantastic opportunity to experience how Europeanfamilies live. Our families come from all walks of life. Depending onwhich programme you are participating in, they may or may not havechildren, and children can vary in age. But each and every family iscarefully selected and approved by our local organisers and are happyto welcome you into their home to share the daily life of their family.

Although host families are not expected to organise any excursions, they may well take you out and about tolocal places of interest etc. You should realise that different countries have different customs and family life variesfrom the Irish way, please embrace these differences and be prepared to adapt and enjoy.

Reputation – Our host families, teachers and local organisers are proud to be associated with us. Our students, and their friends, return on tours and programmes year after year. This is the best recommendation of all.

What’s Involved in this Programme? Our Secondary School Integration Programme is a

fantastic opportunity for individuals who wish to take

their learning further than the two or three week

language course.

Students attend a secondary school alongside local

students and follow subjects as part of the school

curriculum.

Accommodation is in host families located close to the

high school and participants can avail of extra

language classes if required. Boarding school options

are also available.

We also combine school integration stays with soccer,

rugby and other camps where participants can enjoy

their preferred sport while attending a local school.

Before starting in the school, your son, daughter or

student will attend 10 hours one-to-one tuition for

one week. The lessons are taken in the home of the

host family home or teacher. This will then rapidly

improve their language skills and facilitate their

integration into the local way of life and school

system.

Accommodation will be in a local host family, half

board on week days (lunch at school) and full board at

week-ends. We try, as far as possible, to place the

students in families with children approximately their

own age, but this cannot always be guaranteed for

every placement. Boarding school options are also

available.

Age: 14 to 18 years. Age dictates what type of school

is selected for each individual student.

Similar to homestays but as well as students staying

with a family in another country, the child from the

host family pays a return visit to Ireland and stays with

your own family. Irish students enjoys the same

integration and exposure to their chosen language and

culture as with the homestay programme, and also

then offers the same experience to the foreign student

in Ireland.

Stays take place during the summer holidays or during

transition year if appropriate, and generally last for

two or three weeks, but can be longer if requested.

In order to make a successful match, we ask for

detailed information about your personality, hobbies

and interests, as well as your language ability and

motivations for participating. We ask for exactly the

same information from prospective exchange partners

in the destination countries, and then make the match

accordingly.

This programme provides students with an excellent

opportunity to experience a homestay with a foreign

family. Your motivation for the exchange rather than a

homestay may be financial, as it is more cost effective

that a straight homestay, or it may be that you want

your own family to experience hosting a student,

which is a very enriching and culturally enhancing

experience… but whatever your motivations, we

would be delighted to make this happen for you.
