INDUSTRY NEWS
MSC Chitra Stabilization Work Continues
Rotterdam-based salvage experts Smit began work on Friday to salvage the stricken MSC Chitra from the
Mumbai navigation channel by pumping ballast water into the tanks of the heavily listing ship.
The box ship collided with a bulk carrier on August 7, losing nearly 300 containers from its deck and forcing
Mumbai Port and nearby Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) to close almost entirely and thus impacting an
estimated USD4 billion of trade.
Meanwhile, of the 293 containers known to have spilled into the channel only about 100 have been retrieved
with the balance thought to be as 'good as lost' according to the shipping ministry; but nevertheless the port
has now been fully reopened with normal trade resuming.
With both masters now on bail pending an official enquiry into the collision, the port authorities have sent a
compensation claim as the 'official polluter' to the Geneva liner, who from the beginning vehemently expressed
its vessel's innocence in the altercation.
