GLS stands for German Language School, a company owned by barbara Jaeschke who founded it in 1983. GLS welcomes ca. 5.200 students annually from up to 60 nations. Like Goethe institut, GLS is an official testing center for Zd Zertifikat deutsch. Companies like daimler, ebay, motorola and Sony train their staff at GLS. the GLS campus is located in berlin prenzlauer berg, a very trendy district within walking distance to brandenburger tor, museum island and alexanderplatz. Facilities: 40 classrooms | 50 studio apartments | book shop | cafeteria & restaurant | wiFi.

all 5 houses on site reflect German history: the oldest building dates back as far as 1867, to prussian emperor wilhem i. the youngest one was built only 1960, on debris left by world war ii bombings. all buil-dings were originally used as public schools. in 2005 the berlin Senate sold the campus to GLS, who modernized it, conserving as much of the building fabric as possible.

Left, the school as it looked like in the 60ies, shortly after the berlin wall was built. at that time it still was a state owned school, located in the communist part of berlin. the district was and still is called prenzlauer berg: originally a poor peop-les‘ neighbourhood, it became a haven for artists and dissi-dents after world war ii. then, after reunification, prenzlauer berg boomed, quickly turning into the „in“ district of berlin.

… is the GLS address. kastanienallee is one of the best known streets in berlin. nicknamed “Casting alley”, kastanienallee is not only a popular location for film and fashion shootings:

it is home to more than 40 bars, cafes and fashion shops featuring berlin designers.

please come early at 8, so you can take the placement test. GLS is easy to find: trams 1 and 12 stop in front of the GLS campus, and 3 metro stations are just a 5 minute walk away.

Classes start. on other days we start at 9, but today at 10 – later because of placement tes-tings. all teachers hold university degrees and teach in tandems: one teacher takes care of the first 2 lessons, and another teacher takes over after the break.

Classes are small, with an average of 8 and a maximum of 12 students.

Pause: your first break will last 30 minutes. time enough to have a snack and socialize a bit. the garden in front of the cafeteria is the core of the campus – and as such a green oasis in the very center of bustling berlin.

Still break time: in colder seasons you have lots of indoor options – you can hang out in the lounge, visit the book shop or check your mails. wiFi is available everywhere on campus.

Lunchtime: the GLS cafeteria is open till 4.00 pm. you can sit indoor as well as in the garden outside. among other dishes we also serve German food. if you prefer a more ele-gant environment, just go upstairs: the GLS restaurant is open as well (till midnight).

CONFIRMATION PROCEDURES

• All bookings will be confirmed within 48 hours.

• Accommodation will be confirmed with courses. if the accommodation requested is not available, a second choice will be offered or an alternate will be arranged. GLS reserves the right to book alternative accommoda-tion in a partner hotel of same or superior standard. accommodation address will be sent out after full pay-ment has been received.

• Students who need to receive original confirmations or visa support letters fast can request that documents be sent by express courier for an additional fee.

• Changes made prior to the student’s arrival will be accepted, subject to availability, at an additional charge of eur 50.

INSURANCE

• Please note, that you are obliged to prove health and personal insurance coverage on arrival. GLS offers a com-bined travel insurance policy including comprehensive health, accident, personal liability and baggage insur-ance for damage incurred abroad. all necessary forms and documents are provided by GLS upon arrival.

PAyMENTS

• if a visa is needed: the „letter of invitation“ will be sent only after having received full payment for the program. in case of visa denial, GLS will return the payment except a handling fee of eur 200.

• Upon final program confirmation, GLS will send an invoice by fax, email or mail. the course and accommo-dation fees must be paid in full 2 weeks before arrival.

• Payment must be made without charges to beneficiary

(any bank fees will be charged to the student upon arriv-al) and may be sent by one of the following means:

CANCELLATION & REFUND POLICy

• If you have to cancel your course, please inform GLS Sprachenzentrum immediately in writing. if cancellation is received at least 2 weeks before arrival, the program fees less deposit are fully refundable. GLS will retain the deposit of eur 200 to cover the administrative costs.

• If cancellation is received prior to arrival, but later than 2 weeks in advance, GLS will retain 30% of the total amount due.

• No refunds will be made after classes have begun with

respect to tuition fees and internship placement fee.

• If students want to change accommodation arrange-ments after arrival, they must give GLS 2 weeks notice. all funds paid for accommodation after these 2 weeks will be refunded, less a handling fee of eur 50. there are no refunds or accommodation changes on stays for 4 weeks or less.

• GLS will make all refunds within 30 days onLy to the person or agency that made payment to school.

GENERAL CONDITIONS

• No tuition takes place on German public holidays. morning group classes are not replaced, afternoon group classes and individual tuition will be moved to other days.

• If a standard group has less than 3 participants or a mini-group only one participant, GLS reserves the right to reduce tuition from 90 to 60 minutes per double lesson. during summer we reserve the right to schedule individual tuition in the afternoons.

• GLS is not responsible for accidents and illness of a student during the courses. in any case the liability of GLS is lim-ited to the triple amount of the course fee for all damages. Students are responsible for any and all damages they cause and must directly compensate the owner of the property involved. Students must show proof of sufficient coverage re medical and personal liablility insurance.

• GLS reserves the right to cancel an excursion if less than 3 students registered 5 days before the excursion.

• All complaints must be made to GLS Sprachen zentrum directly during the course in berlin.

• this agreement shall be governed by the laws of Germany, and venue for any possible legal proceeding arising due to the administration of this agreement shall be in berlin, Germany.

Spitzingsee is fantastic if you like adventures. we start right after your german class: hiking, mountain climbing, or paddling along canyons. The camp (a former hotel) is right next to a lake, and looking out of the window you‘ll either see the lake or the mountains. glS has been placing foreign students at german high schools for more than 15 years and is a member of DFH (german Association for international High School Programs).

we place in 3 different types of schools: state, private and international. FaCtsgermAn SKillS: at least on an intermediate level (documented by 3 years of German at school or certificate zd)

AgeS: 15 – 18 state schools, 11 – 18 private schools

The visa procedure can take up to 4 weeks (even longer, if you book a high school program ), so please apply as early as possible, and let us know if you

confirmaTion procedures

• All bookings will be confirmed within 48 hours via email.

• Students who need to receive original confirmations or visa support letters fast can request that documents be sent by express courier for an additional fee.

• Changes made prior to the student’s arrival will be accepted, subject to availability, at an additional charge of eur 50.

insurance

• Please note, that you are obliged to prove health and personal insurance coverage on arrival. Gls offers a com-bined travel insurance policy including comprehensive health, accident, perso-nal liability and baggage insurance for damage incurred abroad. all necessary forms and documents are provided by Gls upon arrival.

paymenTs

• If a visa is needed: The „letter of invi-tation“ will be sent only after having received full payment for the program. in case of visa denial, Gls will return the payment except a handling fee of eur 200.

• Upon final program confirmation, GLS will send an invoice by email. The course and accommodation fees must be paid in full 2 weeks before arrival.

• payment must be made without charges to beneficiary (any bank fees will be charged to the student upon arrival) and may be sent by:

cancellaTion & refund policy

• If you have to cancel your course, please inform Gls sprachenzentrum immediately in writing. if cancellation is received at least 2 weeks before arrival, payments made will be retourned except for a handling fee of eur 200.

• If cancellation is received prior to arrival, but later than 2 weeks in advance, Gls will retain 30% of the total amount due.

• No refunds will be made after programs have begun with respect to tuition fees and high school placement fee.

• GLS will make all refunds within 30 days only to the person or agency that made payment to school.

General condiTions

• To secure transfer for arriving juniors, all necessary information - exact date of arrival, airline, flight no., name of airport or station - must be sent to Gls no later than 1 week before arrival. arrivals must be scheduled between 9 am and 9 pm. Transfers beyond this timeframe are done at a surcharge.

• No tuition takes place on German public holidays.

• GLS is not responsible for accidents and illness of a student during the courses. in any case the liability of Gls is limited to the triple amount of the course fee for all damages. students are responsible for any and all damages they cause and must directly compensate the owner of the property involved. students must show proof of sufficient coverage re medical and personal liability insurance.

• All complaints must be made to GLS sprachenzentrum berlin directly during the course.

• This agreement shall be governed by the laws of Germany, and venue for any possible legal proceeding arising due to the administration of this agreement shall be in berlin, Germany.
