Globalization and development Trail of development

Economic development of a country is influenced by several factors. Life expectancy ratio(LE) and gross domestic product (GDP) will bring direct result of changes with the economy of a country and hence these two factors plays a significant role in the development analysis of a country. In this report. to identify the development of Vietnam over the past 100 years the GDP and LE values form the Gapminder World site is used. Life expectancy is defined as the statistical measure of the average expected life time of the people (Dean Koontz, 2005). Gross Domestic Product(GDP) value is the total dollar value of all goods over a specific time-period(Investopedia, 2016). In the following part of the report, Vietnam’s development in the time-period from 1915 to 2015 is explained. To identify the growth of Vietnam, factors such as Life expectancy, GDP and cell phones per 100 people were analyzed in this report

Fig 1.2: 1918 Vietnam Life Expectancy Analysis

As shown in the picture above, the life expectancy of the Vietnam in 1918 rapidly falls to 21.66 from 32. The main reason for this is the French colonialism in Vietnam. During that time, French authority sent several Vietnamese to participate in the world war 1. To serve as soldiers and labors, it is estimated that some 100,000 Vietnamese were sent to France to participate in the world war 1 (Justin Corfield, 2014).

Fig 1.3: 1939 Vietnam life expectancy analysis

From the year 1919 to 1939 Vietnam experienced a slow and steady growth in the life expectancy value. As per the Gapminder data in 1939 this value reached to 37.04. By this period

the world war-1 came to an end and economy of the several countries started growing in a steady rate.

Fig 1.4: 1945 Vietnam life expectancy analysis

From year 1939 to 1945 country again experienced a big fall in the life expectancy Value. As per Gapminder data the life expectancy value of Vietnam dramatically descends to 16.87 in 1945. There are two main reasons, participation of the Vietnamese in wars and famine. The great Vietnamese famine in the 1944-45 reached its peak in March and April 1945. As per Vietnamese official reports there were 1,000,000 to 2,000,000 million victims (Geoffrey Gunn, 2011). In Agriculture was the dominating sector of the of the nation’s economy. The period from 1934 to 1943 is considered as the golden age of the economy of the colony of Vietnam. During the period the industry took up to 10% of the total value of industrial and agricultural production. Rice was the main commodity that Vietnam used to export during those periods, though the rice was "exported" the population still suffered starvation and hunger during this period and towards the end of 1945 the economy of the Vietnam started experiencing a downward slope(Social repulic of Veitnam Government portal, 2016)

Over the next 25 years Vietnam achieved a steady growth in the life expectancy value. By the year 1970 Vietnam’s life expectancy value reached to 58.78. From the period, of 1954 to 1975 Vietnam had undertaken two important task, setting up the socialism in North Vietnam and war against US in south Vietnam (Social repulic of Veitnam Government portal, 2016). The upward trend in the GDP and LE is due the development of the agriculture and industrial sectors in Vietnam. As per the official data of the Vietnam’s government portal there were 150,000 manufacturing establishments employing 430,000 workers, taking up 63.7% of industrial production in 1957.

By the period of 1985 Vietnam’s gross domestic product, reached 14.09 billion U.S. dollars. Per data provided by the world bank for Vietnam during the 1985 to 2015. The average value GDP value during the period was 59.88 billion. Vietnam reached a minimum value 6.29 billion U.S. dollars in 1989 and maximum of 193.6 billion U.S. dollars in 2015 (The global economy , 2016). This abrupt drop is due to the major reforms that underwent to in the late 80’s to move away from the centrally planned economy to a much freer economy like other developing countries. Life expectancy value of Vietnam in 2015 is about 75.4 years.

Another factor that we covered in this report is the mobile phone uses per 100 people. From the very beginning globalization bought enormous effect in the Vietnamese people and their lifestyle. Now day’s mobile technology is very common in Vietnam. As per the data aspect recorded in 1992, almost no mobile phones were used in Vietnam.

Page 6: Globalization and development

As per the data, approximately 130 mobile phones per 100 people. Which reveals that some subscribers might have more than one cell phone. This indicates the significance of the mobile phones in Vietnamese day to day life style.

Conclusion: Data from the gapminder shows that Vietnam is developing in a fast rate and country made a lot of positive transformations. Despite the other challenges Vietnam has a promising future to become an economically develop country.
