IPCC 2007: Very Likely…

• 2001: was "likely" that human activities were one of the reasons behind the warming trend between 66% and 90% probability.

• 2007: at least 90% certain that human emissions of greenhouse gases rather than natural variations are warming the planet's surface.

• Temperature were probably going to increase by 1.8-4C (3.2-7.2F) by the end of 2100.

• IPCC was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007

Fossil Fuels are the main cause of global warming and climate change

Main greenhouse gas is carbon dioxide (CO2) produced by fossil fuels (coal, oil and gas) for energy and transport

Extreme weathers are more intense and severe

• The concentration of CO2 will induce 2°C global temperature rise as early as year 2035

• Once passed this 2°C threshold, it will trigger catastrophic consequences to ecosystem and mankind

political commitment- EU: only commit to 20% reduction target- Wealthy “developing” countries, such as Saudi

• But, announced to reduce carbon intensity by 2020, binding EE, RE targets

• Concrete carbon intensity reduction target to be in the next 5-yr plan (2011 – 2015)

emitter, biggest per capita emitter and energy consumer

• Reduction target: only 4% on 1990 emission

• Gives billions of dollars to fossil fuels industries

• Allow massive off-setting
