Dear Friends of GlobeMed at DU, It has been an honor to become involved with such an amazing organization. Since day one we have been welcomed with open arms to the GlobeMed family. This year has been a wonderful adventure. We’ve had ups and downs, obstacles and confusion, setbacks and surprises but overall achieved incredible growth and success. Our resilient staff and executive board with their great dedication and continual patience have raised over $3,500 for our partner and brought awareness to our campus community. We have laid the foundation for a strong relationship with our partner in eastern Cambodia, which will only grow and strengthen in the future. This unique relationship and involvement with GlobeMed has allowed us to make a tangible difference in a community across the world, an idea that previously seemed out of reach. This report is a summary of our work and what we have accomplished with the help of many. We hope readers will see the immense passion and happiness that surrounds GlobeMed at DU. As co-presidents our excitement was never ending as more people joined our team and we watched the organization develop and succeed before our eyes! GlobeMed, BSDA, and everyone involved have nestled deep into our hearts.We couldn’t be more excited to see what our chapter and the organization as a whole blossom into! 2011-2012 AT A GLANCE
October 29, 2011 Executive Board Retreat
This was our e-board's official introduction to GlobeMed and our partner Buddhism for Social Development Action. We got to know each other, created goals and expectations, and learned about the structure of the GlobeMed network.
December 2011 Individual Giving Campaign Our fist campaign! We sent letters to friends and family raising awareness for GlobeMed and our partner Buddhism for Social Development Action. We were blown away by the positive and supportive reactions!
February 4, 2012 Fall Staff Retreat Our first meeting as a full Staff! We met off campus to give our new staff members a full introduction to GlobeMed and our Denver chapter. This included a globalhealthU jeopardy, games snacks, and making Valentines!
April 16, 2012 Waffles for Wellness
Students pre-ordered waffles which were delivered to their dorm rooms during midterms.
March 1, 2012 GlobeMed at Illegal Pete’s Fundraiser at a local restaurant which donated 15% of proceeds to GlobeMed during that day.

In the spring of 2011 a DU student asked a visiting friend where her bracelet was from. The student from Loyola Chicago explained that it was from her GlobeMed partner community in Ecuador. She then described the whole GlobeMed organization. Her DU friend was very interested and went to the GlobeMed website that night to see how she could get involved. Unfortunately the deadline for new founder applications had passed just 3 hours before! She e-mailed headquarters and got an extension for the deadline. While filling out the application, she told her neighbor about GlobeMed and together, they founded GlobeMed at DU.
ABOUT US
OUR PARTNER Buddhism for Social Development Action (BSDA)
KEY FACT: Nearly half of all Cambodian children are malnourished, and one in eight dies before their fifth birthday, largely due to preventable causes.
ABOUT BSDA FOUNDED IN 2005
BSDA was founded in 2005 by seven Buddhist monks who were hurt that altruism was preached in the community but not widely practiced. The organization has a large range of programs from education and vocational training to democracy development, to working with drug users, poor or vulnerable children and families living with HIV/AIDS. GlobeMed at the University of Denver has been partnered with BSDA since 2011. Together, their efforts will benefit patients and families living with HIV/AIDS. The mission of BSDA is threaded through their various projects. Underlying goals include improving education, supporting orphans and the sick, improving social accountability, providing counseling and rehabilitation for drug addicts, increasing community development, and encouraging democracy and good governance. Still led by Buddhists, BSDA maintains religious neutrality and works toward improving communication between religious groups within Cambodia.

About 2.5 hours drive from Phnom Penh, Kampong Cham is the third largest city in Cambodia. Khmer Rouge forces established a Communist regime in 1975 and reigned until 1979. While in power, the Khmer Rouge introduced a series of socialist programs and killed close to 1.7 million people. The regime restricted freedom of speech and religious practice while controlling communication and access to food and information. During this time, the entire healthcare system was destroyed. Of the 45 doctors that survived, 20 left the country. Today, the most common diseases in Cambodia are related to issues with water and sanitation. Trained health care personnel are reluctant to leave Phnom Penh and venture to more isolated locations. The health system is based on curative medicine instead of prevention and there is little emphasis on primary health care.

KEY FACT: In 2009 it was estimated that 63,000 people in Cambodia were living with HIV/AIDS.
&OUR PROJECT GlobeMed at University of Denver
Why nutrition and income generation? It is important that people living with HIV/AIDS have enough food to eat and have some form of income generation to support their daily lives. Fishponds and home vegetable gardens will provide food for the families and will serve as a source of income. The ponds and gardens will also give the people ownership and self-confidence. They will learn to provide for themselves instead of relying on external aid.
GlobeMed at DU aims to raise $3,000 to fund vegetable gardens and fish ponds for families
living with HIV/AIDS in Kampong Cham, Cambodia."
Our chapter directly funded the establishment of 18 fish
ponds and 18 gardens for families living with HIV/AIDS. This included the supplies necessary to build the ponds and
gardens, in addition to training the families how to properly maintain them.
With the ponds and gardens, the families will be able to
provide food for themselves and their families in addition to selling their fish and vegetables at local markets. This will
bring food and income to the families in addition to teaching them to help themselves instead of relying on aid
from other sources.

As a first-year organization, it was important to establish the overall mission. Discussing the relationship between poverty and health was one way to build passion around what we are doing. One of our favorite activities involved drawing pictures of how we imagined poverty and health to be related. There were some great drawings, and we were able to scan all of the pictures onto one document to make a poster. After reading the real-life stories of people struggling to get treatment or employment, we had great discussions about defining good health as maintaining one's dignity along with feeling emotionally, physically, financially, and politically secure and stable. We found that the well-being of each individual is dependent on so many factors; it is not solely dependent on medicines. Access to resources, money, social support, shelter, nutrition, and many others affect one's health. Our discussions explored health as well as the causes of poverty, economics, and social justice, which appealed to our staff's varied interests. Overall, we were all able to learn more about the issues upon which GlobeMed centers, which inspires us to do everything we can in Denver. Not only are there connections among the issues we discussed, but people all around the world have connections with one another, and GlobeMed enables us to strengthen these bonds.

critical thinking skills that will inform a life of leadership for global health.

ORIENTATION Chapter members were

poverty and sought to explore the connections between

We considered the views of six developmental economists
to explored the root causes and paths out of poverty.
INDEPENDENT INVESTIGATION
Chapters conducted an in-depth investigation on a topic
of interest.
STUDENTS’ ROLE Following a critical discussion
of our role in perpetuating poverty, we sought to
understand how we can be effective advocates.
REFLECTION Chapters reflected on the year
behind them both as individuals and in the context
of their chapter.

TOTAL # OF CHAPTER MEMBERS: # OF COMMUNITY BUILDING EVENTS: Community building has been a key part of developing our chapter at the University of Denver. To create a strong sense of community we had two main retreats throughout the school year. The first one was an executive board retreat and the second was a staff and executive board retreat. These allowed us to get to know each other and create a sense of community within the team. We continued to grow closer throughout the year. We incorporated games and activities into our weekly meetings. We look forward to strengthening community within our chapter as we grow.

OUR FUTURE
With a very successful yet slightly tumultuous first year, we are all excited to see where the future takes our GlobeMed chapter. At the end of the year, we all got together to discuss what we wanted out of the year ahead of us. With many of our juniors going abroad, including our two co-presidents, we wanted to set direct goals as a whole group. Now that we know our way around university politics and what the student body enjoys, we want to strengthen our foundation. We want to increase community within our chapter, improve our relationship with our partner and encourage more involvement from campus. With a stronger sense of community and better relationship with our partner, we hope to become better recognized on campus and distinguished from other health organizations. Emphasizing our unique relationship with our partner will set us apart from other organizations and attract new participants both to our staff and campaigns. We will continue working with BSDA on building fish ponds and gardens for families living with HIV/AIDS. We will be reaching out to more families and will begin building chicken pens as well. Another goal for the coming year is to visit our partner through a GROW internship during the summer of 2013. This will allow us to see first hand the impact of our project, strengthen our project plan, and further improve our chapter partner relationship. We thank everyone who supported us this year and hope you continue to watch us grow in the future. With your help we started off strong and will only keep going up in the future!
