MUSIC PATRONS: SUPPORTING THE HEART OF GLOUCESTER C ATHEDRAL It would be unthinkable to imagine Evensong without choristers or the sound of the famous organ ringing

around the nave. We invite you to be a Music Patron to enable:

Our young musicians to

benefit from a musical

education of the highest

standard. Many go on

to study music at the

UK’s top universities and

conservatoires, forging

futures for themselves as

professional musicians.

Our Choirs to uphold the

English choral tradition by

performing world-class

music. Thanks to our Patrons,

our Cathedral Choir, Youth

Choir, Middle Choir and

Junior Choir will keep this

tradition alive for future

generations.

School children throughout

Gloucestershire to discover

the joy of singing through

workshops and performance.

Those who are inspired,

will have the opportunity

to become part of the

Cathedral’s musical life by

joining one of our choirs.

PRES IDENTS : DAME SARAH CONNOLLY AND EDWARD GARDNER OBE

MUSIC SCORE OVERLEAF : THE OPENING OF THE MAGNIF IC AT FROM HERBERT HOWELLS ’ GLOUCESTER SERV ICE (1947)

A way to support the musical life of the Cathedral which is, in my view, an essential component of its mission and

ministry. I wanted to help ensure it could continue to thrive and develop.

MUSIC PATRON

The excellence of our professional choirs and the accessibility of our other choirs is wonderful, but maintaining them is only possible with regular financial support. We simply could not offer all that we do without the generous donations of a growing number of people who value the singing and music making that help to bring this ancient and spiritual place to life. We would be delighted if you were to become one of them.

ADRIAN PARTINGTON DIRECTOR OF MUSIC

The years I was a chorister at Gloucester Cathedral were some of the best of my life. The skills I learned singing in the Cathedral Choir have served me so well in my career, and I would like as many boys and girls as possible to have the benefits I enjoyed. I would urge anyone with an interest in the future of music in this country to lend their support to this valuable scheme – even a small amount can make a huge difference.

EDWARD GARDNER OBE PRESIDENT OF GLOUCESTER CATHEDRAL CHOIR

I am thrilled to be the first President of Music at Gloucester Cathedral, and Patron of the Girl Choristers. It has never been more important to ensure that musical opportunities are offered to girls and boys of all backgrounds, and the work done at Gloucester Cathedral continues to produce a generation of youngsters who take a love of music forward into their lives.

A worthy cause. I love the music at the Cathedral which supports both

girls and boys learning.

MUSIC PATRON

Gloucester Cathedral Junior Choir: School years two to five.

The choir consists of around 40

members who represent at least

20 schools in the diocese. They

form an integral part of the

Cathedral’s worship on the 2nd

Sunday of every month as well

as performing in concerts.

Gloucester Cathedral Choristers: School years

three to eight. Our girl and boy

choristers sing in this wonderful

building almost every day and

benefit from scholarships at the

King’s School, providing them

with an exceptional education

and the perfect environment to

develop their musical talent.

Gloucester Cathedral Middle Choir: School years six to nine.

The choir is an intermediate

step between the Junior Choir

and Youth Choir, with the aim

of further developing the

musicianship of young people.

Gloucester Cathedral Youth Choir: School years

10 to 13. The choir is made

up of talented young singers

from schools and colleges all

around Gloucestershire. They

sing Evensong every Thursday

and participate at other major

services during the Church year,

including Christmas Midnight

Mass, Ordinations and Carol

Services as well as touring

internationally.

Gloucester Cathedral Choir: Consists of nearly 40 boy and

girl choristers, supported by our

lay clerks. They encapsulate the

Cathedral’s musical excellence

when singing at our regular

and special services. They are

renowned for concerts with

prestigious choirs and orchestras,

performances at the Three Choirs

Festival, TV, radio, professional

recordings and international tours.

Community Engagement: Music is for everyone, and

we are continually developing

opportunities for people of all

ages to enjoy singing through

our community engagement and

outreach work.
